Today With LuAnn Nigara: Hey friends—today we're getting real about a critical part of running a profitable business: qualifying leads. Because let's be honest—most of us are either letting go of clients who could have been ideal, or we're wasting precious time on ones that were never a good fit to begin with. In this episode, I'm sharing three real-world stories from my own business journey that reveal the hidden opportunities in client interactions you might be misjudging. These aren't hypotheticals—they're lessons hard-earned from decades of experience, and I want you to learn from them, not repeat them. You'll learn how to: Spot a sleeper opportunity disguised as a “tire-kicker.” Avoid the time-suck of clients who'll never convert. Reframe your qualifying mindset to one that protects revenue and positions your business for sustainable growth. This isn't about saying “no” faster—it's about saying “yes” smarter. So let's sharpen your lead-qualifying skills—because your future revenue depends on it. LuAnn Nigara's Ah-Ha Moments: “Qualifying is not about shutting the door. It's about asking the right questions so we can make an educated guess on whether we should open the door or not.” - LuAnn “I'm not going to sell you knock-off products here to save a few bucks, and now what? The home you come to for peace and recreation has broken blinds that need servicing every time you show up here?” - LuAnn “Don't you ever qualify a person, in or out, based on how they look when they walk into your store. Treat every person like your next VIP client—because they just might be.” - LuAnn A Big THANK YOU to Today's Podcast Sponsor: This episode is sponsored by Exciting Windows! Today With LuAnn Nigara: Welcome to Window Treatments for Profit! We've been diving deep into the topic of ghosting—why clients disappear and how to stop it from happening. This was supposed to be Part 3 of our four-part series, but something happened... A listener, Beatriz, wrote in with a real-life scenario that perfectly ties into our topic. She got ghosted after sending a quote, and when she looked back at her process, she realized she never set a clear pricing expectation. And she's not alone. If you've ever hesitated to talk price in the consultation because you were afraid of losing the client—only to lose them anyway—this episode is for you. I break down exactly where Beatriz lost control of the conversation and share a powerful pricing strategy that puts YOU back in charge. Listen now and learn how to stop getting ghosted after the quote! A Big THANK YOU to Today's Podcast Sponsor: This episode is sponsored by Exciting Windows! Today With LuAnn Nigara: If you've been in the window treatment business for any length of time, you've likely experienced this: you pour hours into a proposal or consultation, think you've nailed it, and then—silence. The client disappears, leaving you frustrated, confused, and wondering what went wrong. Let me assure you, ghosting isn't about your worth as a person. But it is often about how you communicate your value as a professional. The good news? This is fixable. A Big THANK YOU to Today's Podcast Sponsor: This episode is sponsored by Exciting Windows! Today With Amanda Smith: Hi, welcome to Window Treatments for Profit! In this episode, we're sitting down with Amanda Smith, a leader in the window treatment industry and co-founder of Seamless Workroom. From her start as a teacher to becoming a sought-after partner for interior designers, Amanda's story is a testament to the power of systems, efficiency, and a commitment to quality. More About Amanda Smith Like many others in this business, I did not start out as a fabricator of window treatments. I attended college at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte earning a bachelor's degree in Middle Grades Education. After teaching English and Social Studies for seven years, I attended graduate school earning a master's degree in library science at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and worked as a high school media specialist for three years until my twin boys were born in 1998. At which time I became a stay-at-home Mom. When my boys turned three, I knew I wanted to work but did not want to return to teaching full time. While visiting a friend one afternoon, I noticed she had new window treatments in her family room. It was an “ah ha” moment. I thought, “If I can make cocktail dresses, I can surely learn to make window treatments!” I come from a family that sews. My mother, an accomplished sewer and quilter, taught me the art at age 12. My father owned a successful auto upholstery business for 25 years. Both of my grandmothers and all of my aunts sewed. With my family's support, I set up a small workroom in an extra bedroom and completed my first job in July 2001. What started out as a small, retail business has grown into a full-service to the trade workroom offering fabrication of panels, valances, roman shades, bedding and decorative accessories as well as several lines of fabrics, hardware, shutters, blinds, roller shades, solar shades, and natural woven shades for those associated with the interior design industry. In July 2017 I, along with Rose Mary LeBlanc, launched a second business. Seamless Workroom is a workroom management system which helps to improve efficiency and productivity within the workroom for fabricators and designers in the industry. Today With Tina and Ashley Engdahl: In this week's episode of Window Treatments for Profit, we're excited to introduce a special series called "Bound by Business," focusing on the unique challenges and rewards of family businesses. Hosted by Jessica Harling, who grew up in a family business herself, this episode features Tina and Ashley Engdahl, a mother-daughter duo (almost!) from Apollo Draperies in Cincinnati. These in-laws both joined their husbands in the family business and have a wealth of experience to share. Throughout the episode, Tina and Ashley discuss the importance of defining core values and using the Traction system to keep everyone aligned and accountable. They discuss the challenges of communication in family businesses and share strategies for navigating heated moments with patience and understanding. The conversation also touches on the significance of setting boundaries between work and personal life and the value of continuous learning and improvement. Whether you work with your in-laws or not, this episode is packed with valuable insights for anyone in a family business. More About Tina and Ashley Engdahl My career started as a Registered Nurse in 1984 and I quickly realized I was in the wrong profession. I stuck with it until 1987 when an opportunity came up for me to work at my husband's family business, Apollo Draperies, Inc. I jumped at the opportunity and never looked back. I started as a Sales Consultant and learned everything I could about draperies, valances, bedding, pillows, table covers, blinds, shades, and shutters and loved every minute of it. It was at this same time that we purchased the business from my in-laws. It didn't take too long before I realized that neither my husband or myself knew not the 1st thing about business. My husband had a degree in Industrial Design and mine was in nursing. He ran the workroom and installations and I did the design and bookkeeping. Somehow we just kept on keeping on until 2009 when I noticed the lead book was getting more and more sparse and we were realistically going out of business. At that time I was looking through a trade magazine and an ad caught my attention and I proceeded to answer it and within minutes my phone was ringing and Steve Bursten of Exciting Windows was on the other end. He proceeded to ask me all kinds of questions that I could not answer which made me realize we would certainly go out of business unless we learned what business is and how to actually run one. We Joined Exciting Windows and learned everything we could about how to run a business. That's when I feel I started to actually grow. And I have loved every part (almost) of learning and absorbing all I can to make a difference in our future as business owners and the legacy we were making for our family. The real pain, struggles, as well as growth didn't truly start until our middle son and his wife graduated from college and wanted to be a part of the business- 10 years ago! I'd have to say that's when I began growing up . We all did. “The struggle was real”,2' as some have put it. But like most entrepreneurs, quitting was never an option! I knew enough to know we needed help and hired a business coach, Jeesic Harling and the 4 of us worked with her for 18 months. We were growing and maturing and eventually hit another plateau at which point I knew enough to know I didn't know what I didn't know and hired Madeleine MacRae to get us through another difficult stage. Now we are at a point where we have reached over $1,250,000.00 in revenue and looking forward to scaling to $2 million and then $3 million. My husband is getting ready to retire and we are working towards the 3rd generation to scale to the next levels. With a new patented design on the horizon, Robert exemplifies a commitment to continuous innovation that keeps businesses ahead of the curve. More About Robert Ikhtiari I'm Robert Ikhtiari, a true Chicagoan through and through. Born and raised in the heart of Illinois, I've spent all of my 65 years close to home. My journey into the world of window treatments began in my thirties when I landed a job at a Home Improvement and Decorating Center. It was there that I first encountered window treatments, an interest that would stick with me throughout my entire career. Over the years, I've worn many hats in the industry – from selling and installing to repairing and eventually venturing into entrepreneurship with my own window treatment business. But the real highlight of my career came when my wife and I developed Sleepy Time Tracks, a revolutionary solution designed to block out pesky light that sneaks in along the sides of window treatments. Our dedication to providing top-notch products doesn't stop there. We've expanded our offerings to include a range of other products that complement Sleepy Time Tracks, all with the goal of enhancing your sleep experience. For over six years now, we've been serving customers through our own website as well as popular online platforms like Amazon, Walmart, and Etsy. Along the way, we've encountered our fair share of copycats trying to imitate our success with inferior products. But what truly sets us apart isn't just our superior product – it's the integrity, care, and compassion we pour into everything we do. At the end of the day, our mission is simple yet profound: to ensure that everyone has access to a good, restful sleep. And knowing that we're contributing to that makes me incredibly proud. Thanks for joining us on this journey toward better sleep! Connect with Robert Ikhtiari Website TikTok A Big THANK YOU to Today's Podcast Sponsor: This episode is sponsored by Exciting Windows! Today With Fawn Chang: Today on Window Treatments for Profit, I am joined by Fawn Chang, a behavioral interior designer, color expert and industry insider. She is sharing how our environments impact our well-being, how window treatments play a crucial role, and how we can position ourselves as consultants for healthier living spaces. Fawn has inspired audiences around the world — teaching how the brain and body interact with our surroundings, and today she is bringing insight on how to create spaces that don't just look beautiful, but actually enhance our health, wealth, and happiness…and how to sell them too. Pick It Apart [2:27] Fawn introduces ‘wellness real estate' and how wellness window treatments can be incorporated. [13:29] Fawn and LuAnn discuss biophilia, its positive impacts in an environment, and how window treatment professionals can capitalize on this. [19:49] LuAnn asks Fawn how to counsel consumers on circadian rhythms and the ideal room darkening window treatments. [24:31] Fawn explains how our bodies and subconscious minds are always reading and reacting to our environments, and the implications of the low-level stress they can cause. [31:02] Fawn and LuAnn discuss body language and best practices when it comes to body language and sales. [50:59] LuAnn reiterates the tools she and Fawn discussed, and shares how these can make you — the window treatment professional — more valuable to interior designers and worth a higher rate. LuAnn and Fawn Chang's Ah-Ha Moments “The outside is always moving in a fashion that is more random than what we see on the our screens, right? That calms the body that puts us into our rest, restore, digest, create, and play mode. We have access to higher order thinking in our brain. We have access to the healing aspects of our body, and then…as long as it's tracking the sunlight, our body's rhythms can train to where they're meant to be.” - Fawn Chang “[In interior design] biophilia feels very normal now, but I have never ever thought about how window treatment people should be capitalizing and leveraging it.” - LuAnn Nigara “Our body and unconscious mind is reading the environment about eight-and-a-half seconds before our thinking mind is aware…Your unconscious reads it, evaluates it, qualifies it.” - Fawn Chang “Embracing Biophilia design and wellness design and having it as another tool in our toolbox as window treatment professionals — we're going to be more important to interior designers. And…consumers will pay easily up to 20% more for products when wellness design is important to them…when it matters to that person, they will pay more.” - LuAnn Nigara “We're not trying to manipulate somebody, we're actually trying to create a connection. That's the whole basis of of sales, and all of this — talking about the neuroscience of having someone feel comfortable in their own house so that you can get to the next level of the sales conversation with them. It's looking for a genuine beginning of a relationship.” - LuAnn Nigara More About Fawn Chang With over 2500 presentations delivered to audiences internationally, Fawn inspires and shifts perceptions that change lives. She has a remarkable ability to allow her audience to see how the brain/body work and how to make simple changes for better business, better health, wealth, longevity and more profit. Fawn's passion is people and she knows that life was NEVER meant to be a struggle. Using neuroscience, she shows how the human spirit in each of us is confounded by what is in our environment, which speaks to the unconscious mind creating our behavior. Our true nature begs to be brought forth but is locked within our environments. Fawn delivers easily digestible, practical and easy-to-implement actionable tips and tools, backed by modern science, ready for immediate application enjoyable, approachable and understandable all with delightful humor. Fawn Chang is a Keynote Speaker, International Interior Designer, Color Marketing and Trending Expert and a Feng Shui Expert. A former Medical Practice Administrator and teacher, Fawn's presentations bring together neurophysiology and design with conversational style, humor and actionable takeaways. Significantly, she was the designer on a multi-state study to determine the influence of color on students' engagement with incredible results, moving students and teachers from 50% engagement to 100% engagement just with the use and designed placement of wall color. Pick It Apart [3:48] Katlyn explains why it's important to look at (and understand) your website analytics. [10:24] Katlyn emphasizes the importance of having clear Call To Action buttons. [16:43] LuAnn shares her pet peeve when it comes to websites and social media accounts. [19:47] LuAnn asks Katlyn her thoughts on how window treatment professionals can overcome photography challenges in their portfolio. [24:07] Katlyn offers a tip on what should go in your website header and footer. [32:17] LuAnn suggests that everyone should spend some time on their own website to find out how well it works for users. LuAnn and Katlyn Slocum's Ah-Ha Moments “Marketing is the things that you do to get people to your website…Sales is actually closing those marketing leads.” - Katlyn Slocum “Every single lead that you can capture is another conversation.” - Katlyn Slocum “Right when people land on your page, you have less than a 10th of a second for them to decide if they're staying on your site or not. It's so quick.” - Katlyn Slocum More About Katlyn Slocum I'm Katlyn and I'm passionate about helping professionals in the construction industry scale to new heights! Growing up, all of the men in my life were tradesmen. My papa opened his own auto shop the year I was born (that's 28 years ago). My dad and his dad ran their own HVAC business. My stepdad is a very successful and trusted roofer in southern Minnesota. I even married an electrician! I've always admired these guys and have seen firsthand how hard they work every day. But as the internet kept growing, it wasn't enough to work hard on the job; they had to market their businesses online, too. Some of my family took on the challenge—like my stepdad who continued to have enormous success in his area after investing in online advertising, a new website, and SEO. Others found it more difficult to adapt—like my grandpa who relied solely on word-of-mouth referrals and later closed his business. I know he isn't the only talented tradesman who has struggled to keep up with online marketing. That's why I decided to intentionally create a business that helps blue-collar business owners—people like my dad, my uncles, my stepdad, and my grandpa—excel online and expand their businesses through website design and marketing. I know the countless hours you invest to put food on the table and create a brighter future for your family. And while I can't do what YOU do, I DO know how to harness the power of the internet to take your business from struggling to thriving.
