Budget Friendly Grocery Tips - Money Tip Tuesday

Making Money Personal

If you've been feeling that the cost of groceries seems too expensive and your budget is taking a hit, it may be time to reevaluate your grocery shopping strategy. Fortunately, there are a variety of ways to cut down on the amount of money you're spending on your weekly grocery bill.   Links: USDA Seasonal Produce Guide Explore meal-planning apps: Yummly Mealime Meal Prep Pro Check out TCU University for more financial education tips and resources!  Follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter!  Learn more about Triangle Credit Union Transcript: Welcome to Money Tip Tuesday from the Making Money Personal podcast.   The price of groceries continues to climb for many Americans across the country. If you're one of those noticing the rise in the cost of groceries, try some of these strategies to save money the next time you head to the supermarket.   Shop seasonal produce. Depending on where you live, you may find that certain produce is cheaper depending on its season, especially if it's local. In-season produce is more abundant and doesn't need to be transported from distant locations. Both these factors contribute to lowering the price, which makes it easier for customers to save money when they shop. If you're unfamiliar with when to shop for your favorite produce, the USDA published a list online to make it easier for people to recognize what seasons are the best times to buy certain produce items. You can check that link out in the show notes.    Use store apps and rewards programs. To increase brand loyalty, many stores roll out rewards programs for shoppers. They offer store cards or use their own branded apps to track and use rewards points, offer discounts on store brand items, and even provide manufacturers coupons on name brands. If you find yourself going to the same grocery store regularly, check to see what kind of rewards program they offer. Using a store program that provides good discounts can save you a lot of money over time.    Get organized to stop yourself from overbuying. Have you ever gone to the store and purchased an item you were sure you were out of only to find out you already had it stocked at home? Before shopping take a picture of your fridge or pantry to have a visual reminder of what you already have stocked. You can also create and display inventory sheets that track items in your pantry or freezer as you use them. If you keep it updated regularly, you'll never wonder again while you're at the store if you were out of ketchup or soy sauce.  Don't underestimate the value of frozen produce. Oftentimes, frozen fruits and veggies are cheaper than their fresh counterparts and because they're frozen at their peak freshness, they're likely the more nutritious option. If you find yourself purchasing the same types of veggies or fruits regularly try buying them frozen instead. It could save you money, cut down on spoilage and overall help your health.  Commit to meal planning. Getting organized about what you'll make during the week is an effective way to avoid the wastefulness of overbuying. Use a planner or notebook to plan out meals ahead of time. For those more technologically savvy, try an app like Yummly, Mealtime [Mealime], and Meal Prep Pro to help you stay organized with meal planning. Not only can you schedule meals, but they also automatically build shopping lists for you based on your meal selections, so you'll know exactly what to buy next time you go to the store. They also offer additional features and tools like nutrition guidance and dietary suggestions.  Consider buying more dry bulk items like beans and lentils. These items are usually very low in cost, and they offer a lot of nutritional value. One part of dried beans can equal three parts cooked. This makes it easy to cook a large meal out of seemingly small ingredients. With the addition of all kinds of seasonings and spices, beans and lentils can make a flavorful dish that can last all week; ultimately a great meal prep item. Explore the internet or one of the apps mentioned earlier for a variety of recipes you can make with these affordable and nutritious ingredients.   For anyone trying to keep their grocery shopping within a set budget, try out some of these suggestions. If you have any other tips not covered here, go ahead and share with us on social media. There might be someone out there who can benefit from it.   If there are any other tips or topics you'd like us to cover, let us know at tcupodcast@trianglecu.org. This week on the Food Tech News Show we are joined by Scott Heimendinger, one of the inventors of the home sous vide circulator and a long-time kitchen tech inventor.  Here are the stories we talk about: Apple is working on robots for the home! – From Bloomberg: “The original concept for the robot was a device that could navigate entirely on its own without human intervention — like the car — and serve as a videoconferencing tool. One pie-in-the-sky idea within Apple was having it be able to handle chores, like cleaning dishes in a sink. Google has used its latest AI to create a new tool that creates a fusion recipe between two culinary cultures. Lifehacker: “According to Google,  Food Mood can provide creative inspiration for your next meal. Select two countries and this fusion recipe generator will create one for you. You can choose whether you would like to cook a starter, a soup, a main course or a dessert. For example, why not try a unique blend of flavors from Sri Lanka and Uganda or mixing influences from Oman and Belgium? This experiment was created by artists Emmanuel Durgoni and Gaël Hugo, and uses Gemini 1.0 Pro via Vertex AI.” Whirlpool has let the entire Yummly team go. Appliance giant Whirlpool has laid off its entire Yummly team. According to industry sources, the company recently laid off all the employees for the recipe and cooking app and website. These sources tell the Spoon that it's unclear what the company plans to do with the property it acquired in 2017. Amazon Pulling ‘Just Walk Out' from Amazon Fresh Grocery Stores – According to a story published in The Information, Amazon is planning to pull its Just Walk Out cashierless technology from its large-format grocery store, Amazon Fresh. One Robot Pizza Chain Operator Breaks Down the Cost Each Part of the Pizza-Making Process – For small operators (and big ones as well) in the pizza business, Andrew Simmons's posts on Linkedin have become must-read material. Scott will be at the Smart Kitchen Summit, talking about some of the lessons he's learned building the kitchen of the future. "We all gossip. We all listen to gossip. But it is possible, if you're willing to exercise awareness, to begin to discriminate about how and when you do it. Obviously, you can't cut out all conversation about other people, and you don't have to. Instead, you can make your conversations more conscious, more disciplined, more measured. You can contemplate exactly why you sometimes feel compelled to bad-mouth a friend, or to spread a rumor that might cause harm. You can look into the feeling of emptiness that often lurks behind the urge to fill spaces in a conversation with gossip. And you can consider whether one of the greatest fruits of our practice is the ability to remain silent, even when you're dying to share a piece of juicy gossip or justify your dissatisfaction with a friend." - Yoga Journal At the end of the day, our goal is to find the path to compassion versus judgement. Our goal is to be connected to our truth, our happiness, our healing, and our own struggles in order to release judgement and find that compassion for others. That we are all trying our best and we don't always know the first story before the one we've been told. I hope this episode makes you feel better. Because as humans, we are wired to judge. But we can always be more conscious with our conversation, it's a place to start. Wow we are all doing so much cooking and I'm so proud of us. This is just a reminder to try to use up what you've got before buying more.  A simple way to do this is to use an app like Yummly www.yummly.com  You can input random ingredients and their algorithm will spit back recipes you can make with what you have on hand.  You can also set parameters like low-fat, low-carb, vegetarian etc. Remember too that if you don't bring junk food into your house you won't be able to eat junk food.  Buy fresh foods, take the time to make healthy snacks and meals.   We got this!

Everything now in your home has become "smart" and your kitchen is no exception. KitchenAid has come out with a very smart oven to help make cooking easier and fun. The KitchenAid Smart Oven+ is a new idea for revolutionizing your meal prep. Taking inspiration from their very popular stand mixer, the new oven currently offers options to expand your cooking capabilities. This very versatile oven is designed with a modular plug that connects to three different attachments. The first one is a grilling rack that has high-intensity heat for faster cooking and searing. It's like grilling outdoors without worrying about the weather. The heating element fits down inside the grate and the grease drips down inside so there are no flare-ups. This design also helps for a more evenly heated surface. The steamer attachment is another option. The pan is quite large so you can easily plan a meal for the entire family. This also is great for desserts such as cheesecake, souffles or creme brulees. It provides a water bath that is very important to such foods. A third attachment is a baking stone. This one is porcelain covered enamel that heats very quickly and makes your food very crisp, especially nice for pizza and French fries. All of these are Yummly-integrated and that makes it very easy to cook even when you are not at home. Yummly is an app that is for guided cooking, which is very helpful to the novice cook or even an experienced one. The app also features Yummly pros, such as Carla Hall that will walk you through some of their recipes. It can be connected to your mobile device to help you start or stop the oven, or even adjust the temperature during the cooking time. The price point for the Smart Oven+ is $3000. for the single oven with a microwave above and $4700. for the double oven. First, it contains over 2 million recipes from the best of the best top recipe sites and food blogs like Allrecipes, Epicurious, Food52, Smitten Kitchen, and more. It can be personalized to your tastes & dietary needs.  You tell Yummly your diets, allergies, tastes, and preferences and they'll only serve up recipes that match. As you use Yummly, like magic, it learns about what you like. The more you Yum, the better it gets! It offers step-by-step recipes, including video tutorials, timers, and more handy tools to make cooking a breeze.  Perhaps my favorite feature is the one I use when in a pinch.  You know, end (or beginning) of the week and the refridgerator is looking pretty bare.  Simply click the search buttom at the bottom of the screen and add up the ingredients you have. I tried the following search ong for these ingredients: sweet potato, ground turkey, cheddar cheese, and eggs and Yummly delivered some great recipes including Turkey Meatloafs, Shepeard's Pie, and even a breakfast casserole that all sounded, well, YUUMY! Super Simple Healthy Podcast

Welcome to the Super Simple Healthy Podcast! This is Christina Moyes. The Happy COOKER! In today’s episode I am going to talk to you about how to make cooking, SIMPLE and fun! YES fun! Really! I admit, I wasn’t a fan for a long time. And I cook more out of necessity than because I have passion for it. But if you would like to start eating healthier and don’t know where to start or think it’s going to be too hard, time consuming or costly, this episode is for YOU! The Happy Cooker So if you want to get back in the kitchen – at least a maybe get your toe wet before you dive in – but you’re not sure where to start, you’ve come to the right place. I myself was never a big fan of cooking from an early age. You may remember from my very first episode I mentioned how my mom would drag my sister and I into the kitchen on occasion and show us how to make this or truss that or something she felt we should know how to do. Those are times I WISH I’d listened a little more. But it was the late 70’s and women’s lib was in full bloom and I just felt my future husband had better be paying more attention in the kitchen than I because HE was going to be doing the cooking in our house. I was a terrible cook in college, but I did experiment. Not many things turned out well. Even after college, I still stuck to simple salads and pasta, maybe boiled up some frozen broccoli, potatoes or peas. I was NOT good at just throwing things together and adding this spice or that sauce and creating a masterpiece. But I also didn’t care to. I don’t think anything radically changed until I started learning about food and how it works for you or against you. When something becomes important enough, THAT’s when people start to take ACTION and make changes. Once I realized cooking wasn’t just something they did in the 50’s, but it was something I needed to do in order to feel better and to help my children grow up strong and healthy, THAT’S when I got interested! I started looking for healthier recipes with more variety. And it wasn’t so hard. You see cooking is just like any other skill. You need to practice. It won’t be perfect right from the start, although sometimes you MAY get lucky. And I don’t believe the old adage: “practice makes perfect” – but there CAN be “practice-makes-pretty-damn-good!” Here are 2 Rules to Start: 1) Keep it simple. You can go all “Martha Stewart fancy” once in a while, but stick to 2-5 ingredients at most. Yummly.com is a great resource for all kinds of recipes and it will allow you to input your dietary restrictions and preferences so every time you login, those recipes that fit those parameters will show up JUST for YOU! 2) Give yourself a break. Mistakes are ok. Start with one new dish and don’t give up. First time may be burnt, second time, better, third time JUST right and fourth time – delicious! For more Happy Cooker tips, visit the downloads page on my website at supersimplehealthy.com or sign up for a Super Simple cooking class. But above all: Start. And remember, practice doesn’t make PERFECT, Practice makes Possible! Until next time: Keep it Simple Be Healthy. https://supersimplehealthy.com

Hey foodies, this week we've got Dave Feller from Yummly.comDave has always had a passion for food. Throughout the years he’s been looking to get more involved with food – even considering opening a restaurant at one point. In addition to always wanting a great meal (cooking, at a friend’s house, restaurant, or a dive), Dave has spent a fair amount of time in the internet world. Dave was an early member of Half.com in Philly, running Marketing & Strategy. He moved to California to continue working for eBay, who had acquired Half.com, and became GM of a $500M portion of the US business. Dave left eBay in 2006 to be VP Marketing & Business Operations for StumbleUpon. Through an acquisition, Dave ended back up at eBay…again. He finally left in late 2008 to pursue his passion, a site now called Yummly.
