In this episode, hosts Bill and Chris discuss two Italian horror films, 'The Long Hair of Death' and 'Nothing Underneath', exploring their differences in filmmaking styles from 1961 to 1985. They delve into the gothic themes, character dynamics, and cinematic techniques that define these cult classics, while also reflecting on the evolution of horror cinema and the impact of streaming services on viewing experiences. In this conversation, the hosts delve into the themes of marriage dynamics and character development in Italian horror films, particularly focusing on 'Long Hair of Death' and 'Nothing Underneath.' They discuss the impact of Barbara Steele on the genre, the character arcs presented in these films, and provide their recommendations and ratings. The conversation transitions into a critique of 1980s Italian cinema, highlighting the absurdities and stylistic choices of the era, especially in the giallo subgenre. In this episode, Bill and Chris discuss the soundtrack and cinematography of a giallo film, evaluating its place within the genre. They share their thoughts on the film's final moments, providing recommendations and ratings. The conversation then shifts to a review of 'Tremors 4', where Bill expresses his disdain for the film's quality. Finally, Reverend Scott joins to discuss the new 'Nosferatu' film, highlighting its strengths and weaknesses.
In this chapter we learn how Roger Corman and Richard Matheson devised a second cinematic foray in the world of Edgar Allan Poe, this time plunging horror icons Vincent Price and Barbara Steele in the the nightmares of The Pit and Pendulum (1961).

With Halloween only 21 days away, folk horror blogger Rowan Lee joins us to discuss a pair of offbeat Brit horror movies with totally loaded casts. First, Peter Cushing discovers that the humanoid fossil he discovered in New Guinea transforms into the slimy embodiment of pure evil when you just add water in THE CREEPING FLESH (1973). In a film with f--d-up family dynamics, Cushing almost immediately injects cells from his creepy skeleton's newly formed flesh into his young daughter (Lorna Heilbron) in a hair-brained attempt to inoculate her against evil. Christopher Lee is Cushing's hyper-competitive half-brother who mismanages a mental hospital and decides that stealing the fossil during a rainstorm is a great idea. What could go wrong? Directed by Hammer veteran Freddie Francis (DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE), who went on to late-career success as the director of photography of three David Lynch movies (ELEPHANT MAN, DUNE, THE STRAIGHT STORY) and Scorsese's remake of CAPE FEAR. Next, Christopher Lee teams up with the great Boris Karloff and 60s scream queen Barbara Steele in THE CRIMSON CULT aka CURSE OF THE CRIMSON ALTAR (1968). This one starts off with a bang with psychedelic sex parties and pagan sacrifices, so as Greg suggests, get high quick because the movie soon gives way too much screen time to Mark Eden as a dense antiques dealer looking for his brother where everyone is losing their minds (and articles of clothing) over anniversary of the burning of the witch Lavinia (Steele). I mean, um, Christopher Lee is right there! Also starring Michael Gough who played Alfred in the Tim Burton BATMAN movies. Both of our films today are from Tigon British Film Releasing Productions, the studio that released two folk horror classics: THE WITCHFINDER GENERAL (1968) and THE BLOOD ON SATAN'S CLAW (1971) along with some sex comedies. We also discuss folk horror and the pandemic with Rowan Lee and Bob saw MEGALOPOLIS! Black Sunday (Italian: La maschera del demonio, lit. 'The mask of the demon') is a 1960 Italian gothic horror film directed by Mario Bava in his official directorial debut, and starring Barbara Steele, John Richardson, Andrea Checchi, Ivo Garrani, Arturo Dominici and Enrico Oliveri. Loosely based on Nikolai Gogol's short story "Viy", the film takes place in Moldavia and tells the story of a witch who is put to death by her brother, only to return two centuries later to seek revenge upon his descendants.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/castle-of-horror-podcast--4268760/support.

This week we have a look at the 1961 horror film The Pit and the Pendulum. This is Episode #441! The Pit and the Pendulum is a 1961 horror film directed by Roger Corman, starring Vincent Price, Barbara Steele, John Kerr, and Luana Anders. The screenplay by Richard Matheson was loosely inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's 1842 short story of the same name. Set in sixteenth-century Spain, the story is about a young Englishman who visits a foreboding castle to investigate his sister's mysterious death. After a series of horrific revelations, apparently ghostly appearances and violent deaths, the young man becomes strapped to the titular torture device by his lunatic brother-in-law during the film's climactic sequence. The film was the second title in the popular series of Poe adaptations released by American International Pictures, the first having been Corman's House of Usher released the previous year. Like House, the film features widescreen cinematography by Floyd Crosby, sets designed by art director Daniel Haller, and a film score composed by Les Baxter. A critical and box-office hit, Pit's success convinced AIP and Corman to continue adapting Poe stories for another six films, five of them starring Price. The series ended in 1964 with the release of The Tomb of Ligeia.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/castle-of-horror-podcast--4268760/support.

Although its run was short-lived, NBC's 1991 Dark Shadows revival series left indelible fang marks upon its fans. A beautifully produced prime-time series helmed by Dan Curtis himself, the '91 DS featured the likes of Ben Cross, Joanna Going, Barbara Steele, Jean Simmons, Roy Thinnes, Lysette Anthony, Adrian Paul, and a young Joseph Gordon-Levitt, among many others. While the series generated much excitement among the fanbase and debuted to great success, it was unceremoniously canceled after only twelve episodes. This week on the latest and greatest in physical media, Peter Sobczynski joins Erik Childress to talk about a wealth of new titles in 4K. But also a film noir package dedicated to Edward G. Robinson, a restored version of the 1970s French giallo picture and a horror film about a necrophiliac doctor. That is mixed in with new upgrades for Stanley Kubrick's first feature, a classic western with Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas and Steven Soderbergh's all too-prescient thriller about a pandemic. Peter discusses a 1980s teen comedy he believes deserves some reappraisal.

This session of the radio show shares my recorded conversation with Barbara Steele, Nancy Rappa and Terry Robbins, all with FISH of Franklin. We had our conversation in the Franklin TV Studio conference room on Tuesday, August 29, 2023. The FISH of Franklin organization will be celebrating 50 years of community service this coming October 18 at Dean College. A “Save the Date” mailing was sent to the current list of volunteers and those they were able to find records for from prior years. However, they fear they may be missing some. Hence our conversation to get the word out so those who have volunteered in the past 50 years can get on the listing. Secondly, the FISH of Franklin are also looking for volunteers. We discussed their origin story, how the service they provide has evolved over the years, and that volunteering really is only a commitment for driving or handling the phone calls once a month. We talked of the three blessings for this volunteer effort. The recording runs about 35 minutes so let's listen in and learn about the three blessings of volunteering for FISH of Franklin.--------------FISH of Franklin volunteers provide rides to Franklin neighbors for medical or social service related appointments. You can call 508-528-2121 to arrange a ride or to volunteer--------------We are now producing this in collaboration with Franklin.TV and Franklin Public Radio (wfpr.fm) or 102.9 on the Franklin area radio dial. The twenty-first annual Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards are upon us! A special category in the Rondos is the write-in for Monster Kid Hall of Fame, which honors those who've made a permanent mark on the world of classic horror appreciation. Many of the inductees are/were fans of the genre themselves. This award is a rare distinction indeed, and there are several notable recipients. Missing from the list, however, is Dark Shadows creator Dan Curtis! This episode of Terror at Collinwood includes a series of interview clips featuring Dan Curtis himself, along with writer Sam Hall and actress Lara Parker. The clips help illustrate why Curtis should be considered for Monster Kid Hall of Fame status. A known enthusiast of classic terror tales and motion pictures, Curtis certainly made prominent puncture marks on the genre with Dark Shadows. He also unleashed the iconic The Night Stalker and The Night Strangler, and he helmed adaptations of Dracula, Frankenstein, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Turn of the Screw, and The Picture of Dorian Gray. He directed both Dark Shadows MGM feature films, the horror cult classics Burnt Offerings, Trilogy of Terror, Dead of Night, and many more! After his epic miniseries Winds of War and War and Remembrance, he returned to the world of the gothic with the 1991 Dark Shadows revival series, which featured horror legend Barbara Steele (who is also long past due for induction into the Monster Kid Hall of Fame). See the full ballot at https://rondoaward.com/ and email your votes to taraco@aol.com. Voting is open until Sunday at midnight, April 23, 2023. PS - And thanks to those who nominated Terror at Collinwood for Best Podcast and Penny Dreadful for Favorite Horror Host. WoHos!This week Mac's genre pick is Witches! We looked at the directorial debuts of two masters and their masterpieces: Mario Bava's BLACK SUNDAY and Robert Eggers' THE WITCH.Content preview: Mac is househunting, and Mom is trying to squeeze the most enjoyment out of her summer unstructured time before she goes back into the classroom in a few weeks. We both cater A LOT to our cats, Branwen and Rosey.Mac's Picks for June: Reanimator, The Hollowman Mom's picks for June: Night of the Hunter, The Midnight Meat Train, Tetsuo: The Iron ManMom's Shout Outs: Drag Mitch to Hell (Mom was on the Season 3 opener) & Cronenberg Or Cats (Mac will appear on 7/23 to discuss A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE at NIGHT & Mom will appear on 9/10 to discuss CAT PEOPLE 1942)! Mom enjoyed BLACK SUNDAY more than Mac, but that might be because she did more research to fill in the blanks of the script. Mac likes THE WITCH more than he did on previous watches, but Mom's opinion remains the same. Some questions remain: Do either of these films have a happy ending? Who's worse: Dr. Kruvajan or William? How serious are Mac's viewers on that whole green card marriage thing?Next time it's Mom's pick and I have chosen Nature Horror. Hey everybody and welcome to another episode of The Wrinkled Rabbit Podcast! This week we're talking about Federico Fellini's classic, 8 1/2. The film is about a film director finding himself creatively barren at the peak of his career. Urged by his doctors to rest, Guido heads for a luxurious resort, but a sorry group gathers - each one of them begging him to get on with the show. In retreat from them, Guido fantasizes about past women and dreams of his childhood. It stars Marcello Mastroianni, Claudia Cardinale, Anouk Aimee, Sandra Milo, Rosella Falk, Barbara Steele, Madeleine Lebeau, and Guido Alberti.

The film Black Sunday (1960) is about a witch/vampire hellbent on revenge returns from the grave in 1830s Moldavia. She's beautiful and deadly--and she has a doppelganger conveniently close to her old stomping grounds. The witch and her victim are both played by the arrestingly beautiful Barbara Steele, and this is the film that launched her career as a horror icon. It's also the film that cemented Italian director Mario Bava as one to watch. Barbara Steele biography on TCM can be found here.
