Erin and Esther are celebrating the fifth anniversary of this little ol' podcast! After some reflections on all we've lived through since October 2019 (!!), the Bagels move down the Jewish interpretive road, examining "Agatha All Along" — its bar mitzvah episode and other moments and images that remind us of Jewy things. Looking ahead to November, the Bagels discuss A Real Pain, the movie written and directed by and starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin. Erin bubbles with enthusiasm about the release of Wicked and talks about the film's long production road. So if you care to find us, look to the Western Sky, or join us on the Bagels' Road. If you're reading this, you're with us already. And we're so grateful for that! The journey of an artist is a winding one. You make the decision to start, not knowing where it will take you. Over time, if you're fortunate, you build a career from your work while gaining the freedom to explore new forms of expression, with each project becoming an important and affirming part of that journey. In this episode of The Unfinished Print, I speak with Mariko Jesse, a professional illustrator who has integrated mokuhanga into her artistic practice. Mariko draws inspiration from her life experiences, sharing insights on her family and travels. We discuss how living in San Francisco, Hong Kong, and Japan has shaped her outlook and creative process. Mariko also reflects on her involvement with MI Lab, now based in Echizen, Japan, as well travelling to the International Mokuhanga Conference in April 2024. Finally, we explore Mariko's collaborations with The Mokuhanga Sisters and wood+paper+box, and how these partnerships shape her own artistic practice. Mica powder is typically mixed with glue and applied to the surface of the print in areas where a subtle sparkle or luminous texture is desired, often to highlight details such as clothing, water, or the sky. This technique gives the print a luxurious quality and enhances the visual depth. Historically, mica was used in ukiyo-e prints to elevate the status of the work, and it continues to be used by contemporary printmakers for its unique aesthetic appeal. © Popular Wheat Productions opening and closing credit - sounds of the Sumida River 2024 logo designed and produced by Douglas Batchelor and André Zadorozny Disclaimer: Please do not reproduce or use anything from this podcast without shooting me an email and getting my express written or verbal consent. This episode features a story from Korea called "Beyond the Turtle Ocean, above the Western Sky". In it we discover a young sick girl and a shaman or spiritual healer or Mudang who helps the sick girl trace the source of her mysterious illness while discovering another young girl with an mystical incredible story. Mudangs perform various rituals, including dancing, chanting, and sometimes even channeling spirits, to heal the sick and bring blessings to individuals or communities. The dances they perform are often symbolic and rhythmic, believed to connect them with the spiritual realm and channel healing energy to those in need. These healing dances are deeply rooted in Korean culture and are still practiced in some communities today. This story is an excerpt from Wild Girls. Hello and welcome to the Baha'i Blogcast with me your host, Rainn Wilson. In this series of podcasts, I interview members of the Baha'i Faith and friends from all over the world about their hearts, and minds, and souls, their spiritual journeys, what they're interested in, and what makes them tick. In this special episode in honor of the 100th Anniversary of the passing of Abdu'l-Baha, I'm joined by Kathryn Hogenson, author, and attorney, who joins me in my home in California. She tells me how she became a Baha'i and about Ruhiyyih Khanum and her time at the Baha'i World Centre. She also talks about the first Western Baha'i pilgrims to Holy Land, and she shares unknown stories of Abdu'l-Baha and the Bahai's of that time. I'm sure you'll enjoy this conversation as much I did! “There isn't some kind of like hokey stage off to the side called like 'the local showcase' or something. They really do include us as a really valuable part of the festival, which means a lot and I think says a lot about our local music scene.” ~ Kalispell singer/songwriter Mike Murray Kalispell singer-songwriter Mike Murray is one of the many local artists that will be taking the stage at this weekend's Under the Big Sky music festival. Since last year's festival was canceled, this will only be the second year of Under the Big Sky but it is set to be quite literally the biggest event of the summer. Organizers are expecting roughly twenty thousand attendees for both Saturday and Friday nights, in addition to a smaller crowd on Friday. The festival is headlined by Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit and Tyler Childers, but organizer Johnny Shockey places a high priority on local acts, such as 20 Grand, Hannah King, and of course, Mike Murray. He joined me today to talk about his experience playing the festival in 2019, his recent records and what he's looking forward to this weekend.Later, host Micah Drew runs through the biggest stories from the last seven days, including the Glacier Institute's new Going-to-the-Sun Road Day Programs, construction updates along the Highway 93 bypass, and U.S. Senator Jon Tester's work negotiating a bipartisan infrastructure bill. HMM Cohosts Lovonia and Guy are joined in the studio by local band Ferriday for an interview and a live performance of their song "Two Trees" from their newly released album, Everywhere You Go. To check out more of their music, go to https://ferriday.bandcamp.com/. Ferriday started practicing and writing songs in the spring of 2013. The band is made up of two sets of brothers, who have been friends since high school. They all moved away from the area for a time, then found themselves back in the capital region and decided to play music together again. In early 2015, they released their first album Under the Western Sky, followed by All Roads in 2016. Ferriday's musical style is a mix of everything they they grew up listening to, from Neil Young to Minutemen to Weezer.
When is Nisan 14 in 2020 (Jewish Calendar Year 5780)? New Moon in the Western Sky begins the lunar month. The Jewish Calendar consists of 12 lunar months of 29.5 days each, bringing the “return of the year” in 354 days, falling short by 11 and one-quarter days of the solar year length. So the first problem in determining the date is to choose which new moon will mark the first month of the sacred year (as opposed to the start of the agricultural year which is 6 months latter). In the 4th century of our common era the rabbi Hillel II established an official Jewish Calendar that has been in use since then. A 13th lunar month is added 7 times in 19 years to make up the shortfall. The long years (13 months) occur at the end of years 3, 6, 8, 11, 14, 17 and 19 in the cycle, which is named for the Greek astronomer, Meton, who first devised it in the fifth century before our common era. This cycle pattern is similar to the black keys on the piano, representing the grouping of long years. Piano Key pattern of 13-month years in 19 year Metonic Cycle This means that by simply observing the calendar, we can determine which years correspond to this pattern of long years. Since the 20th century the first year on the Jewish calendar in the 19-year groups began in 1902, and again in 1921, 1940, 1959, 1978, 1997, and 2016. The first 13-month year of the current cycle occurred in 2019, corresponding with C# on the piano scales as year 3. Jehovah’s Witnesses have followed this same pattern since the first World War. However, their first year in the cycle occurs 14 years after the Jewish system, or 5 years earlier in the over-lapping scale of time. So in 2020, the Jewish calendar is at year 5 (12 months), while the Witnesses are at year 10 (also 12 months.) The mis-matches between the two parallel systems occur in years 1, 9 and 12 of the Jewish system, when those years are short, whereas the Witnesses are observing long years 6, 14, and 17 at the same corresponding time. Likewise, while the Jews are observing adar-adar, their 13th month in their years 3 and 14, Witnesses are starting Nisan a month earlier. This means that although Witnesses claim to follow the Jewish passover for Nisan 14, in 5 out of 19 years, there is a month difference in setting the date for Nisan 14. According to this for 2020 (5780) both systems have a short year, with Nisan starting with the new moon just after the spring equinox. That astronomical conjunction of the moon and the sun will occur at 11:29 am on March 24th (28th day of the Jewish month Adar) Jerusalem time, with the sun setting just before 6 pm. In order for a star or a dark face moon to be visible, the sun must be at least 8 degrees below the horizon, and the body observed must be 3 degrees above the horizon. Therefore, the new moon will not be visible in Jerusalem that evening, even with the best weather, and the next day will be the 29th of Adar. The moon moves to the left of the sun when the sun is high in the sky in its daily arc, or it appears to rise above it at sunset at the rate of one diameter per hour or 0.508 degrees of arc out of 360. Therefore to separate from the sun by the required 11 degrees, at least 22 hours of time must elapse after the time of conjunction or point of passing in the observed sky. Sunset the next evening in Jerusalem on March 25th will occur at 5:54 pm local time (GMT+2), when the sun will descend below the horizon. Thirty-two minutes later the sun will be 8 degrees below the horizon, but the lunar month’s astronomical age will be 30.5 hours old, placing the moon about 7 degrees above the horizon, allowing for a visual sighting. Therefore, Witnesses will start their month of Nisan at sunset on Wednesday March 25th. This means that Nisan 14 will begin at sunset on Tuesday, April 7th, which is the evening set for the Memorial observance at Kingdom Halls and places of meeting.

When she moved to Florida, Dellani Oakes had no idea the history was so rich and fascinating. Visiting St. Augustine for the first time, she felt the allure of the country's oldest city. She decided then to write a story based there. It wasn't until nearly 12 years later that 'Indian Summer' took its final form. Dellani is a happily married mother of 4, a substitute teacher, and a former English teacher. When she is not one of the above, she is an avid writer, spending every possible moment immersed in her other worlds. She has also written a series of futuristic romance novels, contemporary romances and short stories. In an interview with self-publishing site, Smashwords, Dellani, shared, "I've been telling stories since childhood. I started writing short stories in high school and plays in college. I first attempted novel writing in 1988, but I never finished it. Maybe one day. I took up writing as a serious vocation in 2002, when my youngest started kindergarten." Dellani added, "I had a nomadic childhood. My father was an English professor and we moved a lot. I lived in Tennessee, Ohio, Massachusetts, Texas, Nebraska and Mississippi before coming to Florida. It gave me a wonderful variety of settings and people to choose from in my writing. Under the Western Sky is set in Nebraska in 1976. 'The Ninja Tattoo' takes place in present-day Florida. 'Indian Summer' is set in Florida's past in 1739." http://youtu.be/wXFI-sGPBtE
