Interview with Chris Windley, Chairman and CEO of the Cyber Security Association. Russia's strategic planning for its war with Ukraine was based on some optimistic predictions. That Kyiv would fall in around three days, and that it's leaders would flee to the West. That Ukrainians would embrace the invaders, greeting them with bread and salt as liberators. And ultimately, Putin believed that his system of government could be imposed upon Ukraine, a criminal kleptocracy based on a power vertical, rigged elections and courts, elimination of civil society, massive corruption, and enforced by riot police, informers, and secret police coercion. To an extent western military planners and media also anticipated a swift Ukrainian capitulation. But this did not happen. Tech and communications have been crucial so far in giving the Ukrainians an advantage despite their numerical inferiority in men and equipment – compared to the Russians. Today I'm speaking with Chris Windley about the unfolding conflict, Ukrainian's emergence as a tech power and innovator, and of course the hot topic of logistics and grain transportation. Chris Windley is a Cyber Security expert and Chairman and CEO of the Cyber Security Association. He is an educator and evangelist for Cyber Security and is well connected within the industry across the UK and globally. He is also an active supporter of UK & US Veterans. Over a long and highly entrepreneurial career, Chris has heled build and exit many tech companies. He is an innovator, author, leader, and mentor, as well as being a highly successful Yachtsman. Chris pioneered the development of fibre optic networks in the UK. He trained in the Royal Naval Engineering College, gaining a BSc in Computer Science, Communications, Electronics; and as a Naval officer of many years, he can be described as something of a Cold War Warrior.

Disneyland Adventureland Treehouse will Return with a New Look in 2023There are more details about the future of the treehouse in Adventureland at Disneyland park. When it reopens in 2023 the Adventureland Treehouse will be themed after Walt Disney's Swiss Family Robinson tree house--just as it is in Walt Disney World. This is likely because Disney is working on a remake of the 1960 movie as a new Swiss Family series on Disney+.The renewed treehouse will have new environments created among the branches of the giant tree on the shores of the Jungle River. From the mother's music den to the young sons' nature room to the teenage daughter's astronomer's loft, everything is created from found objects, natural resources, and pure ingenuity (just like the Disney fairies do). Tracy Edwards MBE skippered the first all-female crew to sail around the world when she and her team raced Maiden in the 1989/90 Whitbread Round the World Race. Despite overwhelming odds and negativity, they won two legs and came second overall. Tracy was awarded and MBE and became the first women to win the Yachtsman of the Year Award in its 34 year history. She then went on to skipper the first all-female non stop around the world record attempt and managed Maiden II the first ever fully mixed-sex professional racing team. Tracy founded The Maiden Factor in the process of rescuing of her beloved yacht Maiden. In 2016 she decided she wanted to do more than just restore Maiden, she also wanted to make sure she was used for something special. For Tracy, the drive to get girls who are currently denied the basic right of an education into school, is particularly poignant as she was expelled from school at 15. Alan's next sailing adventure was to sail around the world alone in the BOC Challenge, a single-handed yacht race. 27000 nautical miles of sailing in 4 stages Alan started the race in September 1994. Alan and 19 others sailed out of Charleston Harbour, in South Carolina USA and after 181 days at sea, Alan arrived back to see the lights of Charleston again after an epic voyage. Many times not knowing if he could but knowing inside that he would.  The complete story of the voyage is laid out in his book “Against All Odds”.  Alan raised the funds from multiple contributors and community support. Alan started building his Yacht,  “Newcastle Australia” with a huge step of faith and belief this would happen. Through many trials and tribulations, he built it. He sailed to the start line in South Carolina halfway around the world to begin his solo BOC Challenge Race arriving 1 ½ hour before the cut-off time. So I guess you could say he has sailed 1 and a half times around the world that year.  Alan didn't win the race, he placed 4th, but won the hearts and respect of all who sailed with him in the race. Alan won two medals for seamanship. The first for saving the life of a fellow competitor and the second for sailing jury-rigged around Cape Horn. Alan's alternator died, his computer failed, he could not receive weather reports or fleet updates for several weeks, had to deal with 50-foot plus waves, cyclonic winds, snow, hail, being dismasted, losing a rudder, seas that rolled the boat over and over, surviving the doldrums and missing his wife and family for nine months of racing during preparation for the race and during the race.  I invited Alan into this podcast series because of all the people I know, Alan depicts someone for me who decided to plan a life he wants to live in. He is the most determined person I have ever met.  I enjoyed Part 2 of the discussion with Alan just as much as the first, I hope you enjoy as well.

Alan is an avid sailor and a very practical no-frills type of person. When I asked him to share with us on this podcast he said ”Well I haven't really done anything that special!”. By the end of this podcast, parts 1 and 2, you will begin to realise how understated that comment was.  I first met Alan in the early 90s. From the first time we met, I noticed something different about Alan. He had a quiet demeanour but a fierce determination and a passion for sailing.   A few years earlier Alan had met his wife Cindy and within 10 weeks they were married and set off to sail across the Pacific to the USA and Canada.  As they hadn't really known each other long before they were married, Alan and Cindy got to know each other extremely well over the next 6 months on this epic voyage across the Pacific.  Alan and Cindy lived on their boat, a Top Hat 25 ft small cruising yacht, for several years while attending Bible College and working in Canada and the USA. After college Alan sailed regularly up and down the West Coast of the USA professionally delivering boats for yacht builders and brokers to their new owners. They sailed back to Australia via Mexico and the Pacific Islands with Cindy and their infant daughter Anny.  Settling back into the Lake Macquarie area and working in a family business for a time, Alan felt the seas calling him again. I thoroughly enjoyed chatting with Alan, and I hope you enjoy Part 1 of our conversation.

What is the correct way to address sexism in sport and life? And is it much less commonplace than it was in say 1989? That was the year Tracy Edwards skippered the first all-female crew in the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race, becoming the first woman to receive the Yachtsman of the Year Trophy and was awarded an MBE honour. She didn’t set off as a feminist, but she certainly came back one. She sits down in the episode with Simon Mundie to discuss her experience of sexism in sailing round the world, how it changed her, and how commonplace it is in life now. Tracy’s boat was called Maiden, also the name of a documentary film charting Tracy’s journey. As well as sexism, Simon and Tracy discuss following your dreams, the negative and positive power of anger and self acceptance.

This episode is sponsored by Forbes Horton Yachts. Visit forbesyachts.com. Bob Shepton might not be a household name in the US, but he certainly is in the UK. He was honored as ‘Yachtsman of the Year' in 2014, which may sound irrelevant until you realize the winners in 2013 & 2015 - that would be Sir Ben Ainslie & Sir Robin Knox-Johnston. Good company indeed. Anyway, Bob is one of the most accomplished and yet most humble sailors I’ve ever met. My interview with him was like sitting down with your favorite grandfather and hearing him tell old stories. We could have talked for hours, and Bob seemed to enjoy every second of it. In this series that explores those pieces of music that never fail to move us, this week we feature, 'The Impossible Dream', a song that talks of the resilience of the human spirit. It tells the story of a quest and it's had a surprising journey of it's own. It was originally composed for the 1965 musical The Man of La Mancha which was inspired by Miguel de Cervantes story of Don Quixote. The music was written by Mitch Leigh and the lyrics by Joe Darion. Now in his 80's Leigh explains how his first writing partner was WH Auden and talks about why this particular piece struck a chord with African American friends at that time. Generations on, international Soprano Lesley Garrett recalls how this song inspired her childhood dreams in Doncaster, Yachtsman of the Year Geoff Holt talks about how this song carried him across the Atlantic on one of the most important voyages of his life and former advertising executive Rob Chew explains how this piece is helping him face lifes biggest challenge. Producer Nicola Humphries.
