SEASON 2 EPISODE 46: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:40) IT'S STEVIE DAY! If you heard Friday's regular episode of the podcast, you've heard all of this before but I wanted to emphasize this story because, well, because it IS Stevie Day. 11 years ago today, totally by happenstance, with no plan, no rhyme, and no reason, I instantaneously became a dog person. All because of a little Maltese who liked to give kisses (and still does) B-Block (16:37) IT'S STEVIE DAY - PART TWO: She has fought through everything: cancer, immune disease, mobility issues, and never stopped smiling, and never believing that any human meant her anything but good (and still does). And now I have four dogs and I truly was, eleven years ago today, born again in dogs :-) C-Block (31:12) GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Given the rapid progress made in this field in recent years, autonomous vehicles could soon become part of our daily lives, bringing with them all the consequences and questions they raise in terms of modern mobility. This would benefit people with visual impairments who are unable to drive. However, it wouldn't necessarily assist them in their pedestrian moves, which will always play a significant role in their daily lives. Maël Fabien became aware of the lack of available solutions in this regard during a walk in town. He noticed a visually impaired person video calling a friend, who was guiding her through his voice based on the video she was sharing. As a result, he took inspiration from the latest advances in autonomous vehicles to create a harness capable of continuously analyzing the pedestrian environment, and safely guiding its users in all their movements. From there, Biped was born, a device that promises to improve the life of the 270 million visually impaired people worldwide, by providing them with a much more accurate and secure perception of their environment than traditional solutions. In this surprising episode, you will learn about: The daily life of a visually impaired person and its impact on mobility How Biped was developed in close collaboration with its end users Some key concepts of autonomous mobility and the sensors that constitute it How Biped translates the user's 3D environment into audio cues for guidance The potential applications of Biped beyond ophthalmology An outlook on the future of mobility and what it might change for those with limited vision! Timeline: 02:01 - Maël's interests at the interface of economics and speech processing 04:07 - Addressing the need for 270 million visually impaired 07:50 - What Biped is about 15:32 - How Biped reads and translates the environment of the user 22:30 - How users are trained on the system 24:14 - The spectrum of visually impaired people that Biped serves 30:08 - The underlying business model 32:19 - Potential applications beyond ophthalmology 34:58 - What users say about it 39:09 - Maël's definition of impact What we talked also talked about with Maël: Idiap Research Institute Mobility training Lidar Bone conduction headphones Jules Gonin Eye Hospital Glaucoma Retinitis Pigmentosa Macular Degeneration Cochlear Implants You can learn more about Biped.ai through their website. Feel free to follow as well their activities on LinkedIn! As mentioned by Maël during the episode, you can find out more about the latest advances in autonomous driving and related AI through Tesla's yearly AI Day (2022 recording here). Tactonom) 4. Tastaturen (Help 2 Type, Mykey, Hable One jetzt mit App, Rivo 3 versus Senseplayer) 5. Vorlesen lassen (Orcam Read, Hype um Envision Glasses, Voxi Vision kann auch Texte übersetzen, Harc Reader bei verschiedenen Firmen erhältlich) 6. Lesegeräte für Sehbehinderte (Clover Note, bessere Kontraste in den 8-Zoll-Lupen von Opteelec und EV Optron, unüberschaubare Möglichkeiten für die Schule, Zoomcam hat ohne Software Vorteile) 7. Telefone (Blindshell, was macht Lucia?

In this episode of INSIGHTS, we have the privilege of being joined by a true stalwart of the UK bass music scene. If you've been paying even the slightest bit of attention over the years to that signature strain of wonky, skewed, bass driven techno, as purveyed by seminal labels such as Hessle Audio, Timedance, Livity Sound, Hemlock and Idle Hands, you will certainly be familiar with Bruce, who boasts a slew of landmark releases on all of the aforementioned imprints. We look back over his incredible career as well as discussing some extremely exciting new projects, most notably his new party TURN '23 which debuts at Strange Brew in Bristol on the Saturday 28th January with an absolutely ludicrous cast of greats from across the electronic music spectrum - DJ Marcelle, Nazar, Shelley Parker, Biped, Sybil, Aura Tekh and of course, Bruce himself.Over the course of this interview, we begin by discussing Larry's early years and formative experiences, meeting Ploy and Batu whilst studying at Bath Uni, moving to Bristol, the city's club culture and how two emails from Ben UFO and Peverelist in 2014 springboard his production career. We then discuss some of his career-highlights, both as a producer and DJ before moving onto his current projects - XRA with fellow Timedance and Hessle Audio heavyweight, Lurka, as well as his new solo live set. We conclude by talking about his Get Loose parties, before previewing his tantalising forthcoming event TURN '23!We are giving away three tickets for TURN '23 to one lucky winner!
1938 saw one of the world's most famous media hoaxes terrify a nation of unexpecting listeners when the original War of the Worlds radio broadcast was sent out across the airwaves unannounced, leading many to believe it to be a genuine news item. Somewhat more obscure is the tale of its precursor, when 103 years earlier in August of 1835, daily New York newspaper The Sun ran a week-long series of articles concerning the discovery of life on the moon. The paper's “Lunarians” were a bizarre species of temple building man-bats living in perfect harmony with the animals that surrounded them. It was a humbug to match the audacity from any of the exhibits in P.T. Barnum's American Museum and as unbelievable as it may sound today, at the time there were many who firmly believed it, fueling debates that raged across all levels of society. Cabo Polonio is a small seaside village on Uruguay's Atlantic coast. The permanent, year-round population is just 95 people living in around 50 homes. Another 350 homes are used between December and February—by tourists hoping to see pinnipeds—[Sea lion sounds]—fur seals and sea lions that haul out on the town's rocky cape. In January alone, more than 30,000 tourists visit. What are the impacts of so many tourists on these marine mammals? Between 1996 and 2014, European and South American biologists monitored both the animals and the people to find out. Over that time span, the pinnipeds' tolerance for human disturbance declined. When annoyed, they move further away from the tourist viewing area or even dive back in the water to swim away. Those responses are contrary to the common assumption that wildlife becomes habituated to human activities. The study is in the journal Applied Animal Behaviour Science. [Carme Tuneu Corral, et al. Short- and long-term changes in the intensity of responses of pinnipeds to tourist approaches in Cabo Polonio, Uruguay.]The researchers think that a fence, initially constructed in the late 1990s, is to blame. It was built with good intentions, to keep people a safe distance from the colony. But the fence isn't long enough to keep people away from the most critical part of the habitat. It might even funnel people towards that area, as they try to find viewing spots closer than the fence would allow.Or it could be that the fence actually does its job keeping people away. But as a result, they are just far enough away that the animals never really get used to them. The truth is that pinnipeds seem to be doing well in Uruguay. While the amount of animals in the rookery varies day by day, the best estimate is there's now around a thousand of them—more than there were 20 years ago. But it's hard to say whether tourism has played any role in that increase. The animals have also become protected from hunting under Uruguayan law. And there are environmental factors at play in governing their population, like prey availability and climate change.Still, the study tells us two things. First, photographic wildlife tourism may not always be as low-impact as assumed. Second, ecotourism developers should get input from social psychologists: who can help anticipate the behaviors of the visiting humans, as they observe the behaviors of the native wildlife. —Jason G. Goldman (The above text is a transcript of this podcast)
Sea lions and fur seals in Uruguay have become a tourist attraction—but the animals have become less, not more, accepting of humans. Jason G. Goldman reports.
