Is anxiety one of the main reasons why you crave alcohol? Because drinking is the simplest way to shut down your mind? But before you beat yourself up for not having an off-switch when you drink, you might notice that you probably don't have an off-switch for anything. What do you think is the hardest part of quitting drinking? Most of us assume that declining the invitation to drink requires massive amounts of willpower. And that staying sober will feel like trying not to cough…which means there's no way we'll be able to resist the urge forever. So you delay the announcement because you assume it's going to be difficult. You genuinely want to be successful, which requires you to wait for the “right” time. Meanwhile, you stop making the effort to cut back. Sobriety will be your top priority and have your full attention as soon as “life eases up.” But the more often you wake up with a hangover, the more anxious you feel about quitting. Because seriously, what the hell is your problem? The hardest part of getting sober is not suffering from an “alcohol deficiency.” It's making the decision to start today. Which means your drinking problem has morphed into a thinking problem. Welcome to Part 3 of my mini-series for Resolving Ambivalence: The mistakes you're making that trap you in the cycle of over-drinking. In this episode, you'll learn:
In this episode, we have Gill, who struggled early on in life with a lot of anger, and she would occasionally have friends growing up but because of being bullied so much in her youth, Gill's self-esteem and confidence were suffering. She focused a lot of her energy on her studies and excelled in the classroom. At home, things were also a struggle, and she is grateful for her close relationship with her brother and her love for video games. It wasn't until graduate school that Gill really became drawn into drinking alcohol as a way to cope with how life was playing out. Rick Fulton frequently minimized the gravity of the challenges he faced in his life. His upbringing was marked by profound difficulties, with his father's absence casting a long shadow. Between the ages of 3 and 6, Rick endured various forms of abuse that indelibly influenced his perspective on the world. As he matured, Rick developed an intense yearning for attention, a need that often went unmet. Lacking clear guidance, he eventually turned to alcohol and other substances (meth, ecstasy, speed) as a coping mechanism. People struggling with addiction are often hiding in plain sight. They're your neighbors, co-workers, friends, and maybe even family members. Daniel Patterson used to be one of those people. He was a high school teacher and assistant principal who had a serious, secret drinking problem. Dopamine is our primary source of motivation. It triggers us to move our ass towards whatever we think we want. The more you use external crutches to boost your dopamine, the less able your brain is to produce it naturally. You don't have to be a raging coke-head for this to apply. If you rely on any combination of sugar, caffeine, nicotine and alcohol for energy and motivation, or find yourself unable to stay off your phone, you're in a dopamine deficit. Sober Motivation It may sound crazy to think about getting geared up for holiday season, but I want you to be prepared so we are starting with some warm and fuzzy motivation. In the midst of all the weight of getting sober, having jobs, raising kids, and being high-functioning... it can be exhausting to stay excited about this self-help journey. And knowing there is plenty of stress for everyone, I want you to take a minute to breathe, and think about all the rewards for the hard work you are doing. It's so easy to look at the road ahead and get focused on how far we have to go. It is a road with no end, by the way, our work is never finished. At the same time, focus also on how far you've come. I went back in the archives of Addiction Unlimited and pulled some clips from some of my favorite guests to put together an episode that is laser focused on the beauty of transformation and all the rewards that come with having a clear mind and a vision for the future. Allyson Kane, Russ Perry, Omar Pinto, Mark Crandall, Emily Paulson, Chris Hill, and our very own 6 week program alum, Amorie. They all shared their stories with us on the podcast and I want you to hear the blessings and gratitude that recovery brings. These are all high-functioning, educated, entrepreneurs and self-starters, just like all my clients, and they have taken full advantage of the gifts of sobriety. As we move into the most demanding season of the year, I want you to have a fresh perspective and renewed energy moving forward. We'll do a series of episodes on getting through the holidays and, as you know, mindset is where it all starts. So get your ear buds ready, start your workout or curl up in your quiet space, and let's energize your mindset with the gifts of transformation.
