A fact may be true. But the truth of the fact is limited to the context in which it was found. Outside a meaningful context, the fact may mean something different. I sat down with Ishmael, A Russian American to discuss what's going on in Russia and in particular, why don't the Russian people rise up? It was quite interesting and revealing. The episode featured Co-Host Maurice Smith. We made several points on the podcast that is worth mentioning here: 1. Ishmael is a Jewish, Russian American whose Grandparents are from and live in Ukraine today. 2. Russians are against the war but are too poor to do anything about it as they spend their lives trying to survive; many can't even afford a washing machine. 3. All Russian males are automatically drafted into the army. 4. Elites are connected to Putin and would rather sell-off Chelsea FC than speak against or denounce Putin who has helped to grease the pockets of the oligarchs, many of whom are part of the same fraternity. 5. Why replacing Putin doesn't solve the problem of the Ukrainian invasion, as Putin is part of and head of the same fraternity that shares his ideals, Ex- KGB agents wanting the old Russia.... This is a Video and audio Podcast episode. The Video is only available on the Spotify platform or our YouTube channel. The audio is available on all platforms. I met up with a group of young people in Center City Philadelphia, who had set up a prayer station in City Hall, offering prayers, sharing hot chocolate and their faith. In fact, I interviewed two of the young people present, Collin and Mckenna, who spent the time to talk with me about their own transformation experience, sharing their faith from a handbook. Importantly, we were reminded that Orthodox Christians views salvation from a "theology of the already but not yet" - we are saved, we are being saved and we shall be saved, indication the transformational journey of the Christian experience. While speaking with Collin and McKenna, you could hear the other YAM youths announcing, "Hot chocolate, free bibles..." and praying for people who stopped to peruse the tables and to have coffee or grab some free literature. Towards the end, I sing a song that was written and composed by my twin brother, Ricardo McKenzie and yours truly - Renaldo McKenzie - years ago, that we had performed at a "Youth for Christ" Event and won the Caribbean Duet Competiton for. It's entitled: "Why Don't You Call Upon the Divine". The YWAM group wears red and white and will be in Center City for the rest of the week and probably the month from 11:00am - 3:00pm with their Prayer Station, offering prayers and sharing free literature, words of encouragement, prayers and their faith. Who are YWAM: "Youth With A Mission" reaches out in 180+ countries through three main areas — Evangelism, Training and Mercy Ministry. Their ministries cover every sphere of society, including ship-based medical care, performing arts teams, Bible training programs, business coaching, sports ministries, anti-trafficking work, and many more. From a late-night vision of waves of young people reaching every continent, given to a 20-year-old in the Bahamas, to a global ministry with over 20,000 workers, the growth of YWAM is the story of God's inspiration, God's grace for many mistakes, and the creativity of the Holy Spirit's leading. The NeoLiberal Round
The Sentencing Foundation and Resource-Based Sentencing and Supervision Part 3

The NeoLiberal Round

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 7, 2022 44:29

Do you believe that Resource-Based Sentencing & Supervision dilutes punishment as a deterrence to crime, since opportunities are limited or lacking in communities where some may still gain from turning to illegality? But not all crimes stem from lack of opportunities, some are a result of poor or sudden decision-making to gain advantage or from having adrenaline-rush leading to actions devoid of conscience a critical thinking in the moment; and that could be any of us. So, the answer cannot be lopsided, but the opening question is. For this episode, we continue to explore the Sentencing Funding whose Web Release event was held recently in Philadelphia, December 1, 2023. We were present and provided coverage, interviewing several of the organizers, board members, other attendees who were either benefactor, stakeholders, ex-offenders, Institutions heads etc. Today is the final part in the series. The episode will feature Rosalind Blackwell, an ex-offender who is now running her own re-entry program in Philadelphia. She makes a powerful point saying: “we can keep spending $45,000.00 per year to house in-mates or we can let Judge Sawyer not re-sentence them and send them to her re-entry program and will pay them 15/hr. in wages… I'm a testimony of what can be done [and needs to be done]," Rosalind B. And there's no denying that. Nevertheless, there are those who still argue that those who have been victimized, by their offenders who have served their time and or got their times cut short on good behavior and are now or can now get access to opportunity and resources, may still be reeling from that victimization, suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or some setbacks caused by the victimization of the crime and lack access and opportunity or worthwhile recovery of their loss. What actions are there to also improve or assist those who have suffer setbacks from crime/violence & how do we reconcile these detractions from the program? However, every crime or violent act cannot and must not be viewed in the general and must be taken on the merits of the particular crime. So, the program towards restoring an individual through the provision of resources requires a deeper understanding of incarcerations, victimization, relative deprivation, poverty, racism and discrimination, bad policing and new discoveries in legal matters and the law, rehabilitation, and also the preservation of society. So, towards the end of the episode, we brought back the interview we did earlier with Judge Sawyer who provided more details about the weakness of sentencing and the need for resourced-based sentencing and supervision. Finally, I concluded that we are reminded in scriptures, that all have sinned a have fallen short; there is not one that is righteous. So, we are all in need of restoration & forgiveness. Lest we forget the golden rule, do unto others what we want others to do unto us. Hence, we must be able to move beyond ourselves & situations in order to see the bigger picture then we can truly move to social action. Importantly, justice is not just about finding fault, but also restoring both the victim and the perpetrator as both goes hand in hand. Therefore, we cannot be selfish in our pity and victimization, but must move to forgiveness as we are reminded that judge not lest ye be judge, and no man is so pure that at any point he may find himself somewhere he was not before and requires the same mercy that he had once with-held when he was the hand that held the handle. This is the full (audio) episode to the series on The Sentencing Foundation. Today we feature a powerful story from Suavo Gonzales, an ex-offender on life-time parole. who is now a Pulitzer Prize Winner. Question, how many ex-offenders are there in Philadelphia alone? 275, 000, most of whom are Black/Brown peoples from communities ravished by poverty, low incomes and rising crime and violence. We did a podcast series on What's Life Like in Philadelphia, where many people suggested a fathers' movement as younger men are beset by crime/violence & are lacking responsible fathers. However, many fathers are incarcerated & the lack of resources for ex-offenders create further challenges in rehabilitation. Thus, the cycle of incarcerations from lack of fathers continues. However, judges are coming together to help with not just locking up offenders but creating a way that rehabilitates offenders; so, that they can re-enter society with resources to provide for themselves, their families and communities. Suavo, a former in-mate who is now on Parole, shares his powerful story, how his parole/re-entry in society was not easy, yet was able to access resources despite uncertainty/lack that has helped him to become an empowering figure to other parolees, a ghost-writer of several books and a Pulitzer Prize Winner of a successful podcast with a successful career at a college. Suavo was at the web launch and made a vital comment about the importance of the foundation that without opportunities then those coming back into society or people on a whole can't live responsible and effective lives advancing society. Therefore, the foundation plays a pivotal role in raising awareness about mass incarcerations and provide resources that help the Resource-Based Sentencing and Supervision to provide resources to in-mates, ex-offenders and parolees.  The series will feature one more powerful story from an ex-offender who is now running her own re-entry programs in Philadelphia. In addition, the series is an audio podcast series with two bonus episodes that feature the two stories from ex-offenders who shares how access to resources help them to overcome the odds and are now effective members of society working for change.  It is important to point out here, in relation to Suavo's statement about providing opportunity and its lack in society, Equal opportunity is an afront to inequality and advantage that some have and want to maintain. So, if providing opportunities means others will come up, then those who are ahead, which is the case in society, may be suspicious of the competition from the uprising based in opportunity and equal access, and may be slow to provide any opportunity and or may prefer to limit opportunity. So, it will be interesting to follow how this effort will take shape and whether it will find support in other communities/nationwide. We also feature the Directors of the Program and explore voting & political will. Today we share a brief excerpt of the Live Official Pres Conference by the Colorado Springs Law Enforcement and their District Attorney's and Mayor's office concerning the shooting at Nightclub Q, an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs. On November 19, 2022, a lone gunman entered the Nightclub and fired his gun into the nightclub. He entered the club shooting indiscriminately, killing five and injuring several, before two men, Thomas and Richard disabled the gunman and beating him to the ground. The suspect is currently recovering from injuries and is to be formally arrested and charged and taken in for questioning. according to Mr. Michael Allen, the District Attorney in Colorado reported. This shooting speaks to a wider and larger issue in society; the rise in extremism, and not just black-on-black violence stemming from poverty and other social decays, but there have been several incidents of violence in America aimed at certain groups based on a particular political, racial, ethnic or religious bias. Moreover, today, Russia is justifying their violence as a world saving mission because Putin believe that Ukraine seems to be taken on values that are anti-Russian and threatens their dominance and majority in the region. Hence, while we seek justice for the victims of this heinous attack, there are those who feel justified for their actions of violence. The suicide bombers who had hijacked the planes on 9/11 felt justified and believed that they were serving Allah and that virgins would meet them when they die. The January 6 insurrectionists believed that they were justified and within their rights to attack, with violence, the US capitol to usurp or protect their power which was a demonstration of their privilege. While the 18-year-old white male who used his AK-47 and gunned down 11 African Americans at a supermarket felt justified as he was entranced by white extremists' replacement ideology. This behavior is taken root, as people either seek to privilege a biased position or envy another's. This is the end of progress and continues the challenges we face as humanity. Until we learn that the ultimate of all things is that we become one reality in all of our individuality. I provide commentary on the shooting at the Nightclub with excerpts of the news conference and then provide an analysis in relation to a wider issue on extremism, Occidentalism, orientalism and the problem of power, position, status and how their strategies prose challenges for society and is the result of the dynamics that pertains in society today. I begin to raise these concepts in my new Book: Neoliberal Globalization Reconsidered, which will be out late December, early 2023, and this also provides a foundational and anecdotal basis to continue looking and studying power and the dynamics of human society. #ethnocentrism, #occidentalism #orientalism #bias and #privilege & challenges to progress within the #humanDymanics Rev. On the first part of the series, we got an interview with B-Dot a young man who frequents the Yahay's Conveinent Store in Germantown Philadelphia at the corner of Chelten and Chew. That was on September 29, 2022 that we conducted the interview inside the store. We attached the audio interview with him at the beginning of this bonus video podcast. Yesterday, October 11th, 2022, my producer and I were stopped at the store where we did the interview with him and noticed a placard on the store with pictures and people going up to write on the placard. I had just heard that a young man was shot and killed in the store, so I got out the car and went up to the store-wall with the placard and as I got closer I realized it was the same young man we interviewed just days ago who commented that Philly was dangerous but that he loved it in Philly and that to be safe we gotta stay to ourselves, know our company and stay around good people. It was quite shocking! while there we met two loved of his closest friends, a mother and daughter whose son/sibling was B-Dot's best friend. I asked this question so that you can engage this podcast dealing with John A Castro's suit against the FEC and Trump that challenges Trump's eligibility to run in the 2024 Presidential elections, based on his alleged involvement in the January 6 insurrection. This Podcast episode, which is done in video but can be listened to via audio, is broken up in three (3) segments. The first is the introduction where I briefly explore the story and several other issues in the news such as Liz Cheney losing her recent seat to a Donald Trump-backed candidate. The second segment is a video press release which John Castro had shared with me about his suit that he filed on July 25th, 2022, in D.C. in Federal court against Trump and the FEC. The video release is also available on his twitter page at "realjohnanthonycastro". In the final segment we share the one-and-a-half-hour interview I did with Mr. Castro via Zoom where we talked about his life, aspirations, upbringing, successes, challenges and dreams of becoming the next president. He also shared some breaking news about Trump and his involvement on January 6 and indicated that he would file this suit and explained why. It was a powerful interview that we had released in audio but did not release the video until now. It is unedited unlike the audio episode we did and does not include the respondents we had edited into the audio episode. The transcripts of the Interview can be accessed in my LinkedIn newsletter commentary "The Neoliberal Commentary" in LinkedIn or via "The Neoliberal Post" on Theneoliberal.com or renaldocmckenzie.com websites. Who is John Anthony Castro? John Anthony Castro is an International Tax Attorney, President of Castro and Company, and AI Tax, which was recently valued at over $180, 000, 000. He has two Law degrees from Georgetown Law and is hoping to be the next US President. He is a registered Republican but is a moderate that is open to liberal policies yet holding firm to his conservative values. Mr. Castro will tell you that he came from humble beginnings but today is a millionaire and successful businessman who has worked at all levels to protect, promote and improve America. Will he succeed in his aspirations, that is yet to be seen, but he has overcome the odds and is determined irrespective of the challenges. We will continue to follow his story and journey as we learn from another American who has turned and is turning the tides of life stacked against them so that we can make popular what was the monopoly for the benefit of all. "The Neoliberal Round" is created and hosted by Renaldo McKenzie, Doctoral candidate at Georgetown University, Graduate at University of Pennsylvania, Jamaica Theological Seminary and attended the University of the West Indies. Renaldo is author of Neoliberalism, Globalization, Income Inequality, Poverty and Resistance and will present at the AGLSP conference in San Antonio Texas October 10-12, 2022. Or wherever else you get your podcasts from.  Be sure to Listen, Rate, Review and Share! I know what you’re thinking: “Who the heck is Marcus Paladino?”  Well, he’s your cold-water king of surf photography. Through neoprene stiff fingers and frozen eyelids, Marcus is dedicated to capturing high-performance surfing on the west coast of Canada. He lives above 1/800th of a second, but isn’t afraid to slow things down. It’s sex, drugs and rock & roll, but also, it’s smooth jazz and a cup of tea. A habitual homebody just itching to get out of his comfort zone. Surfing is the reason he wakes up every morning.  He doesn’t matter. The endeavour of marathon swims in bone-chilling and heart-pounding conditions is irrelevant. What’s important to him lies in front of the lens. The split-second moments that most people don’t even know exist; capturing them forever instead of letting them pass by.  - Excerpt taken from www.marcuspaladino.com/about-marcus Connect with Marcus Paladino online at www.marcuspaladino.com, on Instagram at @marcuspaladino and on Facebook at @marcuspaladinophotography.  His film Waterspider can be viewed on Vimeo at https://vimeo.com/382856164 and Cold Comfort is available for pre-order and purchase on May 25, 2021 at Rocky Mountain Books.        This episode was recorded on April 15, 2021 and features coarse language.  Viewer discretion is advised. In this episode, Derik Hyatt interviews Jon Wayne…not the cowboy, but the Nerf gun wielding funny man and Instagram star Jonathan Wayne Freeman who has more in common with the Duke of Surfing, the Big Kahuna himself, Duke Kahanamoku.  That’s right, this middle-aged influencer has been making mediocrity excellent since 1979 and shakaing since 1985.  Some call him the saviour of surfing, the second coming of Bodhi from 1991’s Point Break.  Spawning from his comedic Instagram shorts, Surfer made this Kook of the Day the host of the Ultra Core Surf Hour, which JWF says is “about nothing, and everything – and surfing.”  Men’s Journal added him to the list of “12 Instagram Accounts Every Surfer Should Follow in 2020” while the Neighbourhood Watch added him to the list of “12 People Whom You Should Not Allow to Babysit Your Children.” (kidding!) Tune in to hear about JWF’s departure from being a paramedic and switch to becoming a full time Kook, how to become who you were meant to be, his comedic influences including Adam Sandler which leads to some rad Billy Madison impersonations, Pee Wee’s Playhouse, surfing of course, and last but not least, they explore the unknown elements of Canadian culture while JWL becomes devastated to learn that not all Canadians are clones of Bob and Doug McKenzie! Thanks to depictions like the 1987 hit film, Harry and the Hendersons, we tend to limit sasquatch sightings to the dense rainforest of the Pacific Northwest.  But with over 27.8 million hectares of forest in and around the Great Lakes, could this not make for a perfect Bigfoot vacation destination?  In this episode, Derik Hyatt deviates from the topic of surfing to investigate whether or not sasquatch might be watching you surf at those heavily wooded surf spots on the Great Lakes.  We chat with Olin Fruetel of Great Lake Sasquatch about Great Lakes sightings, his own personal experiences, common threads across encounters, the trauma and recovery process of seeing a sasquatch, surfing sasquatch and sasquatch theories, including the idea that sasquatch are waiting for COVID-19 to destroy the human race so that they may roam more freely!?!? During these somewhat dark COVID times, we can often be at risk of surrendering to the doom and gloom of isolation, boredom, and hopelessness; but in the spirit of Christmastime and the Holiday Season, allow yourself to be reminded by our youth that hope lies ahead in both the present and future.  In this episode, Derik Hyatt chats with Canadian female surfing prodigy, Mathea Olin.  Listen as this 17 year old pro surfer takes this 38 year old kook to school all hour long while she drops wisdom bombs about being yourself, keeping fun at the centre, inspiring others, staying stoked in trying times, training hard, loving what you do, having a growth mindset, and eating ice cream on the road to the Olympics. Mathea Olin was born on February 2, 2003 in Canmore, Alberta.  At six years old she and her family moved to Tofino, BC where she fell in love with surfing and began competing only four years later.  Her accolades include: winning Canada’s first ever international medals in surfing which included gold in longboard and bronze in shortboard at the 2017 Pan Am Surf Games; and bronze in longboard at the 2019 Pan Am Games.  Mathea’s aspirations include competing in the world Olympics and being the first Canadian to enter into the World Tour.  Keep your sights set on this Queen of the Peak; because as long as she froths for surf, she is bound to make Canadian Surfing Herstory! The CCB was incorporated by Letters Patent on May 10, 1950 and is a registered charity under the provisions of the Income Tax Act (Canada). The purpose of the CCB is to give people with vision loss a distinctive and unique perspective before governments.  CCB deals with the ongoing effects of vision loss by encouraging active living and rehabilitation through peer support and social and recreational activities.   CCB promotes measures to conserve sight, create a close relationship with the sighted community and provide employment opportunities. The CCB recognizes that vision loss has no boundaries with respect to gender, income, ethnicity, culture, other disabilities or age.  The CCB understands in many instances vision loss is preventable and sometimes is symptomatic of other health issues.  For the 21st century, the CCB is committed to an integrated proactive health approach for early detection to improve the quality of life for all Canadians. As the largest membership organization of the blind and partially sighted in Canada the CCB is the "Voice of the Blind™".  GTT is an exciting initiative of the Canadian Council of the Blind, founded in Ottawa in 2011 by Kim Kilpatrick and Ellen Goodman.  GTT aims to help people who are blind or have low vision in their exploration of low vision and blindness related access technology.  Through involvement with GTT participants can learn from and discuss assistive technology with others walking the same path of discovery.  GTT is made up of blindness related assistive technology users, and those who have an interest in using assistive technology designed to help blind and vision impaired people level the playing field.  GTT groups interact through social media, and periodically meet in-person or by teleconference to share their passions for assistive technology and to learn what others can offer from their individual perspectives.  CCB National Office 100-20 James Street Ottawa ON  K2P 0T6 Toll Free: 1-877-304-0968 Email: info@ccbnational.net URL: www.ccbnational.net
