The Pittsburgh Steelers are like all 32 NFL teams as it pertains to preparing for the new league year, and the NFL Scouting Combine is the start of the unofficial league year. At the Scouting Combine is also when fans get to hear from the coaches and general managers who haven't spoken in a very long time. With that said, it is the first time Omar Khan has met with media since last season. Khan spoke, but did he really say anything? Can We Say Anything Meaningful About a Venezuelan Debt Restructuring? Venezuela must restructure its debt if it, and its new "friends" in Washington DC, want the economy humming again. But how? The debt stock is enormous and the range of claims so vast that normal techniques are unlikely to work. And typically, before anything could happen, the IMF would need to go in and assess the actual situation on the ground. All this takes time. But we imagine that the folks in Washington DC want to declare their adventure a success, and soon. Is that impulse consistent with an orderly, comprehensive debt restructuring? For that matter, what would a restructuring look like if we also assume that Washington wants to line its own pockets with Venezuelan oil revenues, and perhaps to give preferential treatment to oil major creditors (to entice them back into Venezuela)? We don't have answers — but we suspect that those folks in DC don't either. Producer: Leanna Doty

Marty and Clif give Ben the movie Say Anything to watch. This week on Talking Pondo, Marty and Clif are joined by Ben from Chasing the Whimsy for a deep dive into two landmark films that helped define independent cinema: Cameron Crowe's Say Anything (1989) and Kevin Smith's Clerks (1994).On the surface, these movies couldn't be more different. One is a heartfelt, romantic coming-of-age story, the other a black-and-white, foul-mouthed retail comedy. But together, they capture the shifting cultural moment between the late '80s and early '90s, when indie filmmakers proved you didn't need studio polish to say something real. The conversation digs into Clerks as a once-in-a-lifetime debut: it's handmade feel, sharp dialogue, budget-driven creativity, and the birth of the View Askewniverse. From newspaper machines and 37 infamous confessions to Jay & Silent Bob's unlikely legacy, the crew explores why Kevin Smith's $33,000 gamble still resonates decades later. They also connect the dots between both films through music, tone, first-time directors, and a shared DNA of alternative cinema that celebrate authenticity over perfection.Support the showFind our films here: The Love Song of William H Shaw Revenge of Zoe Writing Fren-ZeeMaking Pondo on FacebookX (formerly Twitter):@MakingPondoInstagramMaking Pondo on Letterboxd:Season One Season Two Season Three Season Four Theme Song "The Rain" by Russ PacePhotos by Geoffrey Notkin

The Four Leadership Hats: Applying Behavioral Science to Leadership and Supervision — Session 321 with John Guercio

The Behavioral Observations Podcast with Matt Cicoria

In this episode, I'm joined by John Guercio for a wide-ranging and practical conversation about leadership through a behavioral lens. John and I dig into what it actually means to lead in applied behavior analysis, especially when so much of the existing leadership literature is vague, mentalistic, or disconnected from observable behavior. We start by talking about the need to operationalize leadership in behavioral terms and explore the four leadership hats developed by Dr. Paulie Gavoni: leading, training, coaching, and managing. We break down what each of these roles looks like behaviorally, how they function across time, and why effective leaders need to move flexibly between them rather than relying on a single style. A major theme of the episode is the role of positive reinforcement in leadership. John shares real-world examples from his OBM coursework and his work at Cornerstone Behavioral Services, highlighting how difficult—but necessary—it can be to shift away from punitive and avoidance-based management strategies. We discuss why punishment often "works" in the short term, why leaders continue to rely on it, and how reinforcement-based leadership creates better outcomes for both staff and organizations. We also spend time unpacking the distinction between leadership and management. John reflects on his own strengths and limitations, describing how he focuses on vision and direction while intentionally surrounding himself with strong managers who excel at systems, logistics, and follow-through. This leads to a powerful discussion about positional authority, seniority, and the myth that leadership status entitles people to treat others poorly. Throughout the episode, we return to the importance of psychological safety, consistent feedback, and emotional regulation in leadership roles. John shares practical strategies for navigating tough conversations, including how to balance empathy with accountability, how to manage staff expectations, and how to avoid letting emotion drive professional communication (including when not to send that email). We also talk through concrete tools and exercises for improving leadership practice, such as symbolic problem-solving activities to surface unspoken team issues, written acknowledgment systems, and using assessment tools like the Performance Diagnostic Checklist to guide supervision and coaching. John closes by sharing future directions for developing empirically grounded management assessment tools, along with a preview of his upcoming work and conference presentations. This is a practical, honest conversation for anyone supervising staff, leading teams, or trying to build reinforcing, values-consistent organizations in human services. You remember her from Say Anything, the iconic 80s teen movie, or from River’s Edge or Gas Food Lodging or The Rachel Papers…But while Ione was busy making some of the most era-defining films, she was also living the most aspirational 90’s life imaginable - Teenage friends with River Phoenix, teenage girlfriend to The Red Hot Chilli Peppers Anthony Keidis. Young wife of Beastie Boy Adam 'Ad Rock' Horowitz. Welcomed into Madonna’s circle, until she started dating all her female exes. Now, she’s been married to Australian musician Ben Lee for well over a decade, and lives in Sydney. But Ione isn’t defined by the men she’s married or the women she’s loved - she’s the main character of her own wild, beautiful, fearless story - and she’s written it all down in her book, Say Everything - which is a glorious, pent-up outpouring of story and gossip and validation of girlhood and womanhood and romance and sexuality and what was like to come of age in - literally - a different time. Before you think about what to do with your face, your mouth, or tongue, or breath, think about which sounds you're speech is emphasizing. Is it consonant sounds or vowel sounds? By shifting the focus to heavier vowels and weaker consonants, the end result may be speech that sounds much smoother than how you originally spoke. Let's explore!Welcome to For Word, the platform dedicated to guiding you towards better spoken performance. We're constantly looking at techniques to add more vocal variety to how we talk by incorporating more softness and firmness to our, furrowing eyebrows, smiling, raising and lowering pitches, adding pauses in order to convey frustration, sadness, joy and nervousness, and considering how to add more breath to everything we say. Let's see how these elements of contrast and body language can lead to richer expression. In this video, we're especially paying attention to our head position to see how the location we look towards immediately changes the quality of the voice we use-and how sometimes looking down might be the best option for what we need to say, and other times looking up could be the perfect fit.#performance #poetry #speaking

Actor and director Chad Lowe sits down with Steve for one of the most deeply honest, funny, and unexpectedly emotional conversations we've had on Still Here Hollywood. From growing up in the shadow of a wildly famous big brother to discovering his own path through acting, sobriety, fatherhood, and directing, Chad tells the story of a life shaped by love, rivalry, reinvention — and a few surreal Hollywood moments. He opens up about the early days when teenage girls hung posters of Rob but not him… auditioning for roles that went on to define a generation (On Golden Pond, Running on Empty, Goonies, Say Anything)… and the moment River Phoenix's performance inspired him to become a better actor. Chad shares how Martin Sheen changed the course of his life on one unforgettable car ride, how he overcame paralyzing audition anxiety, and why Life Goes On became the most meaningful work of his career. For the first time, Chad also walks us through the real story behind Hilary Swank's Oscar speech, how he actually felt in the car afterward, why he cried at the ceremony, and how the two of them found peace and perspective years later. We cover the state of Hollywood post-strikes, directing 911: Lone Star alongside Rob, taking his daughters to Taylor Swift (and surviving the ticket wars), his years of sobriety, what scares him most as a “girl dad,” and how a tuna melt changed his life at Elizabeth Taylor's house. It's heartfelt, self-deprecating, and full of moments that remind you why Chad Lowe has quietly built one of the most beloved, complicated, fascinating careers in the business. A must-watch episode for anyone who knows the highs and lows of following your own path — even when the world thinks it already knows who you are. No matter what kind of horror fan you are, there's a good chance that you love the monsters. Whether it's from the Universal Classics, Hammer's colorful reinterpretations, the amazing creatures from Ray Harryhausen, to the no-classic aliens in Star Wars, monsters are a backbone of cinema, and arguably, are the backbone of horror. It's one of the things that we horror fans rally around, and love to discuss: from our favorites, to how some are designed, how they move, and everything in between. Oscar winning special makeup effects artist Howard Berger and author Marshall Julius have a new book out entitled Making Monsters: Inside Stories from the Creators of Hollywood's Most Iconic Creatures, so we asked them to be on our show to talk all about monsters, and those special memories that we all have from the films we love. Films mentioned in this episode: 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958), The Abyss (1989), An American Werewolf in London (1981), Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), The Fly (1986), Frankenstein (1931), The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973), Gremlins (1984), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923), Indian Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), Jason and the Argonauts (1963), Jurassic Park (1993), King Kong (1933), King Kong (1976), Night of the Living Dead (1968), Nosferatu (1922), Phantom of the Opera (1925), Planet of the Apes (1968), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Say Anything (1989), Star Wars (1977), The Thing (1982), The Valley of the Gwangi (1969)

This episode delves into the cinematic exploration of the film "Say Anything," a work that has garnered both acclaim and critique over the years. We engage in a rigorous examination of the film's narrative, particularly highlighting its central theme: the juxtaposition of romantic idealism against the backdrop of familial dysfunction. Our discourse reflects a spectrum of perspectives, as we navigate the intricate dynamics between the characters portrayed by John Cusack and Ione Skye. While some of us articulate a profound disdain for the film's perceived shortcomings, others find merit in its exploration of youthful aspiration and emotional complexity. Ultimately, we endeavor to dissect the film's cultural legacy and its standing within the pantheon of 1980s cinema, inviting our listeners to reflect on their own interpretations of this iconic piece of film history.Support us:https://www.patreon.com/whatsourverdictEmail us: hosts@whatsourverdict.comFollow us:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/whatsourverdictTwitter: @whatsourverdictInstagram: @whatsourverdictYouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UC-K_E-ofs3b85BnoU4R6liAVisit us:www.whatsourverdict.com

TALK TO ME, TEXT ITWhat happens when we intentionally disconnect from the digital world? This intimate morning reflection explores the transformative power of putting down our phones and engaging with life directly. After becoming overwhelmed by online negativity and divisive discourse surrounding recent events, I made the decision to step away from social media for the weekend. What followed was a revelation in productivity and joy that many of us forget is possible in our hyper-connected lives. From quality family time at a newly discovered restaurant (The Flying Biscuit) to shopping excursions that took me slightly outside my comfort zone, the weekend became an exercise in rediscovering simple pleasures and accomplishment. The episode weaves personal experiences with broader observations about our relationship with technology and media consumption. I share book recommendations for "The Thursday Murder Club" series (far superior to the film adaptation), reveal fascinating trivia about the iconic boombox scene in "Say Anything," and discuss concerning research about Ozempic users abandoning their treatment regimens prematurely. Throughout these seemingly disparate topics runs a common thread – the value of mindfulness and presence in a world constantly competing for our attention. As we navigate increasingly complex and sometimes disturbing news cycles, including the recent incident in Utah where two men were arrested for planting an explosive device under a news van, perhaps the greatest self-care practice is knowing when to step back. Join me in exploring how periodic digital detoxes can help maintain our mental health while still staying informed about the world around us. Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell and attorney Eric Bland are back again … and the filters (as usual) are OFF.  Mandy shares the tea about what went on last week in a Columbia, South Carolina, courtroom where her attorney Meredith Bannon argued against Mandy sitting for a deposition in a case she isn't a part of (David Voros and Alexandra Stasko v. Allison Dunnavant). The case stemmed from stories Mandy wrote before the Murdaugh murders about a University of South Carolina art professor accused of sexual harassment by a number of women.  Why are there no repercussions for lawyers who take objectively bad cases that seem to have only one purpose (to harass Mandy and Allison)? Why is it OK for Mandy to be deposed when one of the plaintiffs in the bad case has plainly and publicly stated that she wants to ruin and destroy Mandy's credibility (and life)?  Also on the show, what the heck happened at University of South Carolina on Sunday with the false alarm over an active shooter? And why did the school encourage people to “defend themselves against the shooter”? Plus Eric Bland has mad beef with Congresswoman Nancy Mace who — as it turns out — is allowed to SAY ANYTHING about ANYONE, as long as it's on the House floor. She — and other House members — have ABSOLUTE immunity from defamation cases stemming for what they've said in that forum according to Judge Gergel, which seems, very dangerous in this day and age. ☕ Cups Up! ⚖️ Episode References Mandy in Jamaica with - kobe_1_love_tours on Instagram
