Today, I'm talking with two members of the lab, who have become great friends. The first is Chenel Basilio, the writer of Growth in Reverse. About the Bortons JERRY - Jerry Borton has traveled around the country leading seminars on disability awareness, theology of suffering, leadership, and fundraising—all from his power wheelchair. Born with Cerebral Palsy, his mother said he came from the womb with a suitcase in his hand, ready to take on the world. Jerry now devotes his time to help people with disabilities discover their gifts and talents and equip them to use them in their local community. He is passionate to help Christian community leaders embrace hiring people with disabilities to make a positive impact on their world. Jerry has an M.S. in Organizational Leadership and is an ordained minister. Jerry admits to a mild obsession with baseball. He likes watching every form of the game—from two kids slapping at a ball with a stick to his beloved Detroit Tigers winning an American League pennant. Jerry and his wife, Joan, have been married for over 28 years and enjoy games, traveling and spoiling their nieces and nephews. Jerry and Joan make their home in central Florida. JOAN - “Easy” is rarely a word that is used in relation to disability ministry. But long-time disability advocate, Joan Borton, loves to show people how easy it is to start a friendship with someone with a disability. Disability ministry has taken Joan to Ghana, West Africa, and all around the U.S, where she has taught on topics ranging from disability awareness to soul care to managing change to marriage and disability. Joan has been joyfully married to Jerry since 1995. She is passionate about strengthening marriages affected by disability and frequently blogs and writes on this topic. Joan recently published her first book, MarriageAbility: Embracing the Richness of a Marriage Affected by Disability. There is little Joan enjoys more than encouraging a caregiver and listening to them share their life. Joan and Jerry are committed to hospitality—whether that means entertaining guests at their Florida home, providing respite care for kids and teens, or being a home away from home for family and friends. When faced with a little down time you will likely find her reading or working on a jigsaw puzzle. TOGETHER - Jerry and Joan Borton have spent most of their lives befriending, working with and supporting people affected by disability. For Jerry it began at birth when he was born with Cerebral Palsy. Joan grew up with friends who had disabilities and found it a natural fit for her. It was little surprise to anyone, except themselves, when God brought them together in marriage and ministry in 1995. Together they have a broad history of engagement with people with physical, developmental and mental health disabilities. They have ministered in residential, camping, recreational, church and educational programs. Jerry and Joan understand from personal experience that disability affects the entire family. In 2019 Jerry and Joan co-founded Luke 14 Exchange, Inc . Today you will find them mentoring people with disabilities, writing and speaking on topics of family support, discovering your giftedness as a person with a disability, and the influence of the disability movement and the Church. We will spend time exploring some Federal actions. Most of our time will be spent exploring the adoption of a final rule by the Architecture and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board (ATBCB). This Board has been operational for more than half a century and is responsible for overseeing regulations that assure that people with disabilities are fully included in society through the adoption of rules and regulations that determine how buildings will be built and how access through roads and other elements of the built environment will be made usable. This particular final rule goes into effect on September 7th and is known as a final rule. This final rule governs how people who are walking or using wheel chairs get access to sidewalks and roads and roundabouts and street crossings and so on. The rule is commonly called "PROWAG" which stands for Public Right Of Way Accessibility Guidelines. I am certainly not an expert on this subject but we have invited two people who are much more knowledgeable than the Tuesday Topic team to join us. Becky Davidson and Chris Bell will join us to help us understand this new rule. We have also invited a representative of Polara, a company that manufactures accessible traffic signals to bring us up to date on their products. What does it include that specifically involves people who are blind? What problems does it seek to solve? Has it made things perfect for pedestrians? Is there more that we need to do? Who do the regulations cover? How are they enforced? What else do we need to make things better? We will also, if we have time, talk about some other Federal developments that could well be significant for people who are blind and we will spend a little time telling you how regulations work and how you can do your part to make them better! 20220921 Untangling Transportation – No Cars Required Originally Aired September 21, 2022, on ACB Media 5   On September 22nd, Car Free Day encourages motorists around the world to give up their vehicles for a day. Newsflash! Those of us who are blind or have low vision does this daily. So, we can skip all the oohs, ahs, and OMGs our car-loving neighbors might be voicing at the very notion of going a day without driving. Instead, we can take the time to talk about life as a pedestrian—the good, the bad, and the challenging. We've got a very special guest to help us do just that. Becky Davidson is First Vice-President of the North Carolina Council of the Blind; Co-Chairperson of ACB's Pedestrian Environmental Access Committee: and a long-time advocate for Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS) and anything else that helps to increase pedestrian safety. So, we discussed APS and pedestrian safety and the link between community accessibility and public transportation. We took a few minutes to dream about what a world could look like without so many cars. Sponsored by Accessible Avenue

Does Energy Healing Change Your Brain?: Kandy Graves | Habits for Humans

SHOW NOTESWelcome to Habits for Humans, the show that explores how to program your brain to maximize your potential. The goal of this podcast is to teach you how to instill systems and habits to live a healthy, sustainable, deeply satisfying way of life.In this episode, my conversation with Kandy Graves, aka Quantum Coach Kandy, was revelatory for a few reasons. One, I was reminded that productive trauma work is more than just telling your story to a skilled professional, though of course there's nothing wrong with that. Sure, it's valuable to address the problem on a cognitive level; however, according to Kandy, this doesn't go deep enough. Indeed, in order to create the profound shifts that leave clients free to find a new life arc, the work needs to incorporate energetic healing as well. According to Kandy, this process involves not just reparenting the inner child, but also going around the RAS, the brain's reticular activating system, in order to effectively reprogram the subconscious. How does this work, exactly? Kandy points out that the brain always seeks homeostasis; it prefers what is known, familiar, even comfortable. Which gets tricky when the known, the familiar, and the comfortable represent patterns of thinking and behaving that are unhealthy for us, always reactivating our traumas and the complicated --and often maladaptive--responses associated with them. So the reprogramming has to happen on what she calls an epigenetic level, deep enough that the mind simply releases the old patterns.Sounds more like wizardry than therapy, right? But the results are truly stunning. As one of only a small handful (roughly 120) of practitioners trained in this modality, Kandy offers clients a unique journey that helps them quickly locate and identify tricky patterns, then neutralize them. It was precisely this technique that helped a woman whose son had taken his life right in front of her, for example, to not only reckon with the pain and horror continually activated by the memory, but also to permanently disentangle herself from it. Yes, she still remembers what happened and what she witnessed, but she is no longer emotionally tethered to the event the way she was before. It IS possible to reprogram our subconscious minds by working with rather than against the grain of the brain's trauma response mechanisms. But it takes someone with Kandy's highly unique skill set to facilitate this! You can find her links below. If you're ready to shift the way you react to the trauma of the past, Kandy is your skilled, competent, and compassionate Guide. Becky Davidson, is an incredible woman! Her work is groundbreaking and she is doing things that will change the way we think about education, and how to practice and teach emotional management and work through being uncomfortable. Becky Davidson, Teacher, Coach, Friend, and incredibly wise and creative human, comes from a wonderful family of storytellers. From an early age she began to learn why people she loved would turn to drinking and smoking often in their lives. When we don't want to face certain uncomfortable emotions that come, we tend to use substances enabling us to forget or escape. Becky lost a younger brother to alcoholism, and a mother to lung cancer due to smoking, Her father is also an alcoholic and it has been hard for Becky to see those she loves suffer as they have turned to these options.  On her way home from teaching a college class at Utah Valley University, Becky recognized that she didn't “bring it” to the class today, and as a result she let her students down. Becky started to get curious about why she was feeling the way she did, it was uncomfortable. As she dove into what her feelings meant, she recognized that she wasn't giving her self grace which is something she has always tried to give to others. She learned that the inner voice, we often give space to, is very loud in our lives and got curious to learn more about it. That said, She began to give her self permission to be a “Learner” when the uncomfortable feelings showed themselves, so she could learn from them in an effort to understand them.  Becky talks about some of the trait's we pass onto/receive from family members. She saw that members of her family would become very disappointed and down on themselves and she began to recognize that she was doing the same thing. As a determined learner, she committed to “sit” with her uncomfortable inner critic, she began meditating (sitting) and as a literary researcher she found some amazing people who were guides of meditation and she began feasting on their practices. This is where she truly began “sitting”. Early on she discovered that the uncomfortable feelings we feel such as pain, anxiety, fear, move through us. Emotions do not come to sit inside of us and stay forever, they truly move through us. She said “When we become comfortable in our own minds, if we are willing to sit, we learn that we are optimized and we have the power and ability to allow these feelings to move through us and learn from them”.  Becky teaches that “often times we contract around the feelings we don't want to feel, and when we do this we in a way choose to keep that feeling we don't want within us. Uncomfortable feelings will move through us if we allow them, and when they do we open ourselves to enlightenment on the other side of those feelings, which enables us to discover other feelings that exist within us that we are also holding on to." "As soon as you sit and get quite, whatever needs your attention comes to the surface. The more you sit the better you get at identifying the feelings and what is causing them." In her research she learned that naming the emotions or “demons” is a good idea, and while you sit and the "demons" surface, we can talk to them by name. Doing this allows us to have a friendship with those emotions so we can learn from them and understand why those feelings come.  “We can't always choose the thoughts that pop into our head, but we can consciously choose the memories that we want to embrace and carry with us.  After learning to “sit” herself Becky was equipped to respond to her son and daughter at times they were in need. Her children were dealing with some anxiety and fear, and Becky worked individually with them, teaching them to “sit” and feel their own emotions. To help active kids learn to “sit” she followed an impression she received to tell a story while they practiced meditating. The stories she shares involve “journeyer avatars” who have an adventure ahead of them, filled with obstacles, puzzles, strategic workarounds, world building, etc… Her children, the practicing meditators, took part in claiming a bit of transformative wisdom, and Becky saw the deep impact as her daughter melted into her arms and released many pent up emotions. This is where Becky, with the encouragement of family and friends, developed Lotimus.  Becky describes Lotimus as an opportunity where, “Body goes still, mind goes on a Journey”. She describes Lotimus, saying "Yes, your body will be still but I'm going to launch your mind into a world with a narrative provided, inviting the listener to allow their imagination to soar. This is a Journeying practice in first person that you are the hero of." Lotimus gives the listener an opportunity to discover who they are, and to unlock their imagination and creativity. It maybe uncomfortable at first, but on the other side of our willingness to sit in uncomfortable feelings, we will experience Knowledge, and self discovery which empower you to uncover who you are and what you are capable of. "This is an opportunity to discover peace, ease of “being”, even bliss, if you are willing to pay the price and “sit”." If you are interested in how to Meditate or in “Sitting” as Becky, and now Michael, call it. Becky highly recommends the book written by Jack Cornfield called “A Path With Heart”. Website Address: www.lotimus.com is where you can find the Journey's created by Becky and her incredible team. I have listened to some of the stories, and love the what I have experienced. This concept is ground breaking and so needed in our day. School classrooms give us the tools needed to get a career and work, but they miss the mark when it comes to emotional health and education, which has a huge impact on Mental, Spiritual, Social, and Physical Health. My family now "Sits" in these stories when we are putting the kids to bed, and it has been a huge hit! Best part... The kids actually LISTEN!! LOL!  Becky would love if you would check out Lotimus and reach out to her with feed back. Please check out Lotimus, and let Becky know your thoughts by sending her an email to, becky@lotimus.com . She is extremely grateful in advance for any of you that will do so.  Becky, my friend, you are incredible. I learned so much from you and cannot thank you enough for the opportunity to meet you, talk to you, and partake of your genuine goodness and wisdom. You have a passion for education and creativity, coupled with a sincere love of Humanity, so it makes complete sense that God has inspired you with such a impactful mission. The vision for Rising Above Ministries was birthed through Jeff and  Becky Davidson’s experiences raising their son, Jon Alex, with profound special needs. When Jeff passed away in 2017, Becky not only became a widow and a single mother, she also became an author, speaker, and the leader of the couple's ministry. In this episode, Becky talks about how "typical" families can embrace their friends and loved ones with a special needs child, the way Jeff's legacy lives on, the role that Rising Above plays in our community, and how she refuses to allow labels to define her in this next stage of her life. This podcast is full of inspiration for anyone experiencing transition and change, especially if that is as a result of circumstances outside of your control.
