Any urban street in America is guaranteed to be lined with popular fast food chains, the readily available nature of their products being the main attraction, with people barely giving a thought to the process behind getting the food from the farm to the table — or more likely, the take-out box. Joining host Robert Scheer on this week’s Scheer Intelligence are two people who dedicated their recent film, “Food and Country,” to understanding this process behind food in the United States and how big business, as usual, has almost complete control of the system. Renowned former food critic for the La Times and New York Times, former editor of Gourmet magazine, author of cookbooks and memoirs and PBS food guru, Ruth Reichl and film director Laura Gabbert discuss some of the key takeaways from the film. Gabbert asserts that big agriculture’s firm grasp on the industry is where the problems begin. Its lobby is amongst the biggest and Gabbert explains that there is no incentive to try and remedy the problems that come from this monopolization of an industry so essential to human survival. “I think that is really the crux of the whole problem, is money in politics,” Gabbert says. Reichl takes it back to what happened after World War II and how the U.S. government made an attempt to fight communism by cheapening the food making process, which turned farms into factories. “Almost everything that's wrong with America comes from that policy. We've destroyed our health, our environment, our communities,” Reichl tells Scheer. The heart of their story lies with the farmers themselves, and how, despite being in charge of the most important aspect of human survival, they still tend to struggle the most in society. Reichl explains their significance in the film, stating, “I just wanted for us to be able to listen to their stories that they tell themselves about what has happened to them and what the American system has done to them.” Check out the film’s website here for screening information.
Miami Ohio vs. Northwestern College Football Pick Prediction 8/31/2024 by Tony T. Miami Ohio at Northwestern—Miami Ohio went 11-3 last year for head coach Chuck Martin who is now in his 11th year. The Redhawks brought back six starters of offense and defense. This was the fifth ranked scoring defense in college football by allowing 15.6 points per game. Offensively they produced only 299 yards per game sitting 123rd. A running game that averaged 3.8 yards per carry with inaccurate passing. Brett Gabbert returns for his season after an injury plagued 2023. Gabbert in eight games last season hit 59.4% of his passes with 8.7 yards per pass attempt.

John Gabbert grew up in his father's business—Gabberts, a popular furniture chain in the midwest—but in the late 1970s he split off on his own. The result was Room & Board, a furniture brand focused on modern design; American manufacturing, and a slow-and-steady pace of growth that has paid off over the decades. On this episode of the podcast, Gabbert speaks with host Dennis Scully about the business book that became his bible, why he refuses to take private equity money and how he got away from the industry's obsession with newness. This episode is sponsored by Loloi Rugs and Hector Finch. This week, Cindy Juyoung Ok speaks with Elisa Gabbert, who joins us from Providence, Rhode Island. Gabbert is the author of six, soon to be seven, collections of essays and poems, including Normal Distance (Soft Skull Press, 2022) and the forthcoming Any Person Is the Only Self (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2024). Ok writes, “For Elisa, seemingly no field, no form, no fondness, is exempt from her thought or, lucky for us, her writing. She is a lover of surprising etymology and misunderstood quotes. She works toward clarity in play and in study.” Today, the two discuss Gabbert's essay “On Self-Pity: Go Eat Worms,” which is part of a new series called “Hard Feelings” that makes its debut in the July/August 2023 issue of Poetry. Gabbert explains why she was excited to write a “spirited defense” of self-pity, and more.
In Sex Depression Animals (Ohio State UP, 2023), Mag Gabbert redefines the bestiary in fiery, insistent, and resistant terms. These poems recast the traumas of her adolescence while charting new paths toward linguistic and bodily autonomy as an adult. Using dreamlike, shimmering imagery, she pieces together a fractured portrait of femininity—one that electrifies the confessional mode with its formal play and rich curiosity. Gabbert examines the origin of shame, the role of inheritance, and what counts as a myth, asking, “What's the opposite of a man? / A woman? A wound? The devil's image?” Mag Gabbert has received a Discovery Award from 92NY's Unterberg Poetry Center and fellowships from the Kenyon Review Writers Workshop and Idyllwild Arts. Isaiah's Servant songs (42:1-9; 49:1-7; 50:4-11; 52:13-53:12) have long held the attention of interpreters and scholars through the ages. Who is this servant and what will he do? Christians have believed based on New Testament teaching (1 Peter 2:21-25) that Jesus is this Servant. But how can that be true? How do we make sense of this scandal?
Laura Gabbert found purpose during the Covid 19 pandemic creating her documentary Food and Country. In collaboration with renowned food writer and critic Ruth Reichl, Gabbert created a film that depicts the early days of the pandemic as told through people on the front lines of local food. From farmers and ranchers in rural America, to fine dining restaurateurs in urban settings, to small minority-owned businesses that are the epicenters of their communities, everyone had to forge a new path to survive. Gabbert even spent time in Ohio with Lee and Bob Jones of The Chef's Garden in Milan, Ohio (about an hour west of Cleveland). The film shares many emotional, personal stories and interviews delivered via Zoom, and beautiful, inspiring visuals from across America that depict the resilience, ingenuity and hope of food producers. While the pandemic is in the rear view mirror for most of us, it will take you back to that time and remind you just how far we've come since. Laura was in town for the Cleveland International Film Festival and her film is now available to watch as part of the CIFF47 Streams program. For details, visit clevelandfilm.org. This episode is presented with support from Chef Douglas Katz and Tomato Monster Heirlooms.

Elisa Gabbert, the Book Review's On Poetry columnist, visits the podcast this week to discuss writing about poetry and her own forthcoming collection of poems, her fourth, “Normal Distance.”“When I'm writing what I would call nonfiction or an essay or just pure prose, I'm really trying to be accurate,” Gabbert says. “I'm not lying, I'm really telling you what I think. There's very minimal distance between my persona on the page and who I really am. And then when I'm writing poetry, that persona really takes on more weight. I'm definitely creating more distance, and it really feels more like fiction or even more like theater, I might say. I'm really more creating a character that's going to be speaking this monologue I'm writing.”Ian Johnson visits the podcast to talk about his review of “Golden Age,” a novel by Wang Xiaobo recently translated by Yan Yan. The novel, set against Mao's Cultural Revolution, made waves in China when it was originally published there in the 1990s.“It was controversial primarily because of sex, there's a lot of sex in the novel,” Johnson says. “The sex is not really described in graphic detail; this isn't Henry Miller or something like that. It's more like they're having sex to make a point: that they're independent people and they're not going to be trampled by the state. And it's very humorous — he talks about sex using all kinds of euphemisms, like ‘commit great friendship,' stuff like that. It's meant to be a sort of parody, a somewhat absurd version of a romance.”Also on this week's episode, Elisabeth Egan and Dave Kim talk about what people are reading. John Williams is the host. Here are the books discussed in this week's “What We're Reading”:“Time Shelter” by Georgi Gospodinov, translated by Angela Rodel“The Displacements” by Bruce Holsinger“The Annotated Wizard of Oz” by L. In this episode, poet and critic Elisa Gabbert (The Unreality of Memory) joins host Catherine Nichols to discuss Ernest Becker's Pulitzer Prize-winning book The Denial of Death. The book draws from psychology and philosophy to develop a theory of human behaviors motivated by fear of death and the desire to influence the world past an individual's natural life span. Three quarterbacks are off the market after Aaron Rodgers decided to stay with the Green Bay Packers and following trades sending Russell Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks to the Denver Broncos and Carson Wentz from the Indianapolis Colts to the Washington Commanders. But there are still plenty of options available for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before they settle on Kyle Trask and/or Blaine Gabbert as their starter for 2022.David Harrison of SB Nation's BucsNation.com examines the remaining players and stacks them above and below his 'Gator Line'...Should Tampa Bay prioritize players like Jimmy Garropolo (San Francisco 49ers), Mitchell Trubisky (Buffalo Bills), Teddy Bridgewater (Denver Broncos), Jameis Winston (New Orleans Saints), Baker Mayfield (Cleveland Browns), Derek Carr (Las Vegas Raiders), Deshaun Watson (Houston Texans), and even Marcus Mariota (Las Vegas Raiders) above or below a Trask and Gabbert combination? And which one of those options could the Bucs look to add along with the two incumbents, as they continue their search for Tom Brady's replacement? We discuss all of that, and also look at an (as of now) updated NFL Draft projection that has the Buccaneers adding offensive lineman Zion Johnson (Boston College), cornerback Tariq Woolen (UTSA), and wide receiver Alec Pierce (Cincinnati). All, on this episode of the Locked On Bucs Podcast!Follow & Subscribe to the Locked On Bucs Podcast on these platforms…Apple: https://apple.co/3iOePFkSpotify: https://spoti.fi/3BwlScYAudacy: https://bit.ly/3FAcIhVGoogle: https://bit.ly/2X0IEdSMegaphone: https://bit.ly/3uZOcSoFollow Locked On Podcast Network on Twitter: https://twitter.com/LockedOnNetworkCheck out all of our NFL Coverage: linktr.ee/lockedonnflFollow James on Twitter: https://twitter.com/JYarcho_BUCSFollow David on Twitter: https://twitter.com/DHarrison82Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Every second of my chat with today's guest caused me to pause and think. Nothing she does is being talked about on social media. She doesn't ask for accolades. She isn't well known. BUT. She is making a difference and changing lives. The bottom line of being a mom cannot be disputed. Nobody cares more about your kids than you. I can't even describe how this thought is manifesting itself into every guest episode, and into so many of my daily thoughts about my boys. We fight for them. We love them. We advocate for them. We make the tough decisions for them…because if WE don't? Than WHO?? You know who. No one. So stop living in fear, Stop doubting your worth. Stop loving in guilt. You are doing amazing. You are doing a most precious job that no one else is!Tune in to today's episode to find out how this mom of five stays sane. Who she turns to for strength, and what her mission field is. Grab a notebook and pen and get ready to be taken to church today! I know I was!Don't be scared, my friend. You got this.I pray today's episode will encourage your heart as you navigate the toughest job you'll ever love. Carlie Gabbert is the director of Cherished, a group of women who are rooted in God, planted in His church, and are passionate about seeing women break free from bondage. They reach out to women currently working in the sex industry, by visiting clubs with a gift which invites them into friendship. Through that friendship they aim to encourage them through prayer, testimony, and the Word of God, in order to help them realize how valuable they are. We talk about the fruit that Carlie has seen through years of ministry, abstinence, modesty, worldly sexuality v biblical sexuality, pole dancing for exercise and much more! This summer marks a jolting return to socializing with friends, family, and seas of strangers. On the street, in museums, in restaurants, and in theaters, many people are faced with a painful contradiction: we want to be around one another more than ever, but months of isolation have made us hostile, exhausted, and even pained—probably more than most of us are willing to admit. Isolation affects the body in a similar way to stress, and in the wake of the pandemic, it's difficult to distinguish between the two. Yet even before COVID-19, loneliness and stress were epidemic in societies that organized themselves out of interdependence in the name of efficiency and individuality. In the July issue of Harper's Magazine, the poet and essayist Elisa Gabbert writes about her own experiences during the pandemic (a “slow-motion crisis of the self”) and the scientific evidence that supports our need for all forms of human interaction. In this week's episode of the podcast, Gabbert candidly speaks with Harper's web editor Violet Lucca about her essay and our collective struggle to recover from the lockdown.
