This week on the "Every 4 Years" Podcast, we are honored to have Anita Alvarez, a 3-time Olympian for the US in Artistic Swimming (formerly known as Synchronized Swimming). Imagine being known more for a photo capturing one of your lowest moments than for your incredible achievements as a world-renowned athlete. That's Anita's story. At the 2022 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Anita fainted in the pool at the end of her solo free routine and sank to the bottom. Her coach, Andrea Fuentes, heroically jumped in to rescue her. From this near-death experience to her remarkable journey of qualifying for her third Olympics in Paris, we cover it all. Anita's journey in Artistic Swimming began early. She competed in the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials as a 14-year-old. Her passion for the sport runs in the family; her mom competed in the 1984 U.S. Olympic Trials with her duet and placed 7th. We also explore Anita's personal connection to the iconic 1980 Olympic "Miracle on Ice" hockey game in Lake Placid, NY, through her grandfather. Join us as we dive deep into the resilience, determination, and inspiring story of Anita Alvarez. This is an episode you will want to listen to over and over. #pruebeidler #kimfoxx #lakeforestillinois #lakeforestpodcast #Lakecountygazette In backing Foxx, Lightfoot, Lake Forest Mayoral hopeful Beidler was also boosting daughter-in-law's career By LGIS News Service Mar 4, 2023 Lake Forest Mayoral candidate Prudence Beidler made campaign donations to Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx and Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot as her daughter-in-law worked in high level positions for both offices. That's according to an analysis of public employment and Illinois State Board of Elections (ISBE) records. Deborah E. Witzburg-Beidler, 39, worked as an Assistant State's Attorney for Cook County from 2008 to 2016 before leaving to join the Chicago Mayor Inspector General's office. In Fall 2015, Beidler made a maximum, $5,400 donation to Foxx's first campaign for Cook County State's Attorney 2015, while her daughter-in-law worked for the office, ISBE records show. Her husband, Frank, also donated $1,000 to Foxx that fall. A former assistant state's attorney herself who rose to the role of supervisor, Foxx and Witzburg-Beidler worked together for five years, from 2008 - 2013, county records show. ISBE records show Beidler has been a longtime backer of Foxx-sponsor, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, donating to her campaign 14 times for a total of $9,500. Preckwinkle hired Foxx as her “Chief of Staff” before positioning her to challenge then-incumbent Anita Alvarez for Cook County State's Attorney in 2016. Six promotions Witzburg-Beidler joined then-Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel in May 2016 as an assistant inspector general and stayed on when Lightfoot won election three years later. Her mother-in-law has been a campaign supporter of both Chicago mayors. Beidler made campaign donations to Emanuel in 2011 and 2013, totaling $2,500. She backed Lightfoot in Feb. 2019 with $1,000, and then, after she assumed office, gave her $1,000 again in June 2019. According to her LinkedIn page, two months later, Lightfoot promoted Witzburg-Beidler to “acting deputy general counsel for public safety.” Lightfoot promoted her three more times, naming her as the city's Inspector General in March 2022. Last month in an email to supporters, Beidler explained that she made donations to Foxx and Lightfoot because she thought they could "reduce the rate of crime in Chicago." She didn't mention her daughter-in-law's work with either office. "My son, his wife, and their two daughters are Chicago residents. In recent years, my husband and I have become increasingly concerned about their safety and I had hoped that candidates I supported might be able to help reduce the rate of crime in Chicago," Beidler wrote. Beidler is the only Lake Forest resident who has donated for Foxx; she is one of 12 who have backed Lightfoot. Deborah and Jay married in Boston in 2007. They met while attending Brown University in Providence, R.I. Witzburg-Beidler attended Northwestern University Law School in Chicago. Beidler, 77, is challenging Lake Forest Caucus-endorsed Dr. Stanford R. "Randy Tack," 64, in the race for mayor. Election Day is Tues. April 4. Most recently we're seeing a rash of Sudden Adult Death Syndromes with world class level and professional athletes. On 6.22.22 Baltimore Ravens outside linebacker Jaylon Ferguson was found dead at the age of 26 of unknown causes. An otherwise healthy athlete in his prime. On 6.24.22 swimmer Anita Alvarez is rescued by her coach during the world aquatic championships. Again, no known cause according to the media for the sudden blackout as she sank to the bottom of the pool. A world class athlete performing her sport she's reached the highest level. Cases of sudden deaths in sports, athletes collapsing on the field of play, athletes retiring with heart problems, and sudden deaths on the field of play began to increase exponentially in 2021 and early 2022. He fainted on the field of play, his teammates tried to revive him and rushed him to the hospital, but he died of cardiac arrest. This is only a very small list of the many arguably very "healthy" athletes that have either cardiac arrested in their sleep or on the field with no previous health problems. Why, the unwillingness to connect the dots of C-19 jabs and the massive rise in "healthy deaths"? What doctors around the world have spoken out about with the C-19 jab is the resultant of predictable myocarditis, increased strokes, blood clotting and overall CV events all potentially leading to death risk.

UPDATED FRIDAY MORNING: Congress is on the verge of approving a $13 billion bipartisan gun violence bill that seemed unimaginable a month ago. House approval is expected Friday on legislation that would be lawmakers' most sweeping answer in decades to mass shootings that have come to shock yet not surprise Americans. The Senate approved the measure Thursday, with 15 Republicans joining Democrats in backing passage. The election year vote comes just weeks after a gunman massacred 19 elementary school students and two teachers in Uvalde, Texas, and a white man motivated by racism allegedly killed 10 Black grocery shoppers in Buffalo, New York. Governors, lawmakers and attorneys general in states with strict gun-permitting laws are strategizing over how to shore up their restrictions after Thursday's U.S. Supreme Court decision expanded gun rights in a New York case. The head of the United Nations has warned the world faces “catastrophe” because of the growing shortage of food around the globe. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says the war in Ukraine has fueled an “unprecedented global hunger crisis” already affecting hundreds of millions of people. Guterres said U.N. negotiators have been working on a deal that would enable Ukraine to export food and let Russia bring food and fertilizer to world markets without restrictions. A regional governor in eastern Ukraine says that the country's troops will retreat from a besieged city to avoid encirclement. The city of Sievierodonetsk, the administrative center of the Luhansk region, has faced relentless Russian bombardment. Toyota is recalling 2,700 of its bZ4X crossover vehicles globally for wheel bolts that could become loose, in a major setback for the Japanese automaker's ambitions to roll out electric cars. The House panel investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol revealed Thursday that several Republican loyalists in Congress who trumpeted the president's claims later sought pardons from the White House after the effort failed. In sports, a Duke player goes No. 1 in the NBA draft, the Yankees stun the Astros, the Braves beat the Giants, a Pro Football Hall of Famer dies and another Manning will be heading to the SEC. EARIER REPORTS FIRST PUBLISHED THURSDAY: Federal agents have searched the Virginia home of a Trump-era Justice Department official who championed efforts by Trump to overturn the results of the 2020 election. That's according to a person familiar with the matter. The Supreme Court has ruled that Americans have a right to carry firearms in public for self-defense, a major expansion of gun rights. The court struck down a New York gun law in a ruling expected to directly impact half a dozen other populous states. Thursday's decision came with recent mass shootings fresh in the nation's mind and Americans emotionally divided on the issue. Across the street from the court, the Senate sped toward passage of its own national legislation, a gun law modest in scope but still the most far-reaching in decades. Authorities say a knife-wielding psychiatric patient has fatally stabbed one man and wounded another inside a Las Vegas hospital. Metro Police say the stabbings occurred early Thursday in the psychiatric ward of University Medical Center. A judge has given final approval to a settlement of more than $1 billion for victims of the collapse of a Florida beachfront condominium. Ninety-eight people died when the 12-story Champlain Towers South suddenly collapsed. It was one of the deadliest building failures in U.S. history. Michigan has agreed to destroy more than 3 million dried blood spots taken from babies and kept in storage. It's all part of a partial settlement in an ongoing lawsuit over consent and privacy in the digital age. Hospitals routinely prick the heels of newborns to draw blood to check for more than 50 rare diseases. That practice isn't being challenged. The dispute in Michigan is over leftover samples. Health officials have ordered vaping company Juul to pull its electronic cigarettes from the U.S. market. It's the biggest blow yet to the embattled company that is widely blamed for sparking a surge in teen vaping. The announcement Thursday by the Food and Drug Administration is part of a sweeping regulatory review of e-cigarettes, which faced little regulation until recently. Average long-term U.S. mortgage rates inched up this week following last week's mammoth jump, the biggest in 35 years. Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac reported Thursday that the 30-year rate ticked up to 5.81% this week, from last week's 5.78%. Andrea Fuentes prevented a tragedy at the swimming world championships in Budapest, Hungary, with her quick reaction. The United States coach knew something was wrong when she saw artistic swimmer Anita Alvarez sink motionless to the bottom of the pool during a solo free routine on Wednesday. —The Associated Press See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Republicans House Leader Jim Durkin and State Senator John Curran authored a horrific OpEd in the Chicago Tribune calling for a return to the good old days of law and order Cook County style. You remember when people like Richard Daley and Dick Devine were doing their level best to wrongfully convict people as long as it served their political interests. When the Cook County State's attorney's Office worked like an extension of the Chicago Police Department and never questioned their abusive and corrupt actions. The truth is Durkin and Curran are yearning for a time that never existed. The criminal justice system has always been broken and racist in Chicago but of course not during the time Durkin and Curran were part of that system. It is only after they left that the system broke down. While there is not easy to nail down the exact years both Durkin and Curran where in the office it is pretty clear that their terms overlap the terms or Daley - Devine - and Anita Alvarez. Not sure if i was Durkin or Curran I would be using my affiliation with those individuals as a measure of my credibility on any issue. All three ran offices rocked with internal corruption and with long histories of political favors and letting abuse by the CPD run rampant. The Chicago Tribune was all to happy to run this horrific piece because they also with they could go back in time to when black and brown people knew to keep their crime in their communities so white people didn't have to put up with it. This is basically what Durkin and Curran are also talking about but of course they use coded language to to veil their racism. Durkin & Curran with the assistance of the Chicago Tribune are pushing for a return to policies that failed us in the past and will doom us to be back where we are 10 years from now. TJ asks Anita for the reasons behind the name change of Synchronized Swimming to Artistic Swimming (1:06). Anita breaks down the sport and explains the different events in Artistic Swimming (2:46), if they can hear the music underwater (5:27) and what kind of cues they use while performing (6:35). She also talks about what it was like to train John Legend in Artistic Swimming (9:14). They discuss why Anita chose to pursue Synchronized Swimming (11:42), Anita's relationship with her mom in the sport of Synchronized Swimming (13:51) and what it was like to move across the country on her own, in high school, to join the USA Senior National Team (16:25). Anita talks about what it was like to make her first Olympic Team (18:17), her grandfather's involvement with the "Miracle on Ice" in the 1980 Winter Olympics (19:48) and the moment when it hit her that she was at the Olympic Games (21:08). TJ asks Anita why placing 9th in Rio was such a huge accomplishment (23:52), what separates the top few teams in the world from the others (25:34), how the US can get back on the podium for the first time since 2004 (27:07), and why this may be the first US team that qualifies for the Olympics since 2008 (28:38). Anita explains what it is like being the veteran on the National Team at 23 years old (30:42), what their training consists of (32:09), how her training differs from other teammates with all of her various roles (33:58), what training consists of outside of the water (36:33) and the battle wounds that are suffered at practice (38:28). USA Artistic Swimming 2016 Olympian Anita Alvarez talks to me about the impact COVID-19 has had on her year and career!
Kim "The Fixx" Foxx, Jussie Smollett and the March 17 Democratic Primary Seasons 2 Episode 2, February 13, 2020 Ray Hanania on Politics looks closely at the abuse of power by Cook County States Attorney Kim Foxx, or "Kim The Fixx Foxx," & her decision to drop charges against Jussie Smollett, the mediocre TV actor who lied about being the victim of a racist homophobic attack in January 2019 to bolster his sagging public image. Foxx didn't "mishandle" the Smollett case. She intentionally handled it putting politics and celebrity friendship above her job to enforce the Rule of Law. Foxx faces three good candidates, Bob Fioretti, Donna More and Bill Conway. Although I like both Fioretti and More, I think the election campaign is showing that Bill Conway is leading the pack and the goal is to oust Foxx who stumbled into the office by defeating Anita Alvarez. Many argue Foxx "beat" Alvarez, but the truth is Alvarez beat herself and Foxx just lucked into the office. It's been almost four years for Foxx and she has proven to be a terrible States Attorney who puts the interest of her political pals above justice. The biggest criticism of More is she is running one of the worst election campaigns I've seen in 45 years of covering politics. More's campaign is terrible and that is surprising. She's a friend who I admire with great credentials as a former prosecutor, and I once worked with her husband who is one of the most brilliant PR and marketing professionals I have come to meet. But there is an old saying that a person can never do their own PR and in this case, I have to think that might be the problem. I mean when I went to find information on More this week, four weeks before the March 17 Democratic Primary election, I found her Twitter page which promotes a link to her campaign website, at voteformore.com. But when you go there it opens into a page offering to sell the site to the highest bidder. Try it yourself. It's a sophomoric mistake that no candidate should make or has to make given how easy it is to create websites. You almost wonder if Donna is in the race to help Kim "The Fixx" Foxx. Bob Fioretti is also a friend who I admire and have supported in the past and I would have loved to see him build up momentum against Foxx, but that doesn't seem to be happening. AT least when you click on Fioretti's campaign website link on his Twitter account, it takes you to a detailed page about his credentials and issues. www.bobforstatesattorney.com. You definitely should go there and check it out. But the issue is removing Kim "The Fixx" Foxx from office and to elect someone whose priority is the safety of the residents of Cook County from increasing crime and violence, not someone who places a higher priority on her political cronies, pals and the famous and celebrities. Kim "The Fixx" Foxx should resign, but no one willingly leaves an office they are unqualified to hold. The leading candidate is Bill Conway, a former prosecutor in the Cook County State's Attorney's Office and former Navy Intelligence Officer who fought the Taliban. He is mounting a formidable challenge to Kim "The Fixx" Foxx. His website is newdayconway.com. Any of the leading challengeers against Kim "The Fixx" Foxx would be great replacements, Fioretti, More and especially Conway.

Today we are talking to Kim Foxx, the head prosecutor of Cook County in Illinois. Cook County, which includes 135 separate municipalities including Chicago, is the second largest county in America, and has a population bigger than 28 states. State’s Attorney Foxx was elected in 2016. She replaced Anita Alvarez, who had, to put it lightly, a disappointing record on criminal justice reform. Foxx’s election was a major victory for the criminal justice reform movement, and for progressive and racial justice organizers in Chicago. She is the first black woman to run the prosecutor’s office in Cook County. She is joining us today to discuss her past two years as state’s attorney—what’s been successful, what has been challenging, what obstacles she’s faced and how this job has changed her perspective on criminal justice reform. For links to resources visit theappeal.org.
Author & Supreme Court historian Professor Lucas Powe joins Rich and Tina to discuss how Brett Kavanaugh will change the Supreme Court. Former Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez discusses whether the jury got it right with Jason Van Dyke, who she charged with murder. In the Legal Grab Bag, Tina and Rich are joined by WGN Radio’s Michael Heidemann and Horwood Marcus & Berk Marketing and Business Development Manager Jason Klika to discuss breaking legal news involving Canada legalizing pot, the NCAA bribery trial, Harvey Weinstein heading back to court, the Kanye/Trump bromance and more.

There are also discussions about developments in fascism and anti-fascism, with reports from the UK and Australia, and an analysis by Gulf Coast anarchists of the environmental movement's supposed "victory" over the Keystone XL pipeline in November. On the Chopping Block, we review the latest issue of Perspectives on Anarchist Theory, the journal of the Institute for Anarchist Studies, on the theme of "Justice." Long term black liberation political prisoner Herman Bell discusses his upcoming parole hearing, and we share plenty of news, including some reflection on a new round of revolts in Tunisia, plus prisoner birthdays, events, listener feedback, and more. {February 11, 2016} -------SHOW NOTES------ On the Chopping Block, we reviewed the latest issue (Number 28, on "Justice") of Perspectives on Anarchist Theory, the journal published by the Institute for Anarchist Studies. You can order it through AK Press; you can also find them on Facebook, though you know how we feel about that. Our friends at the North American anarchist news website It's Going Down have announced plans to produce a print magazine! Check out their Kickstarter page if you want to show them some support. Former Black Panther and long term political prisoner Herman Bell is up for parole in February. Please check out this info from his support site about how to help with his parole hearing, including an online petition. Here's Glenn Greenwald's editorial critiquing the notion that internet encryption is responsible for the Paris terror attacks by the Islamic State. The report we shared on Rojava came to us from a group of anarchists and internationalists from Central Europe working for liberation in Kurdistan. If you're interested in reading more, CrimethInc. previously published a longer interview piece from this group titled "From Germany to Bakur: European Anarchists on the Kurdish Struggle". To learn more about the Guarani resistance in the state of Sao Paulo, mentioned in the report on 2015 resistance in Brazil, visit yvyrupa.org.br. Our friends who reported on the so-called "victory" over the Keystone XL pipeline sent links to some of the ongoing ecological resistance happening along the Gulf Coast, including folks fighting a massive 42" LNG export pipeline whose route from West Texas to Mexico cuts through Big Bend National Park - visit Defend Big Bend and the Big Bend Conservation Alliance; and the environmental justice group in Mobile, AL called MEJAC that is fighting an oil storage tank farm that would directly impact the historic community of Africa Town. In terms of ecological resistance coming up this year, there's the Prison Ecology Project's gathering coming up June 11-13 in the Washington D.C. area, focused on building around the intersection of incarceration and the environment. There's also a struggle brewing against a new federal prison slated to be built on a former mountaintop removal site in Eastern Kentucky. And the Earth First! Winter Organizer's Conference is taking place February 10th-15th on Chumash territory outside Santa Barbara, California. Please take a moment to support Jared "Jay" Chase of the NATO 3! You can attend his court date on February 18th in Chicago, follow his case on Twitter, Facebook, or the NATO 3 support page. You can also write to Jay at: Jared Chase M44710 P.O. Box 99 Pontiac, IL 61764 Here's an announcement from supporters about the court date: Pack the court for Jay Chase Thursday, February 18, 9 AM Cook County Criminal Courthouse 2600 S California Ave, Chicago, Illinois 60623 The presiding Judge had a sick day on 2.3 so Jared "Jay" Chase now has a pre-trial hearing on February 18th at 26th and California in Room 303. He is being targeted by the same prosecutor (Anita Alvarez) he faced during the NATO 3 trial for alleged assault charges pinned on him by guards while he awaited trial for two years back in 2012-2014. These same guards were allowed to testify against him during the NATO 3 sentencing in a somewhat successful attempt to bring a harsher sentence and now they will likely testify against him in this case . . . This trial is not just about a few extra years being tacked on to his current sentence which is coming to an end in May. The State has made it very clear through this obviously vindictive prosecution that they want to ensure Jay lives out his days in their cage. Please be there and show the State that we stand with Jay and let Jay know that we have not forgotten him or his struggle. He needs our love and support as he stands in defiance of this ongoing persecution.
