Learn about the role of pain management, tailoring approaches to individual pets' needs, ensuring a peaceful euthanasia process, and supporting pet owners through the grieving process. Discover the rewarding aspects of their work and the joy it brings amidst the emotional challenges.Dr. Amy Adoryan grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and although I am a city girl, I loved growing up near a Great Lake and enjoy driving out to the country to experience nature and the outdoors. Fortunately, Ohio offers both! I was always in tune with my childhood pets and was the first to notice if they needed medical attention. However, I did not decide to become a veterinarian until I attended college at Cleveland State University. After obtaining my veterinary degree from Ohio State University, I joined a small animal general medicine practice in Cleveland. I am passionate about wellness and preventive care, and high-quality, high-volume spay and neuter (HQHVSN) services. I have realized, however, that one of my favorite parts of veterinary medicine is the ability to give pets a peaceful passing. This is the aspect clients most appreciate, and I find most rewarding. Dr. Nicole Santabarbara received her veterinary degree from the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She started her career in general practice but soon found her calling in veterinary hospice and end-of-life care. She was the first veterinarian to establish the Cleveland market for Lap of Love and has been passionately providing these services to her community for the last 3 years. She is currently working towards the Veterinary Hospice and Euthanasia Practitioner certification through Lap of Love and the Peaceful Euthanasia Certification through CAETA (Companion Animal Euthanasia Training Academy). She finds great fulfillment in helping pets stay comfortable in the last stage of life, as well as helping families give their fur babies the peaceful send-off they deserve.`` When she isn't working, she enjoys biking in the Metroparks with her boyfriend, trying new restaurants, and snuggling with her dog, Reggie, and cat, Olive. Resources: Lap of Love https://lapoflove.com International Association for Animal Hospice and Palliative Care iaahpc.org/Companion Animal Euthanasia Training Academy https://caetainternational.comBe sure to check out Tabitha's most recent Fear Free and Behavior is Medicine highlights and more on her social media channels! How do you host a pet loss memorial service? Living in a ‘death avoidance' society, many are uncomfortable with the idea of facing death and the passing of a pet. As pet sitters, we can position ourselves as leaders in the community of hurting people who have lost their pets. We can create safe spaces for them to grieve and find others to support them in their mourning work. Coleen Ellis, founder of the Two Hearts Pet Loss Center, joins the show to share what it takes to put on an effective pet loss memorial service. She gives details on elements you can include, and ones to avoid. Main topics What should we call it? Why are they needed? Typical structure Growing the community Things to avoid Main takeaway: Hosting a pet loss memorial events helps people in your community understand that the grief we have is the price we have for love, and that there is support for them. About our guest: For Coleen, her foray into helping grieving pet lovers started in 1998 with a chance encounter with a pet parent facing the death of her beloved pet. It was the beginning of a vision of how to best meet the needs of pet parents in their desire to mourn, memorialize and pay tribute to their beloved pets when they die. In 2004, the experience of the death of Mico guided her in starting the nation's first stand-alone pet funeral home. Soon, publications such as Kates-Boylston's Pet Loss Insider deemed her the “most well known pet funeral director” and a true “pet loss pioneer.” Two Hearts Pet Loss Center was founded in 2009 to guide people who wished to do the same in providing meaningful pet death care services in their communities. Two Hearts was also started to aid in being an educational resource in the pet grief discipline. In 2009, she received the first Death and Grief Studies Certification specializing in Pet Loss Companioning by Dr. Alan Wolfelt as well as releasing her first book, Pet Parents: A Journey Through Unconditional Love and Grief. She is also Certified in Thanatology and is a Certified Pet Loss Professional. By 2014, Coleen was ready to take her vision to a new level. Joining Nick Padlo as managing partner and Chief Marketing Officer, they formed an acquisition company whose mission was to standardize and raise the service levels of the pet loss industry. The Pet Loss Center strives to be the nation's premier pet loss service, elevating the experiential component of pet loss and grief care across the country. In 2019, she shifted her position with The Pet Loss Center to an Advisory/Consultant role in order to focus more fully on Two Hearts and those demanding education, mentoring, and coaching in the pet death care space. Coleen is an internationally sought-after speaker on the topics of pet loss and grief. Through her delivery style, pet care professionals learn a variety of techniques immediately applicable to implement on how to companion families in their grief journey. Furthermore, her talks to pet parents give them the permission they need to not only grieve but mourn the loss of their beloved pet. Coleen is the founder and past co-chair of the Pet Loss Professionals Alliance and past president of the International Association of Animal Hospice and Palliative Care, where she currently serves as an advisor. She is a native of Kansas where she graduated from Fort Hays State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing. She currently sits on the Board of Trustees for Fort Hays State University, and is a recipient of the 2018 Alumni Achievement Award, the college's highest recognition for graduates. In this eposide of Your Pets, Our Pets podcast, Scott Buttz, President & Chief Operating Officer of Regency Pet, speaks with Coleen Ellis, Director of the International Association for Animal Hospice and Palliative Care, also known as IAAHPC. Coleen is a renowned lecturer and educator on pet end of life for both veterinarians and pet families. She's an entrepreneur owning many companies and is an accomplished author and well-recognized thought leader on the subject of pet death care.   Coleen discusses why she wants every family to think the end of life care for their pets was perfect and the services the IAAHPC provides to ensure this. She shares what she thinks has been the most instrumental change in the industry and where the industry is going in the next decade. She also talks about what was the most exciting thing about the recent IAAHPC virtual conference and what to expect at the upcoming VMX 2022, hosted by North American Veterinary Community (NAVC).   WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why she wants every family to say “The end was perfect.” What is the IAAHPC The most exciting thing about the conference and upcoming IAAHPC events What to expect at the upcoming VMX 2022 The most important message Coleen wants to deliver to veterinarians and their staff regarding end of life What's been the most instrumental change and where she sees the industry going in the next decade   QUOTES “What's the beauty of our industry and in our profession right now, Scott, is what do we do with the end of life walk? And my goal and the flag I carry when it comes to this subject is I want every family we work with to turn around and look at us and say, ‘The end was perfect. I have no regrets.'” -Coleen Ellis [05:02] “We live in a death avoidance society. We live in a society that says, ‘If I die.' We live in a society where we work with families who say ‘If my pet dies.' And then on that really bad day because we didn't want to think about it, because we believed if we thought about it, we would make it happen quicker, and then all of the sudden, we get put in this position and it happens with us with our human loved ones too. We don't want to believe it's' going to happen, and it's a when. It's not an if. It is a when.” -Coleen Ellis [07:14] “Everything within IAAHPC is all about what is it the pet parent wants as far as the end walk, and how will we as professionals insert ourselves into help with that walk.” -Coleen Ellis [13:33] “It's time to think differently” -Coleen Ellis [25:31]   TIMESTAMPS [00:13] Intro [00:25] Meet Coleen [02:21] Is Coleen a cat or dog person? I had the pleasure of speaking with today's guest, Angie Arora, and her colleague several months ago about the research done on the challenges of pet loss and bereavement. They shared so much information during that discussion that I asked Angie to return to the show today. In this episode, Angie takes a deep dive into pet loss and bereavement, the stages of grief, immortalizing a beloved pet, and some of the challenges people had to face during the pandemic.  Angie is a registered social worker from Toronto, Canada, with over sixteen years of experience in the fields of pet loss and veterinary compassion resilience. She is a virtual pet loss facilitator and a lead coach for VetVine's Wellness and Professional Resiliency Coaching Program. She also continues to research to better support clients through their pet's end of life. Join us today to hear more about the work Angie is doing to help people through the various stages of the grief process.  Show highlights: Angie explains what led her to become interested in doing the work she does. Angie describes the various types of grief. Angie explains why social support networks are everything when it comes to grief and mourning. And why people need to tap into support networks now more than ever. Emotional regulation begins with self-awareness. Angie explains what it means to be self-aware. Angie discusses the importance of the routine that pets bring to our lives. Kristen Neff wrote an excellent book about self-compassion. Angie explains what self-compassion means and why it is vital to have self-compassion during the grieving process. Often, when people grieve the loss of a pet, they lose the support networks that are evident in other aspects of their lives.  Validation is a fundamental need. When we are not validated, it can complicate the rest of our healing journey. We need to find ways to adapt to the pandemic situation without sacrificing our needs in the process. Angie discusses that in the context of pet loss and pet memorial. Angie discusses the work that David Kessler has been doing around the sixth stage of grief, the meaning stage. Angie shares some of the greatest lessons she's learned from the people she has helped.   Angie's bio: Angie Arora, MSW, RSW Angie Arora is a registered Social Worker from Toronto, Canada, with over 16 years of experience in the areas of pet loss and veterinary compassion resilience. She has worked as a hospital Veterinary Social Worker, facilitated community-based pet loss support groups, and engaged in media campaigns to reduce the stigma associated with pet loss. Angie serves as the Board Secretary for the International Association of Veterinary Social Work, is the Research Chair for the International Association for Animal Hospice &Palliative Care, and volunteers her time to address equity issues within veterinary medicine. My guest on today's show is Dr. Shea Cox. Shea is the founder of PetHospice. Shea is also about to be a published author, which she humbly tries to sneak in at the end. Shea's mission as you hear throughout is to make end of life care and euthanasia easy on the pets, the owners, and the veterinary staff. She shares her journey to veterinary medicine and the challenges she overcame. The challenges she saw as a emergency and critical care veterinarian. How she looked at the challenge, noticed it was a passion, and something she enjoyed providing. How a three-hour appointment time not only works, but is financially feasible. How she's leveraged technology to provide on-going support and better care. Her thoughts on battling compassion fatigue and burnout. Finally, be sure to listen to the end where she explains what she's excited about, what keeps her moving forward, and the certification process for International Association for Animal Hospice and Palliative Care which she helped found.  So, with that introduction enjoy my conversation with Dr. Shea Cox which I can assure you won't allow you not to smile and laugh throughout.  PetHospice Website: https://www.pethospice.com/ (https://www.pethospice.com/) Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/PetHospiceGroup/ (https://www.facebook.com/groups/PetHospiceGroup/) International Association for Animal Hospice and Palliative Care Website: https://www.iaahpc.org/ (https://www.iaahpc.org/) https://medici.cx/vetsuccess (Learn about Medici)

In this podcast we are wrapping up our "Old Dogs Rule" educational series with a difficult, but important conversation about end of life care. We are very fortunate to have Dr. Kathleen Cooney, founder of “Home to Heaven,” an in-home pet hospice and euthanasia services practice. She is also the owner of the first-ever pet euthanasia center in the United States. The center is located on her 35-acre farm in Loveland, Colorado and offers two comfort rooms for pet euthanasia. It is open year-round for families looking for an alternative to standard clinic or in-home euthanasia. Dr. Cooney graduated from the Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine in the spring of 2004. That same spring, her family had to say goodbye to their 15-year-old yellow lab, McKenzie. McKenzie passed peacefully under the aspen tree in their front yard. From this experience, Dr. Cooney learned just how important it was for pets to be at home for the end of their lives. In 2012, she completed writing the book “Veterinary Euthanasia Techniques: A practical guide.” Dr. Cooney served on the 2013 American Veterinary Medical Association's panel on euthanasia guidelines. She is currently the Vice President and conference coordinator for the International Association for Animal Hospice and Palliative Care (IAAHPC).  She travels frequently to speak on her work and on the current advancements in end-of-life care. This podcast was made possible thanks to the generous support of the Kenneth A. Scott Charitable Trust, A KeyBank Trust.
