Hi and welcome to the OWN IT podcast, where we celebrate the growing number of (women and non-binary) ad agency owners and talk about buying out of the boys' club of advertising, one agency at a time. Today, we're talking to Amanda Russell of Cream Studio. Her firm is based in Richmond, Virginia, and is a fantastic creative shop with specialties in 2D and 3D animation, illustration and design. They make magic come alive on screen for clients. It's not a surprising leap, then, to know that Amanda enjoys gaming. She plays Fortnite with her two children and husband. We actually connect that activity with some creative wisdom in our conversation. While we talk about the gender gap in advertising agency ownership here on own it, Amanda has a double whammy. She is a female owner in the animation studio space. My guess is the gender gap may be more pronounced there. Her ideas about how to handle that rare air and solve the gender gap are certainly valuable to consider. I so enjoyed talking with Amanda. You will enjoy listening. The two books Amanda referenced in the conversation were: How to Stand Up to a Dictator by Maria Ressa How to Win Friend and Influence People by Dale Carnegie Thanks for listening to this episode of OWN IT. You can find links to Amanda Russell's LinkedIn profile and Cream Studio's website in our show notes at untilyouownit.com. If you're enjoying Own It, please find it on your favorite podcast app and drop us a rating and review. Those help more people discover the show and join our community. Amanda Russell relates an amazing story of how she cuts through the clutter to surround herself with powerful business relationships. This is a graduate level class about networking strategy and gaining attention of thought leaders in a busy world. Some themes: Deep research on potential connections Creating value that cuts through the noise Continual effort to build on momentum Establishing a mutually-beneficial relationship Focus on the individual, not the ask Prioritizing follow up and follow through Establishing reciprocity The role of community Mark and Amanda also discuss the phenomenon of imposter syndrome. It seems to be everywhere but neither one of them has this condition. How do they approach scary new situations and ambiguity with confidence? Amanda Russell is a college educator at the University of Texas, author of The Influencer Code, and consultant on influencer marketing. Mark Schaefer is a strategy consultant, college educator, keynote speaker and the author of 10 books including "KNOWN" and "Marketing Rebellion." His annual marketing retreat is The Uprising.
Mark Schaefer and Amanda Russell both have globally-recognized brands but took drastically different routes regarding their self-promotion strategies. In this show, the co-hosts discuss their pitfalls and challenges, the need to evolve strategies over time, the limits of self-disclosure, being "on-brand," over-sharing, and more.
My guest today is Amanda Russell, an award-winning brand strategist, author, keynote speaker, Olympic-level runner and former model. She's a PhD who has taught at some of the top schools in the world, including Northwestern University - Kellogg School of Management, London Business School, Harvard Business School, The Wharton School and Stockholm Business School.Amanda is also an advisor to top global brands including Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. Cedars-Sinai International and Lionsgate and she speaks around the world on influence and the future of marketing. Her latest book, The Influencer Code is the official resource to influencer marketing for college programs worldwide. I invited Amanda to be a guest on my show to talk about influencer marketing. I wanted to learn what myths surround the term “influencer.” And I was curious to get her POV on the difference between attention and influence.

After spending 10 years over-working and burning out while building a credit card processing company into 38 states and a networking events company for over 30,000 people (which she later sold), she learned the wrong way to do it, and then discovered that there was a better way. Darrah Brustein has both inspired and influenced millions to reach higher and dream bigger. Having worked with Shaq, Deepak Chopra, Seth Godin, Bobbi Brown, Jillian Michaels, Adam Grant, Robert Herjavec, Nastia Liukin, Cam Newton, and the list goes on as well as brands like Chase, Visa, Toyota and FedEx, she digs into what it takes to build true influence, and it has nothing to do with 'following a passion' or taking great Instagram photos. This is the basis of what customer experience marketing is all about, and today we have the world's leading expert on the subject, Dan Gingiss, who just wrote the definitive book on the subject, The Experience Maker. In our conversation we take customer experience marketing one step further to unpack the natural intersection it has with influencer marketing, and how companies can begin to treat their customers as influencers and encourage them to incite word-of-mouth marketing.
