The Voyager probes have been transiting space since 1977, and they're still at it 46 years later. But late in 2023, Voyager 1, now 15 billion miles distant, started sending what the flight controllers called "gibberish" back to Earth---uncoordinated ones and zeros and a heartbeat tone. They knew it was still alive, but something had gone wrong. The small team of software wizards at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory got to work and came up with a workaround... but due to the age of the program, did not have an old enough computer on the ground to test it! They'd have to eyeball the sequence and send it to overwrite existing programming on the spacecraft. The round-trip radio signal from Earth takes 45 hours... and it was a nail-biter. Join us as we discuss this rescue beyond the solar system with Voyager Mission Scientist Dr. Linda Spilker. Headlines: Boeing Starliner launch delayed again due to a "buzzing" valve on the Atlas V rocket, not related to the spacecraft itself James Webb Space Telescope detects weather patterns on an exoplanet 41 light-years away, revealing a regenerating atmosphere on a puffy, molten world Elon Musk shares his thoughts on the lack of evidence for alien visitation, citing SpaceX's 6,000 satellites that have never had to maneuver around a UFO Feedback: A listener appreciates the discussion on how music relates to space exploration, but points out a missed opportunity to mention Ronald McNair's planned saxophone performance in space, which was tragically halted by the Challenger disaster. Main Topic - Saving Voyager 1 with Dr. Linda Spilker: Dr. Spilker's career at JPL, starting in 1977 and working on the Voyager mission, Cassini, and returning to Voyager as Project Scientist Voyager's small flight team and science team, many of whom have been with the mission since its inception The spacecraft's journey beyond the heliopause and into interstellar space, making unprecedented measurements of the interstellar medium The ambitious Grand Tour of the outer solar system, visiting Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, and the remarkable discoveries made at each planet and their moons The recent challenges faced by Voyager 1, including a failed chip and the efforts to restore its function from Earth The limited computing power and memory of the Voyagers compared to modern spacecraft and the ingenuity required to program and communicate with them Pressure Front 2, a mysterious feature in the interstellar medium that Voyager 1 was monitoring before its recent glitch The expected lifespan of the Voyager probes and the need to start shutting down instruments as power decreases in the coming years Dr. Spilker's personal highlights from the mission, including the beauty of Saturn's rings, the geysers on Neptune's moon Triton, and hints of Saturn's moon Enceladus feeding the planet's E-ring Wishes for future exploration of the outer solar system, focusing on the ice giants Uranus and Neptune, Pluto, and other small worlds with rings Hosts: Rod Pyle and Tariq Malik Guest: Dr. Linda Spilker Download or subscribe to this show at https://twit.tv/shows/this-week-in-space. On this week's episode, we were honored to speak with Avi Loeb for the second time. We were gratiously invited to his home to record and chat all-things space, IM1, and his latest expedition. Dr. Loeb is the Baird Professor of Science and Institute director at Harvard University and the bestselling author of “Extraterrestrial” and "Interstellar". He explains the origins, hypothesis, and research behind searching for the debris of an interstellar object (IM1) that impacted the atmosphere of Earth over the Pacific Ocean. The speed of this object was detected and confirmed by the US Space Command. Avi and his Expedition crew aboard the all-aluminum 'Silver Star' ship dragged a magnetic sled over the ocean floor in search of 'spherules' or melted droplets from IM1's reentry. The 'spherules' would contain evidence of the materials that make up IM1's surface, and the team recovered some!  This week we share the more curious nature of science with an example of real-life scientific research conducted with a crew, based on real, known physics that provides a platform to test against the potential for "space trash tech-spherules" and the simple "space rock" hypothesis. The beauty of this experiement is (like all good experiments) it sets the grounds for observed reality to show us what is really going on. Are the spherules made of technological remains, like sillicone and alloys - or some fascinating superalloy from another star system formation? With millions of readers following along with the adventure on Medium, its clear that this interstellar expedition has captured the attention of 'the people' and most important - those who were not already interested in science.  Thank you to Avi for coming back on the podcast and for sharing about his journey and thoughts on the role of a scientific mindset in our lives. Check out his new book 'Interstellar' coming to a retailer IRL or digitally soon.  Let us know if YOU think in the comments or email us at todayinspacepodcast@gmail.com! The Voyager missions are hurtling into interstellar space, but are running out of energy. Like us, they are having to ration what little they have left. One by one, their instruments will be shut down, but the engineers have some tricks to try to eek out the precious remaining electricity for a few more years.

Solar storms had erupted earlier in 2012, and the next year they shocked the plasma that Voyager 1 was speeding through, causing electrons there to oscillate and give off radio waves that the spacecraft detected. The frequency of those radio waves indicated that Voyager had indeed entered a much denser domain (2). Voyager 1 thus became the first spacecraft ever to reach the interstellar medium. Contrary to some media reports, the craft had not left the solar system. Roughly a trillion icy bodies revolve around the Sun far beyond the orbits of Neptune and Pluto; every now and then one of them plunges toward the Sun and we see a new comet in the sky. Someone in the center of the continental United States who walks three miles west has gotten closer to the Pacific Ocean, relatively speaking, than Voyager has to the solar system's edge. Patrick Shiroishi is a Japanese-American multi-instrumentalist & composer based in Los Angeles, whose 2021 album Hidemi was one of our favorites of the year. A prolific collaborator, Shiroishi can also be heard in various duos, trios, and larger ensembles, including the quartet Fuubutsushi, another group that has been in steady rotation at ACL. In this episode, we reminisce about elementary school concert band and Third Wave ska, discuss his introduction to various modes of improvisation, and explore his love of black metal. Shiroishi also unpacks the importance of family history and ancestry to his work, particularly against the recent rise in anti-Asian racism. As live performances pick up again, he also looks back on how the pandemic turned him into an unlikely proponent of online collaboration. Eamonn Kerins is an astrophysicist based at the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics at the University of Manchester. He is one of the UK's leading experts in the discovery of exoplanets - planets that orbit stars other than the Sun. His work involves using telescopes both on the ground and in space, such as NASA's Kepler space telescope. He leads a global team that is using a worldwide network of telescopes to study the atmospheres of exoplanets, and he is also Deputy Lead of the Exoplanet Science Working Group for the upcoming European Space Agency Euclid mission. His interests extend to the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, where he has recently proposed a new smart strategy based on Game Theory that could improve our chances of making contact with any intelligent alien life that might be out there. In this episode, Eamonn talks about his work at Jodrell Bank, the study of exoplanets and Astrophysics. He explains the process behind his research, the recent incredible scientific discoveries through highly complex telescopes, and his thought process on intelligent alien life based on astronomical findings. On this addition of Beyond the Forbidden I had the honor to have Len Kasten on the show to discuss his newest book that is available for preorder titled Dark Fleet: The Secret Nazi Space Program and the Battle for the Solar System. I apologize for the audio as Len and myself were both having difficulties with our internet. We conducted this interview through our phones. BELOW IS THE BOOK DESCRIPTION FROM AMAZON:Reveals the Nazi-Reptilian infiltration of the U.S. government, their secret space program, and their slave colonies throughout the solar system • Details “Operation Paperclip,” which enabled Nazis and their Reptilian partners to infiltrate the U.S. military-industrial complex, including NASA and the CIA • Reveals their interstellar space ports in Antarctica and on Mars, their base on the Moon, and their alien technologies, including nano-technology, antigravity propulsion, mass mind control, and hyperdimensional teleportation capabilities • Shares testimonies from American and British “supersoldiers” who participated in the “20 and Back” age-regression programs, revealing advanced human technology and our Space Armada that constitutes a counter-balance to the Nazi Dark Fleet The Nazis did not really lose World War II. They made it appear that way in order to divert attention from the alliance between the Fourth Reich and the race of aliens known as the Reptilians--an ancient galactic civilization obsessed with conquest and domination. After the German surrender in 1945, the Nazi-Reptilian alliance infiltrated the U.S. military-industrial complex. Through “Operation Paperclip,” the Nazis and Reptilians removed their political opponents, such as the Kennedys, and moved into policy-making positions in post-war America, infiltrating aerospace companies, banking, media, and the U.S. government, including NASA and the CIA. But their real target was not the United States--it was the solar system. As Len Kasten reveals in startling detail--including revelations of antigravity propulsion technology, alien techniques of mass mind control, and hyperdimensional teleportation capabilities--the Nazi-Reptilian alliance used their newfound power, wealth, and influence to launch a Secret Space Program with interstellar spaceports in Antarctica and on Mars as well as an eleven-story base of operations on the Moon. They commenced mining and manufacturing operations on Mars and Ceres, forming colonies there and elsewhere in the solar system. And, most shocking, they have used thousands of human slaves, easily transported in their spaceships, for both work and sexual exploitation. Sharing testimonies from American and British “supersoldiers” who participated in the “20 and Back” age-regression programs, Kasten reveals the various forces inside and outside government that are resisting the Nazis and thwarting Reptilian attempts to achieve total dominance of the planet and the solar system. The U.S.-led Secret Space Program has its own fleet of spaceships, the Solar Warden Space Armada, which patrols the edges of the solar system and poses a growing threat to the Nazi Dark Fleet. YOU CAN PRE-ORDER THIS BOOK THROUGH AMAZON HERE:https://www.amazon.com/Dark-Fleet-Secret-Program-Battle/dp/1591433444/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1574045000&sr=8-4 LEN KASTENS PREVIOUS BOOKS BELOW:Secret Journey to Planet Serpo: A True Story of Interplanetary Travelamzn.com/289FAQERZ5STZ Alien World Order: The Reptilian Plan to Divide and Conquer the Human Raceamzn.com/1591432391
