On the podcast today, we have Sé Reed and Courtney Robertson, and they're here to talk about the WP Community Collective, or WPCC for short. The WPCC is a non-profit that is hoping to fund contributors to the WordPress project. WordPress is built on top of a dedicated base of volunteers. People give up their time and expertise to contribute towards the project, and in this way make it free to download and use. But we all have to earn money at some point. Most are not in a position to donate their time completely freely; they have to put food on the table. Often contributors are sponsored by the companies that they work for, either part time or full time. There's nothing wrong with this model, but what about the capable, willing volunteers who are not in this position? The people who have the skills and motivation to contribute, but not the time or finances to make that a reality. The WPCC wants to act as a go between for companies or organisations who are willing to spend money improving WordPress, and the individuals who can implement those improvements. WordPress 6.2 is scheduled for release on March 28, 2023. But it's never too early to start preparations. Therefore, you may want to check out the first beta release, which is now available for testing.The first major release of 2023 brings a plethora of enhancements to the Site and Block Editors. Some features, such as color coded template parts within the Site Editor, focus on improved usability. But there are a few big picture changes as well.For one, the ability to search and download Openverse images will be included in the Block Editor. This allows anyone to grab Creative Commons licensed media from within their website. Also included are a revamped Navigation block, a Style Book feature for creating custom styles, and sticky blocks.To see what else is new, GoDaddy Pro's Courtney Robertson has published a detailed guide on WordPress 6.2.Links You Shouldn't MissWhen it comes to WordPress core, newer doesn't always mean faster. Core committer Adam Silverstein has submitted a proposal to change that. According to a report from WP Tavern, Silverstein's proposal calls for automated performance monitoring. The goal is to catch potential problems before they reach the average user.Last December, we reported on the WP Community Collective (WPCC). The not-for-profit organization aims to financially support contributions to the WordPress project. This week it was announced that Alex Stine has been selected as the first WPCC Fellow. Stine is currently a member of the WordPress Accessibility team and will continue in that role. The WPCC is still looking for donations in order to fully fund Stine's fellowship.Twitter recently announced that free access to its API will no longer be available as of February 9, 2023. That's likely to impact both WordPress plugin developers and end users. It's a familiar refrain: the WordPress project needs contributors. But getting involved can be difficult for individuals who aren't corporately sponsored. A new nonprofit organization is hoping to address this ongoing challenge. The WP Community Collective looks to offer community-funded fellowships to financially support contributions to WordPress. Founded by Sé Reed, Katie Adams Farrell, and Courtney Robertson, the WPCC seeks both individual donations and corporate partnerships. In its official announcement, the organization vows to promote transparency, community representation, and governance. Its first initiative involves the creation of an Accessibility Fellowship. These abilities enable kids to chart their own course in life--they act like an internal compass or guidance system. As a powerful community-building tool leading to a better understanding of what makes both youth and seniors thrive on Bainbridge Island, Marilyn is inviting seniors (50+adults) and high school seniors to participate in a Senior-to-Senior story share project. Each team of participants will move through a series of 6 weekly conversations designed to inspire meaningful reflection and sharing of lessons learned around these 8 core abilities. This will be tied with a research project so that StoryShare participants will have the opportunity to contribute to research that will help parents, teachers, and our whole community better learn about the relationships and experiences that nurture the ‘compass abilities' beginning in childhood. From BCB... http://bestofbcb.org/wu-213-first-sundays-concert-january-3/ Not long after pianist/piano teacher Darden Burns moved to Bainbridge Island 31 years ago, she decided Bainbridge needed a quality professional piano and a place to play it.  She formed a nonprofit called “Bainbridge Community Piano Association” (now partly funded through One Call for All) to purchase the piano and maintain it.  Though it took her 5 years to raise $30,000 for the very special Yamaha C6 piano now installed at the Waterfront Park Community Center, it was worth it: the acoustics make the center a perfect location for concerts. Once the piano was in place, Darden established the First Sunday's Concert Series.  A mix of Darden's favorite music styles -- classical and jazz  -- the concerts feature monthly performances by high caliber jazz and classical musicians (excluding summer months).  Though the concerts are not always on the first Sunday due to schedule conflicts, you can always check the First Sunday's Concert website -- http://www.firstsundaysconcerts.org -- to find out what's coming up next and when. On January 3rd at 4pm, Trio Pardalote, a dynamic women's chamber music trio, will introduce the 2016 season for the First Sunday's Concerts. From BCB... http://bestofbcb.org/wu-191-village-concept-update-october-18/ Since its formal introduction to the island back in February, the Village movement and its potential impact for Bainbridge Island has sparked lots of conversation and interest. Three planning meetings have been held since February, involving 70 + interested people, and a temporary steering team has been identified. After a summer spent working together to synthesize what's been learned to date, that committee is ready to report on its findings and progress to date. A meeting has therefore been scheduled for October 18 from 2-4 at the Waterfront Park Community Center.  This meeting is for all the people who already understand what a village is and have come to at least one meeting and are familiar with the work being done locally.  That group will be updated on all the work created so far, and on the structure, the parameters, and the partnerships that have been established to date. The group will also share information gleaned from the national conference on villages, and then explain the specific opportunities available to folks that want to see this work move forward. So the October 18th event is truly an update for all the folks that have already been engaged in the work-to-date. For those who are curious but have not yet attended a village meeting, two additional "Village 101" meetings have been scheduled for November 21st and December 13; interested parties only need to come to one of those to catch up.  For more information about the village concept, visit BIVillage.org.
