He talks about these experiences, one of which was his father dying, and in his eyes due to lack of care and understanding through our medical system. This led him to rely on substances to function. The most inspiring thing about this interview is exactly what he did to get away from these substances and even more so, creating the Honeybadger project. Blood Flow Restriction Training has attracted an increasing amount of attention in the last decade in the US. However, work has focused on rehabilitation from musculo-skeletal injuries and improvement in strength and fitness for Olympic and Professional athletes. It is recognized that regular exercise and good nutritional practice are the “medicines” for health and fitness. We can take the lessons from Olympians and incorporate them into our busy lives. We know that regular exercise mitigates the effects of many chronic diseases, but to do so, requires “doses” of exercise that many find impossible to do on a regular basis. Alas, there are a million reasons why we don't incorporate regular exercise into our busy lives. Honor U We all have dreams and imaginations. It's part of the human experience. We often associate dreams with fantasy and not often reality. But we can bring our dreams to life. If we shut down our dreams, we shut down who we are and what we have to give back to the world. So why do we let our dreams wash away? Why do we not take the limited amount of time on this planet and push towards what speaks to us internally? What stops us? We do. Every single one of us is guilty of this. The problem I ran into is I was not doing things that fully aligned with me. I would start a project with excitement, then I just quit. I was constantly focused on things I was good at, but not what drove me. The act of starting and stopping kept me feeling stuck and unsure of who I was, and even more so clouded my own self image. It's amazing how we let the external world dictate our decisions. We get so caught up in the worry of what others think, what others will say. The truth is, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks or says. It really means nothing. No one will ever know or understand our own experience. That is why it is crucial that no matter what you do in life, you honor U.I define honoring U by firstly taking a look at what matters to U. What do you love to do? You love to write? You love to go fishing? You love to paint? Whatever it is, make it part of your life. Getting away from who we are and what we love can be easy when we are taught to follow the herd. Do not dim your light. Shine that light brighter than ever. Pull over for a second and look at your roadmap. If you have felt lost or like you took a wrong turn, you don't need to turn around, because that is the past. You can take a look back to see what worked, but ultimately you need to focus on the now and what drives U because if you don't, that piece of you will always be lost. How do you know what drives you? Write about it. Think about your common things in life. What comes up a lot? What do you often think about? What makes you smile inside and outside? What gives you natural energy? What adds value to your life? If we do not honor ourselves, no one else will be able to share in what we have to offer to this world and we all have something to give. Today's guest is Anna Sweeney. Anna has been a registered dietitian, dealing exclusively with eating disorders for the past 13 years. When she was 15, Anna was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis or abbreviated commonly as MS. So we talk about her fitness journey, which I loved seeing. Multiple sclerosis is an illness of the central nervous system and it can affect the brain, spinal cord and the optic nerve. So her training was extremely detailed, and I met Anna, through her trainer, who is my buddy, Mr. Frank Duffy himself, out in NYC, and online as @FrankDuffyFitness. So Anna being a client, dealing with MS and a registered dietitian, has a lot of insight into a few demographics here. She gives insight into what she learned being a client and seeing what personal training is like. I love this because we always hear from coaches, but hearing from a clients point of view is crucial. We as trainers and coaches have a duty and responsibility to take care of our clients, and we can make a huge positive impact in their lives.She didn't think what she was doing, at first, was badass. Her training looked different that other people in the gym. It had to, and then she realized just how badass she is. I used to watch her training videos when Frank posted them and I always stopped and watched, because the progression of her movements improved with each video posted, and that is badass. As a dietitian who deals with eating disorders, she has a vast knowledge of information to share and this includes in the fields of diets, diet culture, eating disorders, and body image. And she has a very interesting take on what a balanced diet is, and how we are sold to lose weight. She also has a following of 81k on Instagram and we talk about the responsibility she feels to share, as she puts it, her evolution. It is time to bust out the pens and paper. My guest today is Brian Harrington. I met Brian through the National Sports Performance Association (NSPA) at a conference in 2019 and immediately had a connection. He is an honorable man and I highly respect him. Brian has been on quite the journey venturing into school to earn his business management degree along with a minor in education and no plans of working as strength coach. NOW he owns Harrington Sports Performance which has multiple facilities in New York. I have seen how he treats his staff and how on the same page they all are. Every time I see his athletes, they are always working and doing it in synchronicity. More than a coach, Brian also works as a physical education teacher in New York City. So he wears many hats, including husband and father. This conversation with Brian revolves around accountability. His father held him accountable and did not just demand, but he also led by example. Brian holds this same standard for his children and also his athletes. Leadership is not about being in charge. Leadership is about understanding your role. You lead. You teach and you care. While we may be talking about coaching athletes, this concept is the same across the board. Just slap another title on it. Instead of athletes, it's co-workers or subordinates, or parents and children. During this time of crisis, Brian has been able to continuously pivot and adjust. I have followed him on IG and he's always doing something to promote his athletes and their movement. He never puts himself on the screen. It's always about his team and the athletes. Though when he does make an appearance, he reminds you he can throw around some heavy weight! Favorite soft tissue modalities/therapies:NMT - Neuromuscular Therapy St. John Method (addressing trigger points, imbalances, and reflex arcs in the body) ART - Active Release Therapy (Releasing scar tissue and addressing nerve entrapments to allow muscle fibers to glide better)Supple Leopard Mobility Protocols and Joint Distractions Voodoo Flossing - to increase blood flow, tissue quality, and improve how systems around joint interact and glide better Functional Movement Screen Corrective Exercises - I use these after working to improve soft tissue quality so it lasts longer Joint Mobilization Techniques - I have learned a TON from Sports Medicine in this area over the years and it's a game changer. There are structural issues and mechanical issues. You have to address both if you want lasting results. Learning simple techniques to mobilize the cervical spine, thoracic spine, shoulder, lower back, hips, and ankles will help change global movement in the body. Everything is connected! Trigger Point Therapy - with LaCrosse Ball, Softball, or Body TemperingHyper Volt - percussion therapy to increase blood flow (works wonders after any dry needling or deeper work to tissue) Dry Needling - I cannot do this yet but I'm a big fan!Philosophy on soft tissue - use a hybrid blend of modalities and approaches because everyone reacts and responds differently to each stimulus. Also, there are a multitude of factors that go into each issue whether it's acute or chronic. Sometimes small doses if applied properly have profound results in improvements.
