Friends, did you know that November is Foster Care and Adoption Awareness Month and National Adoption Month? A couple years ago I didn't know anything about these, or November's annual Stand Sunday observed by many American churches either. Honestly, I didn't know much about foster care at all. All that changed when several of my friends became foster parents, and I have been on a journey to learn more and support this community ever since. Listen in as I learn from my friend Mandi, a foster and adoptive mom who now works to support foster and adoptive families through an organization called Foster the Family. I can't wait for you to hear about the beauty and hardship weaved into foster care and Mandi's deep compassion and wisdom. Here are some highlights: foster care 101, Mandi's experiences with 18 foster children and 4 adoptions, relationships with foster kids' biological families, and ways you can support and join the foster care community. Mamas, you and I have a unique light to bring to the world to our children and also to other children around us. Some of them may come into our homes for a time or even stay forever. I invite you to think of the children and parents in the foster care world and consider, "How can I share this light that I have with others?" Embracing acceptance over accountability offers a transformative perspective for Christian mothers navigating the journey with their adopted teenagers. This approach does not imply condoning negative behaviors but fosters an understanding that these actions often stem from deeper, unresolved issues. Moving towards acceptance allows mothers to establish clear personal boundaries while promoting healing and growth, creating a nurturing environment that reflects their commitment to their faith and family values. By implementing an acceptance lens, these parents can cultivate space where genuine connection and growth can flourish, counterbalanced personal boundaries. As part of the Authentic Modeling Method this shift gives adoptive moms a peek into a powerful approach that can be transformative within a context of unconditional love and forgiveness. This method not only transforms the way mothers interact with their teenagers but deepens their own faith journey, drawing them closer to the essence of Christ's teachings on love and service. >>>Show notes for this episode can be found at dawnbaggett.com. >>>For additional support adoptive moms are invited to join the Circle of Second Moms Facebook group here: http://dawnbaggett.com/landing/opt-in-to-fb-group >>>To apply for private post-adoption coaching click here: https://dawnbaggett.com/page/waitlist >>>To hear more be sure to follow the show & turn on automatic downloads so you can listen to new episodes offline whenever you want.

Adoptive moms often find themselves in challenging situations, especially when it comes to managing defiant, disrespectful, and sometimes dangerous behaviors in their adopted teenagers. Traditional approaches lean heavily towards an accountability lens, believing that enforcing consequences for misbehavior will bring positive change. But this method, though seemingly logical, can actually escalate tensions further. This episode along with part two on this same topic encourages the adoptive mom in this situation to explore an alternative approach to how she views problematic behaviors in the home by viewing problematic behaviors through a new lens of acceptance. As the Easter weekend approaches, it's crucial for adoptive mothers to consider their expectations in light of the reality of their family dynamics. This episode emphasizes the importance of acknowledging that not all family members might share the same enthusiasm or faith, leading to potential disappointments and tensions. By setting realistic expectations and focusing on personal worship and connection with God, listeners can experience a fulfilling Easter regardless of their family's level of participation. Podcast host Dawn Baggett advises moms to plan their Easter celebrations with achievable goals for a more peaceful and meaningful holiday, and reducing the chances of conflict and frustration. The emphasis is on the value of individual spiritual growth and the power of prayer in bringing families closer, both to God and to each other. Ultimately, the message is one of hope and faith, encouraging listeners to trust in God's timing and work in their lives and the lives of their loved ones. Dawn underscores the importance of not placing undue pressure on the Easter weekend to magically resolve family differences but instead to cherish the occasion as an opportunity for personal reflection and connection with God. Katie Faris knew that motherhood wasn't always going to be smooth sailing, but she was more than ready to deal with temper tantrums and dirty diapers. What she wasn't prepared for was receiving the news that three of her children had been diagnosed with a serious medical condition.  Katie's story is deeply touching to me. She's a pastor's wife and a writer who has shared her journey with others through books like God is Still Good: Gospel Hope and Comfort for the Unexpected Sorrows of Motherhood and He Will Be Enough: How God Takes You by the Hand Through Your Hardest Days.  Woven through both books is her own family's story as well as stories of others who found God to be trustworthy in the midst of their perplexities. Jenny is a wife of 28-1/2 years, a mother of 6 and a grandmother of 5. She is a birth mother and adoptive parent. Last year she and her husband adopted a boy who is 17, and her oldest is her 31-year-old ONLY daughter, who she had an open adoption with. Jenny says the open adoption with her daughter included face-to-face visits, and that she was included and welcomed by the adoptive family for the first 18 years of her daughter's life. Because of her experience as a birth mother, she feels it is very important for the correct information to be given to girls who find themselves at a crossroads with what to do with an unexpected pregnancy. As an adoptive parent herself, she says that adoptive parents should know the truth about adoption and stresses how important it is for them to get the education and healing they need from the reasons they are seeking to adopt before they do so. The story I have for you today spans many roles in the foster care community. My guest, Raquel McCloud, entered kinship care when she was just a young child. Kinship care is when a relative or close family friend takes the role of foster parent instead of a caregiver previously unknown to the child. There are many instances of informal kinship care occurring as well as formal kinship care. In many cases of kinship care, the relatives are left without many resources to help them establish boundaries with the biological parent who is also their own family member. In today's episode, Raquel shares her personal story of growing up in kinship care, becoming pregnant as a teen, and how she was given no other option but to put her child up for adoption. In spite of all she has been through, today Raquel is a birth mom in reunion with the very child she put up for adoption, a kinship adoptive mom to her half-sister, and an advocate for adoption, foster care, and other important topics. While Raquel wishes her life had been kinder, she is thankful that others can be inspired and learn from her experience going from a child in kinship care and biological teen mom to a birth mom in reunion and a kinship adoptive mom. I am so grateful to Raquel for sharing her story! Show Notes: https://theforgotteninitiative.org/raquel-mccloud-197/
