Guest: Nikki Henderson, a world-class professional sailor. In 2018, Nikki became the youngest skipper to lead a team in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. At the age of 25, over the course of more than 40,000 miles of ocean racing, Nikki led a diverse team of mostly amateur sailors from 16 countries to an extraordinary second place finish. She's also skippered numerous transatlantic races and won the Race to Alaska. In a Nutshell: How do you define your job as a leader? Nikki Henderson says that what she does as a skipper is pull together disparate individuals, build them into high-performing amateur teams, and then compete in the most extreme sailing races in the world. I experienced Nikki's leadership first hand a few weeks ago when I sailed with her in the Caribbean 600 as part of her amateur crew. This was a grueling 600-mile race around 11 Caribbean islands. Despite long odds, we ended up finishing third and celebrated on stage with our prize: a big bottle of rum. On today's show, Nikki Henderson and I discuss making life transitions, paradoxes and polarities in leadership, and decision-making under pressure and uncertainty.

In this episode I'm joined by Colin Tomlinson.Colin owns a learning and development company specialising in teaching Project Leadership and Management in the Civil Engineering and Construction industry. He uses techniques adapted from his 24 years career as an Officer in the Royal Engineers and his 12 years of experience within the industry to help navigate through the complexities of working on projects. He has recently completed two legs of The Clipper Race sailing almost 15,000 miles from Australia to Seattle via Vietnam and China. When he and I talked about his recent sailing adventure I found myself fascinated by why he'd decided to do it, how he went about it, what was the impact on his business and family, what was the experience really like and what did he take from it that has remained with him now he's back at home and back in his business.Colin kindly agreed to join me to create this episode and answer all my questions. In doing so he shares how instead of pausing his business to go sailing, the trip has been a catalyst to help him scale it. Perhaps less surprising were the numerous leadership lessons that emerge from the concentrated team environment of an ocean racing yacht.I'm excited to invite you to join Colin and me as he takes us behind the scenes of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, the only event of its type in the world where anyone, even if they've never stepped on a boat before, can join the adventure.Contact Colin:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/colintomlinson/Clipper Round the World About AndyI'm an experienced business leader and a passionate developer of people in the automotive finance industry, internationally.During over twenty years, I have played a key role in developing businesses including Alphabet UK, BMW Corporate Finance UK, BMW Financial Services Singapore, BMW Financial Services New Zealand and Tesla Financial Services UK. Tracy Edwards was the first woman to skipper an all-female crew in the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race in 1989. The Brit was up against none-other than one of our very own in that race – Sir Peter Blake and the New Zealand crew. But it wasn't all smooth sailing for Tracy to get there, she was expelled from school and found herself in the sailing world by sheer luck and determination. Tracy happens to be coming to Auckland later this year as part of The Ocean Race – to mark the 50th anniversary of the original Whitbread event. This episode I discuss my ideas for a new race- The Nova Round the World Yacht Race. With the Classic Challenge division of the Ocean Globe Race now cancelled despite my best attempts to keep it alive, the opportunity suddenly exists to create a North American RTW sailing event to give the Ocean Globe Race Classic Division boats somewhere to race in 2023/24. I have given this a lot of consideration but I would really like some input from you on this idea, so if you have an opinion to share please do so at the email address below. Just before you go.... She began working on charter yachts in Greece at the age of 17 and learned how to sail. Tracy took part in her first Whitbread Round the World Race as cook aboard ‘Atlantic Privateer' in 1985/86 becoming the first woman to race around the world on a Maxi.Upon completion she decided to enter the first all-female crew in the 1989/90 Whitbread and ‘Maiden' crossed the start line on 2nd Sept 1989 and sailed into the history books. ‘Maiden' went on to win two of the legs and came second in class overall. The best result for a British boat since 1977 and the best result for an all-female crew ever. Tracy was awarded the MBE and became the first woman in its 34 year history to be awarded the Yachtsman of the Year Trophy. In 1998 Tracy put together the first all-female crew to race a Multihull, this time in an attempt to be the first all-female crew to sail around the world non-stop and win the Jules V erne Trophy for the fastest non-stop circumnavigation of the world by sail. Sponsored by Royal & SunAlliance, the women had broken five world records and were well on the way to beating the Jules Verne, when their 92ft catamaran was dismasted 2000 miles off the coast of Chile. In 2002, Edwards created the first ever truly mixed gender team and broke four major world records in Maiden II.In October 2003 she signed a sponsorship deal with the Gulf State of Qatar as part of a four year sailing programme. The worlds' four largest and fastest multihulls raced against each other for the first time in sailing history. The event ended with non-payment by Qatar. In 2007 and 2008 Tracy worked for CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection) as Project Manager for their International Youth Advisory Conference. Working with the UN she assisted in the creation of the 2009 Resolution to the UNCRC. On January 1, 2020, walking therapist Carmen Rendell will leave her childhood home in Weston-super-Mare, and head south to follow the coastal path around the entire British Isles. Her goal is to raise awareness of the huge mental health benefits of walking in nature. Local communities and individuals across the nation will have the chance to join her along the way. Throughout her journey, Carmen will be hosting regular ‘Soulwalks’ – simple, short, group walks in nature for anyone to join. Her message is simple: families, individuals, schools, businesses can come together to walk for three kilometres. For no other reason than to be in nature and talk to each other. People can also pledge to support an individual ‘Sole2Soul Walk’ with Carmen – where they, someone they nominate, or a stranger, can join her to walk and talk. As a trained integrative therapist, with experience as a private practitioner, Carmen will use this time to give individuals the opportunity for therapy, whilst walking in nature. A Loughborough University Alumni, national league hockey player, sailor on the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race and Camino de Santiago walker, Carmen is familiar with the benefits of exercise, sport and walking for mind, body and spirit balance. Commenting on her ambitious goal, Carmen says: “Walking therapy benefits us in many ways. Science has proven that walking in nature can improve our mental wellbeing, by quietening our nervous system, reducing inflammation, repairing our brain and lowering our blood pressure.” Reinforcing these benefits, neuroscientist Shane O’Mara says: “The experience of walking can allow you to escape yourself and this non-ego focus is healthy. We should spend more time not thinking of ourselves.” Carmen’s route will primarily follow the coastal path, and she will let people know the calendar of events on the Soulhub website – www.soulhub.co.uk. Soulwalks can be organised in towns, villages or cities along the route and people can contact Carmen to organise one on her behalf that she can join. Carmen will be interviewing people along the way for her ‘SoulCast’ podcast. From local fisherman to business owners, teachers and artists, her goal will be to understand the true state of the nation and establish how people feel in the current social, economic and political environment. Carmen will also be hosting ‘SoulTalks’ in schools and communities and is keen to hear from anyone who would like her to come and talk about mental health and walking in nature. Manage Your Dreams from Anywhere In The World - featuring Bronwen Vearncombe Today on The Property Nomads podcast, we are delighted to be joined by property investor, traveller, and public speaker; Bronwen Vearncombe. Bronwen and her partner John have been investing in property for over five years, starting off with HMO's, and developing their portfolio since then to incorporate bigger and higher-yielding projects including B&B's, Guest Houses and Developments. In this episode we dive into Bronwen's journey to success, the Clipper Yacht Race, how to manage your portfolio from abroad and how having a powerful team around you can really enhance your business. Sign Up For MSOPI Here: https://bit.ly/msopi-nomad KEY TAKEAWAYS Part of Bronwen and her partner John's clear aims from the beginning was to ensure their business was able to function and flourish so that they could pursue their dreams, most notably to travel and to write a book. With family responsibilities to take care of, but with dreams unfulfilled in her career, Bronwen knew that if she wanted to achieve her goals and the lifestyle she wanted, she would have to ensure that she could replace her income, but also change her mindset. After realising that she would not be able to retire until the age of 67 if she stayed in her banking job, Bronwen decided to take drastic action to achieve her dream lifestyle. Bronwen decided upon HMOs as the way to launch her property investment portfolio, as they have the highest cash flow. This was done after carefully examining their outgoings and being clear on how much income they needed, as well as focusing with determination upon their goals. The key for Bronwen's business plans was always to have someone else manage their portfolio so that they could achieve their goal of spending more time with family and with each other. This emphasises the need to surround yourself with a reliable team upon whom you can leverage the keystones of your professional life. Networking has allowed Bronwen to refine her power team. There were initial challenges in running a business as husband and wife, but after taking time to really understand each other's strengths, Bronwen and John have formed a symbiotic business partnership that plays to each other's virtues. Technology and software allow the business to work no matter where in the world they are. This is a huge benefit as it means that Bronwen can pursue her travel ambitions while remaining in touch with her power team and overseeing the business from anywhere in the world. Bronwen and John both decided that the Clipper Yacht Race was an ambition they wished to achieve and were able to do so successfully by the use of careful planning, both in the business and mentally. In the first year of business, Bronwen learned that the key to lasting success is to surround yourself with positive, successful people, and to disregard the naysayers. Everyone is different, and success can be achieved even where others have failed. Educate yourself and surround yourself with positivity. After facing an incredibly challenging ordeal with a local planning committee, Bronwen and John decided to use a “pincer” strategy - namely that by identifying the many problems with their application, they were instantly able to identify all the things that were okay with it. If something was not rejected, then it must have been approved. One of the best ways of learning when it comes to property is just to do it. One of the main lessons Bronwen teaches now is that the journey can't begin unless you take the first step. BEST MOMENTS ‘When you work it all out, you'll be really surprised by how much you can actually manage' ‘You can't master what you don't manage' ‘Always use the expert' ‘We will find a way to make it work' ‘Just do it, because that's the best way of learning' ‘Go find successful people who make it work' VALUABLE RESOURCES The Property Nomads Website The Property Nomads Podcast – iTunes The Property Nomads - Stitcher Buy To Let: How To Get Started – By Rob Smallbone (Amazon) Propert Investing Foundation Bronwen's Facebook Page - https://www.facebook.com/propinvfoundation Email Bronwen at bronwen@propertyinvestingfoundation.com Rich Dad, Poor Dad - Amazon ABOUT THE HOSTS Rob Smallbone, Rachael Taylor and Matt McSherry, the hosts of The Property Nomads Podcast, are on a global mission to guide your success. In need of a break from her career as a dentist and needing to go on an adventure, Memnia signed up to take part in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. Memnia only had limited sailing knowledge prior to the race and had never been out at sea for more than a few hours. For that reason she had originally only signed up for the first leg of the race, crossing the Atlantic, travelling from London to Rio de Janeiro (28 day at sea). During the crossing, she fell in love with the sport and the sea, so she carried on signing up for more legs. She continued sailing through some of the most treacherous weather systems and isolated areas of the planet, facing not only the extremes of weather, from boiling to freezing temperatures, but also life threatening situations. She sailed to Cape Town, Albany, Sydney, Hobart, till she reached her final destination, Airlie Beach, Australia - 5 months later. She has covered more than 18,000 Nautical Miles in total, becoming the first and only Cypriot to have sailed from the UK to Australia on a racing sailing boat. Today, Memnia splits her time between England and Cyprus, combining dentistry with her love of adventurous activities, including sailing, scuba diving, trekking etc. She has been invited on various stages to share her story, including TEDxNicosia and has evolved as a motivational speaker and workshop trainer, inspiring others through her unique experience to go after their dreams and to reconsider their own lives. She has just completed an all-female expedition (Led by Felicity Aston) trekking on iced river in the remote Zanskar Valley, in Jammu and Kashmir. Show notes Memnia introduces herself Growing up in Cyprus Deciding to sail around the world The unfortunate events that happened in her life which led to making this decision Having no regrets Thinking about doing the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race when she was 31 Deciding to take the first step and send in her application How she funded the race Forget about her house deposit! What is the correct way to address sexism in sport and life? And is it much less commonplace than it was in say 1989? That was the year Tracy Edwards skippered the first all-female crew in the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race, becoming the first woman to receive the Yachtsman of the Year Trophy and was awarded an MBE honour. She didn’t set off as a feminist, but she certainly came back one. She sits down in the episode with Simon Mundie to discuss her experience of sexism in sailing round the world, how it changed her, and how commonplace it is in life now. Tracy’s boat was called Maiden, also the name of a documentary film charting Tracy’s journey. As well as sexism, Simon and Tracy discuss following your dreams, the negative and positive power of anger and self acceptance.
Listen In To Learn How advances in technology have made sailing safer The role that technology plays for all of today's sailors The extreme environments of a round the world race How tech has allowed spectators to keep up to date with the race whilst remaining on solid ground Tech That's Tough Enough To Withstand Mother Nature's Wildest Conditions In a 40,000 nautical mile race around the world in 70-foot racing yachts where nearly half the crew have little to no sailing experience, the Clipper Round The World Race is not for the faint hearted. Experiencing extreme heat, condensation, corrosive salt water and numbing cold, it's only the toughest of tech that will survive and see each team through to the finish. In this fascinating episode, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, Founder and Chairman of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, paints a vivid picture of life at sea. He takes us below deck to explain the training and preparation required to sail a yacht around the world, the tech that keeps spectators up to date with race conditions and the scariest experience of his life on the water.
Episode three is one very close to my heart. Back in 2007-8, I became the first female to successfully circumnavigate as skipper of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race so it was my absolute pleasure to chat with professional sailor and skipper of the first placed team in the 2017-18 Clipper Race - Wendy Tuck. Not only did she WIN the race but in doing so became the FIRST female skipper in history to win an around the world yacht race, a decade after my own circumnavigation. This truly inspiring lady talks about her experinces of leading a team of amatuer sailors around the world, dealing with the man management aspect of the race and describes in details her greatest "oh s&%t" moment which only goes to demonstrate the tenacity, determination and spirit of this truly inspiring female. Wendy is an incredibly humble person who admits that she did not even realise initially that her first place in the Clipper Race put her in the sailing history books. For anyone who wants to learn about how to keep calm in a crisis and motivate a team to keep pushing no matter how tough it gets this episode is for you. So tune in, feel free to share and I hope you enjoy the amazing stories Wendy has to tell. As ever thank you for listening and if you have a story you would like to share please get in touch info@achievingawesome.co. If you have a moment to give the show a rating on I Tunes I would much appreciate your support. PS. We conducted this interview thousands of miles apart via Skype so occaisionally the sound quality is not perfect so bear with us on that one :)
In episode two meet Hannah Mckeand - Polar explorer, adventurer, ocean sailor, entrepreneur and just all out inspirational human. After life presented her with an opportunity to leave her day job and travel, Hannah took a deep breath and began her incredible adventures. She ventured to the Western Desert, an area of the Sahara west of the Nile on a mission to find painted caves. It was during this trip that Hannah found the closest thing to a spitiual connection (without getting religious) in the vast expanse of wilidneress and decided that she simply had to visit the world's greatest wilderness - Antarctica. During her first group expedition to the frozen continent, Hannah found that her physique allowed her to excel at endurance sports and she quickly went from beginner to a valuable asset to the team. After joining the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race as a crew member and spending several months out on the ocean, she invested in a high latitude sailing vessel and spend years living aboard in some extremely harsh conditions before deciding that her true passion was pulling a sled across icy terrain. She has been awarded two Guiness World Records for fastest solo unassisted expedition to the South Pole and the greatest number of trips to the South Pole of any human on the planet. Hannah was also faced with a serious rescue mission while on a solo trek to the North Pole. This unstoppable awesome female is now a Polar Consultant, running her own comapny Polar Expedition Training - training and preparing aspiring adventures for trips to the world's most extreme places. Humble, honest and truly passionate about what she does, Hannah epitomises what it means to make the most of life and shares some valuable insights into getting through the tough times when it would be so easy to quit. If you ever needed that extra push to start doing what you love to do no matter how scary it may seem - this podcast is for you!! Thanks for listening and please as ever feel free to share.

Alex Hare is a force. Being around her you just pick up her vibe of "unforgiving optimism" it's contagious. Alex has done some pretty awesome things professionally as a young female in the oil and gas industry, the construction industry, and the engineering industry. This hasn't always been easy often being the minority in the room, the only scientist, the only young person, and the only female. She has also experienced the emotional ups and downs that we do in our 20's and has learnt a lot about herself from them. Alex has had a desire for physical adventure bubbling away below the surface for a little while now. Last year it manifested with Alex almost off-handed applying to sail in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. Lo and behold she got accepted and is now about to embark on what is going to be a daunting but epic voyage. This is our chat before she heads off. Points covered + Exploring the topic of resilience + Finding a physical challenge + The importance of having challenging conversations + Why being a good human involves helping society + Being a minority in the workplace + The importance of self-awareness and awareness around others + The struggles you face as you define who you are and what kind of leader you are + Sailing puns + Learning to apologise quickly + The importance of talking about our dreams + The importance of making regular mistakes + Investing in herself + And why you should always make your bed Guest: Alex Hare Alex Hare Alex Sails the Atlantic Instagram Clipper Round the World Race Host: Chris Desmond UIOK Facebook UIOK Instagram Twitter Music: Jeremy Desmond Music

WhiskyCast hits the road again, this time to the luxurious New York Yacht Club. Glasgow is sponsoring one of the ships sailing in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, which reached New York City on Friday, and the Glasgow City Marketing Bureau sponsored a reception to celebate. Glengoyne Distillery's table was the highlight, with a whisky blending competition for guests to try their hand at nosing and blending their own whisky. We'll follow one amateur blender through his turn at the table, and it's a perfect time for us to look at a "conventional wisdom" of the whisky world -- that there are 32 primary aromas the human nose can detect. As Kevin Erskine and Charles MacLean tell us, science has rendered that theory obsolete. In the news, Glasgow's controversial proposal to ban glasses from the city's pubs has been shattered...and we'll have the details on Episode 47 of WhiskyCast!
