Ancient Sculpture and Twentieth-Century American Womanhood: Venus Envy (Bloomsbury, 2025) by Dr. Hallie Franks examines the reception of Graeco-Roman sculptures of Venus and their role in the construction of the body aesthetics of the “fit” American woman in the decades around the turn of the 20th century. In this historical moment, 19th-century anthropometric methods, the anti-corset dress reform movement and early fitness culture were united in their goal of identifying and producing healthy, procreative female bodies. These discourses presented ancient statues of Venus – most frequently, the Venus de Milo – as the supreme visual model of a superior, fit, feminine physique. An America of such Venuses would herald the future prosperity of the “American race” by reviving the robust health and moral righteousness of the ancient Greeks. Venuses had long been symbols of beauty, but the new situation of Venus statues as an aesthetic and moral destination for women set up a slippage between ideal sculpture and living bodies: what did it mean for a woman to embody – or to try to embody – the perfect health and beauty of an ancient statue? How were women expected to translate this model into flesh? What were the political stakes to which this vision of a nation of American Venuses was bound? Who was believed to conform to this ideal, and who was excluded from it? In taking on these questions, Dr. Franks engages with physical culture and dress-reform media, modern artwork that adapts Graeco-Roman traditions, anthropological texts, art histories of ancient Greece, film, advertising and medical reporting on women's health. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. ‘The legacy of Leigh Bowery, king of queer', written by Dutch journalist Bamber Delver, looks at the the career of this outrageous shapeshifter of the 80's/90's. Decades after his death, Leigh Bowery's influence is omnipresent. From Alexander McQueen to Cirque du Soleil, from Lady Gaga to the drag queens of RuPaul. In this book 15 artists (inc. Le Pustra, Trevor Messersmith, Paola Idrontino, Luis Peralta, Saskia Kemperman, The Huxleys, Kat Joplin and Venus Envy) from around the globe admire his guts, his looks and fashion-philosophy which is nowadays called ‘queer': no boundaries, no gender, no age, no sexuality, no restrictions of the human-form. Ann Holt, with whom Leigh travelled to London at 17, shares her memories. Leigh's sister Brownyn tells about her childhood with Leigh. Also in the book is an interview from 1989 where Bamber interviewed the artist Leigh Bowery, as well as lots of never-seen-before photos of three of Leigh's creations. The book presents several timelines, of Leigh's life and afterlife: his legacy. Like the annual Aussie-party Bowerytopia and the theatre named after him: the Bowery Theatre, Australia (native country of Bowery). A variety of performers pay tribute to Leigh, verbally and visually. The book comes in different versions. The hardcover in print is a real treat. Leigh died in 1994, at just 33, but his creative legacy is bigger than ever. 'Do disabled people get to have pleasure? And, you know, there's also all these other rules that go along with how people get it on; how people have sex and feel pleasure together. And one of the biggest myths that come up is around this idea of like spontaneity, where like every time we have sex, there should be no conversation that happens...' reflects Rachele Manett, on early childhood perceptions around the way sex is 'supposed to be'.In this episode of Hey, Cis! we are talking about the intersections of ability and the accessibility of accessing pleasure; the privilege that accompanies ability when it comes to connecting sexually with others and ourselves.Isaac (He/They) and Cyn (She/Her) are pleased to welcome Rachele Manett (she/they) to the show. Rachele is a queer, Jewish, disabled sexuality educator. They are currently the education coordinator for Venus Envy; an education-based sex shop and book store located in Kjipuktuk (Halifax), Nova Scotia, where they organize and deliver workshops on all sorts of sexy topics.Rachele has a particular interest in accessible sex practices and pleasure experiences."I think that once sort of disability became a part of my life, my existence, I was like, Oh, I can throw this entire rule book that I thought existed out the window because it's clearly not working for me anymore. Like, I had to rethink a lot of stuff, but I also think that that has had a big effect on how I see queer sex existing.'Promoting healthy conversations around body parts and body types plays a big role body positivity and body autonomy. But what happens when body terminology doesn't work for you? Or there isn't representation out there that supports your identity? What kind of barriers form and why are they harmful?Listen up folks! This episode is a tip of the iceberg around conversations that should be happening around sex and pleasure and we're excited you're here!If you're a parent or a caregiver of a transgender or non-binary youth, teen or young adult, or you're an educator; this episode is all about inclusion, pleasure, accessibility and breaking down myths and stigma linked to cisnormative bias. We also talk about tools, toys and supports promoting body euphoria for trans youth. Because.... if we're not talking about it, you may never find out.Hey, Cis! is changing the narrative, one conversation at a time; and building better humans along the way. Ben and Courtney reunite on this packed episode and start with a discussion of the legacy of the late Jana Novotna, who passed away at age 49 due to cancer. How should her legendary breakdown and resilience continue to influence how we see the sport today? As the WTA and ATP seasons wrapped up, what did we learn about the respective year-end champs, Caroline Wozniacki and Grigor Dimitrov? Will either be able to carry their results into next year? And is 2018 primed to be a year full of first-time major champions on either or both tours? We then touch on the ATP Next Gen event in Milan, its tasteless draw ceremony, and the reactions to mid-match coaching with headsets. Our takes vary here. Then we introduce you all to the #NCRBookClub, which is starting with Venus Envy by John Wertheim, which you should read! Lastly, Courtney gives all sorts of movie recommendations and Ben talks about his game show experience and recent Jeopardy closure. Disabled femmes & disabled femmes of colour speak about everything from racism in the disabled community to love and sex, and the buzz-wordiness of "accessibility" in progressive spaces/organizations. Co-Host Rebecca Stuckey shares her personal story and experience with disability. Masuma Khan speaks about the stigma of being a young person with a cane and accessibility at work and the mosque. Author Kaleigh Trace shares a NEW piece of writing and speaks with us about how navigating consent is complicated when your body is medicalized. Kate speaks about her experience doing care work, as a traumatized femme with a disability and how important it is for her activism and feminism to centre folks with intellectual disabilities. ~*~*~*~*~ Music on today's episode: Jay Som - Lipstick Stains Mitski - First Love/Late Spring Vagabon - Mal à L'aise Night Owl - Broke For Free ~*~*~*~*~ Masuma Khan is a third-year Dalhousie student majoring in international development studies. She’s the outreach and campaigns coordinator at the Equity and Accessibility office for the Dal Student Union. Kaleigh Trace is a queer, disabled writer and sex educator. She’s the author of the brilliant book Hot, Wet & Shaking: How I Learned To Talk About Sex and the blog The Fucking Facts. She used to work at Venus Envy in Halifax, where she led workshops exploring disability, desirability, resistance, sex toys and more. Now she’s living in Toronto, where she continues to do incredible work. Kate is a queer, femme, disabled, and traumatized spinster-cat-mom. She has been caring, supporting and holding space for folks with intellectual disabilities for nearly 5 years. This has left her fiercely passionate and angry about accessibility and recognizing, honouring and holding femme magic and labour close.

Conformity is Normity

“Normalization” begins with an idealized norm of conduct – for example, the way a soldier should ideally stand, march, and present arms, with each of these actions defined in minute detail. Individuals are then rewarded for conforming to this ideal or punished for deviating from it. Normalization allows a leader to exert maximum social control with the minimum expenditure of force. This idea of “disciplinary power” emerged over the course of the 19th century, came to be used extensively in military barracks, schools, factories and offices in the 20th century, and has since became a crucial aspect of modern societies.  I blame the British. Curious to know more? Read Discipline and Punish by Michel Foucault “We all know bad things are happening to our political and social universe; we know that business is colonizing ever larger chunks of American culture; and we know that advertising tells lies. We are all sick to death of the consumer culture. We all want to resist conformity. We all want to be our own dog.” – Thomas Frank, Conglomerates and the Media, 1997 “The reward for conformity is that everyone likes you but yourself.” – Rita Mae Brown, Venus Envy, 1994 “Education either functions (1.) as an instrument which is used to facilitate integration of the younger generation into the logic of the present system and bring about conformity or (2.) it becomes the practice of freedom, the means by which men and women deal critically and creatively with reality and discover how to participate in the transformation of their world.” – Paulo Freire, Pedagogy of the Oppressed, 1968 Paolo Freire was a miraculous educator who used unapproved methods to teach thousands of illiterate Brazilian farmworkers to read and write in just 45 days. He was later put in jail. I believe Paolo would have loved Wizard Academy, a school for the imaginative, the courageous and the ambitious. We resist rigid rules and rely instead on universal principles. Laid side-by-side, a stick and a rope have a similar profile. Likewise, rules and principles look alike even though they have little in common. Rules are like sticks. You can prod people with them. You can threaten people with them. You can beat people with them. But you cannot lead people with them. When a rule doesn't fit the circumstance, your only choice is to break it. Principles are like rope, able to be wrapped around even the most weirdly shaped problems. They are less brittle than rules, and stronger. Principles whisper priceless advice and people are happily led by them. A rule requires obedience. A principle requires contemplation. Simple people living in a push-button society demand simple rules. Wise men and women understand and apply universal laws. There. I have said it. Roy H. Williams
