To get you excited about Saturday night's Save the 10,000 with Des and Kara, this episode is all about Kara's history with the event. She talks about 10,000m legends Lynn Jennings and Billy Mills and how they inspired her to want to be an Olympian. She gives the story of how she WALKED in her very first 10,000 on the track, seemingly swearing off the event for good. She details coming back to the distance at later time and surprising herself in her 2nd attempt at the distance. Then of course, she shares the play-by-play on her historic medal in the 10,000 at Osaka in 2007 that would change her running life forever. This episode is here to remind you why the 10,000 is worth saving. We hope you enjoy. If you are in Southern California on Saturday night (May 3rd), then go see the event in person at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, CA. Admission is free. Otherwise, you can stream for free on RunnerSpace. The men's race starts at 8 pm PST, and the women's race closes the night at 8:45 pm. Thank you also to all of the sponsors for the event: BioBrace, Old Spice, Secret, The Sport Specialist, Lever Movement, Pacers Running, and of course Brooks Running. Please show those sponsors some love!
LET'S PRETEND- Let's Pretend started radio life as The Adventures of Helen and Mary in 1934 when it was transformed by Nila Mack into the show that would last for two decades until 1954. Mack believed that, if the stories were for children, then children should tell the story. On July 12, 1947, they told the tale of "The Brave Little Tailor" for sponsor, Cream of Wheat. A meek little man has "killed seven with one blow" and has everyone terrified. The program ran from 1942 to 1960. The program's stunts and audience participation were calculated to reveal the humorous side of human nature. After contestants were sent from the studio to perform a task in public, the audience was told how the contestant was being double-crossed. It's a tremendous honor for me to share my podcast with Olympic legend and humanitarian, Billy Mills. Billy Mills was born in 1938 and grew up on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, home to the Oglala Lakota Nation. Billy had a very difficult childhood, losing his mother, sister, and father by the age of 12. He turned to running as both an escape and a source of discipline. After his father's passing, Billy attended the Haskell Institute, a U.S. government run boarding school for Native American children. Schools like Haskell were controversial for their forced assimilation, physical and emotional abuse, and systematically trying to erase their students Indigenous identities. Billy, though, had a positive experience at Haskell, where he met his coach Tony Coffin, who became somewhat of a father figure to him. Coffin recognized Billy's talent and helped nurture his running abilities, providing him with the foundation that would later lead to his collegiate and Olympic success. Also, during his time at Haskell, Billy spent one of his summers as a counselor at Camp Greylock in Beckett, Massachusetts, which is the summer camp that I went to many years later and is a very important part of my life. So it's very special for me to share this link with Billy. At Haskell, Billy won multiple state championships in track and cross country, earning him a scholarship to the University of Kansas, where Billy would be coached by Bill Easton. Easton was a highly respected track and field coach who led Kansas to multiple NCAA championships, and at Kansas, Billy was one of the best distance runners in the country. He was a three time All American, won multiple Big Eight titles, and was runner up in the 1960 cross country championships. Through all of this, however, Billy faced numerous challenges, including discrimination at every level, including from Easton, hypoglycemia, and struggles with self doubt. At times, Billy even contemplated suicide, and in his senior year, he walked off the track and quit the team completely. Fortunately for Billy, the University of Kansas is also where he met and began dating a young woman named Patricia Pat Collins. Pat played a crucial role in Billy's journey, supporting him through the challenges he faced as an athlete and as a Native American navigating the world of elite sports. After graduating Kansas, Billy married Pat, joined the U. S. Marine Corps, and resumed training with the goal of not just making the U. S. Olympic team and not just winning a medal, but winning the gold medal in the 10K. Which he did. In 1964, Billy qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in the 10, 000 meter race, where he stunned the world with a historic, come from behind victory, becoming the first and still the only American, or even the only person from the Western Hemisphere, to win the gold medal in the event. He also remains the only Native American, other than Jim Thorpe, to win a gold medal in the Olympics. His triumph is considered one of the greatest Olympic upsets and victories of all time. Since Billy's victory in the 1964 Tokyo Games, Billy and Pat have dedicated their lives to giving back, co founding Running Strong for American Indian Youth, an organization that empowers Indigenous communities through health, education, and self sufficiency programs. Their journey is one of perseverance, cultural pride, and spreading a message of unity through diversity. All values that are very much at the heart of the Charity Miles community. Which naturally, is why we want to also thank our partners at Brooks Running who are very much champions for these values as well. For over a century, Brooks has been propelled by a never-ending curiosity with how humans move. It drives their every decision and every innovation. Because they believe movement is the key to feeling more alive. And we're all moving towards something. It could be the top of a mountain, a first-ever 5K, peace of mind after a stressful day, or an Olympic gold medal. It could be a cure for Parkinson's, a cleaner planet, fair play, or the strength that comes from our diversity. So… let's run there. With gear and experiences specifically designed to take you to that place. Whether it's a headspace, a feeling, or a finish line. Let's run there. Head to BrooksRunning.com to learn more. D-Day, June 6th, 1944 was a Tuesday. Ordinarily on Tuesday evenings NBC had a comedy lineup that rivaled the greatest in history. A main part of it was the man you just heard, Jim Jordan, who starred on Fibber McGee and Molly. The normal Fibber McGee and Molly show was canceled on D-Day. Instead, they presented a special musical program at 9:30PM featuring Billy Mills and the King's Men, leaving room for late-breaking news bulletins. Opposite, CBS presented the first in a new series, The Doctor Fights, starring Raymond Massey in a new portrait each week of a doctor on some far-flung battlefield. The purpose of The Doctor Fights was two-fold: to honor the nation's one-hundred eighty-thousand doctors, one-third of whom were in the theaters of battle, and to acquaint the public with penicillin. The sponsor, Schenley Laboratories, was one of twenty-two companies making penicillin, and often the stories described wondrous cures resulting from its use by doctors in distant and primitive outposts. Many listeners at that time had never heard of the drug.

2 + Hours dedicated to the 80th anniversary of D-Day, June 6, 1944First a look at this day in History. Then early morning audio as the news broke from Europe, all unconfirmed, until a short wave broadcast from the Allied Expeditionary Force headquarters broadcast via short wave from London confirmed the Allied Invasion had begun. Next, commentator HV Kaltenborn at 11am Eastern War Time with commentary and analysis on the first hours of the allied invasion of Europe., followed by A Poem and Prayer For An Invading Army. Ronald Colman reads the poem by Edna St. Vincent Millay. The first reading of the poem the poetess wrote for D-Day.Then a very subdued Fibber McGee and Molly with a program of Patriotic Music by Billy Mills orchestra and the Kings Men. Followed by abbreviated shows from Bob Hope and Red Skelton. Bob's last show of the season was, I'm sure, not what they planned. And Red Skelton was to have had a farewell show, as he was heading off for military service. Sadly, the show gets cut off for time. Then a prayer given by President Franklin Roosevelt for the invading troops. That is followed by President Reagan's address from the D-Day beach-head at Normandy, France. The broadcast originates from the American cemetery on Omaha Beach on the fortieth anniversary of D-Day on June 6, 1984, 40 years ago today. Finally Superman, originally broadcast June 6, 1941, 83 years ago, Mr Deutch and the Radium Mine. Clark Kent and Jimmy Olsen are seen watching Dr. Deutch's radium mine. At the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, little-known American runner Billy Mills achieved what many believe to have been the greatest upset in Olympic running history. He defeated world-record-holder Ron Clarke and a global field in the 10,000-meter final. To this day, Mills is the only American to have won Olympic Gold at the classic 25-lap distance. You can watch his famous last-lap sprint here on YouTube. It's less well known that Mills also qualified for and ran the Olympic Marathon in 1964. He doesn't clearly remember the latter stages of that race, as he nearly blacked out from hypoglycemia. But he finished 14th in 2:22:54. In this podcast, Mills talks about: # Growing up on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation as a member of the Oglala Lakota people # Attending Kansas University, where he began to dream of Olympic success # Joining the U.S. Marines after college # Where he got the courage and confidence to challenge Ron Clarke in the Olympic 10,000 meter race # A final 200-meter speed session 4 days before the 10,000, where he clocked 23.3 from a standing start# The true meaning of an Olympic championship # His family's plans to attend their 14th Olympics this summer in Paris Where To Find “Running: State of the Sport” Use your smartphone to download podcast apps from Apple, Spotify, Audible, Pandora, or YouTube Podcasts. As we sat with Olympic gold medalist Billy Mills, his tales of perseverance against adversity struck a chord, reminding us of the power of belief and the human spirit's resilience. This episode takes you through Billy's journey from a boy facing prejudice and personal health battles to the glorious moment where he clinched the gold at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. His story, immortalized in the film "Running Brave," isn't just an athletic feat; it's a beacon for challenging prejudice and embracing inclusivity, which resonates deeply in today's world. The adversity Billy experienced is a stark reflection of the historical and systemic challenges that still impact indigenous communities. Our discussion spans from the Doctrine of Discovery's role in the subjugation of native peoples to the contemporary struggles against land theft and racial injustice. Billy's race wasn't solely for the gold—it was a sprint for identity, a marathon for democracy, and a relay for diversity, all of which continue to shape the legacy he builds beyond the track. Join us as we explore how sharing these stories can educate and inspire action towards a more just society.Beyond the race, Billy's life has been one of giving back. In this episode, he shares the inception of Running Strong for American Indian Youth, an organization dedicated to supporting indigenous communities. We also celebrate the shared respect and friendships fostered through sports, highlighted by Billy's bond with his fellow competitor Muhammad. From the lighter moments of discovering new fruits to planning for summer events and birthdays, this conversation with Billy Mills is an uplifting blend of victory, unity, and the pursuit of a life lived with purpose and intention.Send us a Text Message.Support the Show.Let Registered Dietitian Carissa Galloway lead you through a science-backed plan to transform the way you think about your diet.Visit www.GallowayCourse.com and use the code PODCAST at checkout for a great discount!Become a 321 Go! I saw the banner in a front yard in Bay Minette, Alabama, so we stopped. The sign on the front door read to go to the back door, so I walked around the back of the house. A lady came to the door and I asked if there had been a parade or if Mr. Billy lived there. She said he lived there and I asked if I would be able to talk with him. The lady went back inside and a couple of minutes later, Mr. Billy came outside. Mr. Billy, last name “Mills,” said he turned 100 on May 30th. For his birthday, Mr. Billy said there was a celebration with a “bunch of old people” in downtown and he shook a lot of hands. Born in Tuscaloosa, his dad owned a lumber yard in Moundville. Mr. Billy began flying at 14 years old and tells me that at one time was the youngest flight instructor in the country at just 16 years old serving in the Air Force during WWII. He was an instructor in various places around the country. After the war, Mr. Billy went back to working with his dad in the lumber yard. Oddly enough, I actually did not mean to end up in Bay Minette, but I never would've seen the banner or met Mr. Billy Mills, so it was well worth it. Sponsor: BamaEstatePlanning.com
Billy Mills has mixed emotions when it comes to Lawrence and returning to KU. In his words, it's where he never had a great race as a long-distance runner. And like most campuses across America at the time, he would experience racism for his Native American heritage. Despite all the obstacles in Mills path, he never let it deter him. Leaning on his faith and those close to him, Mills would overcome to achieve the ultimate prize. He happened to look down at what his counselor had jotted down on a piece of paper in his school file. He couldn't help but take a peek. What did it say? The 3 words could've set his destiny in stone forever. “Not college material.” The phrase sank into his mind, solidifying what his future may entail – anything but college, he concluded, based on his counselor's findings. After all, a counselor would know, right? So how did this “not college material” Muscogee man end up achieving his master's degree, followed by his Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis, working for the Muscogee Nation as Secretary of Education, getting published in articles on Indian education, becoming Tribal Assembly President, and Educational Counselor appointed by the Governor and working on the executive board for the Johnson O'Malley Program? Oh, and not to mention, also serving our country in the Navy too! My guest in today's episode is Dr. Wayne Johnson, and despite his hard work and success, he and I humbly said to me, “None of that compares to when I was a teacher.” God bless you, Wayne! In this episode, you'll hear about: • The precious words of Wayne's mother detailing how she was taken from her family and sent to Chilocco Indian School • How Wayne and his siblings were taken to a children's home • His powerful experience at Haskell Indian College • How his parents believed in and influenced their sons' futures • His work at Riverside Indian School, Haskell Indian School, Pine Ridge Reservation, Flandreau Indian School and Rosebud Reservation • Pine Ridge Reservation and the events that occurred there, such as Wounded Knee Massacre and more • His friendship with Oglala Lakota, Tamakoce Te'Hila, (known as Billy Mills), 1964 Olympic gold medal champion, and how no one was expecting an American Indian to show up and win I hope you'll take inspiration from Wayne's story (and Billy Mills' too) and feel empowered to do what you're meant to do in life, despite what someone may have said to or thought of you. The world is your oyster, my friends so release those chains of others' opinions and go seize the day! Native ChocTalk Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/nativechoctalkpodcast
