Angela engages in a frank and candid conversation with the great Andy Ramage, who shares his journey of giving up alcohol and the positive impact it had on his life. Andy discusses his personal experience of transitioning from a high-paced, alcohol-fuelled lifestyle to one focused on health, fitness, and personal growth. He highlights the importance of building healthy habits, setting goals, and staying committed to change, as well as emphasising the significance of overcoming ambivalence towards alcohol and creating a compelling future without it. KEY TAKEAWAYS Encouraging the adoption of healthy behaviours and habits, such as exercise and journaling, can create a positive loop of motivation and success. Recognising that setbacks and failures are a natural part of the journey towards change can help individuals bounce back stronger and continue on their path. By setting clear goals and values, individuals can train their brains to filter out information that aligns with their aspirations, leading to more focused and purposeful actions. Utilising alcohol-free alternatives in social situations can help individuals feel more comfortable and confident while socialising without alcohol. BEST MOMENTS "Life had plateaued a little bit. I'd got early onset heart disease I'd just discovered. My relationships were somewhat strained and it was a real awakening of Actually, what are we all doing? This is nuts." "I think it's ambivalence, that love-hate relationship in our brain with alcohol, which most people carry. So there's that moment of awareness of, actually, I think this is not serving me anymore." "When we can get so caught up in the steps, and that is a necessary part of it, like you say, you have to do the work, but you also have to switch your mind on to what's important." David Charlton discusses the psychological impact on professional footballers who are out of contract, a common issue in the summer months. These players face financial and emotional uncertainty, often without support from their former clubs. The loss of identity and routine can lead to a grief cycle, including denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. David emphasises how a Sports Psychologist can help professional footballers in these circumstances setting new goals, processing difficult emotions and providing a listening ear. Key Learning Points: Self-esteem and self-confidence can be impacted greatly when professional footballers are released. Often players are treated poorly by clubs and communication is lacking. In such situations it's often the case that mental toughness is developed through experience. The grief cycle is similar to an emotional rollercoaster that many professional football players experience with no set pattern. Raised in the predominantly white and middle-class area of Pinner, Trevor was one of the few black students in his school. Trevor embraced this difference and saw it as an advantage. He became head boy at school and felt that being ‘different' meant being unique and he thrived in his school environment and early life. In 1998, Trevor began his career at Ipsos in the post room, eventually becoming a graduate trainee. After that, he moved to Ernst and Young as a Business and Strategic Analyst, and then to AOL moving up to Head of Consumer Insights. In 2008, while backpacking up a mountain in Argentina, Trevor received a call from Facebook. He flew back for a 15-minute interview and, shortly after, had to cut his travels short in order to start his new role at Facebook a month later. During this time, Trevor met his mentor Blake, who has since guided him through his career. In 2012, Trevor experienced a major change when his mentor Blake called to tell him he had a new job role in New York and needed an answer that same day. Trevor returned to his desk and messaged his wife Ali, to which she replied, "I guess we're moving to New York then." Trevor is now Head of Marketing for Global Business Solutions, EU at TikTok. Trevor is also an Independent Non-Executive Director on the operational board of the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA), he is a mentor to the England Rugby Football Union (RFU) team and is on the global advisory board of Soho House Group. When they retire, some professional footballers train to become coaches, and a few rise to become the team manager or director of football. But very, very few players do what Maheta Molango has done, and cross the divide between the playing side and the C-suite, to become the CEO of a top club. It's a massive Church and State divide, a journey that reveals much about the person who is now in charge of the PFA, The Professional Footballers' Association, the union for all current and former footballers in the Premier League, the FA Women's Super League and the English Football Leagues.Molango passed his law degree during a playing career in Spanish and English football, going on to specialise in employment and sports law. In 2015 he was seconded to Atlético Madrid where he served as legal counsel, focused on contract and transfer negotiations and the following year was appointed the Chief Executive of RCD Mallorca after the takeover by former NBA star Steve Nash and Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver. His four years at RCD Mallorca saw the club achieve back-to-back promotions in to La Liga.Molango became Director of FIFA's Diploma in Club management programme, where he helps train executives, with speakers ranging from Arsène Wenger to Fabio Cannavaro. So this podcast is about the role of the players in the football business conversation. We discuss Molango's change agenda for the PFA, the launch of a new Business School and the broader questions on the relationship between those who run the game and the men and women who play it. Ofcom teamed up with The Alan Turing Institute to analyse more than 2.3 million tweets directed at Premier League footballers over the first five months of the 2021/22 season. Our research found that while the vast majority of fans use social media responsibly, hundreds of abusive tweets are sent to footballers every single day. Seven in every ten Premier League players are targeted but twelve players in particular face a barrage of abuse with half of all abuse directed towards them. This is a live recording of an event held at the National Football Museum in Manchester in August 2022, with a panel discussion hosted by Jules Breach (BT Sports), and features Gary Lineker, Aoife Mannion (Manchester United), Maheta Molango (Professional Footballers' Association), Sanjay Bhandari (Kick It Out), and Richard Wronka (Ofcom's Online Safety team).

In this Podcast Hannah Dyson talks to Tony Kelly about what drives him to educate young people and adults on the dangers of gambling and how he turned his life around to lead the battle against gambling addiction. In this webinar we will discuss Tony's personal journey including recovery tools and will explore Tony's current work with Red Card and why it is important to educate young people and adults on the dangers of gambling. After growing up with his sister and five brothers, including his twin Mel in Coventry, Tony Kelly became the youngest ever player in the Bristol City first team at the age of 16 before being snapped up as a pro by Stoke City where he spent 3 years under managers Alan Ball and Lou Macari. Tony played in the Swedish second Division as well as the second, third and further Divisions of the English Football League in a 9 year career. Tony's career saw highs of scoring a last-minute goal against Liverpool at Anfield in the 1991 League Cup to the lows of suffering from racial abuse and pervading this much longed for football career was a gambling addiction. Despite hanging up his boots in 1999, at the age of 35, his gambling demons were still a part of his life as nothing had prepared him for how to deal with his addiction. Tony's gambling addiction led to him to lose over £500,000, his house and partnerr. Tony was able to overcome this and now works with young people to educate them on gambling and the dangers of this getting out of control in anyone's life. Tony teamed up with the Professional Footballers' Association to write a book called "Red Card" with the aim of ensuring that everything is done to give all footballers the knowledge of what can be done. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/globalnet21/message

This highly engaging podcast features an interview with Paul Hart, as he reflects on the values and principles that he has adhered to throughout his highly successful career as both a professional footballer and coach. He provides an insight into his career and the many ways football has changed. KEY TAKEAWAYS The principles of respect are vital and to help develop this culture, is an expectation of good manners, no feigning of injury and no abuse; these are all good, positive traits to have in place. Playing football the right way with principles and discipline stands the test of time. An approach with the same disciplines throughout all levels of the club ensures the players are more confident. Values and a vision for success that are shared by everyone throughout the organisation are key to achieving goals. Believing in yourself and your team is an imperative component when building a successful organisation. It is belief about what you can achieve that drives a successful journey. Trust is a key component for a coach/ manager. The team need to be confident that they are not going to be let down. There needs to be confidence that everyone will do their best. Fulfilling the role of teacher requires that you have to know and to know anything you have to research it yourself You must always stand by what you believe in. When you have a focus in life and know what you stand for and against, then you are undeterred about reaching your goals. BEST MOMENTS “Playing football in the right way.” “Get involved in everything and it was important that they saw me everywhere.” “Hopefully they see what you’re doing and follow.” “I had total trust.” “But we’ll send them out the door far better men than they came through it.” “Every ship needs a rudder and I’m going to try and be that rudder.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Speaking From Our HEARTS (Paul's Book): https://www.amazon.co.uk/Speaking-our-Hearts-Mastering-game/dp/1781332819 Emerging From The Forest (Paul's Book): Paul Lowe - ‘Emerging From The Forest’ ABOUT THE HOST Something that’s never been attached to Paul is the label ‘normal’ – for which he is immensely proud. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.” Paul Lowe is the founder of PaulLoweHEARTS – which has a three-fold purpose.
