Chip Conley is the Founder and Executive Chairman of Modern Elder Academy (MEA), the world's first "midlife wisdom school" dedicated to career and life transitions. At 26, he founded Joie de Vivre Hospitality, transforming it into the second-largest boutique hotel brand in the US. In 2013, Chip joined Airbnb as Head of Global Hospitality and Strategy, mentoring its founders and shaping its culture. He is also a sought-after keynote speaker and prolific author, with several influential books to his name, including Wisdom@Work: The Making of a Modern Elder and his latest bestseller, Learning to Love Midlife: 12 Reasons Why Life Gets Better with Age. In this episode… Many people approaching midlife struggle with uncertainty, questioning their purpose, relevance, and ability to adapt to change. Society often reinforces the idea that aging means decline, leaving individuals feeling stuck in careers or personal lives that no longer fulfill them. So, how can individuals in their middle years shift from feeling irrelevant to flourishing? Chip Conley, a veteran hospitality entrepreneur, author, and speaker, challenges these outdated notions by reframing midlife as a period of reinvention and renewal. Drawing from his journey — from building a boutique hotel empire to mentoring young tech leaders at Airbnb — Chip emphasizes the power of curiosity, adaptability, and lifelong learning. He shares practical strategies, including shifting from a fixed to a growth mindset, embracing intergenerational collaboration, and taking intentional sabbaticals to reset and gain clarity on life's next chapter. Tune in to this episode of the Smart Business Revolution Podcast as John Corcoran interviews Chip Conley, Founder and Executive Chairman at Modern Elder Academy, about harnessing the potential of middle life. They discuss how Chip navigated his transition from hotelier to tech mentor, the challenges of leading while learning, and the impact of longevity on career planning. He also shares the philosophy behind MEA's curriculum and the importance of a midlife sabbatical.

This week Nicola and Di chat with the wise and inspiring Chip Conley. Chip is an entrepreneur, speaker and New York Times best-selling author. Chip spent the first part of his career in the hospitality industry - he founded Joie de Vivre Hospitality in 1987, which became the 2nd largest operator of boutique hotels in the US. After selling his company in 2010, Chip went on to become the global head of strategy for Airbnb, transforming it from a fast-growing start-up to the world's most valuable hospitality brand. His next step was to follow his new passion to reframe the concept of ageing, and help people navigate midlife with a renewed sense of purpose and possibility. He founded the world's first midlife wisdom school, Modern Elder Academy (MEA). He is also a loving father to his two sons.  In this conversation, we hear how Chip had a near death experience that made him question the way he was living his life, and he decided he wanted to do something new in the second half of his life. He became dedicated to helping people navigate midlife in a new way, shift their mindset to be pro-aging and realise their best years are ahead of them.  Chip shares some great advice for what people can do to find more meaning in midlife, the importance of being willing to learn new things, be a beginner again and how to focus on having a growth mindset. We also hear about the fun things that people get up to at his MEA schools in Baja and Santa Fe - we can't wait to get there.  Chip is so inspiring and fills people with so much hope that the best is yet to come. There are days when I feel fantastic about being 53 years old. Maybe I've gone for a run, delved into an article about AI and understood more than half of it, or shared laughs with friends reminiscent of my teenage years. Then there are those other days when I glance in the mirror and notice more wrinkles, or when my husband suggests going to see a band and I decline because I'd rather be in my pajamas by 8 pm. Truth be told!So when I discovered Chip Conley, today's guest on Cracking Open and author of the New York Times bestselling book Learning to Love Midlife: 12 Reasons Why Life Gets Better with Age, I knew he would offer a wealth of wisdom on this complex phase called midlife. In this episode, Chip and I delve deep into the topic. We discuss candidly how his loss of five close friends to suicide and his own near-death experience taught him that mortality serves as an organizing principle for life.Chip shares insights from his early years of ballroom dancing, where he learned that it's a powerful metaphor for life: in the first half the ego leads the dance, but in the second half the soul takes the lead while the ego follows. His primary intention is to shift people's perspective on aging, advocating for a pro-aging mindset rather than an anti-aging one. With this shift, he emphasizes the numerous benefits, including gaining an additional seven and a half years of life.Chip Conley is on a mission to redefine midlife. Having disrupted the hospitality industry twice, first with Joie de Vivre Hospitality and then as Airbnb's Head of Global Hospitality and Strategy, he co-founded MEA (Modern Elder Academy) in 2018. MEA, the world's first midlife wisdom school, aims to reframe aging and empower individuals to navigate midlife with purpose and possibility. Our conversation in this episode goes beyond simply discussing the science and stories around embracing midlife; we fully embody it. We share laughter and vulnerability, along with our personal experiences with aging, and as a result, we connected on a deeper level.Since our discussion, I have felt lighter, more alive, and younger in my mind, body, and spirit. Chip Conley is truly a gift to the world and reframing what midlife could be like for all of us.Love,Molly

If you or someone you know is suicidal, please reach out to The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (8255), or message the Crisis Text Line at 741741. Listen in as Chip shares his life journey of learning on many levels. In mid-life, Chip's world was rocked when he lost friends to suicide. He had his own suicidal thoughts. Realizing that the human changes we go through in mid-life are not supported by our culture, he began to consider what humans really need to navigate the twists and turns of life. Out of this, Modern Elder Academy was born. In his exploration of mid-life, elderhood, and growing wisdom, Chip has come to see that the ultimate spirituality is one that "actually helps you to show up with the most humanity in this lifetime." Our humanity can be deepened and ripened through life if we engage in an exploration of and conversation in an understanding of our own spiritual nature. As Chip wisely says, wisdom isn't taught, it's shared. **While the vast majority of our guests are Process graduates, we occasionally host experts in other modalities of healing that align with the work of the Process. Join Chip in conversation with Liza and Raz Ingrasci: Chip, together with Liza and Raz Ingrasci of the Hoffman Institute, will host another live event - a community conversation with MEA and the Hoffman Institute. In Wisdom@Work: The Making of a Modern Elder he shares his unexpected journey at midlife — from CEO to intern — learning about technology as Airbnb's Head of Global Hospitality and Strategy, while also mentoring CEO Brian Chesky. Chip is the founder of the Modern Elder Academy, where a new roadmap for midlife is offered at a beautiful oceanfront campus in Baja California Sur, Mexico. He serves on the board of Encore.org and the advisory board for the Stanford Center for Longevity. www.ChipConley.com Key Takeaways People underestimate how much life they have ahead of them when they retire. Purpose, wellness, and community are lost. Midlife is a period of “middle-essence” — an adult version of adolescence with hormonal and emotional changes as you transition from adulthood into “elderhood.” Ageism is rampant in America because of our cult of youth, beauty, and athleticism—equating a declining body with overall decline as a human. It is the only socially acceptable bias that still exists in mainstream society. Anti-aging creams are essentially “anti-women” creams because they send a message that women are not supposed to have wrinkles. Learning how to look your age and feel good about it is owning your originality. The quickest to mortality is to have everything done for you. Too much hospitality can be harmful.

This week’s conversation is with Chip Conley, a boutique hotel entrepreneur who helped Airbnb's founders turn their fast-growing tech start-up into a global hospitality brand. After selling Joie de Vivre Hospitality, the company he started as a rebel entrepreneur at age 26, Chip wasn't sure what was next.He could have retired at age 52 but the young founders of Airbnb came calling.Chip served as Airbnb’s Head of Global Hospitality & Strategy for four years — while also being CEO Brian Chesky’s mentor — and continues today as a Strategic Advisor to the company’s leadership.Chip wrote about that experience in Wisdom@Work: The Making of a Modern Elder where he shares his unexpected journey at midlife — from CEO to intern. While writing Wisdom@Work, Chip was inspired to build the world's first "midlife wisdom school," the Modern Elder Academy, with a 3-acre oceanfront campus in Baja California Sur, Mexico. So why does Chip care so much about this idea of a “modern elder?”It’s because there were a few key points in Chip’s life where something was eating at him… he knew he wasn’t on the right path but it could have been easy to stay the course.Chip made the difficult but necessary decision in those moments to make a change and that’s at the heart of this conversation. This is about authenticity, it’s about being in touch with your core principles, and ultimately, it’s about wisdom.Chip’s seen it from every angle – entrepreneur, founder, mentor, and continues to make an impact on the next generation.------Please support our partners! We're able to keep growing and creating content for YOU because of their support. Yet, 40% of Americans today have a boss that is younger than them and by the year 2025, the majority of Americans will have a boss younger than them.” - Chip Conley He further added that we live in an era of digital intelligence. There is an impression that younger people are digital natives. They have more fluency and ability to learn in the digital world, hence tech companies usually hire them for senior roles. I fundamentally believe that if everyone in this world meditated in their own way or gave meditating a shot it would transform their lives. For my entire life whenever I heard the word “meditation” I immediately dismissed it.A picture of a hippie chanting “OOOOOM” popped into my mind every single time.I eventually began to shift my view after I learned Oprah Winfrey, Ray Dalio, meditated and praised it highly for their success. I thought meditation was something you did to relax like taking a pill or going for a walk.I was far from the truth. I began my meditation journey on a bus October 29th, 2016. I downloaded the Headspace app…put on my headphones..closed my eyes and followed the instructions.I opened my eyes 10 minutes later…and everything was different. I didn’t know how to describe it or but things were just different...I don’t have any science to describe this but anecdotally speaking…I believe my attention muscle was refocused and shifted. For the first time in my life, it felt like I was seeing things through a different lens. I was able to focus in on conversations and my surroundings a bit more instead of being stuck in my head all day.I consider October 29th, 2016 the first day of my consciously aware life. I continued my 10-15 minute meditation practice every single day from then on out. I missed a day here and there because I am still human. Here’s where things get interesting. Within only one week…the foundation of my entire internal world started shifting. I couldn’t articulate this at the time but I actually became MORE pissed and angry. It felt like the life I had created for 18 years was melting away.It felt like I was on the run from something. Luckily, at the time I didn’t understand the concept of self-development..because it felt like I was getting worse, not better. After another week I had a spiritual transformational experience in my life. It was a moment where I surrendered to myself…and understood that reality is a reflection of the exact decisions, choices, and effort I had ever made. What I learned was…Your Life = Subject (you) x Environment Which means if you close your eyes and focus on your breath, in the present moment you are essentially creating your own environment and allowing a deep submersion of who you really are. My meditation practice has been the foundation of my existence. Every morning I meditate for 20-30 minutes and 5-10 minutes at night. I view mindfulness meditation as an exponential meta-skill that improves every single thing you do. Meditation isn't something you necessarily do to become unstressed. You meditate to find out why you're stressed. I was honored to be the keynote speaker at five different conferences this month, all over the country -- from San Francisco and Los Angeles to Denver and Philadelphia, and I just got back from New York. And, what I noticed at all of these events and previous ones during the past few years, is that I've seen a lot more Millennials attending real estate events. It's been incredible to see how quickly some of these young people can build a business. For some, it seems like their energy and tech savvy creates companies overnight. And while these brilliant people know technology better than perhaps other generations, what they don't have necessarily is life experience. What would happen if you could merge wisdom with fresh ideas? Our guest today is Chip Conley, the founder of Joie de Vivre Hospitality which he began in 1987 at age 26. In 2010, after having created and managed 50 boutique hotels that are mostly in California, he sold his company. A few years later, he was asked by the three co-founders of Airbnb if he could help evolve the company into a hospitality company with more than one million hosts in 191 countries. Chip Conley doesn’t believe that modern business success is best kept for the young. In fact, this New York Times bestselling author, Airbnb Strategic Advisor and boutique hotel entrepreneur learned that with experience comes wisdom, which doesn’t mean you have all the answers . . . in fact, it means you have more questions than answers.    Inspired by what he learned while serving as Airbnb’s Head of Global Hospitality and Strategy in his mid-50s, Chip wrote his “manifesto on ageism,” Wisdom@Work: The Making of a Modern Elder. To combat the stigma against older workers in an increasingly Millennial world, Chip proves that generational diversity is the key to creating strong organizations.   But this episode is packed full with more than just age-related insights. They review the many ways organizations can capitalize on the loyalty as well as the wisdom of the mature employee. They talk about how intergenerational mutual learning is beneficial for both the individuals involved and for the company. Chip enumerates the ways a modern elder can add value not merely by dint of loyalty to the company and the capacity to mentor younger people, but also because they’ve accrued considerable experience, emotional intelligence, and wisdom -- not so much factual information as hard-won knowledge about how to make the process of working together work. Part manifesto and part playbook, Wisdom@Work ignites an urgent conversation about ageism in the workplace, calling on us to treat age as we would other types of diversity. In the process, Conley liberates the term "elder" from the stigma of "elderly," and inspires us to embrace wisdom as a path to growing whole, not old. Many “elders” have been forced to make a mid-career change, are choosing to work past retirement age, or are struggling to keep up with the millennials rising up the ranks. Chip Conley is a NY Times bestselling author, founder of Joie de Vivre Hospitality, and the Strategic Advisor for Hospitality and Leadership at Airbnb. His newest book, "Wisdom@Work: The Making of a Modern Elder," was inspired by his post-50-year-old experiences as both a mentor and unexpected intern at Airbnb. At age 26, he bought an inner city hotel, renamed it The Phoenix and it is now a popular place to stay for musicians, celebrities, etc. in the Bay area. After that he became the founder of Joie de Vivre Hospitality (JDV) which has become the 2nd largest boutique hotel brand in America, with 3500 employees. Chip sold JDV in 2010. He accepted an invitation in 2013 from the founders of Airbnb to help transform their start-up into what is today the world’s largest hospitality brand. In January 2018, he founded Modern Elder Academy (MEA), the world's first "midlife wisdom school," where attendees learn how to repurpose a lifetime of experience for the modern workplace.   Chip has made observations of 5 criteria that a modern elder may display. They are: Stewardship Emotional intelligence Holistic thinking Unvarnished insight Good judgment How does one start to become a modern elder? Evolving - if you are attached to your current identity you may need to evolve it, fix your ego, perhaps. Have a growth mindset, be curious, and try to improve yourself.  Chip says, “Curiosity is the elixir for life” Learning – don’t be afraid to ask questions and be ‘catalytically curious’ Collaborate – with age you develop pattern recognition. Wisdom is seeing patterns. Being intuitive about people makes you a great team member, helping people to see that diverse teams are more successful – this includes diverse in ages Chip’s advice for younger workers is to look around them to find people they see as a role model. Look at the people who you most admire and ask them out for coffee. His advice for older workers is to take a hard look at your current position. Is the habitat suitable for someone like you? If you feel you are irrelevant then move. If it feels good, look at how you can share your wisdom. He also tells older workers to intern publically and be curious. When you have advice, ask if the person would like some advice and come from a place of humility. It is important that the person you are trying to mentor has a growth mindset. Chip suggests that organizations start by reading the book, as the book has 10 specific steps for companies. Organizations should look at how they can adapt their aging workforce and they should look at best practices from other organizations in order to create multigenerational groups. What you will learn in this episode: 4 steps to being relevant in mid-life How organizations can be stronger by embracing a diverse range of ages How to find a mentor Why it is good to be ‘catalytically curious’ Why midlife is now 35 – 75 years old A look at a typical day in the life of Chip How to get rid of your ego Link From The Show: Chipconley.com

In this premiere episode, co-hosts Freeman Michaels and Barnet Bain will be joined by Chip Conley to talk about a better business model based on intrinsic values related to service and vocation—a new pyramid of priorities where employee fulfillment and satisfaction are of utmost concern to the company. As founder and CEO of Joie de Vivre Hospitality, a boutique hotel and restaurant company expected to gross more than $300 million in revenue this year, Chip has employed a revolutionary management model that turns traditional business practices upside-down.   Chip will discuss how “bottom line” thinking coupled with “command and control” management practices perpetuate a vicious cycle of dissatisfaction at every level of an organization. Hosts Freeman and Barnet will chime in with thoughts about top-down hierarchy and unhealthy competition, and what affects they have, not only in the workplace, but also in other areas of our lives.
