Kindness, Compassion, Joy, and Equanimity. In some traditions these four qualities are known as the "Abodes of The Heart." But what does it mean to "abide in kindness or compassion? Joy or Equanimity? Please join meditation teacher Chris Luard in an upcoming talk: The Four Abodes of The Heart.
Here I offer a guided meditation through the body, feeling tones, and mind/heart, as presented by Ven. Bhikkhu Analayo. In this practice we explore our experience of our body through the skin, flesh, bones, and the elemental qualities of the body: Earth, Water, Fire, and Air. We are then invited into the feeling tones inherent in the human experience. Then we rest deeply in the body and from that deep state of bodily rest, we observe the activity of the mind and heart. In this observation we might notice the mind and heart naturally begin to rest. By observing in a non-judgemental was we might come to notice how the contact in the body leads to a feeling tone which leads to thoughts, emotions, and moods, these thoughts and moods we can see lead into the hindrances. Our exploration continues by observing the absence of the hindrances giving rise to joy and the other awakening factors. With practice, this practice can lead one to a deeper sense of present moment awareness, and to recognize the not-self aspect of our physicality. Meditation can be challenging at times. Occasionally we may experience things which surprise as a result. If you have any questions or concerns in regards to this, or other meditation practices, please feel free to message me through my website: www.suchsweetthunder.org
The divine abodes, also known as the Brahma Vihāras in Sanskrit, are four supreme emotions or mental states that are emphasized because of the Buddha's teaching that "whatever one frequently ponders on, that will become the inclination of their mind." In this talk, Walt Opie examines these four and offers the "near and far enemy" of each one. The commentaries on the Brahma Viharas explain that each of the four qualities has two "enemies." The far enemy represents the opposite mental state, which can pose a challenge to our practice. However, the near enemy, while appearing similar enough to be mistaken for the desired quality, is an imposter that is ultimately detrimental. These are:1. Metta (Loving-kindness)Near Enemy: Sentimentality (a superficial or insincere affection).Far Enemy: Hatred or ill will.2. Karuna (Compassion)Near Enemy: Pity (a condescending form of compassion).Far Enemy: Cruelty or indifference.3. Mudita (Sympathetic joy)Near Enemy: Comparison (feeling joy only when others are less successful).Far Enemy: Jealousy or envy.4. Upekkha (Equanimity)Near Enemy: Indifference (a lack of care or engagement).Far Enemy: Attachment or aversion.Walt also recounts the impact of loving-kindness practice on inmates in his prison outreach program and describes Metta as a good antidote to ill will and anger. He concludes by offering stories of loving-kindness as examples. ______________Walt Opie was introduced to insight meditation in 1993 at Spirit Rock and attended his first residential retreat there in 2005. He is a graduate of both the Spirit Rock Community Dharma Leaders' (CDL4) program and the Sati Center Buddhist Chaplaincy program. Ajahn Dhammasiha points out the benefits of developing all four 'Brahmavihāras': 1. Mettā = Loving Kindness 2. Karuṇā = Compassion 3. Muditā = Sympathetic Joy 4. Upekkhā = Equanimity Developed togther, these four 'Appamañña-Vihāras' (= Limitless/Boundless/Infinite Abidings) support each other and provide many synergies. Ajahn explains which of the 4 to use depending on either the external situation, or depending on the internal defilements that we wish to counter. In this week's talk, MOI teacher Mark Wiesman leads us in a guided meditation through the Four Divine Abodes: loving-kindness, compassion, appreciative joy, and equanimity. Mark tells us that we can go to these four places anytime we need. They are tools that can help us cultivate more openness and expansiveness in our hearts and minds, which by nature leads to more calm and peace in our lives. Sometimes in real estate, less is more, and as the saying goes—quality over quantity. You don't need a portfolio with 100+ properties if you have a strong cash flow from five. This approach allows less to fall through the cracks and a more personalized experience for the tenant while still building wealth like never before. Today's guest, Kelly Cronin, explains how she has created Cronin Castles, a variety of unique experiences in various locations, and is now profiting off people's desire to experience more life. Her current portfolio includes a sea house in Puerto Rico, an off-the-grid dome in Alaska, a tiny home in Utah, and eighty acres in Wisconsin. While Kelly was merely setting her price on listing sites and looking for interesting places, she stumbled on the next big thing. Currently, short-term rental sites are looking for more properties with unique experiences, like Kelly's, to feature and further differentiate themselves from the competition.Kelly was able to start investing because she saved half of her income. She was able to save an astonishing $110,000 not because of a high salary—in fact, she never hit the six-figure mark—but because she gamified her life. Kelly did this by finding ways to lower her mortgage, save on childcare expenses and use credit card points to cover her travel expenses. Now Kelly can give people the traveling experiences she would want while simultaneously building wealth and changing her financial future. In This Episode We CoverHow to research and invest in different markets Cultivating unique experiences and how to market your rentals Managing your rental property remotely and the importance of building a network in the market you choose to invest inSaving fifty percent of your income and how to gamify your life and stretch your money Self-managing your properties and how to stay on top of your rental portfolioAnd So Much More!Links from the ShowAshley's InstagramTony's InstagramReal Estate Rookie Facebook GroupBiggerPockets ForumsBrandon Turner's InstagramNate Robbins' InstagramBrian Murray's InstagramAirbnbVrboRealtor.comAirDNAZillowDerek Diedricksen's InstagramBoostlyGodaddyHostfullyMeta Business Suite96 Units in 5 Years By Combining Long & Short-Term RentalsConnect with Kelly:Kelly's WebsiteKelly's Facebook PageKelly's InstagramCheck out the full show notes here: https://biggerpockets.com/blog/rookie-205Interested in learning more about today's sponsors or becoming a BiggerPockets partner yourself? As Elis sat down to present this week's slightly shorter show he turned to his right to see an empty chair. It's the place where John Robins would usually sit himself down to broadcast to the nation, but today he was nowhere to be seen. Thankfully, all Elis had to do was turn his head 30 degrees to the left to look at his computer screen to see Johnny JR staring right back at him, ready to battle through 60 minutes of top quality radio. Yes, due to factors John was unable to be in the studio with Elis and Producer Dave for the show today; but thanks to the power of technology (and sheer will power) he was still able to join in the fun from home. The guys play a makeshift Made Up Game, a football-based law is debated in Petty Parliament, and Dave answers the call of duty… by sharing his emergency scripted intro.

Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast. Role models play an important part in all of our lives, whether we seek them out or not. And whether we walk the Buddhist Path or not, they can have the power to shape the direction we take and the ability to influence the decisions that follow on from there. For Buddhist practitioners, the Buddha is our most eminent role model, teacher and the Perfectly Enlightened One. And there are also many noble and great disciples of the Buddha. Today we will delve into the story of Ghatikara, the Potter, a lay disciple, who was the chief attendant and supporter of Kassapa Buddha and a good friend of the bodhisatta, Jotipala, who we know as Gotama Buddha. He has a significant role in the time of Kassapa Buddha and also Gotama Buddha. There are some very inspiring stories of Ghatikara told by Kassapa Buddha and we also have the more recent story of Ghatikara as a noble being dwelling in the Pure Abodes. He realised path and fruit of non-return during the time of Kassapa Buddha, and we meet him in the time of Gotama Buddha, when he pays a visit to inform the Buddha of several bhikkhus who were reborn in the Aviha realm of the Pure Abodes. We can learn much from the example of Ghatikara, who lived an exceedingly upright householder life with outstanding noble qualities of a good person. The primary suttas referred to in this Dhamma talk: – Ghaṭikāra Sutta (MN 81) – Ghaṭikārapañha (Mil 5.5.7) – Ghaṭīkārasutta (SN 1.50), (SN 2.24) In learning about such noble beings, we can delight in their lives and accomplishments; recognise the importance of seeing them as worthy role models; and use it as inspiration towards progress on the Buddha's Noble Eightfold Path. Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast. Another session to accompany the third module in the Youth Dhamma Gradual Teachings series looking into Buddha's Gradual Instructions to Lay People on the HEAVENLY REALMS (saggakathaṁ). In this session, we do a GUIDED MEDITATION together - RECOLLECTING THE NOBLE BEINGS IN THE PURE ABODES (suddhāvāsa). We recollect their conviction, virtuous behaviour, learning, generosity and wisdom to be reborn in the highest of the heavenly realms. We bring to mind the noble beings we have heard of from the Buddha's teachings, and we deepen the meditation by recollecting they have attained path and fruit of non-return and path and fruit of arahantship and developed noble qualities. This meditation is particularly helpful: - when we feel low in mind energy - when the conditions appear challenging - when we feel we need protection and safety - when we need to study or sit for exams - when we want to improve our memory and retention - when we need to face challenges at work, home and in the community - when we want to learn, practise and understand Buddha Dhamma **It will help lift the mind, brighten it, make it happy and safe - so the mind can concentrate more easily, focus, and retain what's needed to be retained.** We can apply this meditation as we go about our daily lives and in all postures (sitting, walking, standing, wakefully lying down) If you have any questions or comments regarding this talk, please email them to suttameditationseries[at]gmail.com or leave a voicemail message via anchor.fm A VIDEO of this GUIDED MEDITATION has been published to the Sutta Meditation Series YouTube Channel - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqlcplcYFEQ AND on Spotify as a video podcast Blessings of the Triple Gem. Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast. Another session to answer a question on DETAILS OF THE HEAVENLY REALMS, in regards to the Buddha's Gradual Instructions to Lay People on the HEAVENLY REALMS (saggakathaṁ). This session is specifically on NON-RETURNERS & THE PURE ABODES, as we complete our review of the heavenly realms of form (rūpa-loka). The noble beings that dwell in the Pure Abodes are non-returners and arahants and they are considered the most superior beings in the world. This session explores what we know about these realms from the suttas. Our minds are lifted and brightened when we think about these great and wise noble beings. In this session, we examine: — the five realms that comprise the Pure Abodes — Buddha's visit to the Pure Abodes, noting that he mentions he has never previously been born into these realms — the abilities of the noble beings dwelling in the Pure Abodes and the important role they play, the knowledge and wisdom they are endowed with and the types of activities in the Pure Abodes — what is means to be a non-returner and they types of non-returners — examples of lay people, monks and nuns who were reborn in the Pure Abodes, including Hatthaka of Alavi, Venerable Pukkasati and Ghatikara — the qualities of Brahma Sahampati, who dwells in the Pure Abodes. Some of the suttas that are mentioned directly or indirectly in this session: — Mahāpadāna Sutta (DN 14) — Saṅgīti Sutta (DN 33) — Mahāsamaya Sutta (DN 20) — Kāmayoga Sutta (Iti 96) — Paṭhamapuggala Sutta (AN 8.59) — Saṁyojanasutta Sutta (AN 10.15) — Paṭhamavitthāra Sutta (SN 48.15) — Ekaanāgāmitthera Vatthu (Dhp 218) — Hatthaka Sutta (AN 3.127) — Mahāvaccha Sutta (MN 73) — Mahāparinibbāna Sutta (DN 16) — Ghaṭikāra Sutta (MN 81) — Sahampatibrahma Sutta (SN 48.57) — Andhakavinda Sutta (SN 6.13) — Gārava Sutta (SN 6.2) Much merit (bohoma pin) to the people who made this request. When we're exposed to some threat or danger, an instinctual response is either fear or aggression. We can see the same pattern in animals in the "flight or fight reaction" to danger. As humanity has been exposed to a media onslaught depicting the dangers of the pandemic for the last two years, we can see a lot of fearful and angry reactions.Unfortunately, both anger and fear are unwholesome mindstates, and acting on them can create a lot of bad karma.Ajahn Dhammasiha recommends us to develop the 4 Brahmavihāras ('Divine Abodes') instead:Loving Kindness 'Mettā'Compassion 'Karuṇā'Sympathetic Joy 'Muditā'Equanimity 'Upekkhā'These mindstates are extremely wholesome, and if devoloped mindfully and persistantly, will help us to respond skilfully to any external crisis. www.dhammagiri.netwww.facebook.com/dhammagiri-forest-hermitagewww.youtube.com/channel/UCJINt0JJBfFm_x0FZcU9QJwwww.tinyletter.com/dhammagiri/archive

From the Transcendence, which is called Kṛṣṇaloka, there emanates a glowing effulgence that resembles the tail of a comet. This glowing effulgence is unlimited, immeasurable, and unfathomable. Within this effulgence there are innumerable glowing planets, each of them self-luminous. Somewhere, a limited part of that glowing effulgence is covered by material energy, just as a part of the sky is covered by a cloud. Within this material energy there are innumerable universes, in every universe there are innumerable material planets, and the earth is one of these planets. Thus we can understand what an insignificant part of the entire cosmos is this globe on which we live.[...] Men with developed consciousness, therefore, do not waste time making excursions, real or imaginary, to the moon. Such intelligent persons do not endeavor to achieve temporary sense enjoyment. Rather, they apply their conserved energy for the sake of spiritual cultivation. They discharge religious duties for the satisfaction of the Supreme Lord, and not for personal sense enjoyment. The signs of such exceptional devotees of the Lord are that they are unattached to material enjoyment, contented, pure in heart, attached to devotional service, free from affection for temporary things, and devoid of false ego. According to Vedic injunctions, such great personalities ultimately attain the place where the Supreme Personality of Godhead predominates and where there is no death, no birth, no old age, and no disease. On the way to these spiritual planets, such personalities pass through the sun line called arcir-mārga. And on the way they can see all the planets between here and the spiritual world. ••• links where to read the book: biglink.to/lightofthebhagavata & photos of all the illustrations are here www.sravanamdiaries.com/light-of-the-bhagavata/ & please follow our facebook.com/sravanamdiaries and instagram.com/sravanamdiaries pages for paintings per episode and more interesting posts

Taravandana talks on love in the spiritual life which is followed by led meditations. April 2013 The post Love, Compassion, Joy, Equanimity – the Sublime Abodes appeared first on Manchester Buddhist Centre.
2011-11-02 - Divine Abodes: Equanimity - Equanimity is the mental state of balance and non-reactivity that arises when we are resting in open, wakeful presence. This talk reviews the key pathways to equanimity in the face of difficulty. We also explore the blessing of equanimity: the freedom to respond to our life with wisdom, compassion and love. 2011-10-26 - Divine Abodes: Joy - Joy is an innate capacity, an expression of unconditional presence with life. Yet for many, it is blocked by our conditioning to grasp after life and to defend against loss. This talk explores how we can develop the selfless presence that allows for joy, and nourish that joy so it blossoms in our life. 2011-10-19 - Divine Abodes: Compassion - We cultivate compassion by letting ourselves be touched by the suffering within and around us. Because our conditioning is to avoid vulnerability, the path of compassion requires courage and purposefulness. As we awaken to the truth of our connectedness, our hearts become increasingly tender and our actions serve the healing of our world. 2011-10-08 - Unconditional Love for the Life Within - (Retreat Talk) The tyranny of "should" prevents us from living and loving fully. This talk explores how we get trapped in the identity of a flawed self and the ways a wise attention can free us. Please support this podcast by donating at www.tarabrach.com or www.imcw.org. Your donation makes a difference! Thank you!
2011-10-05 - Divine Abodes: Lovingkindness - Love is the most basic expression of who we are, and yet it is often obscured by the trance of separation and fear. This talk explores how we habitually armor our hearts, and the training of attention that awakens us to unconditional, all inclusive love. A classic form of the metta (lovingkindness) meditation is part of the talk. Please support this podcast by donating at www.tarabrach.com or www.imcw.org. Your donation makes a difference! Thank you!

EXPANDED EDITION EPISODE #2: SERVITORS, ARTIFACTS & ABODESThis is part two of a special three part series meant to expand what has been put forth already in the original Cauldron of Worlds podcast series. The Expanded Edition will be focusing on mythologies, gods, religions, and other related elements. Again, we'll be using a Marco to Micro approach for the creation, meaning it will start from large, broad topics and work its way down to the smaller, more detailed ones as this series progresses. Please note that there is a lot of material tied into each episode which further augments this podcast and aids you in your world creation. This material can be found in the homework and reference section (or on the webpage where this podcast is posted if you are listening to it from some other source). It is highly recommended that you seek this information out as it has been set up to augment this podcast and in some cases have the podcast be predicated on the material for each episode. So getting it and reading/using it would be very helpful in your world creation process.Special thanks to Da Camera for their wonderful music in this episode, which you can find more of at: https://magnatune.com/artists/albums/dacamera-celtic/lofi_play
