Tigers hit 4 home runs in 5-4 win over Angels – Thursday Morning Sports Update

MLB – Major League Baseball Yesterday Detroit Tigers 5, Los Angeles Angels 4 Chicago White Sox 9, Seattle Mariners 6 Cincinnati Reds 7, Chicago Cubs 1 Tigers 5, Angels 4 – Ohtani, Trout homer again, but Tigers rally past Angels 5-4 Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout homered in the same game for the eighth time this season during the Los Angeles Angels’ 5-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers. Rookies Kerry Carpenter and Ryan Kreidler hit back-to-back homers in the ninth inning for Detroit off Jose Quijada. Eric Haase went 5 for 5 with a homer and two doubles in the majors’ 12th five-hit game of the season, and former No. 1 overall draft pick Spencer Torkelson hit his first homer since July 3. Trout homered in the fifth and Ohtani homered in the seventh, but the Angels’ bullpen blew the win. White Sox 9, Mariners 6 – White Sox take advantage of Mariners’ miscues for 9-6 win Eloy Jiménez drove in three runs with a homer and double, Chicago took advantage of three errors, and the White Sox rallied to beat the Seattle Mariners 9-6. The White Sox took two of three in the series and stayed on the heels of Cleveland and Minnesota in the crowded AL Central race. It looked early like it would be a series loss for the White Sox as Seattle starter Luis Castillo tied an American League record by striking out the first seven batters to start the game. But Castillo gave up Jiménez’s homer and couldn’t get through the sixth inning. Reds 7, Cubs 1 – Aquino hits 2 home runs, Reds beat Cubs 7-1 Aristides Aquino hit two more home runs against the Cubs and helped the Cincinnati Reds pull away from Chicago 7-1. Mike Minor, pitching at Wrigley Field for the first time since 2014 with Atlanta, gave up 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings but just one run. The 34-year-old lefty is 3-0 in his last four starts after losing a career-worst eight straight decisions. The Cubs hit into three double plays and lost for the fourth time in five games. Aquino has hit 12 homers in 84 career at-bats against the Cubs. Today Cincinnati (Cessa 3-2) at Chicago Cubs (Sampson 1-5), 2:20 p.m. Chicago White Sox (Cease 13-6) at Oakland (Sears 5-1), 9:40 p.m. Tigers are off MLB – Major League Baseball Players Association joins AFL-CIO The Major League Baseball Players Association is joining the AFL-CIO. Executive director Tony Clark made the announcement alongside AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler at the National Press Club in Washington. The move comes as the MLBPA is attempting to unionize minor leaguers and in the aftermath of a nearly 100-day lockout that delayed the start of the season. Shuler called it an incredible moment for the labor movement. Clark says baseball players want to strengthen their organization by supporting minor leaguers and becoming part of the AFL-CIO. NFL – National Football League – Week 1 Tonight Buffalo Bills at Los Angeles Rams, 8:20 p.m. NFL – Fields hopes offseason work leads to jump for him, Bears Quarterback Justin Fields is embracing his leadership role with the Chicago Bears. And he hopes the work he and his teammates put in during the offseason leads to a big payoff for a team that struggled last season. The Bears host San Francisco in the season opener this week and all eyes will be on Fields. He comes into his second season trying to convince new general manager Ryan Poles and first-year coach Matt Eberflus he is the right person to solidify a position that has haunted the team for a big part of their history. A strong showing against a dominant defense that helped lead San Francisco to the NFC championship game last season would be a good way to start. NFL – Soldier Field gets new grass for Bears’ opener against 49ers The Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers will be playing on new turf when they open the season at Soldier Field. Bermuda grass was installed this week at the lakefront stadium instead of the stadium’s traditional Kentucky bluegrass. The Bears hope that leads to fewer issues with a surface that has long been a source of frustration for their own players and coaches as well as opponents. Coach Matt Eberflus had input in the switch and welcomes the change. WNBA – WNBA Playoffs – WNBA Semifinals (best of 5) Tonight Connecticut Sun at Chicago Sky, 8:00 p.m.                                  (Series tied 2-2) WNBA – A’ja Wilson earns WNBA MVP honors for 2nd time A’ja Wilson has earned WNBA MVP honors for the second time in her young career. The 26-year-old Las Vegas Aces forward received 31 of 56 first-place votes from a media panel. Seattle forward Breanna Stewart was second, garnering 23 first-place votes and finishing 32 points behind Wilson, who had 478 points. Wilson also won the award in 2020 and is the seventh player to win the award more than once. The award was announced one day after Wilson helped the Aces reach the WNBA Finals by knocking out Stewart and the Storm. Wilson also earned Defensive Player of the Year honors this year. NCAAFB – No. 14 Michigan State aiming for consistency against Akron No. 14 Michigan State, missing two key players on defense, is aiming for consistency against Akron after an uneven, season-opening win over Western Michigan. Spartans coach Mel Tucker said his team is super motivated and has a lot to prove on the field Saturday. The Zips are coming off an overtime victory over St. Francis of Pennsylvania. They are looking to start out 2-0 for the first time since 2018, which is the last time they beat a Power Five team at Northwestern. This is the first matchup between the schools since 1914. NCAAFB – Beat-up Buchner ready to show Irish what he learned in loss Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner started with a flurry last weekend. Then he followed the script. The sophomore impressed first-year coach Marcus Freeman with a poised performance in a season-opening 21-10 loss at No. 2 Ohio State. On Saturday, in a less daunting matchup against Marshall, Buchner will get to show everyone what he learned from his first big test. And Freeman believes big things are on the horizon for the former prep star from Southern California. Tennis – US Open – Tiafoe 1st US man in US Open semifinals since Roddick in ’06 Frances Tiafoe has become the first American man to reach the U.S. Open semifinals since 2006. The 24-year-old Tiafoe beat Andrey Rublev 7-6 (3), 7-6 (0), 6-4 on Wednesday while being backed by a boisterous partisan crowd in Arthur Ashe Stadium. Tiafoe is seeded No. 22 and his first career semifinal at any Grand Slam tournament will come Friday against No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz or No. 11 Jannik Sinner. Tiafoe played aggressive tennis and used 18 aces along with strong net play to oust No. 9 Rublev, a Russian who dropped to 0-6 in major quarterfinals. No. 1 Iga Swiatek and No. 6 Aryna Sabalenka reached the women’s semifinals. NHL – Canadiens sign Dach to 4-year, $13.45 million deal Kirby Dach has agreed to a four-year, $13.45 million contract with the Montreal Canadiens. The 21-year-old center, who was a restricted free agent, had 26 points (nine goals, 17 assists) in 70 games with the Chicago Blackhawks last season. In a corresponding move to get under the NHL’s offseason salary cap, Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes told reporters star goaltender Carey Price would be put on long-term injured reserve. The 35-year-old played just five games last season because of a knee injury after leading Montreal to a berth in the 2021 Stanley Cup Final. NASCAR – NASCAR  calls car fires ‘unacceptable’ after Harvick inferno NASCAR is investigating a spate of car fires that left one championship contender fuming after his Ford erupted into an inferno during the opening playoff race. Kevin Harvick lashed out at NASCAR and the new Next Gen car after it inexplicably caught fire in the playoff opener at Darlington Raceway. The car fire dropped Harvick to last in the 16-driver playoff field. Headed into Sunday’s race at Kansas Speedway, NASCAR has ordered some safety changes as it attempts to address the fires. A NASCAR official said “it’s unacceptable for the cars to catch on fire." Wesneski retired 13 of the first 14 batters. Today Detroit (Hutchison 2-7) at L.A. The union’s deputy executive director sent a letter to MLB claiming a majority of minor leaguers signed authorization cards. The MLBPA launched the minor league unionization drive on Aug. 28. Players with minor league contracts earn as little as $400 weekly during the six-month season. They would become their own bargaining unit within the MLBPA. WNBA – WNBA Playoffs – WNBA Semifinals (best of 5) Last Night Connecticut Sun 104, Chicago Sky 80                                        (Series tied 2-2) Las Vegas Aces 97, Seattle Storm 92                                          (LVA wins 3-1) Sun 107, Sky 80 – Sun rout Sky 104-80, force Game 5 in semifinals series DeWanna Bonner and Courtney Williams each scored 19 points to help the Connecticut Sun rout the Chicago Sky 104-80 and force a decisive Game 5 in their WNBA playoff semifinal series. Alyssa Thomas added 17 for Connecticut, which will travel to the second-seeded Sky for the winner-take-all game on Thursday. Connecticut raced out to a 22-6 lead and never looked back. Kahleah Copper scored 16 points and Emma Meesseman added 14 for the Sky. Aces 97, Storm 92 – Sue Bird’s career ends as Aces top Storm to reach to Finals Sue Bird’s career came to an end as Chelsea Gray scored 15 of her 31 points in the fourth quarter, and the Las Vegas Aces advanced to the WNBA Finals with a 97-92 win over the Seattle Storm in Game 4 of their semifinal series. The Aces won the best-of-five series 3-1, all the games tense, pressure-packed and filled with spectacular shot-making. The Aces ended up making more, most notably Gray, who made five of six shots down the stretch and scored 12 of the final 20 points for the Aces. It will be the third Finals appearance in franchise history for Las Vegas. NCAAFB – Georgia moves up to No. 2, passing Ohio State Georgia moved up to No. 2 in the first Associated Press college football poll of the regular season. The Bulldogs passed Ohio State after the defending national champions dominated their opener. Alabama remained No. 1 in the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank, receiving 44 of 63 first-place votes. The Bulldogs narrowed the gap on the Crimson Tide after beating Oregon 49-3. Georgia received 17 first-place votes. Ohio State slipped to No. 3 and received two first-place votes. Michigan moved up four spots to No. 4. Clemson dropped one place to No. 5. Florida debuted at No. 12 after its thrilling victory at home against Utah. The Utes slipped six spots to No. 13 after the loss. Oregon’s loss to Georgia sent the Ducks all the way out of the rankings. NCAAFB – LSU addressing a slew of miscues after Kelly’s debut LSU has emerged from Brian Kelly’s coaching debut trying to address a slew of miscues which proved costly in a narrow loss to Florida State. Kelly says receiver Kayshon Boutte is the least of his offense’s concerns despite making just two catches for 20 yards without scoring. He says Boutte has high standards and was unhappy during the game. But Kelly asserts Boutte will have “great games” this season. Kelly cites blocking and special teams among areas needing improvement after LSU struggled to run the ball, muffed two punts and had two kicks blocked. But Kelly says LSU also showed grit and character while nearly erasing a late two-touchdown deficit. The Tigers host Southern on Saturday. NCAAFB – Big Ten – Big Ten punters just keep turning up from down under Half of the Big Ten’s 14 teams this season have a punter produced by Prokick Australia. The development academy down under has been supplying major college football programs with game-ready special teamers at a remarkable rate. Purdue’s Jack Ansell, Minnesota’s Mark Crawford, Rutgers’ Adam Korsak, Ohio State’s Jesse Mirco, Illinois’ Hugh Robertson and Iowa’s Tory Taylor are all from Australia. Indiana’s James Evans is a New Zealander. Prokick has landed full scholarships for 190 players and counting. It was founded in 2007 by Nathan Chapman after a brief experience in the NFL. NFL – Bears release renderings for enclosed suburban stadium The Chicago Bears plan to build an enclosed suburban stadium that could host Super Bowls, College Football Playoff games and Final Fours. The Bears released conceptual illustrations of the proposed stadium and entertainment complex that would be built on the site of a former horse racing track in Arlington Heights, Illinois. The Bears say the project could include restaurants, office space, a hotel, fitness center, new parks and open areas. They also say they would seek no public funding for the stadium if the sale of the property is completed and if they decide to move there. But they would seek taxpayer assistance for the rest of the project.           NFL – NFL features record-tying 10 new head coaches There will be a new look on the sideline in Week 1 of the NFL season with a record-tying 10 new head coaches across the league. The overhaul of nearly one-third of the league matches the previous high last reached 2006. The new crop includes five retreads looking to bounce back after getting fired from their last head-coaching job and five first-time coaches. They take over varying situations with Tampa Bay’s Todd Bowles and Las Vegas’ Josh McDaniels taking over 2021 playoff teams in their second chances, while others like Chicago’s Matt Eberflus and Brian Daboll of the Giants in rebuilding situations.           Golf – PGA/LIV – Horschel, Rahm unhappy at LIV golfers playing at Wentworth Golfers from the Saudi-backed breakaway series have faced strong criticism for choosing to play the BMW PGA Championship on the European tour this week. The main targets of the criticism were those LIV Golf players who are in the field at Wentworth because of their ranking in the top 60 and are seemingly chasing ranking points not currently available on the breakaway tour. Billy Horschel is the defending champion from the United States and called the players in question “hypocrites.” Jon Rahm accused them of displaying double standards. Tennis – US Open – Khachanov stops Kyrgios in 5 sets; faces Ruud in semifinals Karen Khachanov has advanced to the first Grand Slam semifinal of his career by edging Nick Kyrgios 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, 6-7 (3), 6-4 at the U.S. Open. Kyrgios could not quite follow up his victory over defending champion Daniil Medvedev. The match began Tuesday night and concluded after midnight on Wednesday at a rowdy Arthur Ashe Stadium. The No. 27-seeded Khachanov will face No. 5 Casper Ruud on Friday for a berth in the championship match. Tennis – US Open – Garcia, 28, tops Gauff, 18, at US Open for 1st Slam semi Caroline Garcia has beaten 18-year-old American Coco Gauff 6-3, 6-4 at the U.S. Open to reach her first Grand Slam semifinal at age 28. The 17th-seeded Garcia had lost both of her two previous matches against the 12th-seeded Gauff but was the better player in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Tuesday night. The Frenchwoman stretched her winning streak to 13 matches and solidified her status as someone playing as well as anyone in women’s tennis at the moment. Garcia has not dropped a set at Flushing Meadows this year. She finished last year ranked 74th but is projected to rise into the top 10 next week. Garcia will face Wimbledon runner-up Ons Jabeur next. USA Soccer – U.S. Soccer, players formally sign equal pay agreements Representatives for the men’s and women’s U.S. national teams signed their historic collective bargaining agreements with U.S. Soccer, formally closing a long and acrimonious fight over equal pay. The federation announced in May that it had struck separate agreements with the players’ unions on contracts that run through 2028. A signing ceremony was held following the women’s friendly match against Nigeria at Audi Field in Washington D.C., with U.S. Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh among those on hand. The new contracts include identical pay structures for appearances and tournament victories, revenue sharing and equitable distribution of World Cup prize money. Olympics – Tokyo Olympics sponsorship scandal widens with more arrests Bribery allegations against a former Tokyo Olympics organizing committee member are widening as Japanese prosecutors “re-arrested” Haruyuki Takahashi in a case involving suspected payments from a publisher which became a sponsor for the Games. The latest allegations center on 76 million yen — about $540,000 — Takahashi received from publishing company Kadokawa, according to Tokyo District prosecutors. Two Kadokawa officials have been arrested for allegedly paying bribes. Takahashi has been in detention since he was arrested last month for receiving bribes from clothing manufacturer Aoki Holdings. He was also formally charged Tuesday with receiving bribes from Aoki. Three Aoki officials were also charged. Open. Mail me dan: info@jornluka.com. Dank jullie wel voor jullie steun. Jullie maken The Trueman Show en onze tours mogelijk!

Chicago scored in the fifth after Adam Engel’s two-out popup was blown from the middle of the infield into foul territory behind third base. Moritz Seider, Adam Erne and Filip Zadina scored for Detroit. The Red Wings were recently eliminated from the postseason chase for the sixth straight year, but managed to push past the Metropolitan Division-leading Hurricanes despite being outplayed much of the way. Nedeljkovic had a strong run for the Hurricanes last season but the team traded him to Detroit in July and opted to reshape their goaltender position by bringing in Antti Raanta and Frederik Andersen. Nedeljkovic had his third shutout of the season. Elliott started in all 16 games during the 2020 season and all six he played in last year. He has 106 career tackles, including 3 1/2 sacks, two forced fumbles, and an interception. Baltimore drafted the former Texas standout in the sixth round four years ago. USFL – New USFL hoping to succeed where other spring leagues failed The USFL kicks off Saturday night in Birmingham, Alabama, when the New Jersey Generals face the Birmingham Stallions. Fox and NBC Sports will each carry 22 games, including Saturday’s opener. It’s the first time since the 2007 regular-season finale between the New England Patriots and New York Giants that a game will air on more than one broadcast network. Fox Sports owns the USFL and is making a $150 million investment over three years. The only similarity between the USFL of the 1980s and this one is the team names. USFL – United States Football League Sunday All games in Birmingham, AL Houston Gamblers vs. Michigan Panthers, 12:00 p.m. NCAAFB – Michigan State searching for Walker replacements this spring Michigan State leaned on Kenneth Walker III a lot during its turnaround season, handing him the ball 22 times a game with a much success. This spring and in the fall someone else will need to run the ball for the Spartans because Walker skipped his senior season to enter the NFL draft. The top candidates for the role may be a mystery until the season starts Sept. 2 against Western Michigan. The lack of healthy offensive linemen has led coach Mel Tucker choosing to have a practice instead of a game Saturday at Spartan Stadium. Detroit announced the move Thursday, potentially adding a starter in the secondary. The Lions are hoping Elliott’s injuries are behind him. He missed 10 games last season with a torn biceps’pectoral injury and also missed his entire rookie year in 2018 with the Baltimore Ravens. MLB – Major League Baseball Yesterday Detroit Tigers 4, Kansas City Royals 2 Seattle Mariners 5, Chicago White Sox 1 Chicago Cubs 5, Colorado Rockies 2 Tigers 4, Royals 2 – Reyes, Meadows drive in runs in 7th, Tigers beat Royals 4-2 Victor Reyes and Austin Meadows had RBI singles in the seventh inning, and the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2. With the game tied 2-2, pinch-hitter Eric Haase hit the first of three straight two-out singles off reliever Jake Brentz, followed by Reyes and Meadows. Miguel Cabrera had three of the Tigers’ nine hits, leaving him six shy of 3,000 for his career. All of Detroit’s hits were singles. Joe Jimenez pitched a scoreless sixth, one of four Tigers relievers who combined to allow only one walk among the final 13 Kansas City batters. Gregory Soto worked the ninth for his second save. Mariners 5, White Sox 1 – Popups become adventures as Mariners beat White Sox 5-1 Jared Kelenic hit a two-run homer off the right-field foul pole in the second inning, and the Seattle Mariners stopped a four-game losing streak with a 5-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on a windy Thursday when popups became adventures. Chicago scored in the fifth after Adam Engel’s two-out popup was blown from the middle of the infield into foul territory behind third base. Engel reached second when his popup to the first-base side kicked off the mitt of catcher Cal Raleigh for an error. Jake Burger followed with a popup that fell for an RBI single. Cubs 5, Rockies 2 – Suzuki extends hit streak to 6, Cubs down Bryant, Rox 5-2 Seiya Suzuki stayed hot with an RBI double in a three-run first inning, Frank Schwindel homered and drove in two, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Colorado Rockies 5-2. Suzuki extended his hitting streak to six games since joining the majors from Japan and drove in his 10th run when the Cubs collected five straight hits against Kyle Freeland. Kris Bryant went 2 for 5 as the Rockies had their four-game winning streak snapped in the opener of Bryant’s second series against his former team. Bryant was traded by the Cubs to San Francisco last season and signed with the Rockies after the lockout. It’s late on the East Coast, semi late here in Minnesota and the College Football Playoff game is still going on as I sit down and blast out this episode. This is Short Time Shots, a mostly daily look at the scores and more from in and around the sport of wrestling, I’m Jason Bryant, and since there were no scores tonight, the show is about the “more,” today. Back home from Virginia and the 40th annual Virginia Duals. I’ve been to 24 and that tournament holds a special place in my heart. One of the more heart-wrenching moments came in the ODU-Virginia dual where Killian Cardinale, the starter for ODU, which as you know, is my alma mater, wrestled Patrick McCormick, a four-time state champion from my hometown of Poquoson and the son of one of my good friends, NCAA wrestling official Mike McCormick. I once had a similar instance where Bryan LaShomb of ODU wrestled Anthony Burke of UVA in a dual meet. That time, I was announcing. Burke was in my sister’s graduating class back in 2004, and I’d known him since he was in middle school. With Patch, who I gave a little local shout out to at the Midlands, I’d known him since birth. It’s one of those cool things that when you go to the Virginia Duals and see that type of matchup with both ODU and UVA coming from where they were about 15 years ago, it’s cool. Almost all those Virginia college teams are better than they were 15 years ago. Obviously Virginia Tech has carried the flag and George Mason will be improving under Frank Beasley. Now the Commonwealth added two Division III schools last week with Roanoke College and Emory & Henry. Let’s hope we aren’t adding too many teams, too fast, though. Strategery, right?  In Duals: In case you missed it, we had a number of dual events that went on this past weekend. In Williamsport, Pennsylvania, The College of New Jersey won the 20th annual Budd Whitehill Duals hosted by Lycoming College. In Hampton, Virginia, Rider won the National College Division, beating No. 22 Virginia, while Division II Kutztown downed Division III Ferrum in the finals for the second straight year.  In Louisville, at the 2020 U.S. Marine Corps NWCA Multi-Division National Dual Meet Championships presented by ARMS Software and Defense Soap hosted by NUWAY … St. Cloud State, Wartburg, Grand View, Nassau, McKendree and Menlo were all winners in their respective divisions. St. Cloud State extended its D2 win streak to 58 and won its fourth in a row. Wartburg won its 12th overall title and beat three national champions in their win over Augsburg in the final in Division III. Grand View’s win streak is now 85 after they lost three individual bouts in four duals to capture a ninth-straight title. The NJCAA featured eight non-scholarship teams, which was won by Nassau. It was Nassau’s third title but first since 2005. The women’s division split this year into NCAA and NAIA divisions. McKendree beat Simon Fraser on criteria in the NCAA Division, while Menlo beat Campbellsville to win the NAIA crown. By the way, while Sara Koenig, one of the tournament directors for the Super 32 awesomely pointed out the last time UNC women’s field hockey lost in response to TV pimping Clemson’s 742 days without a loss. Well, the Heels last lost 787 days ago. St. Cloud State last lost 1,094 days ago and Grand View’s last loss was 2,258 days ago.  You noticed I said non-scholarship with the NJCAA portion of the National Duals. You’d be quite punctilious in assuming that, well in Miami, Oklahoma, Clackamas won the NJCAA Coaches Duals by beating Iowa Western 38-15 in the finals. This was basically a national duals for the scholarship division. Clackamas beat Iowa Lakes, top-ranked but fourth-seeded Western Wyoming, Colby and Iowa Western on the weekend. Iowa Central beat host Northeastern Oklahoma A&M for third.  Notables on the Docket: Division II Ohio Valley is at Division III Muskingum, while we’ve got another split dual as Division III Muhlenberg will face Division II East Stroudsburg.  An allotment of matches involving NAIA schools on Tuesday. Central Baptist will head to Calumet College of St. Joseph – that’s in Indiana if you’re wondering – Ancilla of the NJCAA will also join the fun. Thomas More is at Midway, Lincoln continues its maiden voyage into the NAIA with a dual at Missouri Baptist. Fact: Missouri Baptist head coach Brian Jackson was a three-time All-American in three different divisions. Bluefield wrestles Southwest Virginia in Richlands, Virginia, while Benedictine (Kan.) will take on William Penn. NAIA Central Christian will face Cloud County in Concordia, Kansas.  And that’s all I’ve got at the time being. Coker and Newberry were postponed until next month.  FROM THE DWN: I brought my newspaper background into wrestling more than 20 years ago. One of those things I used to feature back on InterMat was the weekly “How the Top 25 fared.” It was something that ran on the agate wire on Sunday nights for the Monday paper and the Top 25 AP poll release. I just brought it back, mainly as an aide for the coaches poll. Figured if I’m doing it, I might has well post it.  Despite Duke’s tough season thus far, there is at least some news coming out of Durham. Former wrestling SID Meredeith Rieder features Mason Eaglin, a freshman from Port Orchard, Washington – the same hometown as three-time All-American Conner Hartmann. With five of the six ACC teams ranked, maybe Duke can finally reward its wrestlers with some scholarship opportunities. Minnesota recaps the return of The Beast Brock Lesnar. The past NCAA champion returned to Minneapolis on Friday as part of the 20th anniversary of his individual title. The Gophers beat Wisconsin, who would later beat Nebraska. USA Wrestling announced it would be holding wrestle-offs for the Pan American Olympic qualifiers in women’s freestyle during the WCWA championships next month in Georgia – the state, not the country. Now this is what’s going to make things interesting – when will they announce the wrestle-offs for the other styles. And yes, you know I mean men’s freestyle. Credit on that to Bloodround.  Campbell’s Jason Williams, a vet in the world of Sports Information, writes up a pretty solid feature on the Camels’ 2-1 weekend in Arizona in a quad at Chase Field in Phoenix. The Camel that is Campbell’s mascot is named Gaylord – after famous alum Gaylord Perry. Among the stories from the local news, I’ll key in on The Winchester Star’s feature of Sherando High School senior Colton Foltz. Same high school as Virginia Tech heavyweight John Borst, which is cool. Coached by Brian Kibler, who wrestled at Strasburg, which according to Earl Smith of The Open Mat, isn’t cool. Let’s remember, Earl went to Manassas Park. Yes, let the hate flow! Anyway, little local Q&A.  On The Network The newest show to the network, Forward, has been released. This is with Wisconsin Wrestling Federation state coach Scott Kluever  and River Falls High School head coach and longtime women’s wrestling coach Kevin Black.

Elton John sang something about Saturday night. I’m just trying not to get my butt kicked by my wife in Dr. Mario yet again. This is Short Time Shots for November 18, 2017. I’m Jason Bryant and spent the day over at Augsburg UNIVERSITY. Sorry Kyle Simmons, that is NOT a pun. Before I begin this monologue, I want to explain one thing about this particular version of the show. If I don’t get to a score, it’s because there was too much stuff to talk about. The point of this is to be short, not analyze every single dual that comes out. If it’s notable, and I’m not being lazy, it’ll make the show. Best way to make the show? Schedule duals for Tuesdays, there’s not much going on then. Now, dual-meet wise, it was slow in Division I, however Kerry McCoy’s Maryland Terrapins went west and beat No. 21 Stanford 18-15. McCoy spent time in Palo Alto as the Cardinal head coach prior to coming to Maryland, so he knows the landscape well. Saturday’s however, was OUTSIDE. Yes, Maryland’s wrestled TWO outdoor duals this year. Swing match at the dual came at heavyweight where Youssif Hemida topped Nathan Butler 3-1 to give the Terps the win. Maryland was put in a position to win when Brandon Cray. Wait, WHO? Beat All-American Connor Schram 8-7 at 125. Who the heck is Brandon Cray. A pretty solid kid out of New Jersey who went 26-7 during his redshirt year. Stanford surely to drop out of the Top 25 this week. Don’t expect Maryland to jump in, though. Missouri won 10 overall titles at the Joe Parisi Lindenwood Open, but six of them were in the Open Division, so we’re focusing action there. The big Missouri outcome was actually a loss by All-American Willie Miklus at 197 pounds. Coming back off an injury and moving up a weight, he was majored by Iowa true freshman Jacob Warner. That’s going to be quite the result when it comes time to pull or not to pull redshirts up in Iowa City. Of note, Barlow McGhee won at 125 in a weight where Zeke Moisey again struggled, defaulting to sixth after losing to Oklahoma’s Christian Moody. Daniel Lewis looked sharp up at his new weight class, beating Oklahoma’s Yoanse Mejias at 174 and the lone non-D1 champion -- DEMETRIUS Thomas, the returning NAIA champion from Williams Baptist. He beat Missouri’s Austin Myers 7-1. There was a team-scored invitational in Division I where Navy won its own Navy Classic by outdistancing Purdue 112.5 to 100.5. Old Dominion was third with 98.5 Navy crowned three champions -- Nicholas Gil at 141,Drew Daniels at 165 and Jaeden Bernstein at 174. Brown was the only other team with two champions as the Bears, yes, they are the BROWN BEARS, had champs from Justin Staudenmayer and Christian LaFragola. Notable champions included Luke Welch of Purdue at 125, Josh Terao of American at 133, Matthew Kolodzik of Princeton at 149, Cory Griego of Oregon State at 197 and Mike Hughes of Hofstra at heavyweight. At the Georgia Open hosted by Emmanuel College, Maveric Rechsteiner captured the championship at 285 pounds. Some of you already know why I’m plugging this one. Rechsteiner is the son of Rob Rechsteiner, whom many of you may know as professional wrestler Rick Steiner. Pretty cool. Wesleyan captured the championship at the Doug Parker Invitational held at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass. Coach Drew Black’s Cardinals won three weights and placed eight overall to outdistance second-place Southern Maine 125-116. Back in Division I, NC State swept three opponents at the Wolfpack Duals. The seventh-ranked Pack beat Utah Valley 34-6, Division II UNC Pembroke 48-0 and NAIA Reinhardt 54-0. In Division II, Seton Hill rallied to win the last four bouts to defeat Millersville 20-18. You’re going to see a theme developing here. Damon Greenwald, Billy Bowlen, Jacob Temple and Jody Crouse swept 174 through heavyweight to give the Griffins the win. Of note on the Millersville side of things, 125-pounder Aaron Wildonger pinned third-ranked Alan Diltz in the first period. Other shoutouts go to Thomas More in Division III winning three duals on the day, topping Trine, MacMurray and Ancilla. That’s Thomas More, the school, not a singular person. The school is named after a person. You get the idea. The Saints, YES, Thomas More, like in the Val Kilmer movie The Saint. Still my favorite movie with Elisabeth Shue. Seriously. Dual action in Division III and a BIG ONE held at Roanoke Catholic High School in Roanoke, Virginia sees No. 11 Ferrum rip off five straight individual matches to come from behind to beat No. 3 Stevens Tech 21-18. The Panthers, in just the program’s fifth year, registered the program’s biggest win to date. Wins down the stretch by Andrew Tolbert, Blake Rosenbaum, Zach Shaffer, Hunter Goulart and Carlos Leyva gave Nate Yetzer’s squad the win. They are rolling there in Southwest Virginia. It was somewhat similar for another Virginia school, but in the other direction as Averett University wrestled its first dual as a first-year program and fell to Huntingdon 24-21. The Hawks won the last four matches, all by bonus points, to rally from a 21-3 deficit. Baldwin Wallace went 4-0 at the Mount Union Duals. Jamie Gibbs’ squad is serving as the host for the Division III National Championships this year in Cleveland. Muhlenberg hosted and won the Scotty Wood Duals, beating Camden County College in the final. On the women’s side, McKendree came away with the team championship at the Missouri Valley Invitational. The Bearcats placed 11 and crowned three individual champions. Brenda Reyna had three techs and a fall en route to her title at 123 pounds. Senior Megan Black, a U23 World Teamer, went 4-0 to take gold at 130, while Junior World bronze medalist Alexis Porter went 5-0 to win the title at 143. Get all those scores and more at the nation’s most robust college wrestling scoreboard at mattalkonline.com/scoreboard. Olivet Duals, Star City Duals and McDaniel duals still need to be added in the morning, but until then, show us some love by contributing to the network at mattalkonline.com/jointheteam. I got no Elton John jokes, except the whole Diet Coke campaign he had in the 90s. And some people I know saw him in Baku in 2007.   The Short Time Time Wrestling Podcast is proudly supported by Compound Clothing. And if you haven't already, leave a rating and a review on iTunes.

Welcome, welcome, welcome (or indeed, goedemorgen, goedemiddag, goedenavond) to Pip's second half of the Dutch mini-podcast tour! It may have been a mini round-the-houses whirlwind but he fit in a lot, and in episode 137 he is joined by none other than Ancilla van de Leest of the Pirate Party! Now Pip may be bending one of the self imposed rules he set a while ago by having a politician on the show, but there is a fascinating scene to be set and tale to be told in Ancilla's journey to where she currently finds herself. It's been a while in the works but they finally got to sit and talk, and here's your chance to sit in on an educational and hopefully inspiring discussion regarding the Pirate Party itself (in he Netherlands and worldwide), how it works, started, and functions (Pirate Bay is heavy in there), her own history and all that entails, how she got into politics (Pip is involved!!), net privacy and the huge problems which arise from that, digital rights, and all manner of deep political goodness...
