“Just showing up and posting increases your visibility, as Instagram favors accounts that post often and engage with their audience,” explains co-host Amy Alexander. It's easy to underestimate the value of small changes, but sometimes the smallest change can make a huge impact. Many people in midlife have the goal of getting more involved with social media. This can be challenging, especially for midlifers who may be less familiar with platforms like LinkedIn and Instagram. In today's episode, hosts Denyse and Amy talk about the power of small changes as Amy shares three actionable tips for improving your business' social media presence.    Amy starts off reading a few excerpts from Atomic Habits, a self-help book by James Clear that discusses the impact of micro habits. She explains that many of her clients desire to be more active on social media, but just don't know where to begin. Using the concepts of building micro habits and the benefits of small changes over time, Amy and Denyse talk about how to become more comfortable with social media and Amy shares three tips for getting started. These tips are to post consistently, be your authentic self at all times, and interact with your audience.    If you're looking to use social media to promote yourself or your business, try these three actionable tips to start. Remember that even the smallest 1% change can make a huge difference in the long run. And by making small changes and building micro habits, you can improve your confidence on social media while building trust and relationships with your target audience.   Quotes “Improving by 1% isn't necessarily particularly notable. Sometimes, it isn't even noticeable. But it can be far more meaningful, especially in the long run.” (5:47-5:58 | Amy reading from James Clear's book Atomic Habits) “Just showing up and posting increases your visibility. And Instagram favors accounts that post often and engage with their audience.” (21:28-21:36 | Amy) “People connect with people. They don't connect with a logo.” (31:43-31:46 | Amy) “Talk to your audience. This is the secret sauce. Make an effort to reply to every comment or DM.” (32:07-32:15 | Amy) “If my clients are stuck, or they don't know what to write, or they're feeling impostor syndrome, repost an article.” (39:30-39:35 | Denyse)    Links:   Think Like Instagram Webinar: https://youtu.be/Ua6bNoV3mlw Think Like Instagram Course: https://www.a2salesandmarketing.com/group-coaching use code Midlife25 at checkout to save $25. This week Lele and Kathy sit down with Connia Nelson and Amy Alexander to talk about taking an active role working towards racial harmony. Amy gives insight into her experience with interracial marriage, friends refusing to come to her wedding, and raising her kids in a world of injustice. Connia speaks to her life as a black female and the racism she has faced in her life, and the impact of 2020. These conversations are important, vitally important if we want to create a better future for our children and for future generations. The questions Connia poses for listeners to focus on: What kind of relationships do you have in your life? Do you have a diverse set of friends? Do you have people who understand your heart, who lean in with you, who learn and grow with you? Amy provides us with 5 quick tips to approaching racial reconciliation conversations: First, be curious about someone's story. Approach those conversations with humility, compassion, and curiosity. Second, approach the conversations with humility. Be a lifelong learner. Third, be aware of your blindspots--what you are completely unaware of. Fourth, check your intentions. Where is this coming from? Finally, be intentional about micro-affirmations. Small gestures on a daily basis that foster inclusion, listening, and comfort to those who may feel invisible in an environment. Invite them in and make the space for them to be heard. Both women speak into educating their own children, but also educating our children. They advise to start the conversations early, and acknowledge differences early--in a way that shows dignity and respect. Model for your kids respect and appreciation for others, as well as modeling empathy for them. Show them how to be curiosity and intentionally invite diversity into your home. Teach your children not to let others label them, show them who they are in Christ. We are commanded to love others as God does, so let us go into this week teaching our children to do that, and challenging ourselves to do it as well. "Before you take a stand, take a seat", what does it mean to you?

Chef Steven sits down with his wise friend Amy Alexander, Executive Director of The Refuge Center for Counseling, for a rich conversation about boundaries, pace, self-knowledge, and even what it was like living in an abandoned nightclub among gangs in South Central Los Angeles in her early 20s.  There are SO many interesting stories and practical takeaways in this episode. The Refuge Center for Counseling opened in December 2005 as the vision of its founders Amy Alexander and Jennifer Gillett. Amy and Jennifer had a strong desire to serve their area of residence —Williamson County, TN —which is recognized for its wealth, oftentimes overshadowing those who are in need. To live among great prosperity and to be in need is often to feel invisible. The Refuge Center's mission was clear from the beginning—to offer affordable, professional counseling services in order to empower, educate and support individuals, couples and families in need.  Recorded July 13, 2019 at The Kindred Farm studio. Produced by Amy Parman. Setting Healthy Boundaries in the Workplace   WHAT WE HEARD: Amy Alexander is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of The Refuge Center for Counseling. Amy is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who has been practicing for sixteen years. Her areas of clinical focus include trauma, domestic and sexual violence, grief and loss and identity work. It was ongoing Christian counseling and opportunities to serve on mission (both nationally and abroad) throughout adolescence, that solidified the faith that she placed in Christ as a child.  SIDE BAR:Studies have indicated and proved that young adults who remain close to Christ in college and beyond are those who had consistent adults investing in their lives throughout their teen years and opportunities to serve and lead.  At the Refuge Center for Counseling, Amy seeks to serve people in all walks of life at all points of crisis. The vision of the Refuge Center was to be a systemic organization and allow all members of the family to receive help at one location. Rather than the sterile work environment provided at other sliding-scale, non-profit mental health providers, the Refuge Center committed themselves to providing an aesthetically and technologically advanced center. Amy credits the Lord for sustaining that vision. It’s the Refuge Center’s commitment to provide depth of ministry and complete trust in God to provide the rest, that makes the greatest difference.    WHAT IT MEANS: At any given time, we all have 3-4 blindspots, things in life that are present but not visible to us. We need professionals in our lives to point out those issues so that we can live at optimal health. For men who are averse to seeking mental health support, it’s easier to point out that we see a dentist for things we can’t see, prevent, or fix ourselves. We take our car to auto repair shops for the same thing. People, particularly men, need to know that seeking emotional and mental health support is the same (necessary) thing. Which requires us to have sympathy and empathy for our peers.   Sympathy is noticing someone is in a hole and offering condolences and consideration. Empathy is climbing down in the hole with them to offer emotional support and togetherness. Warning signs for men include anxiety, anger, power and control among others that a man is struggling and needs help. When someone points out the blindspot or we begin to see the warning signs, additional help is necessary and available.   Switching gears, it’s not just individuals that can be healthy or experience hiccups. Organizational cultures can experience the same thing. Organizations heavy on relationships can suffer because teams don’t have the hard conversations. Work environments heavy on outcomes can suffer because teams don’t see or truly value one another. One of the indicators of a healthy culture is brave apologies, where high tier leaders make bold private and sometimes public apologies recognizing moments of weakness or failure within the organization and the effects on people. Knowing that God (and also others) can do things without us may be an ego killer, but it’s a consideration of overall health.    WHAT TO DO NEXT: Take an inventory. Who is speaking into your life and making investments to help you be the best you can be. You need 4-7 non-family members who can do that. Who are your spiritual leaders? What is your church attendance and participation like? What are your go-to podcasts? How are you being spiritually renewed through scripture, music, sermons and reflection? It’s not enough to “set it and forget it” and avoiding challenges won’t eliminate them. Scripture is clear. Love matters more than results. It matters more than accolades and accomplishments. Figuring out a way to prioritize living in a way that illustrates love is worth the emotional/mental health work it will take to operate from that place.    MLN BOOK RECOMMENDATION: Boundaries by Dr. Henry Cloud & Dr. John Townsend   To regain control of your life, you’ve never needed Boundaries more than you do today in today’s always-on, always-connected digital world. Drs. Henry Cloud and John Townsend wrote the New York Times bestselling book on Boundaries – the personal property lines that...(learn more)
