QUOTES FOR REFLECTION“Revival is the manifestation of the glory, power, and blessing of the Son of God among His people…. Revival is ultimately Christ Himself, seen, felt, heard, living, active, moving in and through His body on earth.”~Stephen Olford (1918-2004), Zambian-born pastor in Manhattan “We can have no power from Christ unless we live in a persuasion that we have none of our own.”~John Owen (1616-1683), English church leader, theologian, and academic “The Lord can do in day what takes us years.”~Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (1899-1981), Welsh minister “…we must not suppose that even if we succeeded in making everyone nice we should have saved their souls. A world of nice people, content in their own niceness, looking no further, turned away from God, would be just as desperately in need of salvation as a miserable world – and might even be more difficult to save….”~C.S. Lewis (1898-1963) in his book Mere Christianity “…true Christians consider themselves as not satisfying some rigorous creditor, but as discharging a debt of gratitude. Accordingly, theirs is not the stinted return of a constrained obedience, but the large and liberal measure of voluntary service…. This animating principle…inspires [the Christian's] devotion and causes him to delight in the worship of God. This fills him with consolation, peace and gladness, and sometimes even enables him to rejoice with joy unspeakable.”~William Wilberforce (1759-1833), social reformer, in A Practical View of Real Christianity “The reason the apostles preached the message of Jesus Christ was not for individual conversion alone. The apostles did not preach so that there simply would be a new me, but so that there would be a new we.”~Thabiti M. Anyabwile, pastor and author “Living according to the truth is the most authentic way to live because it's what we were made for.” ~Alisa Childers, singer, songwriter, and authorSERMON PASSAGEActs 2 (ESV)John 15 26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. 27 And you also will bear witness…. John 16 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment…. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. Acts 2 1 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting…. 5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. 7 And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “…we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” 14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them… 22  “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— 23 this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 24 God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it…. 33 Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing…. 36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.” 37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit…. 41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls. 42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

QUOTES FOR REFLECTION“She had studied the universe all her life, but had overlooked its clearest message: For small creatures such as we the vastness is bearable only through love.”~Carl Sagan (1934-1996), famed astronomer, in his 1985 novel Contact “The mark of Christian discipleship is love—love of the kind that Jesus exercised toward his followers, love visible enough that men will recognize it as belonging to those people who follow Jesus.”~Thabiti M. Anyabwile, pastor and author, in What Is a Healthy Church Member? “The people who heard Jesus' disciples proclaiming the Good News were as impressed by what they saw as by what they heard. They saw lives that had been transformed—men and women who were ordinary in every way except for the fact that they seemed to have found the secret of living. They evinced a tranquility, simplicity, and cheerfulness that their hearers had nowhere else encountered…. “The only power that can effect transformations of the order we have described is love…. “God's love is precisely what the first Christians did feel. They had experienced Jesus' love and had become convinced that Jesus was God incarnate. Once that love reached them, it could not be stopped. Melting the barriers of fear, guilt, and self-centeredness, it poured through them like a torrential stream and heightened the love they had hitherto felt for others to the point where the difference in degree became a difference in kind. A new quality, Christian love, was born. Conventional love is evoked by lovable qualities in the beloved, but the love people encountered from Christ embraced sinners and outcasts, Samaritans and enemies. It gave, not prudentially in order to receive, but because giving was its nature.”~Huston Smith (1919-2016), world religions scholar who taught at MIT and SyracuseSERMON PASSAGEJohn 17:20-26 (ESV)1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, 2 since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. 3 And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. 4 I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.6 “I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7 Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you. 8 For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. 9 I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours. 10 All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. 11 And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.20 “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me. 24 Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. 25 O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me. 26 I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.”

According to 'Trane himself, as written in the liner notes to A Love Supreme, “The music herein is presented in four parts. The first is entitled "ACKNOWLEDGEMENT", the second, "RESOLUTION", the third, "PURSUANCE", and the fourth and last part is a musical narration of the theme, "A LOVE SUPREME" which is written in the context; it is entitled "PSALM".” It is also this Psalm, this meditation, part of which I read at the outset, that Coltrane would place on a stand and play as he performed, producing/reproducing what he said is a musical narration of the – Love Supreme. Alice Coltrane, a multi-instrumental genius and enlightened spiritual leader is not just Coltrane's wife. She started her journey before meeting Coltrane. And because of this set her path to cultivate rhythms that can heal the world just as John Coltrane discovered he could do. It could be surmised that her presence in John Coltrane life was divine. It was guided by universal law - a law that states everything is in rhythm, everything is in constant motion. Everything is vibrational. And as we move through life this constant hum, this vibrational hum is sure to attract its tonal partners. In the November 1967 issue of Ebony in an article titled: Requiem for ‘Trane, Archie Shepp suggests that “he [‘Trane] was a bridge…the most accomplished and comprehensive of the so-called post-bop musicians to make an extension into what is called the avant-garde…” (Shepp, 1967). Something else to consider, specifically in relation to John Coltrane being a bridge, standing in a deeper tradition, according to Youngquist in A Pure Solar World Sun Ra and the Birth of Afrofuturism, “in the mid-fifties Sun Ra gave a broadsheet entitled “Solaristic Precepts” to John Coltrane. On the broadsheets Sun Ra wrote “Warning this treatise is only for Thinking Beings..." (238). A thinking Being, indeed… In an interview years later, Coltrane would state that, “I think music can make the world better and if I'm qualified, I want to do it. I'd like to point out to people the divine in a musical language that transcend words. I want to speak to their souls”. And it was with Alice Coltrane who not only accentuated and amplified Coltrane's ability to synthesis the rhythmic patterns he put together, as he listened to vibrations most of us are unable to, they both became eternal beings, thinking beings who were able to conceive of the Negative reminiscences of Space-Time, as is expressed in Is, Are, Be and reconcepted “AM”. Kristie Anyabwile delivered a message during a workshop at TGC’s 2018 Women’s Conference titled “Living as Titus 2 Women in a Romans 1 World.” Utilizing these two passages of Scripture, Anyabwile presents the problem and offers a solution—that we are living in a state of emergency and we need older and younger women who will actively invest in one another, respectively. The solution, she argues, would not only build the strength of believers to stand against sin, but also serve as a platform for Christian women to participate in the Great Commission, drawing others in need of Christ through the representation and declaration of the gospel.  This episode of The Gospel Coalition Podcast is brought to you by Crossway, publisher of 'Weep with Me: How Lament Opens a Door for Racial Reconciliation' by Mark Vroegop. REFLECTION QUOTES “If churches are to be healthy, then pastors and teachers must be committed to discovering the meaning of Scripture and allowing that meaning to drive the agenda with their congregations.” ~Thabiti M. Anyabwile in his book What Is a Healthy Church Member? “[K]now, at the end of the day, following Jesus is not necessarily designed to be safe. Safety is a natural desire but it can keep us from being like Jesus in the midst of an unsafe world.” ~The Art of Neighboring by Jay Pathak and Dave Runyon “For the church is not a human society of people united by their natural affinities but the Body of Christ, in which all members, however different, (and He rejoices in their differences and by no means wishes to iron them out) must share the common life, complementing and helping one another precisely by their differences.” “The Church exists for nothing else but to draw men into Christ, to make them little Christs. If they are not doing that, all the cathedrals, clergy, missions, sermons, even the Bible itself, are simply a waste of time. God became Man for no other purpose.” ~C. S. Lewis (1898-1963), writer and Oxford professor “The day we find the perfect church, it becomes imperfect the moment we join it.” ~Charles H. Spurgeon (1834-1892), famed London preacher “Wherever we see the Word of God purely preached and heard, there a church of God exists, even if it swarms with many faults.” ~John Calvin (1509-1564), leader of the Protestant Reformation in Geneva “Jesus had the guilty in mind when He hung high and stretched out wide…. He, bare-bodied and face set on joy, became as a slaughtered lamb underneath the wrath of God… Didn't He know that wrath was mine? It even had my name on it. But He knew… Without asking my permission, a good God had come to my rescue.” ~Jackie Hill Perry, writer, poet and hip hop artist SERMON PASSAGE Selected Passages from Titus 1-3 (NIV) Titus 1 5 The reason I left you in Crete was that you might put in order what was left unfinished and appoint elders in every town, as I directed you…. 9 so that [the elders] can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it. 10 For there are many rebellious people, full of meaningless talk and deception…. 12 One of Crete's own prophets has said it: “Cretans are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons.” 13 This saying is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, so that they will be sound in the faith…. 16 They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good. Titus 2 1 You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine. 2 Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance…. 7 In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness 8 and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us…. 11 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good…. Titus 3 1 Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, 2 to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle toward everyone. 3 At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. 4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy…. 8 This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone. 9 But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless…. 14 Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order to provide for urgent needs and not live unproductive lives.

REFLECTION QUOTES “[He experientially knows that he] has done wrong in not rendering to God love and obedience. He feels that he has no excuse to make for not doing it. He feels that his own sinfulness and self-will have led him to refuse to do it. He acknowledges the great guilt of his pride and obstinacy of heart and is truly and deeply sorry for it. His will, subdued and humbled, bows in submission to the will of God; not as if forced to do it, as when a child yields to the will of the parent from the fear of punishment, but freely, fully and cheerfully desires to submit and trust to Christ to aid him in doing it.” “…you cannot truly repent of your sins without at the same time trusting entirely in Christ of the forgiveness of your sins, and your acceptance with God.” ~Thomas H. Gallaudet (1787-1851), educator and advocate for the deaf community on the nature and source of genuine repentance “Hospitality is not so much a task, as a way of living our lives and of sharing ourselves… Hospitality is not first a duty and responsibility; it is first a response of love and gratitude of God's love and welcome to us.” “For leaders of the ancient church, hospitality was a significant context for transcending boundaries and working through respect and recognition. Christian hospitality was to be remedial, counteracting the social stratification of the larger society by providing a modest and equal welcome to everyone.” ~Christine D. Pohl, contemporary author and professor of social ethics “Some people are given to an ‘easy believism' that resists careful curation of their own souls, while others are too easily tempted to doubt and despair. In a church culture, we can love each other both by pointing out evidence of God's grace in each others' lives and by asking tough questions…. By doing both, we help one another avoid the extremes of despair and complacency, and we encourage one another to see ourselves in the light of God's saving work in our souls.” ~Thabiti M. Anyabwile, pastor of Anacostia River Church in metro DC SERMON PASSAGE Titus 2:1-15 (NASB) 1 But as for you, speak the things which are fitting for sound doctrine. 2 Older men are to be temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in faith, in love, in perseverance. 3 Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, 4 so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored. 6 Likewise urge the young men to be sensible; 7 in all things show yourself to be an example of good deeds, with purity in doctrine, dignified, 8 sound in speech which is beyond reproach, so that the opponent will be put to shame, having nothing bad to say about us. 9 Urge bondslaves to be subject to their own masters in everything, to be well-pleasing, not argumentative, 10 not pilfering, but showing all good faith so that they will adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in every respect. 11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, 12 instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age,13 looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, 14 who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds. 15 These things speak and exhort and reprove with all authority. REFLECTION QUOTES “Most modern freedom is at root fear. It is not so much that we are too bold to endure rules; it is rather that we are too timid to endure responsibilities.” “Without authority there is no liberty. Freedom is doomed to destruction at every turn, unless there is a recognized right to freedom. And if there are rights, there is an authority to which we appeal for them.” ~G.K. Chesterton (1874-1936), noted English writer and journalist “Despotism may govern without faith, but liberty cannot.” “When a people's religion is destroyed… then not only will they let their freedom be taken from them, but often they actually hand it over themselves.” ~Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859), French political thinker, famous for his studies on Americans and their way of life “Freedom is when you have the desire, the ability, and the opportunity to do what will leave you with no regrets forever.” ~John Piper (1946-present), pastor and author “A knight does not protect the truth; he lives inside it and the truth protects him.” ~Ethan Hawke in Rules for a Knight “God has assigned [the Church] this illustrious position, and it is unlawful for them to forsake it because—as I said—this was no mere earthly fabrication which was delivered to them. Nor is it a merely human system of opinion that they judge it right to preserve so carefully. It is not an endowment of merely human mysteries that has been committed to them, but truly God himself, who is omnipotent, the Creator of everything, and invisible, has sent the Truth from heaven—the holy and unfathomable Word—placed him among men and firmly established him in their hearts.” ~Letter to Diognetus (c. In this episode, Thabiti and Nick talk about political party as a source of identity, and discuss the dangers of letting that identity supplant our identities as Christians. We talk about the American Founders' approach to political tribalism, how tribalism is deeply rooted in the division of humankind into tribes in Genesis 10, and why saying something as simple as "I am a Republican" or "I am a Democrat" may go too far for a Christian. Finally, we try to give some practical guidance for how to approach political differences within the church. Biblical references: Genesis 10 - the Tower of Babel and the table of nations. Ephesians 2:11-22 and 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 - we are one in Christ, and Christ is our identity. 1 Corinthians 3:1-9 - be wary of divisions between Christians. Romans 16:17-20 and Titus 3:10-11 - be wary of those who bring division. Other references: Federalist 10 and James Madison on the question of faction - defining faction as "a number of citizens, whether amounting to a minority or majority of the whole, who are united and actuated by some common impulse of passion, or of interest, adverse to the rights of other citizens, or to the permanent and aggregate interests of the community." In this episode, Thabiti and Nick provide an overview of an age-old question of politics: what is the role of government? We trace the development of our modern ideas about this to the 18th-century Enlightenment - noting that while it wasn't a Christian phenomenon, Enlightenment thinkers had an uneasy alliance with the church that papered over some of the fault lines we're beginning to see emerge today. We talk about different reasons for government to be bigger or smaller, but note that this specific question is beside the point. The real question is: is government doing what it should do? Biblical references: Genesis 9:5 - God's words to Noah after the flood, establishing that government is ordained by God as a coercive force, with the power of the sword. Romans 13:1 - the governing authorities - all of them - have been established by God. And, with a few limited exceptions, we are to submit to them. Genesis 41:46-57 - Joseph, in his service to Pharaoh, is just one example of a God-ordained role of government (in this case, a very statist, interventionist one!). Isaiah 1:16-17 - God's commands to Judah set the tone for what a people and its government should do: seek justice, correct oppression, plead the widow's cause. Proverbs 31:1-9 - God's commands to King Lemuel are a further manual for what it means to govern wisely. 1 Timothy 2:1-2 - we should pray for our leaders in government - all of them! Other references: The West Wing, Season 1, Episode 12: Toby Ziegler on whether "The Era of Big Government is Over" Adam Smith, The Wealth of Nations: "It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest." Self-interest is the engine of capitalism; we shouldn't be surprised when it sometimes produces bad results. Max Weber's much more strident take on Genesis 9:5 - that the state has a monopoly on the use of force. Produced by Ben Brophy. The purpose of this episode is to answer that one question - what are we doing starting a podcast on politics? Thabiti and Nick both discuss how they became Christians and what brought us to this topic. Thabiti reminds us that Christ's exhortation in Matthew 28:19-20 is for us to obey in every aspect of our lives, including this question of what a government does. He also notes that his blog was where he began writing about these topics, especially in recent years. Nick talks about his own journey to become a Christian. He started both of us thinking about doing something like this when, in the runup to the 2016 election, he had an idea for a blog post that Thabiti published on that same blog. The response was... discouraging. Nick followed up with a longer piece that tried to unpack things a little bit more. And then the 2016 election happened - and both of us felt like we didn't understand evangelicalism any more. We worried that its political convictions amounted to little more than kneejerk submission to the Republican Party. But we wondered if a new generation of Christians might be looking for something different - not a lurch in the opposite direction, necessarily, but an evangelical politics that is rightly uneasy with absolute commitments to any particular political ideology. In a word, a prophetic politics. Hence this podcast. If you're listening, hope you enjoy it! Produced by Ben Brophy. John MacArthur's ‘Statement on Social Justice’ Is Aggravating Evangelicals

Last week, John MacArthur and a dozen other Christian leaders launched a website presenting The Statement on Social Justice & the Gospel. In the statement, the signatories claim that the social justice movement endangers Christians with “an onslaught of dangerous and false teachings that threaten the gospel, misrepresent Scripture, and lead people away from the grace of God in Jesus Christ.” Over the course of 14 sections, the Statement addresses cultural narratives “currently undermining Scripture in the areas of race and ethnicity, manhood and womanhood, and human sexuality” and argues that a secular threat is infiltrating the evangelical church. At the time of this recording, the Statement has received around 7,000 signatures. The statement comes at a time when a series of blog posts and sermons attacking social justice from MacArthur, a popular California pastor and author, had sparked controversy in the evangelical community. The harsh reaction to MacArthur’s ideas was shaped by the events of the past four years, says Washington DC pastor and Gospel Coalition council member Thabiti Anyabwile. “They land in the midst of an evangelical movement that is already fraying and fracturing under the weight of the last five years, if I’m dating this back to the Mike Brown shooting and the fallout,” said Anyabwile. “Evangelicalism as a movement splintered instantly as to how they understood that issue and different quarters circled one another in suspicion and sometimes outright attack.” Further, the statement’s specific attacks on particular nomenclature have been troublesome because its drafters haven’t defined their terms, says Anyabwile. “They’re so imprecise in the terms that are used and defining those terms. What exactly is meant by social justice?” he said. “What are we talking about when we talking about reconciliation or intersectionality or critical race theory? These are things that are thrown out there that are red meat for one quarter of evangelicalism and might be acceptable parlance, depending on how you define it, in other quarters.” Anyabwile joined associate digital producer Morgan Lee and theology editor Caleb Lindgren to offer context about MacArthur’s remarks, explain how intersectionality shows up in the Bible, and what church unity (not uniformity) should look like.

Last week, John Kasich and Ted Cruz suspended their presidential campaigns, making Donald Trump the presumptive Republican nominee. The news left many evangelicals praying for Nebraska senator and avid Trump critic Ben Sasse to jump into the race as a third party candidate and sharing Russell Moore’s article on voting for “the lesser of two evils.” D.C.-based pastor and writer Thabiti Anyabwile took a different tact. “Let the hate begin,” he tweeted earlier this week. “But if choice is between [Hillary] Clinton and Trump, I'm voting Clinton. I'll go back to not voting when this man is defeated!” But a lot of people aren’t convinced. Just prior to Cruz’s concession, polls showed anywhere between 16 percent to 24 percent of churchgoing evangelical voters faced with a Trump vs. Clinton matchup, would choose to stay home or vote for a third-party candidate. (Here’s a deep dive into the numbers.) Anyabwile, who has emphatically stated that he is no fan of Clinton, has abstained from voting in recent previous presidential elections. “For the last several elections, I’ve been that principled guy saying ‘I just can’t vote for anybody,’” Anyabwile said. “But this particular election has brought me to a place where I’m staring my principles in the face and I have a different type of crisis of conscience. I can’t opt for a personal type of quietism here, where I palliate my own conscience. I actually have to inform my conscience.” Anyabwile joins Katelyn and Morgan on this week’s Quick to Listen to discuss third party options, what it’s historically like to vote as an African American, and what makes the Trump option different. (5:49) In response to Trump's likely Republican win, many Christians are advocating for a third-party option. Thabiti, you have explicitly critiqued that option. Why? (15:42) What does it mean to inform your conscience? How should our consciences play a role in determining how to vote? How can they also mislead us? (17:35) It’s rare that most people have found candidates who represent all their interests—in fact, many times minorities have had candidates representing their parties who have little love or interest in serving their needs. To what extent are those calling for a third party candidate showing their privilege in expecting to have a candidate that primarily agrees with them?

This is important: We are not Reformed because the Reformers are our heroes. If we genuinely Reformed it’s because we believe that “Reformed” is an adequate summary of what the Bible teaches about key points of doctrine and a particular worldview. May God give us grace to be the kind of people who build our theology from the Bible up. May God’s word rule over us.

Young Readers - Reviews of Monster and Hereville: How Mirka Caught a Fish

Gwen and Andy are back this month to discuss two new graphic novels for young readers. First up, they discuss Monster  (Amistad/Harper Collins), a book for teens by Walter Dean Myers, adapted by Guy A. Sims and with art by Dawud Anyabwile. Based on the multi-award-winning young adult novel by Myers, the graphic novel version of Monster chronicles the tension-filled trial of Steve Harmon, a African American teen being tried as an accessory to the murder of a convenience store clerk. Gwen and Andy both agree that Anyabwile's stunning black-and-white art delivers a powerfully effective treatment of this famous novel and in some ways enhances an already stunning look at how society looks at race and identity. Next, the two people with PhDs look at a book for younger readers, Barry Deutsch's Hereville: How Mirka Caught a Fish (Amulet/Abrams). If the title sounds familiar, that's because How Mirka Caught a Fish is actually the third book in the Hereville series, following How Mirka Got Her Sword and How Mirka Met a Meteorite. But no worries! Gwen and Andy give you just enough info about the first two books to bring you up to speed without giving away any major spoilers. Mirka is an 11-year-old orthodox Jewish girl who has adventures fighting trolls, encountering meteors, and even time-traveling, and as much as Gwen and Andy like the first two volumes, they think this third may be the best of the bunch. And while Monster and the Hereville books may appear to be vastly different, Gwen and Andy find that they share some interesting similarities. As an added bonus, Gwen and Andy also discuss four additional current titles that listeners will want to check out. (But you'll have to listen to the podcast to find out what those books are!)
