The Book of Guilt by Catherine Chidgey. Set in England in 1979, identical 13 year old triplets are part of a Government scheme where they're constantly monitored and medicated. They're overseen by Mothers Morning, Afternoon and Night who teach them from the Book of Knowledge, keep records in the Book of Dreams, and write up their misdemeanours in The Book of Guilt. There's a slow, insidious creep to the narrative and when the Minister for Loneliness decides more social interaction would be good for them, they're sent to visit a family who have secrets and a shocking connection to these boys, as they discover that the world they thought they knew is an entire fiction. From the author of the award winning The Axeman's Carnival, this is remarkable. The Good Mistress by Anne Tiernan. Set in Ireland, this is the story of three women who knew one another as young girls and went on to have very separate lives. Juliet is mourning the loss of her lover, Rory, with whom she'd had a long affair, and who died suddenly; Erica is mourning the loss of her husband, and Maeve mourns the loss of the happy marriage she once had which over time has become increasingly unhappy. They meet up again when Juliet travels from her home in Auckland for Rory's funeral, and find they need to reconcile the realities of love, betrayal and the limits of forgiveness. Australian icon Tex Perkins takes us through his legendary career, from The Cruel Sea & The Beasts recent works, to wild ARIA award nights, his atrocious habits with vinyl records, reissuing his works on vinyl and lots more.  Topics Include: Tex Perkins rehearsing with The Cruel Sea for upcoming gigs. Bringing back "deep cuts" from 30 years ago. Band already prepared the songs before his arrival. Feels like "personal karaoke" returning to old material. Gains fresh perspective on older songs with time. Sometimes writes songs instinctively, not from personal experience. Song "Hard For You" channeled rage he hadn't experienced. Recorded with Kid Congo Powers from Bad Seeds. ARIA Awards incident clarified - didn't stab anyone. Hit someone with a glass at an after-party. Molly Meldrum was present during the altercation. Lived with Jules Normington of Phantom Records. Paid rent by washing Jules' dishes. Had access to Jules' extensive record collection. Especially enjoyed 60s punk and garage rock records. Met John Foy, who was pedantic about record handling. Music scattered across many different record labels. Controls some albums, but not all. Universal owns The Cruel Sea and some Beasts albums. Axeman's Jazz recorded and mixed in six hours. Recent album "Ultimo" recorded differently - basic tracks then laptop. Modern recording allows more experimentation without studio costs. Prefers vinyl album lengths around 18-20 minutes per side. Three Legged Dog being released on three vinyl sides. Spanish reissues were "handshake deals" with unclear accounting. Appreciates unashamedly Australian content in newer bands. Newer bands don't hide their Australian accents. Never experienced censorship of his music. Had releases in different regions without his knowledge. No accounting from Big Time label after bankruptcy. Performed with The Legendary Stardust Cowboy in 1985. "Ledge" known for having "world's worst record" - Paralyzed. Backed Ledge with James Baker, Spencer Jones, Lachlan McLeod. Ledge progressively stripped during his performance. Threw Frisbee paper plates with drawings into the audience. Todd C Elliott is an investigative journalist who writes true crime novels. Todd's latest book is called Axes of Evil. This book tells the tale of the Axe Man murders from early 20th century. Beyond Ax murderers, Todd has also written about the New Orleans connection to the JFK assassination. Get Axes of Evil on Amazon amzn.to/3Ys0iTH About the Ax Man Murders.   The ax-man murders of 1912 in Louisiana and Texas leave a bloody trail of evidence that points to the largest, unsolved serial killing in history of the United States. It's a tale of ritual murder, voodoo mayhem, and wholesale killings that leads the reader on a shocking train ride across two states and into the chapters of a real American horror story. The fiendish slayings of 10 sleeping families nestled in their beds is only the beginning of the terrifying account of a true crime that remains unsolved. Axes of Evil sheds light on an unwritten part of American history and uncovers the American “Jack the Ripper."

(The Axeman's Jazz) *** The investigation of an apparent suicide in 1953 led to an unbelievable theory… not only had the victim used LSD years earlier, but it was quite possible it was forced upon him by the Central Intelligence Agency. (The CIA and LSD) *** You don't often hear of people being struck and killed by lightning – at least not nowadays. But pick up a paper from the early 1900s and you'd think people were doing it as a hobby. (Death By Electrical Storm) *** January 30th, 1835 was the date of the first attempt at assassinating a sitting U.S. President – Andrew Jackson. That fact itself doesn't warrant placement in Weird Darkness, seeing as the attempt failed – but the story leading up to the attempt, and the attempt itself, certainly earn their place in this episode. (The President and the Madman) *** I'll end the episode in the Chamber of Comments, but before that, my last story will the most disturbing one of the episode. Most ghosts are seemingly passive or even benevolent, appearing to scare people only by accident, never by intent. But then there are the stories of violent and angry ghosts – spirits that not only bring terror, but also bloodshed and even death by their own ghostly hands. Tonight, will be a treat as we discuss some of the most baffling unsolved murders of the 20th century with my special guest Jenny Ashford discussing her book Faceless.     What is it about unsolved murders that still fascinates us long after the cases have gone cold? Is it simply that we enjoy being able to come up with our own theories about what happened to the unfortunate victims? Or are we intrigued by the terrifying possibility that the killers are still out there somewhere?   The Faceless Villain: Volume One is the first in a three volume series that explores the most mysterious and disturbing unsolved murders of the twentieth century. This volume is comprised of the years 1900 through 1959, and includes all of the best known cases of the period, as well as many more lesser-known murders, all presented in a compelling chronological narrative that takes the reader on a grisly journey through the blood-soaked avenues of early twentieth century crime.   Featuring: The Peasenhall Murder. The Seal Chart Murder. The Atlanta Ripper. The Villisca Axe Murders. The Axeman of New Orleans. The Green Bicycle Case. Little Lord Fauntleroy. Hinterkaifeck Farm. The St. Aubin Street Massacre. The Wallace Case. The Atlas Vampire. The Brighton Trunk Crime. The Cleveland Torso Murderer. The Horror in Room 1046. Who Put Bella in the Wych Elm? The Pitchfork Murder. The Sodder Children. In the humid nights of New Orleans in the early years of the 1900's, a shadowy figure prowled the moonlit streets.  “They have never caught me and they never will. They have never seen me, for I am invisible, even as the ether which surrounds your earth. I am not a human being, but a spirit and a fell demon from hottest hell. I am what you Orleanians and your foolish police call the axman.”  Whilst almost certainly not written by any real Axeman, this letter, published in the press during the peak of a series of attacks by a violent perpetrator, struck fear into the hearts of citizens who were already terrified of the brutal, seemingly random violence that had been wrapping the city in a terrifying mystery for almost a decade. Over a century later, the Axeman of New Orleans remains unidentified. Writers and historians sometimes disagree on which cases should be grouped together and whether or not the early cases from 1910-1911 should be included. Join Mike and Gibby as they finish up with part on The Axeman of New Orleans. Most of the Axeman cases followed a pattern: forced entry, an attack with an ax, hatchet, or cleaver, and the perpetrator fleeing the scene quickly, occasionally stealing low-value items. In this second episode, we'll focus on the rest of the attacks, thought to be attributed to the Axeman, a scary letter, and a few potential suspects. We'll look at some famous cases of violent hauntings throughout history. *** (Originally aired November 09, 2020)SOURCES AND REFERENCES FROM THE EPISODE…BOOK: “A Terrible Mistake: The Murder of Frank Olson and the CIA's Secret Cold War Experiments” by H.P.
