In part two of our deep dive into the Petrov Affair, we unpack the political chaos that followed one of Australia's biggest Cold War scandals. The defection of a Soviet spy didn't just make headlines, it reshaped an election, launched a Royal Commission, and sent the Labor Party spiralling into accusations of communism. We look at how the opposition leader's desperate attempt to clear his name became a full-blown witch hunt, how fear shaped the nation's politics, and what life looked like for the Petrov's after the dust settled, trying to then live quietly in Australia.

In this Big Talk, we are very excited to be unpacking the world of spies during the Cold War. The Cold War was one nerve-wracking periods in modern history. So in part one, we explore how its paranoia, politics, and power struggles impacted the whole world, but specifically, Australia. We'll look at how this global rivalry between the Western and Eastern nations sparked the creation of ASIO and how everyday fears of communist infiltration seeped into our politics, our media, and the public's imagination. But at the centre of this Cold War storm was a truly wild Australian story: the Petrovs. In this episode we begin to tell the story of Vladimir and Evdokia Petrov, Soviet diplomats living a quiet life in Canberra - until it was revealed they were actually Soviet spies leaking information back to the USSR.

Welcome to part two of our Roe v Wade deep dive. In this episode we focus on the international ripple effects of the decision, Australia's own history of legalising and decriminalising abortion state by state, and the devastating fallout after the overturning of Roe v Wade and how that was legally made possible. We also look at how it has continued to be a debate in Australian culture and politics.

In this episode, we dive into the true story behind Roe v. Wade, exploring not just the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case itself, but the real people at the heart of it and the decades-long fight over reproductive rights that followed. We introduce Norma McCorvey, who was Jane Roe, as well as Linda Coffee and Sarah Weddington, the 26 and 28 year old lawyers who stood before the Supreme Court. We also look at the legal explanations of the case, criticisms of it, the following cases that altered it and what the laws were prior to the landmark decision.
After the assassination of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, both Republicans and Democrats called for unity and understanding — but polarizing rhetoric has continued to escalate. President Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other White House officials have vowed to target the “radical left” for being politically violent. Democratic officials have warned that the White House may try to use the assassination to suppress speech. Those fears may have been realized when ABC was threatened over late-night host Jimmy Kimmel's comments about conservatives' reaction to Charlie Kirk's killing. Brendan Carr, the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, pressured the network to pull Kimmel off the air indefinitely. How do Americans feel about a government agency censoring speech that they don't agree with? Whose responsibility is it to turn down the temperature when it comes to rhetoric and polarization? David Greene worked with country singer Ketch Secor of the band Old Crow Medicine Show to produce a music documentary called Louder Than Guns. Greene spent time with Secor, touring across the country and hearing Americans' reflections on gun violence and gun rights. When FOX News host Trey Gowdy said that Americans should have a conversation about preventing more gun violence, his fellow conservatives said he should be ashamed. How do we stop talking past each other during conversations about guns and create an open dialogue? Are Americans too enraged by each other to ever experience unity? This week, a listener asked Left, Right and Center about America's history of political violence and if our panel thinks anything has changed.

We pick up where we left in Part One, Epstein in jail awaiting trial. We examine the conspiracy about if he was in fact killed and why so many people believe that. We assess his friendship to President Donald Trump and Prince Andrew, as well as his infamous BBC interview. We then look to Ghislaine Maxwell's trial and what she is demanding from the President now, in the present day.
Epstein is a name that has dominated the headlines for years. To convince you of how pivotal this story is - let me use a recent direct quote from Trump himself. “Are you still talking about Jeffrey Epstein? This guy's been talked about for years … are people still talking about this guy, this creep? … I can't believe you're asking a question about Epstein.” Or perhaps, this ABC headline, “The ghost of Jeffrey Epstein is haunting the world's most powerful men” Or Politico, “Conspiracies and political theatre around Epstein files keep the legacy alive.” So, who was this man? Who is Ghislaine Maxwell? What did they actually do? Who was involved? What was the Sweet Hearts deal? This is what we hope to begin to answer in the part one of this months Big Talk.

In part two we discuss the short and long term impact of the Mabo Case. We look at how Australians responded, the fear mongering and misinformation and how Keating handled it at the time. We then open up the Wik Case, which addressed native title and pastoral leases. The Howard government response to this, his 10 point plan and how this impacted Native Title.
This episode is a little extra special, because Jess’s guest isn’t just one of our most-loved Big Talk Show regulars… he’s also her husband and one of Australia’s most respected news anchors: Peter Overton (aka Petee!). With 35 years at Channel Nine and a Silver Logie nomination, Petee’s no stranger to the spotlight, but this time you’re asking the questions. In this heartwarming (and cheeky) conversation, Pete reflects on his long career in news, what the Logie nomination really means to him, what he really thinks of Tom Cruise, the private call he once received from Bryan Henderson (which he’s never spoken about before), and his secret to staying cool under pressure. He also shares why he believes success isn’t defined by what we do, but by how we show up in the world. Expect plenty of laughs, a few mushy moments, surprise cameo questions (yes, even from Ally Langdon!), and thoughtful insights from one of TV’s kindest hearts. Know someone who'd enjoy this episode? This was such a pivotal moment in Australia's history, a fascinating legal case and a man, Eddie Mabo, whose story we should all know. Really, what was so important about the Mabo decision is that it challenged one of the biggest lies at the heart of Australia's foundation — that the land was empty when the British arrived. So today we want to look at who Eddie Mabo was, how his case came to be and the journey of him taking it all the way to the High Court - forcing Australians to formally recognise that our Indigenous people had rich culture, laws and land ownership long before British invasion.
