This episode is an interview with Dan Wirth and Jonathan Thompson about the use and practical application of Blood Flow Restriction technology, and specifically the value of the B-Strong system.  Dan is currently the Director of Olympic sports performance at the University of Tennessee. He has been in the world of human performance for 35+ years as both a team and organization strength and conditioning coach, and also as an entrepreneur. Dan left the University of Arizona in 2000 where he had served as Lead S+C for ten years to build his performance facility Sierra Fitness Performance Training in Tucson.  He was introduced to Blood Flow Restriction training with early technologies and experimental applications during his career. He then became a big advocate of the modality and uses it regularly in daily training. Dan further recommended we bring S+C Coach Jonathan Thompson, a former intern of Dan's, on the show. Jonathan is using BFR regularly with his basketball players at Lipscomb University where he has been since 2022. In this session, we try to bring the wisdom and experience of Dan with the exuberance and application of Jonathan and another colleague together to paint a picture of the value of this training modality.  I hope you enjoy the ride.If you're listening to this podcast before January 31, 2024, you can use the coupon code BFRstrength to get 20% off the price of a B-Strong kit by going to www.bstrong.training and applying the code.If you liked this EP, please take the time to rate and comment, share with a friend, and connect with us on social channels IG @Kingopain, TW @BuiltbyScott, LI+FB Scott Livingston. He has his Masters of Science from the University of Texas at Austin, where he conducted several studies centered around BFR as it relates to the cardiovascular system. He is now a Ph.D. Candidate at UT Austin, where he works with aging populations as his dissertation work focuses on the vascular responses to hypoxia in older adults. Sten is also a BFR Master Trainer and works at ROI Performance Center, where he prescribes BFR protocols and methodologies for clients of all ages and lifestyles. Sten has also applied BFR in his work with Olympians and elite military personnel. In this episode, they talk about what Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) is all about, how it affects circulation, and how to implement BFR for recovery from an injury and for cognitive and physical benefits and longevity. Do you wish to know how to combine BFR with exercise and other activities? Listen to find out more.  Listen to this episode to learn about making 100 the new 30, and living beyond 120!    Dr. Gladden forewarns that the BFR conversation is a very fascinating one. (1:28)  Sten talks about his background story and how his father taught them some of the things he practices today in exercise physiology. (3:00)  Dr. Gladden throws light on Kaatsu as similar to tying a tourniquet on your leg while exercising or applying pressure to restrict blood flow. (4:06)  Dr. Gladden explains what ‘ischemic' is and that it means not having blood flow to an area. (6:00)  Sten gives an example of intermittent blood flow restriction and its effect. (8:35)  Dr. Gladden references Vasper and Peter Wasowski's work. (10:55)  Dr. Gladden asks Sten if low-oxygen concentration breathing has an effect on those with coronary disease. (14:05)  Dr. Gladden asks Sten if he can measure tissue saturation when putting the B-Strong Bands on. (17:50)  Steve mentions that Dr. Gladden carries the B-Strong Bands when he travels. (20:55)  Dr. Gladden speaks about how the B-Strong Bands are helping in his work. (22:51)  Dr. Gladden asks Sten if he has tried the ARX. (24:44)  Sten says the size of band is determined by the limb girth. (27:14)  Sten refers to how mercury gives elasticity to the bands. (29:57)  Sten clarifies about using the bands with other devices. (31:55)  Dr. Gladden asks Sten to talk about cardiovascular health. (34:09)  Sten notes that cardiovascular issues are still the number one killer. (36:14)  Sten refers to his interest in vascular health and aging. (38:30)  Steve wants to know how long he can have the band on. (40:00)  Sten says that there may be benefits to the bands aerobically as well. (43:02)  Dr. Gladden points out that molecular hydrogen is an excellent way to balance oxidative stress. Blood Flow Restriction Training has attracted an increasing amount of attention in the last decade in the US. However, work has focused on rehabilitation from musculo-skeletal injuries and improvement in strength and fitness for Olympic and Professional athletes. It is recognized that regular exercise and good nutritional practice are the “medicines” for health and fitness. We can take the lessons from Olympians and incorporate them into our busy lives. We know that regular exercise mitigates the effects of many chronic diseases, but to do so, requires “doses” of exercise that many find impossible to do on a regular basis. Alas, there are a million reasons why we don't incorporate regular exercise into our busy lives. BFR Training is well suited to providing “doable”, safe and effective, robust exercise in a short period of time (15 to 20 minutes), anywhere, anytime for all age groups. Regular BFR Training, with safe and effective equipment and protocols, is the solution for many of the chronic health problems of the nation. Leading BFR expert, Jim Stray-Gundersen, MD calls BFR “anti-aging” medicine. Over the past decade, Jim Stray-Gundersen, MD, has helped pioneer the use of, define the mechanisms of, and implement blood flow restriction training in the US and Europe. Stray-Gundersen saw first hand, the impact of the BFR Modality on the Olympians and the normal population he was training, for increasing power, strength, healing and recovery, improving bone density, improving lean body mass and a number of additional intricate physiologic improvements. Stray-Gundersen has done thousands of applications of BFR on various populations and is considered the leading medical doctor expert on BFR. He is co-founder and co-developer of B Strong Blood Flow Restriction Training Systems - a comprehensive BFR prodcut and training platform, that is based on Stray-Gundersen's background and knowledge, designed for safety and efficacy for all populations to use to benefit from BFR mechanisms. Stray-Gundersen lectures and teaches/certifies Blood Flow Restriction Training Theory and Application to Physical Therapists, Medical Doctors, Chiropractors, Personal Trainers, Occupational Therapists, Professional Strength and Conditioning Coaches, members of the military and Special Forces, as well as the consumer. Stray-Gundersen has also dedicated his career to anti-doping, being the first to do invasive blood testing at the World Championships in Lahti, Finland, in 1989. He has worked with WADA, USADA and has developed the anti doping test called SAFE - SAFE and Fair Events iimplemented in 2002 Olympic Games, considered by some the most aggressive test to detect and deter doping in sport. Stray-Gundersen has served on international medical committees that include the International Olympic Committee, FIFA, International Biathlon Committee, International Ski Federation, the International Skating Union, and the International Cycling Federation Stray-Gundersen. He works with Special Forces, Marines, Army, Navy SEALs and currently serves as the sports science advisor for the US Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA), and is the founder of the SG Performance Medicine Center in Park City, Utah.  B-Strong BFR Training Systems20% off at checkout with code: COACHU20 Coach U's InformationCoach U PodcastGolf Mobility AcademyBrand UCatch me on Instagram

All About Fitness

Muscles generate force to move the body and when used repeatedly, they can increase both size and force output (strength). It's generally accepted that resistance training is the most effective way to enhance size and improve strength, however there is an ongoing quest to find ways to speed up the process. It sounds dangerous and counter-intuitive but the practice of restricting blood flow out of working muscles while exercising with light weights has been shown to be extremely beneficial for promoting muscle growth. Dr. Jeremy Loenneke is an Associate Professor of Exercise Science at the University of Mississippi who studies muscle fiber physiology. As one of the leading researchers on the topic of blood flow restriction, Dr. Loenneke has conducted a number of studies on how blood flow restriction stimulates muscle growth; we discuss his findings and he offers his insights into how BFR can be implemented into your workout programs. On this episode of All About Fitness, it's all about the science of how blood flow restriction causes muscle growth. Jim Stray-Gundersen, MD is a world-renowned expert in Sports Medicine, Exercise Physiology and Training for Sport Performance. Drawing from his lifetime of experience with elite level athletes and clinical populations, Jim developed and co-founded the B Strong Training System using Blood Flow Restriction (BFR). The system works by applying cuffs to the arms and legs to temporarily restrict venous return without occluding arterial inflow. Put simply, blood flow restriction prompts an outsize response from the brain to speed up the normal process of repairing and rebuilding damaged tissue with lighter weight and a reduced risk of injury compared to traditional weight lifting. Jim predicts the B Strong Training System will change how the world gains the benefits of exercise, improving longevity and quality of life. On this podcast, Jim discusses the important difference between the B Strong system and other BFR devices on the market, and answers questions about application and safety when training with blood flow restriction. He talks about how athletes and like-minded people are using BFR and shares some common user errors and ways to avoid them. Jim also describes his new professional training course available to anyone interested in learning more about the theory and application of BFR. Bethenny Frankel is the Founder & CEO of Skinnygirl, a lifestyle brand offering practical solutions to everyday problems, which has grown from sensible, low-calorie cocktails into a branding empire that including clothing, vitamins, skincare and more. In addition to her long-standing role on Bravo’s Real Housewives of New York, Bethenny has been a guest shark on ABC's critically-acclaimed series Shark Tank, and runner-up in The Apprentice: Martha Stewart in 2005. Today, Bethenny is focused on raising her young daughter and establishing her worldwide disaster relief initiative bstrong. This program provides much-needed real-time relief to disaster-stricken areas across the United States and beyond. While assessing and delivering supplies to the Australian bushfire crisis, her team has continued their support in Puerto Rico, which has been named one of the largest privately-run humanitarian efforts in US history. Bethenny shares how she balances motherhood, her Skinnygirl empire, the critical impact her philanthropy is providing worldwide and will ignite the question, "what more can I do?" SHOW NOTES: Always a survivor: Bethenny's turbulent childhood taught her life-long lessons of dedication and determination. "Coming in second place doesn't count. Ironically, I came in second on The Apprentice: Martha Stewart and it was the best thing." "Win. Don't complain or explain." Playing chess > grand plans: Bethenny notes she looks at her business + professional life as a game of chess rather than having one grand plan. Bethenny went from being a participant of Mark Burnett's The Apprentice to recently partnering with him + MGM Television on producing female-centric programs. Naively, Bethenny hoped in winning The Apprentice she'd democratize health the way Martha Stewart democratized style. Bethenny was cast as the oddball character on Real Housewives of New York, and she committed to being vulnerable and her authentic self, focusing on the opportunity it provided to launch her Skinnygirl empire. bstrong: Bethenny directly oversees her worldwide philanthropic initiative that provides real-time emergency assistance to individuals and their families after impacted by disaster with much-needed gift cards, bank cards and critical supplies. "What’s better? Pick up a broom and help clean up a mess or complain and look at the mess?" "You’re pretty blessed if the people you love are alive." Throughout the years, we hear about the latest innovations in fitness that claim to change the way we’re going to workout forever. Although most of these trends don’t really catch on, there is always one that manages to break through and get identified as a game changer. Well, the buzz right now is about “blood flow restriction training.” It is one of the newest training tools to hit both the rehab and sports performance worlds and it’s also being recognized as a potent tool for all of us aging baby boomers. There’s a lot of research that supports it, which is why Blood Flow Restriction or BFR is becoming more popular with athletes, physical therapists, trainers, and even celebrities like Mark Wahlberg.    While the idea has been around for decades, it’s only now that we’re seeing it becoming more mainstream...and largely because of our next guest, Dr. Jim Stray-Gundersen. Jim runs the SG Performance Medicine Center. He is also the chief medical officer of B STRONG, a Utah based company he co-founded in an effort to make blood flow restriction training safe, effective, and affordable for the general public.  For more from Kathy, visit www.kathysmith.com/podcast.

Blood-flow-restriction training is a topic of growing interest. But as IHMC director and STEM-Talk co-host Dr. Ken Ford points out, there’s also a great deal of misinformation about the training. Episode 34 of STEM-Talk addresses some of that misinformation with our interview of Dr. Jim Stray-Gundersen, who helped pioneer blood flow restriction training and leads the Live Hi/Train Low program for the US Athletic Trust. Since receiving his board certification in general surgery in 1985, Jim has focused his work and research on maximizing human performance, health and resilience. He pioneered the Hi-Low training protocol and played a key role in the development of the anti-doping test, SAFE, which stands for Safe And Fair Events. It is considered the most aggressive blood-profiling test in the fight against doping. He has worked with numerous Olympians in various sports and has an ongoing relationship with world renowned long-distance runner Alberto Salazar, who also is a coach and director of the NIKE Oregon Project. Jeff has been an official physician and consultant of the United States, Norwegian and Canadian Olympic teams. He is an official member of 15 world championships. Jim completed post-doctoral fellowships in cardiovascular physiology and human nutrition at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. He received appointments as an associate professor of orthopedic surgery and physiology. He spent 20 years on the faculty of UTSW and helped build and direct two human-performance centers at St. Paul and Baylor University hospitals. He has served on international medical committees that include the International Olympic Committee, FIFA, International Biathlon Committee, International Ski Federation and the International Skating Union. Jim also is the sports science advisor for the US Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA), and continues to lead human performance and altitude camps for Olympic athletes, masters athletes, as well as Navy SEALs. He runs The SG Performance Medicine Center and Sport Technologies for Maximal Athletic Performance, overall fitness, weight loss, and recovery in Frisco, Texas, and now the new center in Park City, Utah, located inside The Center of Excellence USSA Building. As if that isn’t enough, he also is the chief medical officer of B STRONG (www.goBstrong.com)., a Utah -based company he co-founded in an effort to make blood flow restriction safe, effective, and affordable for the general public. B STRONG is a patent-pending exercise method based on blood-flow restriction exercise. During the interview, Jim refers to several studies and articles.
