Contributing our latest episode is London's ANNX, a regular figure within the city's cutting-edge undercurrent whose many contributions include co-curation of the Whomp, Perspectives, and once-shrouded Magick events, and a residency at the beloved Above Below festival. Anna's tireless dedication to the scene goes hand-in-hand with her unmistakable talent behind the decks, as evidenced by an impressive repertoire of mixes and set recordings, and which I was fortunate enough to witness first-hand last summer in the Chilterns. Here Anna demonstrates her well-honed craft over the course of two meticulously plotted hours, diving seamlessly into manifold forms of deep, heavy psychedelia before emerging in a wave of euphoric bliss. Thanks Anna! @annx-anna-whomp Artwork by Angelina Nikolayeva.
Leadership is more than just strategy; it's about self-awareness, emotional mastery, and the ability to lead from a place of integrity and presence. In this special live session, renowned leadership coach Joyce Chen joins a room full of entrepreneurs for a deep, unfiltered conversation on what it truly means to lead with consciousness. This episode features four live coaching sessions, where Joyce guides participants through some of the most pressing leadership dilemmas:
Laima Adelaide and Nils Edte, the creative minds behind Stuttgart's Predawn Records, have been contributing to the deep techno landscape with their evocative soundscapes for the last few years. As key players in the scene, their productions and live performances are leaving a lasting impression—especially for those fortunate enough to experience their standout set at Above Below this summer. Laima's forthcoming EP, BLAZE, is set to release on December 12th, available on both vinyl and digital formats. The title track, BLAZE, takes listeners on a journey through moody, hypnotic soundscapes, driven by rolling rhythms and reptilian-like percussive elements and effects. This beautifully crafted composition is a testament to Laima's artistry, voicing her musical vision through the language of techno. @amlia @predawnrecords www.instagram.com/laimaadelaide/ www.instagram.com/predawn_records/ Write up by @danpeplow Follow us on social media: @itsdelayed linktr.ee/delayed www.delayed.nyc www.facebook.com/itsdelayed www.instagram.com/_____delayed www.youtube.com/@_____delayed
Recorded live at Above Below 2024, Chiltern Hills, UK. Earlier this summer I had the pleasure of finally visiting Above Below, a magically warm and inspiring festival tucked intimately within the Chilterns which I had heard so much about over years. What I discovered there was a community that immediately felt like home, a weekend full of moments both immaculately deep & breathlessly exuberant, and a true sense of independence and discovery in the spirit of the festival. Playing in the UK will always be a special honor for me, and I wanted to capture my appreciation for such a pivotal scene while pushing myself in ways that are distinctly my own. This set helped me find more than a few footholds in my own practice and I'm so happy to share the recording, one from a lineup full of friends & inspirations. Hope you enjoy it! @abovebelowfestival Artwork by Malte Schumann.
Ben Kaczor is no stranger to us here at Delayed. After listening to, playing and following his musical progression through the years, we finally had the opportunity to meet properly this past summer at Above Below. The ensuing conversations and time spent together only deepened our appreciation and respect for the young artist and his incredible talent. His music is deeply emotive, and contains a sort of restraint that's not often seen or heard. All things we like to uplift on our platform. Tabula Rasa is his latest musical foray that comes to us via the Crescent London imprint and their ‘Drifting Sands' VA release. As the title implies, latin for ‘Blank Slate' the tune starts off strongly with just bare percussion elements and a swelling, rhythmic synth. Establishing that all important deep groove that Ben is known for in his tracks. Progressing along sweeping pads periodically make their presence known, adding a tinge of sadness, and here we've reached the crescendo. The claps come in, a hands in the air moment that's all too familiar but done tastefully as would be expected. Like a blank slate, the track is versatile and could do well in many a situation or style of set. Ben Kaczor is joined by Daniel[i], Eric Cloutier, and Blazej Malinowski to round out the stacked ‘Drifting Sands' VA which will be released into the world on September 12th. NEW EPISODE……WHHHHY ARE YOU DOING THIS?!?!?!!!?!??!!!! What do ‘all of us' and a ‘train' have in common? STRANGERS!!!! And so it comes to pass….the Watch/Skip'ers review the new horror/remake/reboot “Strangers - Chapter 1”, the first in a proposed trilogy-prequel to the cult 2008 original. This episode is dedicated to the dudes over at WildreamPod as we stole their format like strangers in the night - Emcee and Cupcake had a full slate weekend and the recording came together last minute with both hosts literally coming from their 6 PM showing and immediately recording. Hence, no Q&Alex, no Cast-Grab, don't expect extensive research…we took it “on the fly”. While Emcee has not-so-fond memories of the first film (Editor (Beanie): it's a really good story. Not sure if I wanna high five Troy over at Not A Bomb or scold him. More food in my bowl or I'll gut you Strangers-style), he and Cupcake slice and dice the Renny Harlin directed film (remember THAT guy?) starring a bunch of newcomers you've seen somewhere before but can't place. Is this horror writ large and worthy of possibly pee-ing your pants from jump scares and dread or is it rancid cheese unworthy of the sniff. For plusses, *sings* let's all go to the lobby….let's all go to the lobby…let's all go to the lobbbbbyyyyy….where Cupcake talks movie treats. Then Emcee goes all chef-y on us. *sings* WAR…..Huhh….GOOD GAR-LAND!....what is it GOOD for?....Brand new ep is streaming…GET IT IN YOUR EARS….say it again!!!!! Alex Garland's eagerly awaited fourth directorial and scripted effort “Civil War” has been unleashed and Cupcake and Emcee are right out on the front line giving you the scoop. Starring Kirsten Dunst (minus any web-slinging hunks) and a cadre of Garland's trusted performers from his other works, the film's trailer and marketing set expectations high…”From the Director of Ex Machina and Annihilation”. Does it live up to the hype or flounder in its messaging to the audience? Polarizing and provocative, Civil War becomes the first of Watch/Skip+'s second chapter with a new co-host to feature one of the hosts changing his initial recommendation by the end of episode. Don your “Press” vest, kevler, and helmet and dig in the trenches with us for Alex Garland #Four (Editor's note from Beanie: what are you trying to make Garland the NEXT Tarantino? Stop it and feed me!) Before that Emcee pluses a new streaming show and Cupcake spotlights a new sustainable, recyclable skin and hair care line with a catchy name. GET US IN YOUR EARS!!!!! Quit Monkey(Man)-ing around and GET A NEW EPISODE IN YOUR EARS!!!! “John Wick in Mumbai”, you say? Ticket SOLD! The Watch/Skip'ers cock their critic guns and suit up for the action vengeance, social commentary-tinged directorial debut of noted, SAG and BAFTA award winning actor Dev Patel. Is it the “audacious” film debut that stunned SXSW audiences or is it a meta-cloned, US-Bollywood inspired- actioner-masquerading-as-a-Bollywood-US inspired-actioner, film directing debut that is beautiful but flat arthouse action? Where Emcee and Cupcake fall on this may surprise you (Hint: when the hosts talk more about behind the scenes than the actual film itself…there may be…..issues.) But first Cupcake reminisces about his bouncing, flipping college days, and then Emcee plusses a fun new game in the spirit of “Q and Alex”. Speaking of "Q and Alex": IT'S BACK! And the new format is a double-double. Not THAT kind of double-double, sicko! Emcee has two questions, Cupcake has two questions. Get to know your hosts in a unique fashion! "The Year of the Lesbian" continues as Emcee and Cupcake pump *clap*....YOU up with Rose Glass's sophomore effort "Love Lies Bleeding" starring Bella/Charlie's Angel herself Kristen Stewart, newcomer Katy O'Brien, and Ed Harris. This movie at the very least stomps "Drive-Away Dolls" into the pavement but does it's vision of a queer "Juliet and Juliet" meets "Breaking Bad" on steroids work or are the creative freedoms as out control as the mullets, muscles, and chain-smoking in this 80's "Feel Bad" love story? The Watch-Skip'ers take an extra free-flowing, meaning-searching 35+ minutes in the spoilers section to tell you. EPISODE SIXTY-NINE!!!!! The irony that the Boys for Episode 69 (!) are reviewing Ethan Coen's new frenetic farce comedy "Drive-away Dolls" which is overflowing with "lesbian s%^t" is not lost. Gorgeous Margret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan take to the road in a Coen-esque Thelma and Louise road movie-crime thriller hybrid. Should you drive TO the theatre to see it or "drive-away"?

Rai of the Gentleman's Guide to Midnite Cinema fame) review the long awaited, much reviled, divisive and polarizing sequel/crossover/shared with everything Disney/Marvel you can think of, MCU #33 - THE MARVELS!!!! It's a clash of titans - that being Masaki who loathes Captain Marvel and Cupcake the official Carol Danvers MCU stan - as they debate the merits of the film, the state of the MCU, and if we really want more or less from the Marvel shared-onslaught. The Watch/Skip'ers are back after a short break welcoming onto the show one of our "Pod Fathers"- Sam U. Rai of the Gentleman's Guide to Midnite Cinema - for a suitably EPIC discussion of legendary and pioneering filmmaker Martin Scorsese's EPIC new film "Killers of the Flower Moon". In an episode that is nearly the run time of the movie itself (but still shorter than our Oscars ep...hehe), these Scorsese fans discuss all things Marty, the tragedy inflicted on Indigenous people, the nature of greed and corruption, the "devil you know", and the evil you don't see. There's also a ton of talk about great character actors and their performances here. I want to play a pod....Before you stand two critics whose mouths have run amok and inflamed your sense of film...loving some theatrical and streaming movies while relegating others to the "Skip" bin. Will you press play and be able to resist their charms as they turn their acid tongues towards the brand new 10th entry in the long running, now self referential horror franchise - Saw X? Or will the audio trap of bantering and franchise nostalgia be too much for you and cause you to reach for the timestamps? Get battle-ready for a doozy of an episode as the Watch/Skip'ers welcome back E.f. Contentment and his singular wit and wry humor to take on Expend4bles, the fourth in the Stallone-Statham-Lundgren-Couture fronted franchise. Clearly the film - which welcomes Megan Fox and others to the cast- had an unintended effect as the trio dole out bad imitations, express anger over cutesy franchise film titles, and have their passions run amok staining the proceedings like bad CGI blood. But is this summer "bullets, buddies, and babes" film a Watch or a Skip? Welcome to episode ninety-nine of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast! This week we have a Portland, Maine local legend, Burcay Gurcan on the show. He's a Portland Maine institution and we chatted with him about all things Portland/Casco Bay, water polo (yes, water polo,) and how he's single-handedly gotten so many people into Swimrun. We got a bunch of requests to get him on the show and we're glad to share his story with you!But first... Training UpdateIt's still the off-season for us for a few weeks and life is good. While no actual mythological creatures (hydras) were spotted on the race course that we heard about...it was still an awesome event with a ton of participants.Over in France, Swimrun Man announced their race dates for 2022. We'll save everyone our attempts to pronounce the names of all the events so head over to their website to see their four events for next year. As a bonus, all four events have ÖTILLÖ Merit Race distances for those trying to accumulate ÖTILLÖ ranking points. Finally, one of our favorite races (to view from a distance) Hellas Frostbite Swimrun is taking place on December 1st. This race raises funds for the Swedish Cancer Society and it's an all around crazy event in water cold enough to make you blush...whether you want to or not. That's it for this week. Jackson Walker painting of the Battle of Withlacoochee In January and February of 1836, the eyes of the United States in the press were concentrated upon the Withlacoochee River, where a relative handful of Seminole and Mikosukee warriors and their families were ensconced to resist the Indian removal policy of the United States. We've discussed how the path to the Second Seminole War was paved with tariffs, land grabs, broken treaties – and a fundamental misunderstanding on the part of the US Government about who the Seminole were. For its own convenience, rather than deal with more than a dozen different bands of Seminole tribes, the US Government created the political fiction of a unified Seminole nation. In fact, the Seminole comprised many disparate tribes from different backgrounds and cultures. Although loosely aligned throughout the Florida territory, their primary unity came from opposition to forced removal west to the Oklahoma Territory. The commanding general in Florida, Duncan L. Clinch, had dealt with Seminole for more than a decade. Despite unrest and scattered Seminole violence against sugar plantations in East Florida in the last half of 1835, Clinch held out hope to secure an agreement. He amassed a military force to march from Fort Drane to meet the Seminole chiefs in the Withlacoochee River region of Central Florida. He intended to awe the Seminole with his Army's strength so that the Seminole would, in his view, recognize resistance was futile and they should prepare to pack their bags to leave Florida on waiting transport ships in Tampa Bay. And if the Seminole rebuffed his last peace overture, his Army would crush them and deport the survivors. He failed to recognize the Seminole had a vote in this proposal and that they had other ideas about the removal policy; namely, they would refuse to leave, but would fight by force of arms to the last Indian rather than consent. The Battle of the Withlacoochee was the first U.S. Army-planned engagement with the Seminole. The inconclusive battle came around the same time Seminole were ambushing a 108-soldier column moving along the Fort King Road from Fort Brooke, Tampa. When troops faltered in the battle, Clinch unsheathed his sword and waved his symbol of authority to motivate troops to maintain discipline and form properly to fight. Map that shows location of Fort Drane, the later Fort Clinch, and the Dec. 31, 1835 location of the battle with the Seminoles in the Withlacoochee. (Above) (Below) a notional reproduction of a typical military fort of the era. Autodidact, living historian, and military reenactor Jesse Marshall returns to the Seminole Wars podcast to answer these questions and to provide perspective on why things went the way they did. The outcome was not foreordained. Seminole War soldier reenactor Jesse Marshall explains the situation to Matt Milnes, admist other Soldier-reenactors. Swimrun superstar Trista Mennen mailed Brooke her KORP suit that is a size small for her to check it out. We’ll report back.Chipper tried LMNT hydration after hearing that friend of the show, Adam Skolnick, had tried it during his recent feat of endurance. LMNT has some pretty cool flavors and Chipper has been digging it.Will Watt from Above Below recently sent us one of their super popular RuckRafts to test for the show. We are super stoked to check it out in open water soon. The RuckRaft is an inflatable raft that comes with a built in dry bag to tow pretty much anything across the water. This thing looks perfect for a true Swimrun adventure. Stay tuned for a full review of the RuckRaft coming soon.Untethered ThoughtsMarcus reached out to us in response to our last Gear Talk show where we reviewed the Ark Sports KORP wetsuit. He mentioned his thoughts on what the back zipper pocket was for after hearing us go on and on about how we thought the placement was weird. Essentially, the zipper is for your partner to easily access, not yourself. You carry your partner’s nutrition or what have you and they carry yours. Not only does this make a ton of sense, it’s also totally in the spirit of the partner aspect of Swimrun. We then go philosophical for a bit...We collectively loved Marcus’s reasoning so thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. You can learn more from Marcus on his website.Tethered ThoughtsWe wanted to remind everyone of the new Swimrun Swap Meet forum on FB. This is a forum for people that are looking for Swimrun gear to buy, sell or trade. So if anyone got one of the KORP suits on faith but the sizing didn’t work out, we have a place for you to try to trade it. Join the Swimrun Swap Meet today! Frank Paddle Gear ReviewThese paddles are the original carbon fiber swim paddles. Fredrik’s story is a great one and it’s hard not to root for Frank Paddle as a company. These paddles are essentially made by hand and a lot of thought and experimenting went into creating these. You can check out Episode 50 to get the whole story. We were sent the following size paddles:M: length: 21.5cm, width: 19cmL: length: 23.5cm, width: 20.5cmSince we only had one set of each, Chris sent his Large paddles to Brooke to test and Chipper sent his Medium paddles to Annie. So they look cool, they are super light and really stiff. Now, do they work?Swimming ImpressionsFrank Paddle is something completely different. They feel super light and it was a different swimming experience due to the stiffness of them and how much water was being moved. The only way to get to how they perform was to test them.Brooke tested the paddles (with the caveat that the Frank Paddles are larger than the ones that she normally uses) and was about 2 seconds faster per 100yd even though her stroke rate went down noticeably. Over a longer distance, she did two 1-mile (1,650yd) swims, one with her normal synergy paddles and one with the Frank Paddles. In that test the Frank Paddles were almost 2 minutes faster than the regular paddles. Shoulder fatigue was enhanced using the Frank Paddles. Brooke wasn’t a fan of the paracord attachment.Chris saw similar speed improvements to Brooke, albeit less scientific. The feel of the water was very different and every stroke felt very powerful due to the combination of stiffness and lack of holes.“It moves water with aplomb” was the way that Annie (and her friend Caleb) would describe it. While she wasn’t used to using paddles as large as she tested, she saw 4 seconds per 100yd improvement but less so over longer sets due to shoulder fatigue. Annie’s friend Caleb, a born and bred open water swimmer, was cool enough to try the paddles out. He thought that the paddles resulted in one of his faster swims on an open water route that he swims often. He did say that he lost the feel of the water because the paddles were so effective at moving water.Chipper felt that the paddles were super light and was wondering if he would get used to it after using them for a while. He also liked the hole pattern of the paddles and the paracord attachment. Transition/Running ImpressionsWe were all really concerned about durability but Fredrik assured us that they can take a pounding. Sharp pointy things are the enemy of course, but other than that these paddles are designed to handle the rigors of swimrun. We also all agreed that these paddles shouldn’t be an issue on run legs other than the fear of losing them because they are so light or the unsubstantiated fear that they will break if you fall.Other than the paracord straps that are more of a personal preference, the setup for transitions and Swimrun in general are a non-issue. Pull Buoy Rankings RankingsChipper 4 Pull BuoysChipper felt that this paddle wouldn’t be an everyday paddle but they are awesome. They will make you faster (whether placebo effect or not) and are the hottest rage in Swimrun. He will be racing in them.Annie 4 Pull BuoysAnnie thinks that there is no denying the tech in the paddles that even made her faster. She docked points for the price point being so high. She would rate her Synergy paddles a 3.5-4 pull buoys and those are $8. If she was trained up for them, she would use the Frank Paddles.Chris 4.5 Pull BuoysChris would give Frank Paddles 5 pull buoys but for the cost. He thinks that these paddles are a total game-changer if you’re trained up for them and looking for extra speed in the water. He’s a big fan and is a total convert.Brooke 4 Pull BuoysBrooke thinks that if she was able to try a smaller paddle that she would have awarded them 4.5 pull buoys. She thought that they were awesome but she wasn’t a fan of the strapping and the price point. They are the nicest paddles that she’s ever swimming with and thought that they are the real deal.Overall ImpressionsWe all thought that these are the real deal and a total game-changer for swim paddles. If you have the funds and/or desire definitely check out Frank Paddles. They are an amazing piece of tech. Period. If you want to learn more about swim paddles in general, check out our Gear Talk episode all about Swim Paddles with special guest John Stevens. That’s it for this week’s Gear Talk show. Welcome to episode fifty-eight of the Low Tide Boyz - A Swimrun Podcast!Partner’s month continues with a really fun interview this week. Today we have the Swimrun duo of Trista Mennen and Amy Bush, A.K.A Team ADORKable. Trista and Amy have been big supporters of the show and we’re super stoked that our listeners will get to learn more about their love for Swimrun.More on this later in the show.ShoutoutsWe have a very special shoutout this week for our newest Patron on Patreon: Mel Jensen. We really appreciate her support to help keep the lights on (and help cover our outsized sticker postage bills). You’re literally the best!Adventure Time/Training UpdatesThe unstructured training continues. We’ve been getting the bug to go out and do a Swimrun practice so that will be on deck at some point this month. On the adventure time front, our friends at Above Below in the UK sent us one of their uber-popular Ruckrafts to test out and review and we plan on putting it through the paces when we head back to Lake Sonoma in a few weeks for our first official test run of the course that we’ve been working on.Feats of EnduranceThis week’s Feats of Endurance winner is Scot Brockbank from Ontario, Canada. He’s been winning at Stava titles this week with such gems as: “Morning run through mud, I mean snow!” and “Wet feet and the gathering of eagles.” We’re not sure what that means but we’re loving it.Make sure to join us on Strava and cheer on your fellow Swimrunners as they train all over the world. This Week in Swimrun (Powered by Raceid.com)We have a couple of updates to share this week.Last week, ÖTILLÖ and the XTRI World Tour announced a new virtual challenge called the Ö till X Ultimate Endurance Challenge. This challenge takes participants on a global adventure to discover race tracks and sites of ÖTILLÖ and the XTRI World Tour. The global virtual event starts in February and participants will receive a new challenge to complete each month through the end of the year. In December, everyone that completed the challenge will receive a cool t-shirt and be entered in a drawing for a place in the ÖTILLÖ World Championship and the Extreme Triathlon Norseman. Sign up for this challenge on raceid.com.We have a mini-correction from last week’s edition: I had a brain fart and mentioned that Swimrun Lake James is on March 24th when it’s on April 24th. My bad on that one. That’s it for this week. Feel free to email us to tip us off to any events or Swimrun news that you’d like for us to share on the show.UpdatesThe people have spoken and the Low Tide Boyz trucker hats have been ordered. Now we wait 4-6 weeks.Remember to drop us a message on IG or send us an email with your address if you’d like a free“Super Stoked on Swimrun” sticker. The stickers are arriving this week from the print shop so be on the lookout for those in the mail by next week. This Week’s InterviewWhat can we say about Trista and Amy? They are literally “ADORKable” and it’s hard for us to think of another team that loves Swimrun as much as they do. We really enjoyed hearing how they met, found Swimrun, and the adventures that ensued. We covered a lot of ground in this interview from their first race experience all the way to how they set up their own Swimrun during the pandemic. You can follow Trista and Amy’s endurance adventures on their blog. That’s it for this week’s show. Erin Halper is on a mission to help ambitious professionals achieve the freedom, flexibility, and work-life integration that come with consulting. Guided Meditation to Activate your Connection to Above & Below
In Episode 20, Marx has a conversation with painter Erik Nieminen. Erik grew up in Ottawa as a member of a family in which being an artist was encouraged. In 2007 he obtained his BFA from the University of Ottawa and his MFA from Concordia University in 2010. After that he moved to Berlin where he worked for over 4 years, he returned to live and work to Montreal in 2016. His paintings walk on the intersection of abstraction and commonly known forms. In this interview he points out that in his work “the content always follows form”. This premise allows him to explore different aspects of a painting with freedom and honesty. Please visit Erik’s website to check out his paintings. His recent solo shows include “The Unreal” at the Albemarle Gallery in London England and earlier this year he presented “Above Below” at the Art Gallery of Outremont in Montreal. He has participated in several group shows in Berlin, Frankfurt, Montreal, and London. He was recently awarded with the Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series that granted him a ticket to the finals being held in Miami this winter. It was a really enjoyable conversation and we hope you enjoy it as much as we have. Thanks for listening!

The Writer and the Critic elects to stay at home and rest its feet this month as your hosts, Kirstyn McDermott and Ian Mond, give you a rundown on the recently announced ballots for the Ditmar and Chronos Awards. Ian grabs a shovel ad promptly digs himself a Ditmar-shaped hole. Kirstyn highlights the emergence of the podcast as a dominant form of "fan publication" on both ballots. They then discuss gender bias in The Periodic Table of Storytelling (which is based on the TV Tropes wiki) -- not to mention gender bias on Ian's hoodie! -- as well as a related blog post by Ann Leckie. Ian laments the likely closure of Salon Futura but hopes Wizard's Tower Press (and its fine online book store) will continue. Kirstyn still refuses to buy an iPad. Above/Below by Stephanie Campisi and Ben Peek is a listener-recommended title which is comprised of two linked novellas published as a single "flip-style" book. There are very few spoilers in this review but if you haven't read the book and wish to skip ahead, the discussion begins at 39:30 and ends around 54:15. The official podcast books are The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Díaz (chosen by Ian) and Liar by Justine Larbalestier (recommended by Kirstyn). Be warned: both these discussions contains MASSIVE SPOILERS!! They begin at 54:15 for Oscar Wao and 1:20:20 for Liar. If you haven't already read the books, you may want to come back later when you have. Especially when it coms to Liar. Kirstyn and Ian are very serious about that. Look how sternly their fingers are wagging! To hear a final wrap-up, brief mention of feedback, and some very exciting podcasty news, listen in from 1:39:00. For the next episode, Ian has chosen The Resurrectionst by Jack O'Connell while Kirstyn has picked Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood. In addition, they will be discussing the new split-novel/duology, Black Out and All Clear by Connie Willis, which was recommended by a listener. Whew, that's a whole bunch of words to get through! *** The Writer and the Critic adopts a book club approach to its discussion and will assume its listeners have either read the books in question or don't care if they find out that it was all but a dream in the end. There will almost certainly be spoilers, so you are encouraged to read the chosen titles ahead of time. It'll be much more fun that way and Ian and Kirstyn won't get near as many death threats! ***
This month on The Writer and the Critic, your valiant hosts, Ian Mond and Kirstyn McDermott, venture forth to the home of their special guest: Galactic Suburbian, Alex Pierce. Having been rewarded with red wine and orange cake, they discuss the origins of Galactic Suburbia as well as the future of its brand new sister podcast, Galactic Chat, then proceed to paddle about in the murky waters of genre and gender. Alex admits a literary crush on Alastair Reynolds. Ian confesses mild paranoia about his reading habits. Kirstyn warns that her inner feminist is pretty much permanently on the loose now. Oh, and Happy Birthday, Galactic Suburbia! Alex has chosen Bold As Love by Gwyneth Jones as her book for this month and so begins a rollicking roundtable on rock stars, romance and revolution. For those wishing to avoid spoilers -- and there are quite a few -- the discussion of this novel begins at 22:30 of the podcast and ends around 45:30. The official podcast books for March are My Name is Will by Jess Winfield, which Ian has recommended (but has a little trouble remembering), and Under the Poppy by Kathe Koja, which Kirstyn has chosen (and may or may not squee about). For your convenience once again, the starting points are 45:30 for My Name is Will and 01:00:00 for Under the Poppy. For a final wrap-up and preview of future podcasting goodness, tune back in by 01:31:30. For next month's podcast, Ian has chosen The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz and Kirstyn has picked Liar by Justine Larbalestier. Plus, there will be a third, listener-recommended title: Above/Below by Stephanie Campisi and Ben Peek. And finally, a heads-up for May when Ian and Kirstyn will be discussing the Black Out / All Clear duology by Connie Willis, as recommended by another listener. With over a thousand pages between the two books, your thoughtful hosts decided to let you know well in advance. See, they really are lovely people! *** Just a reminder that The Writer and the Critic adopts a book club approach to its discussion and will assume its listeners have either read the books in question or don't care if they find out that the plucky and generously endowed heroine comes to the realisation that she is simply an avatar trapped within a highly complex but ultimately futile online multi-player gaming system. There will almost certainly be spoilers, so you are encouraged to read the chosen titles ahead of time. It'll be much more fun that way and Ian and Kirstyn won't get near as many death threats! ***
