Chances are all the films you love, all the books you devour, have pulled you in because you can relate not only to the character and their journey, but to the underlying messages that apply universally to all human beings.  There are recurring symbols and motifs weaved into the fabric of stories from ‘The Three Little Pigs' to ‘Harry Potter', that signal, repeat and reinforce the themes that writers from Shakespeare to Quentin Tarantino use to draw us in and deliver a moral takeaway. Today I talk to actor, producer, writer and director Andres Orozco who has taught Screen Arts and Communications at Pepperdine University for 20 years. Andres is also the co-founder and co-owner of the award-winning production company Novelas Educativas, which creates culturally-relevant digital content across all platforms. We talk about his approach to creating authentic content and culturally-resonant marketing campaigns and what the changing landscape of higher education means for students and for institutions. Andres believes messaging based on the prestige of higher education doesn't cut it in a world where young people are questioning the value of college relative to heavy student debt.  Instead, a message centered on self-determination is more effective. “I tell my students college is about giving you the power to say no and giving you the power to live your life the way you want to live it.  They understand that and they're like, ‘That's what I want.'” We also explore Latino subcultures and even swap a couple of casserole stories! She is an international award-winning filmmaker, and creator of LGBT focused web series. She is also a professor of writing. B. Danielle's novel, The Alyse Diaries, explores the life and death of a young woman struggling with her sexuality.    In this podcast, B. Danielle and I talk about how she drew inspiration from real life when writing her fiction books. B. Danielle tells us about: How she decided to set the book in the 1990s and early 2000s, and how she drew on the universal themes of self-discovery to relate to readers.  The different experience of writing a novel compared with writing a screenplay, and how writing a book involves more characterization and building out of a character, as opposed to screenplays in which the characters are more influenced by the actors portraying them.   How there is still vulnerability in writing fiction, because we still put something of ourselves into our work. You still are influenced by your life and your writing is still being critiqued, even if it isn't a memoir.

What do dreams mean?   Are they trying to tell us something about ourselves?   Can information from one's dream assist with psychic development or foretelling the future?    Jason Interviews Special Guest, Mimi Pettibone to discuss her prior life experience with Dream Interpretation, Dream Work and her Podcast, The Dream Detective.    Mimi has been curious about her dreams since an early age, and she has been working on interpreting one's dreams for the past thirty years.   Pettibone's background in dream work includes all sorts of interpretive methods including Dream Interviewing, Gestalt, Universal Themes, Parts Work, Shadow Work, and Dream Groups.   She enjoys combining the best of these modalities into her own method called, Dream Detective Work, by connecting with images, seeing how they relate to waking life, and making informed decisions and changes based on the insights they provide.   All dreams have meaning, and understanding one's dreams is like solving a puzzle and Dream Detective Work can assist with placing the pieces together to create a refined understanding of one's dreams.   Insight from one's dreams can help us to connect our talents and life purpose, and assist us with finding, creating and developming healthy relationships with others.  They can strengthen our connection to our intuition and inner guidance.

Chances are all the films you love, all the books you devour, have pulled you in because you can relate not only to the character and their journey, but to the underlying messages that apply universally to all human beings. There are recurring symbols and motifs weaved into the fabric of stories from ‘The Three Little Pigs' to ‘Harry Potter', that signal, repeat and reinforce the themes that writers from Shakespeare to Quentin Tarantino use to draw us in and deliver a moral takeaway.   Speakers and copy writers can also use universal themes and the tools of symbols and motifs in stories and more widely in their content to hook the audience, keep them engaged and get them to remember the kernel message and action points.
