You can find Nickolas Butler at https://nickolasbutler.com/ or on IG @wiscobutler Amy discovered Nickolas Butler earlier this year when she attended the author event for his newest novel A Forty Year Kiss at Carmichael's Bookstore. Nick has six novels and a collection of short stories under his belt, but A Forty Year Kiss may be his first love story. His mind was set to wondering after he overheard a passionate conversation in his favorite local bar between two older people, a conversation that made him blush just a little. He began playing with the idea of what this couple's back story was. Nick's book asks readers to consider the difference between first love and love between mature adults, how life's baggage affects personal relationships, and whether people can really change. Nick also talks to us about his rural Wisconsin roots, why he read Babysitter Club books in his childhood, and the debate on whether he should wear a cape. For our book recommendation section of this episode, we decided to find some of our favorite books we've read as a result of being in a book club together for two decades. For the most part, our book club chooses novels, but there is one memoir in the lot, as well as contemporary fiction, historical fiction, sci-fi, and a classic. Episode 21 - Murdock and Marvel: 1983 This year things really start to accelerate in the comics world, as the direct market kicks into high gear. Marvel leads the way again, with a truly astounding number of new books. Welcome to the crazy years, folks. Its time to talk 1983. Convergence Con: https://www.convergence-con.org/ The Year in Comics Notable and Newsworthy Industry Trends Eagle Awards Dan's Favorite The Year in Marvel Events & Happenings New Titles New Characters Series Ending Who's in the Bullpen ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Paul Neary Dan's Favorite The Year in Daredevil Appearances: Daredevil #190-201, Incredible Hulk #279, Marvel Two-in-One #96, Marvel Fanfare #7, Iron Man #169 and Fantastic Four #255 Writing credits: Frank Miller (190-91), Alan Brennert (192), Larry Hama (193), Denny O'Neil (194-201) Pencilers: Klaus Janson (190, 192-96), Frank Miller (191), Larry Hama and William Johnson (197), William Johnson (198-201) Inks: Klaus Janson (190, 192-96), Terry Austin (191), Larry Hama and Klaus Janson (197), Danny Bulanadi (198-201) The year starts with another Double Issue as DD, Widow and Stone race to keep the Hand from resurrecting Elektra; Unbeknownst to DD, Stone finishes the job the Hand started, and Elektra lives again. Daredevil visits Bullseye telling him a story about a recent client and how's he's questioning what he's doing. This amazing story is our spotlight story this week. Next, we have a story about kingpin trying to get Ben Urich under his thumb by using his wife's desire for a new house to turn Urich dirty; ultimately Ben must decide how best to be a good reporter, a good husband and a good man. DD is on the trail of some stolen missiles, and they lead him to a cruise ship and a traveling magician who doesn't know the gun she stole from a guard she killed at the heist doesn't work. Tarkington Brown, who works for the mayor, finds that he only has a few weeks to live, so he recruits some cops to form a criminal killing murder squad as his way of making a final contribution before he dies; While she is drunk at a party, Heather tells Tark that Matt is DD, and Tarkington sends his squad to take down the Man Without Fear. The incapacitated Bullseye is kidnapped from his hospital by mysterious Asian agents. In the process, they shoot a visiting Wolverine, who tries to intervene. When Daredevil investigates, a recuperated Wolverine insists that the two team up and work on the case which sends Daredevil to Honshu Japan (the largest island). There he meets up with Dark Wind's daughter, Yuriko, who offers to help Daredevil find Bullseye if he's able to help her save her love interest from the power sway of her father. We learn Dark wind took Bullseye to repair his paralyzed body with adamantium so he can kill a Japanese delegate he doesn't agree with. Now healed, Bullseye betrays Dark Wind and makes his way back to the States; while Yuriko kills her father to save DD's life. The 5-book story arc ends with Bullseye back in New York who is looking to get back on Kingpin's payroll as a hit man. Black Widow comes checking in on Daredevil and a climactic battle in an old arena Jack Murdock once wrestled in to try to make ends meet. After a lengthy battle, Daredevil looks to finish Bullseye once and for all but is stopped by an image of his father that reminds him who he is (which is not a killer). The year ends with someone takes a shot at Foggy, and a wounded Daredevil enlists the Black Widow's aid in trying to find out who is trying to kill his partner. Issue 201 cover is by John Byrne. You can find more about them and their music at https://pixabay.com/users/lesfm-22579021/. The Grand Comics Database: Dan uses custom queries against a downloadable copy of the GCD to construct his publisher, title and creator charts. Comichron: Our source for comic book sales data. Man Without Fear: Kuljit Mithra's Daredevil site contains a staggering collection of resources about our hero, including news, interviews and comic details. The American Comic Book Chronicles: Published by TwoMorrows, these volumes provide an excellent analysis of American comics through the years. Because these volumes break down comic history by year and decade they are a great place to get a basic orientation on what is happening across the comic industry at a particular point in time. Joshua and Jamie Do Daredevil: A fantastic podcast that does a deep-dive into Daredevil comics. This ran from 2018-2020, and covered most of the first volume of Daredevil, and was a fun way to get an in-depth look at each issue of Daredevil from 1-377. My Marvelous Year: This is a reading-club style podcast where Dave Buesing and friends chose important or interesting books from a particular year to read and discuss. This helped me remember some fun and crazy stories, and would be a great companion piece to Murdock and Marvel for those who want more comic-story-specific coverage. BOOKLIST The following books have been frequently used as reference while preparing summaries of the comic history segments of our show. Each and every one comes recommended by Dan for fans wanting to read more about it! Licari, Fabio and Marco Rizzo. Marvel: The First 80 Years: The True Story of a Pop-Culture Phenomenon. London: Titan Books, 2020. This book is sort of a mess, as the print quality is terrible, and Titan doesn't even credit the authors unless you check the fine print. It's like this was published by Marvel in the early 60s! But the information is good, and it is presented in an entertaining fashion. So its decent, but I would recommend you see if you can just borrow it from the library instead of purchasing. Wells, John. American Comic Book Chronicles: 1960-1964. Raleigh: Two Morrows, 2015. Not cheap, but a fantastic series that is informative and fun to read. Wright, Bradford. Comic Book Nation: The Transformation of Youth Culture in America. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 2001. This is the revised edition. Marvel Year By Year: A Visual History. New York: DK Publishing, 2022. The academic in my rails at using information from any work that doesn't have an author credit, but this is a decent (if very surface) look at each year in the history of Timely / Marvel from 1939 to 2021. Cowsill, Alan et al. DC Comics Year by Year: A Visual History. New York: DK Publishing, 2010. Because its nice to occasionally take a peek at what the Distinguished Competition is up to. Dauber, Jeremy. American Comics: A History. New York, W.W. Norton & Company, 2022. An excellent, relatively compact history of the domestic comic industry from its 19th century origins through to recent 21st century developments. An excellent successor to Bradford Wright's Comic Book Nation.
On this episode, Marc and Joe recap the powerful and touching follow-up to Marvel's Black Panther - "Wakanda Forever". What we liked, what we didn't, and where we think the MCU is headed next. Plus, reviews of two comic books starring the newly introduced Namor, Prince of Atlantis... um, I mean Talokan. For those looking for a good place to dive into this character, we're discussing: X-Men #6 (1964), from Stan Lee and Jack Kirby Sub-Mariner: Marvels Snapshots #1 (2020), from Alan Brennert and Jerry Ordway
As a child I was taught to follow directions without asking questions and above all else, not to do anything that would bring shame to my family. Growing up in such a strict home was tough; I rebelled and made a lot of bad decisions. Those poor choices led to one of my hardest moments at a very young age; before I knew it, I was sixteen, pregnant and totally depressed; grieving my teen years and the adult life I had once dreamed about. High school became unbearable but thankfully I had some really amazing teachers that, instead of ostracizing me, showed me kindness in my time of sorrow. It was their compassion that helped me discover what I wanted to spend my future doing: teaching and providing students the same kindness I had been shown, while helping them learn. I was determined to become a teacher."A road need not be paved in gold to find treasures...", says Alan Brennert and truer words have never been spoken. As a single parent I was met with roadblocks but determined to find detours and get to my final destination. I worked hard to provide a good life for my daughter and myself. My parents offered me the world but I was determined to do it on my own. After building up my savings, I set out to buy our first home but was met with discouraging service; made to feel as though home ownership was an elite club that single moms weren't members of. Eventually, I gave up but not before a new fire was sparked.Since home ownership was no longer on the table, I changed my focus to my college education. Over the next few years I married the love of my life, JR, we blended our families and found joy. I also graduated with a Bachelor's of Education degree from the University of Central Florida. With this accomplishment I could focus on the fire that was quietly burning, Real Estate: being an agent that helped clients see the dream could be their reality. Now, not only am I a teacher but I'm also a licensed real estate agent. I am living a lifethat brings me so much joy and after years of uncertainty, now I cherish my experiences and know that each step was a part of the destined path to a life full of treasures. I get to provide service to others that positively impacts their lives; hearing from previous students and clients about how I was able to help them reach their goals, is truely what life is all about, especially a life dedicated to serving others.Create stunning Real Estate videos, easily. This week the gang reads historical fiction. Alisa and Aileen are old pros at this sub-genre while Josie and Lauren are more like dabblers. Ironically, almost all of the picks were in the WW2 category while Josie was the odd duck who traveled back to medieval Europe.Aileen read Moloka'i by Alan Brennert. She's been trying for years to read this book but every time she picked it up, she'd put it back down after asking herself, “do I really want to read about a leper colony?” Well, she finally read it and she's so glad she did. It was uplifting and inspiring and not at all the bummer she imagined it be at the outset. Thanks to her friend Pam for suggesting it!It took Lauren a moment to spit out the title, but The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Annie Barrows and Mary Ann Schaffer was a huge hit for her. This book took her a beat to get into but once she did, she never wanted it to end. Set during the German occupation of Guernsey during WW2, this epistolary-style book was a great yarn. As always, Lauren doesn't suggest books unless she loves the characters, and this book she highly recommends.Alisa found a real gem in The Only Woman in the Room by Heather Terrel. Set mostly during WW2 as well, this story is about Hettie Lamar's life, loves and her inventions. The gang was just floored to learn about this multi-faceted, self-taught woman whose mind was even more stunning than her famous face. There were some real mind blowers in this one, and the gang was just spellbound by Alisa's description.Josie went to the way-way back with Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose. It was murderous monks galore in this runaway bestselling book that was not only inspired by a medieval manuscript, it's also about one, hidden deep within a library that also a labyrinth. There are so many twists and turns, both metaphorically and in the plot, it will have your head spinning. But don't let the Latin freak you out. This is a real page turner as well as being a meditation on one of the biggest theological debates in Catholicism. Josie loved it.

PROMISES, PROMISES COMPOSER: Burt Bacharach LYRICIST: Hal David BOOK: Neil Simon SOURCE: The Apartment by I.A.L. Diamond and Billy Wilder (1960) DIRECTOR: Robert Moore CHOREOGRAPHER: Michael Bennett PRINCIPLE CAST: Jill O'Hara (Fran), Jerry Orbach (Chuck), Edward Winter (Sheldrake) OPENING DATE: Dec 01, 1968 CLOSING DATE: Jan 01, 1972 PERFORMANCES: 1,281 SYNOPSIS: CC Baxter is a young worker who is climbing the corporate ladder by lending out his apartment to married executives so they can have extramarital affairs without paying for a hotel. Baxter's conscience gets the better of him when his boss, Sheldrake, uses the apartment for himself and his mistress, Fran, the object of Baxter's affections. David Spencer outlines the evolution of cohesive orchestrations which carried through the scores of Broadway musicals, examining the significance of the sound composer Burt Bacharach and lyricist Hal David lent to the musical Promises, Promises. Orchestrator Jonathan Tunick mimicked the sound of the team's pop hits and rendered a score with songs which were uniquely “liftable” and could stand on their own, free from context. Tunick's recording sensibilities led him to a prosperous career in which he redefined a pop music sound for Broadway musicals. DAVID SPENCER is an award-winning musical dramatist, author, critic and musical theatre teacher. As lyricist-librettist: two musicals with composer Alan Menken: The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz (Ghostlight Records); Weird Romance (Columbia Masterworks, co-librettist: Alan Brennert); and the acclaimed colloquial English adaptation of La Bohème for the Public Theatre. Feedback Moloka‘i by Alan Brennert (rec’d by Lauren) The Moon–Spinners by Mary Stewart (rec’d by Kelly) A Thousand Ships by Natalie Haynes and Ariadne by Jennifer Saint (rec’d by Hannah) Questions 1. Let me preface by stating, for the record, that I fully realize how ridiculous this question is. :-p I adopted a senior cat not too long ago, and after many years of thinking I was a dog person I’ve realized that, in my heart of hearts, I am absolutely a cat person. I love that they have moods, and can be a total sweetheart one moment and a complete butthead the next. Anyway, on your recommendation I recently read Sabriel. I really enjoyed it, and hands down my favorite character was Mogget (because of course it was). Can you recommend any other books in which a cat is one of the main characters? Especially if a) they are a talking cat and b) they are kind of snarky or a smart aleck/jerk? Mimi Lee Gets a Clue is already on my TBR list, but any other recs in any genre are welcome. Thank you! -Diane 2. Hi guys, I’m currently in the process of curating my book list for summer. I just finished We Were Liars and am honestly devastated. I was entranced the whole way through. The setting, dialogue and characters were vivid. The writing had an air of poetry that I loved. The plot was wildly intriguing, slowly unfolding piece by piece. I am wanting something else like it. Other books I’ve read that I’ve enjoyed are The Mothers, Ask Again, Yes and Little Fires Everywhere. Please help me find something like this! Thanks! -Emily 3. I am going to Michigan for vacation in July with my two best friends. I would love a book set there. We will be going to Mackinac Island and Frankenmuth in particular. If you know of any fiction or non fiction set in those areas or around. I am aware of the movie / novel Somewhere in Time as that is a large reason I am going there -Lauren 4. Hi! I’m looking for a book series for a 7 year old who’s really digging the Princess in Black and the Princess Pulverizer books (she’s been toting them around like pirate booty). I’m pretty sure you guys have answered a similar question in the past and I dug through about 20 past episodes, but can’t seem to find it! Any help would be much appreciated!! -Kristi 5. My toddler is currently obsessed with dogs. She seeks them out on our walks, wants to help do ALL of the doggy chores for our pups at home, etc. I am looking for books featuring dogs to get for her. We have read most of the Good Dog Carl books, Pig the Pug, Skippy Jon Jones, and also a board book called Doggies. Do you have any other dog books that you think a 13 month old would enjoy? -Marelis 6. I have a friend who grew up loving vampire books but doesn’t read them any more because the relationships are always *problematic*. Any recs for more recent vampire books that avoid or undermine the bad tropes, specifically creepy age differences, iffy coercion and consent issues and lots of gaslighting and manipulation? She really liked how those issues were handled in the Daevabad series and she also loves the Greta Helsing books, Good Omens, and anything Witchy. Steampunk vibes, queer characters and F/F romance is always a plus. -Margot 7. Hi! I’ve been looking for books specifically on internalized misogyny and internalized racism to help my family understand how they’ve absorbed harmful ideals and aren’t immune to perpetrating white supremacy, anti-blackness, and sexism. We’re a hispanic family, but I can tell some of my family members don’t quite understand how entrenched they are in white supremacist beliefs. I haven’t seen anything just yet on this particular topic in books about race so if anyone has any suggestions I’d be super grateful! -Ashley Books Discussed Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comics by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Robert Hack The Song of the Lioness Quartet (Alanna: The First Adventure #1) by Tamora Pierce If We Were Villains by ML Rio (tw: domestic violence) The Walls Around Us by Nova Ren Suma (tw: death by suicide, lots of body-shaming) Snowed In by Rachel Hawthorne Once Upon A River by Bonnie Jo Campbell (tw: violence against women and children including rape, graphic violence, drug abuse) Mia Mayhem series (#1 Mia Mayhem is a Superhero) by Kara West and Leeza Hernandez Chronicles of Claudette (Giants, Beware! #1) by Jorge Aguirre and Rafael Rosado et al Stormy by Guojing Zorro and Mister Bud (Say Hello to Zorro!) by Carter Goodrich Better Off Red by Rebekah Weatherspoon Iron & Velvet by Alexis Hall For the Love of Men by Liz Plank Me and White Supremacy by Layla F. Alan Brennert is our guest this week. Brennert has worked on Wonder Woman TV show, Buck Rogers, LA Law, The New Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits and numerous comic book stories in his long career. His "To Kill A Legend" Batman story is considered a fan favorite. Brennert also has written for Star Trek for Marvel, and did four issues of The Brave And The Bold. He continue to write to this day.
In 1989, DC Comics published a Christmas special titled Christmas with the Super-Heroes #2. In it, was a charming Deadman tale with a surprising twist called "Should Auld Acquaintance Be Forgot", written by Alan Brennert and drawn by Dick Giordano. During this time in DC Comics' continuity, Kara Zor-El was dead (having sacrificed her life in Crisis on Infinite Earths) and a Matrix Supergirl had come and gone. Enjoy this audio interpretation of what happens when Boston Brand meets a mysterious woman who can see a ghost. Happy Holidays from Supergirl Radio! Our guest today is an Emmy-Award-winning writer for television, having written for series like Wonder Woman, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, L.A. Law, The New Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits. He's a Nebula-Award-winning writer of short stories and novels, including Time and Chance, Moloka'i, Honolulu, and most recently the wistfully nostalgic novel Palisades Park. He's written some of the best Batman comic-book stories ever, including my personal favorite Batman tale of all time, “The Autobiography of Bruce Wayne,” from The Brave and the Bold #197, in which we discover how a middle-aged Batman finally learned how to be brave enough to love again. It's an issue I've returned to time and again over the years, when I need to remind myself that you can tell a lifetime's worth of story in only twenty pages. http://BlastoffComics.com

In this very special episode, Chris and Cindy Franklin are joined by Chris' friend and podcasting mentor, Rob Kelly! Rob is the co-host of The Fire and Water Podcast, the writer of the award-winning Ace Kilroy web strip, the editor and compiler of Hey Kids, Comics! True-Life Tales from the Spinner Rack, and one helluva nice guy to boot! Rob and the Super Mates discuss three Batman tales penned by award-winning television writer and successful novelist, Alan Brennert. Brennert has only written a handful of comics in his career, but all are great gems, and his Batman tales are some of the character's best in his 75 year history. “To Kill A Legend” from Detective Comics #500: Batman is offered a chance to save his parents in a parallel reality. But should he deny that world a Batman? “Interlude on Earth-Two” from The Brave and the Bold #182: Batman finds himself mysteriously pulled to the alternate world of Earth-Two… a world where his counterpart has long been dead! He must strike an uneasy alliance with the Robin of that world to stop a vengeful Hugo Strange from destroying Gotham! “The Autobiography of Bruce Wayne” from The Brave and the Bold #197: Shortly before his tragic death, the Batman of Earth-Two recalls how he came to marry the love of his life…his former foe, the Catwoman! Subscribe via iTunes Big thanks to Rob for stopping by for a very lively discussion! Be sure to check out Rob's blogs and podcasts, starting at the Aquaman Shrine, with The Fire and Water Podcast. Do yourself a favor and sample the awesome webstrip that Rob co-created and writes, Ace Kilroy! And you, as a comic fan, owe it to yourself to own and love a copy of Hey Kids, Comics! True LifeTales From the Spinner Rack! Be sure to let us know what you think! What did you think of these tales? Would you like to hear mor guests on the show? Let your voice be heard! We'd love to read it aloud in an upcoming episode. Drop us a line in our comments section, or email us at supermatespodcast@gmail.com. If you're listening on iTunes, please consider leaving a review of our show! We're also on Facebook! Chris (aka Earth 2 Chris) co-hosts the Power Records Podcast with the aforementioned Rob Kelly over at the Fire and Water Podcast feed! Next time, Cindy and Chris read YOUR comments on past episodes!
In this episode, Chris and Cindy Franklin share two of their favorite comic book mini-series; The Untold Legend of the Batman by Len Wein, John Byrne and Jim Aparo, and The Legend of Wonder Woman by Kurt Busiek and Trina Robbins. Batman is targeted for destruction by a foe who knows his every secret! The Darknight Detective must reexamine his own history to discover the shocking identity of this merciless tormentor before it is too late! Listen as Chris and Cindy wade through flashbacks filled with Silver Age retcons, and question how long it takes to build a Batmobile! Plus, how does this thing REALLY end, anyway? It's apparently open for debate…and they have one! Then, on to Paradise Island, where Queen Hippolyta mourns the loss of her daughter in the Crisis on Infinite Earths. She gazes back through time to witness Wonder Woman's battle with the evil Atomia and her subatomic world! Our hosts delight at Robbins' great Golden Age-inspired artwork, but bemoan the presence of the most irritating brat ever to grace the comic page…SUZIE!!! So slide down the Batpole, hop in the Invisible Plane, and join us for a nostalgic trip, deep in the recesses of long boxes everywhere! Subscribe via iTunes Be sure to let us know what you think! What did you think of these two mini-series, or what's your opinion on retcons and reboots like Crisis on Infinite Earths? Let your voice be heard! We'd love to read it aloud in an upcoming episode.
