This week on The Curatorial Blonde we have Allison Glenn. Allison Glenn is a New York-based curator and writer focusing on the intersection of art and public space, through public art and special projects, biennials, and major new commissions by a wide range of contemporary artists. She is a Visiting Curator in the Department of Film Studies at the University of Tulsa, organizing the Sovereign Futures convening, and Artistic Director of The Shepherd, a three-and-a-half-acre arts campus part of the newly christened Little Village cultural district in Detroit.  Previous roles include Co-Curator of Counterpublic Triennial 2023; Senior Curator at New York's Public Art Fund, where she proposed and developed Fred Eversley: Parabolic Light (2023) and Edra Soto Graft (2024) for Doris C. Freedman Plaza; Guest Curator at the Speed Art Museum, and Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. In this role, Glenn shaped how outdoor sculpture activates and engages Crystal Bridges 120-acre campus through a series of new commissions, touring group exhibitions, and long-term loans. She also realized site-specific architectural interventions, such as Joanna Keane Lopez, A dance of us (un baile de nosotros), (2020), as part of State of the Art 2020 at The Momentary. She acted as the Curatorial Associate + Publications Manager for Prospect New Orleans' international art triennial Prospect.4: The Lotus in Spite of the Swamp. A Curatorial Fellowship with the City of Chicago's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, culminated with In the beginning, sometimes I left messages in the street (2016), a citywide billboard and performance exhibition. As Program Manager at University of Chicago's Arts Incubator, she worked with a team led by Theaster Gates to develop the emergent space, where she curated exhibitions and commissioned performances such as Amun: The Unseen Legends (2014), a new performance from Terry Adkin's Lone Wolf Recital Corps, that included Kamau Patton. Glenn has been a visiting critic, lecturer, and guest speaker at a number of universities, including The University of Tulsa, University of Pennsylvania, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Louisiana State University, and Pacific Northwest College of Art. Her writing has been featured in catalogues published by The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Neubauer Collegium, Counterpublic Triennial, Prospect New Orleans Triennial, Princeton Architectural Press, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, Kemper Museum, Studio Museum in Harlem, and she has contributed to Artforum, ART PAPERS, Brooklyn Rail, Hyperallergic, ART21 Magazine, Pelican Bomb, Ruckus Journal, and Newcity, amongst others. Her 2021 exhibition Promise, Witness, Remembrance was name one of the Best Art Exhibitions of 2021 by The New York Times. Glenn is a member of Madison Square Park Conservancy's Public Art Consortium Collaboration Committee and sits on the Board of Directors for ARCAthens, a curatorial and artist residency program based in Athens, Greece, New Orleans, LA and The Bronx, New York. She received dual Master's degrees from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Modern Art History, Theory and Criticism and Arts Administration and Policy, and a Bachelor of Fine Art Photography with a co-major in Urban Studies from Wayne State University in Detroit.

Roman Stollenwerk, Assistant Curator for the Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art at Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga, discusses their newest exhibit, Seeing the Unseen: Math and Art, open to the public now through March 9. Then Debra Scacco, Guest Curator for the Ontario Museum of History and Art, talks about their newest art exhibit Conduit, inspired by the recently opened Built on Water exhibit. Conduit is open February 15 – May 19, 2024.

Ken Gross is the Concours Director for this year's Fourth Annual Chattanooga Motorcar Festival, a three-day festival that includes multiple events including a wheel-to-wheel race car exhibitions, and a Concours d'Elegance and more. Ken's career in the automotive world includes time as the Executive Director and Guest Curator for the Petersen Automotive Museum. He's curated numerous highly acclaimed exhibitions across the country. He's authored over 25 automotive books on a wide variety of historic vehicles, and is a member of ICJAG, the International Chief Judge Advisory Group. Ken has judged in most of the finest Concours d'Elegances in the world and had received the Automotive Hall of Fame Distinguished Service Citation, the Lorin Tryon Trophy at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, The Ken Purdy award from the International Motor Press Association, and the Dean Bachelor Lifetime Achievement Award to name just a few.

Since first meeting Tom in 1978, Durk worked closely with the artist, serving from time to time as Tom's muse which continued until Tom's death in 1991. We also chat with Richard Villiani, the foundation's Creative Director.In 1984, the nonprofit Tom of Finland Foundation (ToFF) was established by Durk and Touko Laaksonen a.k.a. Tom of Finland (b.1920, Kaarina). As Tom had established worldwide recognition as the master of homoerotic art, the Foundation's original purpose was to preserve his vast catalog of work. Several years later the scope was widened to offer a safe haven for all erotic art in response to rampant discrimination against art that portrayed sexual behavior or generated a sexual response. Today ToFF continues in its efforts of educating the public as to the cultural merits of erotic art and in promoting healthier, more tolerant attitudes about sexuality. Unlike many artists, Tom of Finland's work has always been appreciated by a grass-roots audience as his work was first seen in commercial settings such as magazine illustration, posters and advertising. From the perspective of art historians, Tom's work had an effect on global culture unmatched by that of virtually any other artist. Tom's work had a defining impact on the way Gay men throughout the world were perceived and more importantly, how they perceived themselves. In honor of its sixtieth anniversary, the Hyde Collection in Glens Falls, New York presents the exhibition: "Songs of the Horizon: David Smith, Music, and Dance." The right of every United States citizen to vote in local, state, and national elections is as American as the laws that have barred many groups from accessing the ballot box. Women, people of color, the unhoused––all have fought to claim their rightful place at the table of democracy. So, too, have Native Americans. This season, we've partnered with the New Mexico History Museum (NMHM) to bring you the fascinating story of Native American suffrage before and after Trujillo v. Garley, the landmark case of 1948.  In 1948, Miguel Trujillo (Isleta Pueblo) walked into the Valencia County clerk's office with the intent to register to vote as a Native American. He was denied, of course. This affront set in motion a legal challenge that would eventually topple decades of institutionalized discrimination. But the story of Trujillo v. Garley doesn't end there. Nor does it begin on that fateful day.  Stephanie Padilla (Isleta Pueblo), attorney for the Children's Court, State of New Mexico, joins Charlotte Jusinski as co-host this season. Dr. Susan Bright is an Australian/British curator currently based in London. She has a specialisation in lens-based arts and contemporary visual culture with an emphasis on cross-disciplinary and international programming. She was a curator at the National Portrait Gallery in London before deciding to work independently in the early 2000s. Her professional life has brought her to live in London, New York and Paris where she has worked with many institutions on a wide range of projects. These include: Tate, Barbican, The Royal Academy, The Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, Saint Louis Museum of Art, Phoenix Art Museum, and The New York Public Library. In 2007 she co-curated the landmark exhibition How We Are at Tate Britain. This was the first major exhibition of British photography ever held at Tate. In the same year she curated Face of Fashion at the National Portrait Gallery, London. Other significant exhibitions include: Home Truths at The Photographers' Gallery and The Foundling Museum, London (2014) and Playground at Serlachius Museum, Finland (2018). Her survey exhibition Feast for the Eyes toured to six major museums and galleries in Europe, Canada and the USA (2018-2021). In 2019 she was Guest Curator at PHotoESPAÑA. Exhibitions were held at Fernán Gómez Centro Cultural de la Villa, Museo Lázaro Galdiano and the Museo del Romanticismo in Madrid. In 2021 she was co-curator of f/stop 9: Festival für Fotografie in Leipzig. Bright is regularly invited to be a visiting speaker, critic and scholar at universities worldwide. She taught curatorial practice and visual culture to both art and art history students for fifteen years at institutions including Parsons and the School of Visual Arts in New York and Sotheby's Institute and University of the Arts, London. She has authored and co-authored seven books. Her interdisciplinary practice explores the experience of the Black Diasporic female body in the united states of amerikkka through the examination and deconstruction of historical and contemporary narratives. She is interested in the public, private, and civic negotiations of race, gender, and class in addition to the effect and practice of violence, and surveillance on the body. Belinda Wurn, PT, is the Director of Services for Clear Passage Therapies. She graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in physical therapy from the University of Florida in 1975. With extensive post-graduate work and decades of professional experience, she is considered an expert in the causes and treatments for various types of sexual dysfunction, including decreased orgasm, desire, arousal, lubrication and satisfaction, and painful intercourse. Larry Wurn, LMT, is the CEO of Clear Passage Therapies. He graduated from San Francisco State University in 1972 with a BS in English/Creative Writing, and graduated from the Florida Institute of Natural Health in 1990 to become a Florida-licensed massage therapist. After his role as Guest Curator at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, he became reacquainted with his childhood love, Belinda. As they prepared to marry, she was diagnosed with cancer – and thus their journey to discovering the natural treatment for adhesions began. A new vocabulary in the visual arts, Africa in the Arts of Philadelphia: A conversation with Guest Curator, Susanna W. Gold, PhD. This episode is part of a series created for “Africa in the Arts of Philadelphia: Bullock, Searles, and Twins Seven-Seven,” an exhibition on view at Woodmere Art Museum from February 8 through May 17, 2020. Woodmere, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is dedicated to the telling the story of the art and artists of the region.

The Renaissance Society is a contemporary art space that has a very strong character when it comes to architectural design. Artist David Maljković describes it as a “monumental space that is one dimensional with a really particular condition of light.” The vinyl floors are so present—not concrete or plastic—they are tactile. Known for his collaborative approach to curation and attention to details, Maljković worked with Renaissance Society curator Karsten Lund for the exhibit “Also on View,” to select works that complement the space. The Weekly’s Manisha AR, sat down with both artist and curator to go behind the scenes of the exhibit and talk about the ways in which the space inspired the show. He currently lives and works in Zagreb, Croatia. He has presented solo exhibitions at Palais de Tokyo in Paris; Van Abbe museum, Eindhoven; Bergen Kunsthall, Norway; BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, UK; Museo Reina Sofía, Madrid; MoMA PS1, New York; and several other museums and galleries. His work has been included in prominent group exhibitions around the world such as the 56th Biennale di Venezia, 29th Sao Paulo Biennial, and two of the Istanbul Biennials, among many others. Chicago-based curator Karsten Lund has been with the Renaissance Society for the past three years and curated multiple shows in the space. Prior, he worked as a Curatorial Assistant at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and as a Research Fellow and Guest Curator with the Museum of Photography. “Also on View” is open until April 7, 2019. Marýa is currently the Director of International Initiatives at Movement Research and Project Manager for Angela's Pulse/Dancing While Black, David Thomson and others. From 2007-2014, she worked in the Programming Department at New York Live Arts (formerly Dance Theater Workshop/DTW) as the International Project Director of the Suitcase Fund program, where she developed a cultural exchange program with contemporary dance artists in the USA and Africa, and managed the program activities in Eastern/Central Europe. Marýa is a Guest Curator of the Queer New York International Arts Festival (2016 & 2015 editions) and curated the Out of Space @ BRIC Studio series for Danspace Project (2003-2007) with a particular focus on work representing the perspectives and experiences of artists who are of color, queer, and/or female. She has served on selection panels for several presenting and funding organizations in NY and nationally, including the NEA, LMCC, Brooklyn Arts Council, Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, and as an Advisor to NEFA's National Dance Project program. She has served as a guest lecturer for presenting/service organizations and college/university dance programs in the tristate area. Marýa is a core member of the Movement Research Artists of Color Council and was a member of the New York Dance & Performance/Bessie Award Committee (2006-07). Her writing has appeared in the Configurations in Motion: Curating and Communities of Color publication, organized by Thomas DeFrantz at Duke University (2016 & 2015), and her essay UnCHARTed Legacies: women of color in post-modern dance, was published in the 25th Anniversary Movement Research Performance Journal #27/28 (2004). Marýa has been featured in interviews/articles in the MRPJ #47 (Fall 2015) and Gay City News (June 2006). Marýa is a recipient of a National Performance Network Mentorship & Leadership award and two APAP Cultural Exchange Fund grants. Marýa graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 1997 with a BA in Dance and a Minor in African-American Studies. Dan Fishback is a playwright, musician, and director of the Helix Queer Performance Network. Previous work includes “The Material World” (Top 10 Plays of 2012 - Time Out New York) and “thirtynothing” (2011), which were both developed at BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange and performed at Dixon Place, and “You Will Experience Silence” (2009), which the Village Voice called “sassier and more fun than ‘Angels in America.’” As a singer songwriter, and with his band Cheese On Bread, Fishback has toured Europe and North America, and has released five full-length albums. As Helix director, he teaches workshops, organizes public events, and curates and produces a variety of festivals and series, including "La MaMa's Squirts." Ken Gross is an award winning automotive journalist and has contributed to almost every car magazine you’ve ever enjoyed reading. He was the Executive Director of the Petersen Automotive Museum and has served as Guest Curator for numerous other prestigious museums around the country. Along with exhibition catalogs, Ken’s written fifteen automotive books and has been a Chief Class Judge for 25 years at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and he also serves on their Selection Committee. He’s judged numerous other concours events across the country from Amelia Island to Rodeo Drive.

Suzan Shown Harjo (Cheyenne and Hodulgee Muscogee) is a poet, writer, lecturer, curator and policy advocate, who has helped Native Peoples recover more than one million acres of land, including many sacred places. She has developed key laws in four decades to promote and protect Native nations, sovereignty, children, arts, cultures and languages. Former Executive Director of the National Congress of American Indians, she was Legislative Liaison for two law firms and served on the Native American Policy Committee for Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign and as an Advisor to the Transition in 2008-2009. Ms. Harjo is President of The Morning Star Institute, a national Native rights organization founded in 1984 for Native Peoples’ traditional and cultural advocacy, arts promotion and research. Ms. Harjo is one of seven Native people who filed the 1992 landmark case, Harjo et al v. Pro Football, Inc., against the disparaging name of the Washington football team.  Ms. Harjo organized an identical suit, Blackhorse et al v. Pro Football, Inc., which was filed in 2006 by six Native young people. In 2010, Ms. Harjo and five other Native people filed formal protests of new trademark requests. Ms. Harjo is Guest Curator and General Editor for the National Museum of the American Indian’s upcoming exhibit and book, Treaties: Great Nations In Their Own Words. She serves on the Banff Centre Aboriginal Program Council, the Working Group on Unidentified Human Remains and the Mount Graham Coalition.   Ms. Harjo was “Seeing Red” Co-Producer and Drama & Literature Director for the Pacifica Network’s WBAI-FM Radio in New York City.  She was News Director of the American Indian Press Association and Founding Co-Chair of The Howard Simons Fund for American Indian Journalists.
