Episode 40 starts with a brief follow-up on our reports about the growing controversy surrounding a court judgement assessing the city a $5M liability to Gem Equities in the Parker Lands dispute, and a complaint to the Integrity commissioner about the role played by Coun. John Orlikow in the wrongdoing: There's 101 Reasons Why Winnipeg Council Must Review Orlikow's Role In $5M Court Ruling Coun. Eadie Defends Orlikow After Integrity Commissioner Asked To Investigate Next, our investigation continues into the fight faced by residents, home owners and businesses in Point Douglas to get any relief from the rampant public disorder connected to the entrenchment of homeless camps in the area. You'll hear behind the scenes details of a terse reply a homeowner in South Point Douglas gave to a letter from a Manitoba Public Safety director- "Boilerplate responses are not action." After the DoJ official got taken to task for sidestepping responsibility for resident safety, a small but appreciated enforcement action was taken by police about 48 hours later and we have eyewitness accounts. Cause and effect? Hard to say, but it's easy to say that the TGCTS coverage of brought CBC to the table. Marty Gold reviews their report about the homeless encampments and the comments of a community leader. The current situation of intimidation, violence, fear, theft, vandalism, and murder, flows from a failed hands-off approach by the City of Winnipeg that started under former Mayor, Brian Bowman. "The disruption in lives and society is huge and I don't see it getting better." Listen carefully to what was said about the current Mayor and the area councilor who went on a tour of the problem area and offered no action. Marty describes the proof City Hall has failed the property owners and citizens of Point Douglas: the current-day experience of anxious days and sleepless nights caused by garbage, filth and round the clock criminal activity. How much did it cost to replace an industrial air conditioner unit after Pt. Douglas vagrants climbed the roof to steal the copper? It's unacceptable. TGCTS will continue to shine a spotlight on the crime and abuse that is causing residents to sell off their homes and flee. Our podcast discussing the behind-the-scenes conduct of Councilor John Orlikow with City officials thwarting a developer's plans, brought action from listeners, and re-action from one of Orlikow's supporters on City Council. Last week listeners heard directly from the King's Bench court decision, a $5M ruling that two City of Winnipeg planners acted outside of their authority to stall and delay development applications from Andrew Marquess for the Parker Lands project. Justice Shawna McCarthy wrote: "the impetus and motivation for this deliberate interference with the plaintiffs' applications were primarily the wishes and demands of the area councillor, and the desire of some public servants to accommodate those wishes.” ( Here is our report: There's 101 Reasons Why Winnipeg Council Must Review Orlikow's Role In $5M Court Ruling ) In Episode 39 this week, the controversy heats up - Orlikow told the media he "will keep an open mind" as Marquess and Gem Equities proceed with the Fulton Grove plan. But one resident who heard our report laid a formal complaint against Orlikow - with the City Integrity Commissioner, Sherri Walsh. "John Orlikow should be thoroughly investigated by your commission and during this period of investigation, which should have already started, he should recuse himself from any vote, decision, action as it relates to the Parker Lands' Development. He has lost all his integrity & credibility with respect to this Developer Led project." In Part One, you'll hear the complaint that was sent to council overseer Sherri Walsh, the movie character Orlikow was compared to, and the stern admonition in the complaint directed to Mayor Scott Gillingham by one of his opponents last fall, Don Woodstock. Then came the reaction to our report, and to Woodstock's complaint. 14:55 - Part 2 - Emails from Mynarski Coun. Ross Eadie claimed Orlikow should face no consequences: To Marty Gold: "if a councillor cites issues where the city could get ripped off by private sector capitalists, they are doing their job – thanks John."  To the complainant, copied to Walsh and fellow council members: "Give it up Mr. Woodstock." Eadie had a few more comments in those emails you will want to hear, about some Parker Land history and also about Marquess. His remarks are sure to generate even more discussion about how John Orlikow and City Hall handle developers, and what the Court ruled was and wasn't legal in the process. Please share this 25 minute podcast! We encourage the public to be informed of the evidence in the case- and to let their councilors and Mayor Gillingham know what they think should be done to hold the planners, city administration, and Coun. Orlikow accountable. July 11 2023 - Assiniboine Park's PR Problem: The Ten Commandments Might Offend Someone

The Great Canadian Talk Show

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 11, 2023 24:04

Who's offended by the Ten Commandments? Apparently the bigwigs at the helm of our showcase public park in Tuxedo didn't want to find out. And if you weren't aware that the Assiniboine Park Conservancy Board of Directors kicked the can on their problem over to Winnipeg City Hall, neither was Marty Gold - until an outraged listener tripped over the paper trail. * Join our Facebook group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/TGCTS In a development almost completely ignored by the local media, the stalemate landed with an 'advisory committee' which conducted yet another dubious public consultation process. They're still pondering what to recommend. In the next year councilors may have to vote on whether to A) re-install a monument donated to the City in 1965 depicting the Biblical two tablets - removed during park pavilion renovations - or B) keep it out of public view lest some angry woke cranks protest against yet another historic site that represents our society's most common values. The 10 Commandments (or Aseret Hadibrot, “The Ten Statements,” in Hebrew) were communicated by G‑d to the people of Israel at Mount Sinai, 50 days after the Exodus from Egypt. The event is known as the Giving of the Torah. G‑d then carved the Ten Commandments onto two tablets of stone, which he gave to Moses.  Hear how, as part of an international campaign to help guide troubled youth, the Fraternal Order of Eagles presented the monument to the City, and it resided in AssinIboIne Park until construction of the "Leaf Diversity Gardens" in 2017. Then the APC Board, who lease and operate the 'Crown Jewel' of Winnipeg, started to squirm. "While the religious monument is part of Winnipeg's history, APC's goal as a not for profit organization entrusted to steward Assiniboine Park and its assets is to nurture a sense of community within our Park that makes all feel welcome, accepted and comfortable to be themselves." Are those actual people with any genuine legitimacy who need to be catered to? You'll hear about the back-and-forth as Park officials tried to unload the City asset, and the complaint APC officials filed with the advisory group about the display potentially creating a "negative impact" making the Park "less welcoming for some members of the community" if it was restored. As Marty describes, according to the gift-givers they were first told to take it back by a group of "community leaders" who fear the anti-religion "diversity" mob more than they fear insulting the vast majority of their actual donors and users (aka traditionalists and believers in God.) Listen to information from a City Councilor who wasn't so sure the advisory committee should have been handed the file, and about the pushback by over 1100 signatories to a petition whose organizer said “Someone needs to hold the Conservancy accountable.” As a Hebrew school graduate, Marty airs a few strong views in Episode 35- is this an attack on not only the Christian donors of the monument but on Winnipeg's Jews and Muslims too? Do city councilors risk an embarassing outcome either way? Hear about the "Committee of Community Members" the issue was delegated to, and the "Welcoming Winnipeg" feedback process which had a 2 week window for comment. If a resident didn't comb the City website daily they would have had no idea of the controversy or that their opinion was (supposedly) wanted. Now they will. And there will be a follow-up in the next 2 weeks as more information has been received from inside City Hall, and an additional, barely-read newspaper brief about the petition drive was unearthed. ********* Wondering how the media missed covering this story last year? This is obviously an important issue and you'd think would have come up in the civic election... In addition to coaching middle school track and cross country, he is heavily involved with the Manitoba Runners' Association, Teds Run for Literacy, the Winnipeg 10&10 and the Manitoba Marathon. In this episode Aldo tells us about being “crippled by a 4-year old” many years ago and how his journey through rehab and back to running inspired him to write one heck of a poem titled Ode to My Lateral Meniscus. More recently while dealing with an assortment of common running niggles, he put pen to paper once again with Bag of Pain. Two of the most fun ways Aldo gives back is through his weekend pop-ups all summer long throughout Winnipeg, as well as the Polar Bare run every January 1st in Assiniboine Park. Be sure to listen to the very end when he tells us about the Not Since Moses race in Nova Scotia every August. Ode to my Lateral Meniscus There's a lexicon of terms out there and they're not hard to findA few of them are great to use when meniscus come to to mind For you can call it healthy or you can call it fineLike the beautiful aroma of a nine ounce glass of wineYou can say that it's dependable, just like a St.BernardWho chases away vandals trespassing in your yard. You can say that it's pristine as a freshly poured draft beerA welcomed cold libation when the finish line is near. You can say that it's as mighty as a herd of elephants With all the durability of brand new denim pants. You can say that it's delightful like a steeping pot of tea, This most integral part of an articulating knee. You can say it is hearty or you can say that it is soundJust like the wisdom of a friend you like to have around. You can tell me that it's sturdy or you can say that it is tough There are not limits to what you say but the right word is enough. You can say “spectacular”or you can say “Robust”But for you to use the proper term is definitely a must. So choose your words quite carefully my friends as you now know what I meanFor to call it “unremarkable” is really quite obscene!Resources we discussed in this episode:Kathy Wiens on Inspired Soles (Ep 27)Not Since Moses RaceWinnipeg Hash House Harriers Favourite Mantra: You wreck me (Tom Petty)Favourite Place to Run: Assiniboine ParkBucket List Race: Race in every province; Chicago Marathon (or half)Favourite Running Movie: Run Fat Boy RunFavourite Post Run Indulgence: Bacon breakfastWe love hearing from you! On Wednesday, about 100 people gathered in Assiniboine Park to hear Councilor Kevin Klein declare he was aiming for the top spot at 510 Main Street. "The system is broken. The system is not working for you." After winning election in 2018 as the representative for the ward of Charleswood-Tuxedo-Westwood, Klein spoke his mind at City Hall and established that he was no fan of the approach Mayor Brian Bowman took to Councilors or to the taxpayers. Marty Gold was at the campaign launch and in this episode, he describes who announced their endorsement of Klein at the event. He discusses some of the specific comments Klein made about public safety, and on the treatment of residents, public service unions, and community groups (like Wise Up Winnipeg) when they raise concerns to council and bureaucrats. At 5.10 - You'll hear Kevin Klein give his promise of how leadership will be delivered if he is elected - "They all want to hang on to the EPC system... (his administration) will hear the truth of what's going on on the streets of Winnipeg.... Respect, bravery, listening to learn, collaborative teamwork - that's real leadership." He promised to establish a Council Information Officer and insisted the City needs to add more ambulances and cop cars. At 11.10 - Marty reviews Klein's remarks and sets up another short clip, where Klein mentioned an issue we had discussed in our interview with Mynarski candidate Aaron McDowell - the new North End police station. At 14.45 - Listen to why Klein maintains that that new police station is a serious misstep. He claims the construction plan is based on old standards that exceeds both the reality of how current district police stations operate, AND the ability of taxpayers to pay for. At 15.44 - Marty returns to wrap up the Klein launch coverage and touches on how this might shift support among the field on the political right. He comments on a few other candidates and on reaction to our coverage of the Probe Poll last week that placed Glen Murray in front of the pack, and reflects some views he's heard of Murray's campaign and political history. A short and fast-paced 23 minute episode! ********* ONLY TGCTS will give Mayoral and Council candidates extended airtime to introduce their campaign ideas to the voters. History is an important facet of mokuhanga. It goes without saying that whatever we learn as printmakers comes from somewhere else. It's up to us as to whether we embrace it or push it away. In this episode of The Unfinished Print I look to the past, at artist Walter J Phillips, who's prints I have been a fan of long before I took up the art form myself. As a British Canadian, Phillips used Canada as his muse, it's ruggedness, power, and humanity to make his woodblock prints. Phillips was a bit of a Renaissance man, with his hand in many aspects of society and art in Winnipeg, Manitoba, from 1913-1940; and then teaching in Banff, Alberta, Canada. He was a water colourist, made etches, also tried his hand at oils but it's his woodblock prints which have always been the most powerful of his artistic forays. Joining me on this episode is curator Sophie Lavoie, of The Muse/Douglas Family Art Centre, a museum and gallery located in Kenora, Ontario. Sophie curated the popular Phillips Interpreted show which ran from July 16th - September 11th, 2021. She also guest curated the amazing McMichael Gallery show, Walter J Phillips: At The Lake which ran from February 15th - October 12th, 2020. Her knowledge about the life and times of Walter J. Phillips is what makes this episode special for me. Early 20th Century wood cuts - Sophie brings up in our interview the renaissance of early 20th wood cuts in New York. With the little bit of research of this subject it seems that many artists during the Great Depression found wood cut as an inexpensive way of creating. During this time was the Regionalist  Movement where farms, industry and labour in New York were being documented through the wood cut. The woodcut revival of the early 20th century in the US and Canada also, according to one source, was connected to the Art Deco movement, as well as German Expressionism. Not to mention the popularity of Hiroshige and of Japonisme of late 19th Century Europe. The sources for my definition can be found, here, and here. Please reach out to me if you have access to more information, as I find this fascinating. Urushibara Yoshijirō - (1888-1953) was a Japanese carver and printmaker who lived in London, England from 1910-1940. He had arrived during the Anglo-Japanese Exhibition of 1910 and stayed until the Pacific War when he moved back to Japan. As a carver and printmaker he collaborated with many artists in England especially Frank Brangwyn (1867-1956). It has been said that Urushibara was a great influence on Phillips and his career as a woodblock printmaker from 1925. Orientalism and The Arts and Crafts Movement - Sophie speaks a bit on the idea of Orientalism in art and how it influenced artists in the arts and crafts movement of Walter J. Phillips. This is a very large topic to cover and can't really be done here. Briefly, Orientalism in art history, has roots in how Western artists of the 19th Century saw and represented Western Asian peoples in romantic and “mysterious” ways. It wasn't until Edward Said (1935-2003) wrote his Orientalism in 1978 which critiques the concept of Orientalism as a racist and hegemonic, and an ultimately inaccurate and romantic, representation of the East. John P. Crabb Gallery - located in Annisiboine Park is a gallery dedicated to Walter J. Phillips and the collection of Philips' work acquired by Crabb himself. Maggie and Dave continue their garden touring, and set up the podcast studio under a big shade tree in the beautiful English Garden at Assiniboine Park. Summer is starting to shift into fall and your hosts start this week's episode noticing how much the mood has changed in the garden, even in the last week. This does not stop them from being excited about what's next, teasing garden party plans (3:05) and sharing their favourite plants (Sugar Baby watermelon at 3:55 & garlic bulbils at 7:20).  Kelly F. posted this episode's timely question of the week, all about bringing herbs indoors (9:08), and Dave and Maggie offer a variety of resources to help gardeners find success with indoor herbs. Then the duo dive right into the topic at hand, chatting up the benefits of fall gardening (13:03), consider timing for fall seed starting (17:48), discuss fertilizing fall garden beds (19:30) and then rank various fall crops in terms of cold tolerance (23:30), including several that have “mind blowing” cold tolerance (33:45)! Finally Dave and Maggie muse on how lessons around fall sowing outdoors can teach us valuable lessons about growing edibles indoors as well (35:05).

Whether it's because you have to wait too long, or the light is too short, or it's confusing, or whatever? As a driver, or pedestrian. Although it snowed a week or so after this episode (of course it did, it's Winnipeg), we took advantage of the nice weather for an outdoor episode recorded on a picnic table at Assiniboine Park(!) with up-and-coming folk-punk artist Harley James Flett. In a conversation that goes in all kinds of directions, we talked folk music, Bad Brains, the ins and outs (but mostly outs) of attending music festivals, "chin" songs, the cassette renaissance, Harley's already-prolific Bandcamp catalogue and a lot more.
