Boxed wine sucks - or does it?!? When a listener suggested we do an episode on boxed wine given all of the nuttiness with tariffs and rising wine prices, we said “Why the eff not?!?” Look, we may be wine reviewers and have our own fancy-pants wine podcast, but that doesn't mean we are too good for boxed wine. And, we think you will be very surprised to learn about how popular boxed wine has become, not only in the US but across the world. And, we think you will be surprised by our reviews of the wines we tasted. So there's a there there if you are willing to open your mind. We also think you will be very surprised to learn about the history of boxed wine - which should probably be called bagged wine, or bladder wine, BTW - and how good of a bargain it can really be. This intriguing 2022 novel by Nikki Erlick focuses on the age-old question of how much time one has to live. The tale begins when everyone in the world over 22 years of age receives a small wooden box with the message: The measure of your life lives within. Every person found a piece of string in the box correlating to how long they will live. We follow the lives of eight New Yorkers and the repercussions of the choices they make based on their string length. Following the theme of the wooden box, we try a boxed white wine from La Petite Frog Picpoul out of Southern France. It proved to be a crisp, tasty wine that we enjoy while learning about the aspects of boxed wine.

On the pod today - we're thinking inside the wine box! Have you noticed there are more boxed wine options on the market and they're getting better and better? What may have seemed like a cheaper choice before is now viewed as a more sustainable choice. And the wine in the bag in that box? It keeps getting better. We get the lowdown on the move to wine in boxes from industry expert Erin Kirschenmann of Wine Business Monthly and Jason Haas of Tablas Creek Vineyard in Paso Robles, CA. For Erin, when it comes to alternative packaging for wine, she's seen it evolve and she has the inside scoop on the industry perspective and the evolution of boxed wine. For Jason, we'll learn the inspiration for Tablas Creek being one of the first wineries to put really, really good wine in a box. If you're used to cheap boxed wine, this is not only a revelation but a trend we're seeing. So draw some wine from the box in your fridge and join us for a great conversation!

Sip, share, shape our podcast!Do you think bottles are the only way to package wine? We're here to change the way you think about alternative packaging for wine!In the world of wine trends, packaging for wine may not be the sexiest, but we think there are some pretty cool things going on! We're not talking about ordinary wine storage boxes or wine shippers, we're talking about alternate packaging solutions for bringing wine directly to you, your table, and your glass.Wine boxes have been around for years. There's nothing really new about the concept, but there's more to the wine pouch in a box than meets the eye. Gone are the days of cheap party wine in a box, and hello are the days of some really great wine right on your wine shop's shelf. In this episode, we take Alileo's Grillo and Syrah to task. Gold stars all around! I'd take this for a party gift any day!As for the box concept, cardboard is lighter for packaging wine than glass wine bottles, Shipping boxes filled with wine pouch bags can fill every gap in a wine shipping container. Bottles, however, result in shipping a ton of empty space even using lightweight pulp wine shippers or other environmentally friendly wine packaging. Moving beyond wine in a box, let's talk wine in a can. Not beer, but wine! More and more winemakers are taking their custom blends and prized wines and shifting away from bottles to cans. Nomadica wines are taking custom packaging to new heights. With canned wines, 3-liter boxed wines, and more, this trend-forward brand is changing the game in wine packaging.Wine bottles aren't being left behind. While at a glance, bottles may not look different, there's a trend to reduce the weight of wine bottles. We tested this ourselves and found two different bottles of bubbles were nearly 10% different in weight! Translate that to a case, a pallet, a container, and the weight savings add up quickly. Reducing the carbon footprint in the wine industry is a hot item. Lighter wine bottles are a step in the right direction.Bottle sizes play a part in the wine packaging topic. From splits to half-bottles, Jeroboam to Midas, there are numerous options beyond the traditional 750ml. We might not be able to lift or pour wine from most of them, but we're willing to give it a try!Alternate packaging for wine is no longer a symbol of cheap, low-quality wine. Plop any of these wines in gift boxes or bags with tissue paper and gift away! Your friends will thank you!Support the Show. Thanks for joining Somm Women Talk Wine! 32: How Juliet Wine is Breaking New Ground for Boxed Wine – With Co-Founder Allison Luvera - Business of Drinks

Business of Drinks

Today we're talking with Allison Luvera, co-founder and CEO of Juliet, a wine company that's reshaping the narrative around boxed wine.  Allison has a really interesting background having worked in fashion advertising for Vogue and InStyle magazines, then later as director of Pernod Ricard's luxury marketing division, as brand marketing lead for Perrier-Jouet Champagne, Martell Cognac, Tequila Avion, Absolut Elyx, The Glenlivet, and Chivas. Juliet is an interesting product because it forged new territory in the boxed wine category, with very stylish branding and packaging. It's a cylindrical carton with a velvet rope handle, and really stands out on the shelf as a premium pick.  Juliet is having phenomenal traction in hospitality venues — it's now being served poolside at the Bellagio in Las Vegas and several Auberge resorts. Customers are ordering the whole box and perching it on tables to keep refilling their own glasses. And at retail, the brand has defined itself as a go-to for gatherings, from bachelorette parties to PTA meetings. We discuss how Allison and co-founder Lauren DeNiro identified the whitespace in the boxed wine category, and pursued a solution — and a specific customer — with laser-like focus. Juliet has now raised more than $5 million in funding, and has surpassed 10,000 cases of 1.5 L cartons.  Some key takeaways from the episode:  Why boxed wine is a predicted to be a bright spot in the wine category in the coming years How Juliet closed a new round (in a tough fundraising environment!) to bring its fundraising total to $5 million Why Juliet is moving from a predominantly DTC model to a wholesale model How public relations and paid social campaigns drove growth in the early days Why “customers are the new influencers” – and how to engage and incentivize informal brand ambassadors Why on-premise partnerships in prestige accounts are crucial for discovery and brand-building Links Referenced in Show Juliet Wine: https://drinkjuliet.com/  IWSR's Key trends for the US wine market in 2024: https://www.theiwsr.com/key-trends-for-the-us-wine-market-in-2024/#:~:text=IWSR%20forecasts%20that%20US%20wine,2022%20falling%20by%20%2D3%25  Future Market Insights' Wine Box Market Outlook: https://www.futuremarketinsights.com/reports/wine-box-market  1,000 True Fans: https://kk.org/thetechnium/1000-true-fans/  The ‘Drinks of Summer' that Never Were (Vinepair): https://vinepair.com/articles/drinks-of-the-summer-that-never-were/ Stay tuned for our next episode dropping on July 10.  For the latest updates, follow us: Business of Drinks LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/business-of-drinks/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bizofdrinks/ Erica Duecy, co-host: Erica Duecy is founder and co-host of Business of Drinks, and one of the drinks industry's most accomplished digital and content strategists. There are two types of people, those who live and breathe boxed wine, and those who are skeptical. Truthfully I was always a skeptic, believing that box wine was 'cheap wine' and boy was I wrong!   Recently I learned about a new brand called Bebly that solves a problem that I certainly can identify with and truthfully...I think you can too. Owner, Ally, took a glance at her tablescape a few years back and saw a box wine with paper towels under it to catch any spilling. She searched high and low to find a solution to elevate the way she served it. With no luck she designed a system that makes serving box wine simple, chic, practical and sustainable! Through this conversation Ally educated me on the truth about box wine, along with the bright future ahead of it that includes something for all of us to learn! (I am officially converted!) We also dove into the truth about the 'sand shortage' around the world and how it's effecting the cost of bottled wine that we know and love.  How to simplify our gatherings in our planning so that we can enjoy the process and time with our guests! ...I am always going to advocate for things that make your table effortlessly beautiful, and that enhances your guests experience- which leads me to sing Bebly's praises to you! This conversation is for the wino (or truthfully even cold brew lover!),  new host, seasoned host, design enthusiast and those looking for fresh ideas for the table! Hello wine enthusiasts, welcome to The Daily Taste for Thursday May 19th, 2022.  I saw an interesting article the other day that talked about the increased popularity of boxed wine, so I decided to do this segment on boxed wine. I was surprised when the article said boxed wine is increasing in popularity especially among the environmentally conscious and the young consumer.  Experts say that there has been tremendous growth in boxed wine, and I honestly couldn't believe it!  If you've read the section on the show website called about the host, you know that my first experience with wine was a boxed wine but since falling in love with wine, I haven't considered buying wine from a box.    The article is critical of what they refer to as “traditional wine enthusiasts” saying that they are used to the heavy glass bottle and the cork or screw cap closure and think of boxed wine as something to hold cheap, low-quality wine.  Apparently, this is no longer true.  I have to admit, I was fascinated…..According to sommilierbusiness.com, boxed wine was originally preferred by producers of less expensive wines because as mentioned before, the box is cheaper to produce compared to glass bottles.  According to the site, everything changed in 2003 when Black Box Wines introduced premium wines in box packages which was then followed by many other premium wine brands.  The article goes on to say that boxed wine is becoming more of a norm and is only looked down upon by the "average wine consumer" who believes the old stereotype that boxed wine is for cheap, low-quality wine.  The article makes its case for wine in a box by listing the following pros of drinking boxed wine: 1 - More bang for your buck.  A box of wine holds at least twice the amount of wine held in a standard 750ml glass bottle with the most popular size box being 3 liters.   2 - It's a plus for the environment. A box takes less energy to produce than a bottle. It's also recycled easier and produced and shipped for a cheaper price than bottled wine, making is much easier on the environment.  3 - Boxed wine lasts longer than wine held in a glass bottle after opening (4-6 WEEKS) because there is no way for oxygen to get through the tap and into the plastic bag that holds the wine preventing the immediate oxidizing of the wine that happens when a glass bottle is opened. 4 - Boxed wine is easier to transport because it doesn't slide around like a bottle, and you have zero risk of breaking any glass.  Of course, they also list 3 negatives regarding boxed wine:  Cons of Boxed wine: 1 - No aging potential.  Boxed wine is meant for quick easy consumption.  If you are a consumer who loves aged wines, then a boxed wine is not for you. 2 - Lack of selection.  Since a lot of wineries are not on board with wine in a box, it limits your choices. 3 - They are not wine cooler compatible and have to be placed in a refrigerator.   I don't consider myself a wine snob at all and love to try new things so I am going to go out and get myself some boxed wine and see what all the fuss is about.  If you drink boxed wine, please email the show at obsessedwithwine@yahoo.com or go to the beautiful new website at www.obsessedwithwine.com and tell me your boxed wine stories.  I would love to share them with the other listeners on a future show!  Thank you very much!  Ill see you tomorrow for another Daily Taste, Cheers!

But how can you utilize more environmentally friendly materials without sacrificing the look, feel, and taste of premier wine?  Really Good Boxed Wine is creating exactly what's in its name. This isn't just any boxed wine you'd find in the grocery store; instead, Really Good Boxed Wine offers up a taste of something you'd find at a small, family-owned winery in Sonoma. Rather than pushing out truckloads of bottles, they're discovering the creative possibilities of boxed wine while maintaining the taste of the California vineyards. How else is Really Good Boxed Wine innovating in the wine space? In this episode of VINTed, Scout Driscoll sits down with Jake Whitman, Founder and CEO of Really Good Boxed Wine, to talk about growing a brand and redefining the wine industry. Jake explains the benefits of boxed wine, how he shaped the brand, and why he chose the direct-to-consumer route. Plus, Jake shares tips on marketing, brand design, and testing before you invest!

Brought to you by The Real Voice - Mel Allen. Providing voice over for commercials, podcasts, explainer videos, and more. Samples and demos at https://therealvoice.com Wine in a box has that opposite of Je ne said quoi - that air of affordability about them. Until now that is. It's been rare to find a boxed wine out of the teens Occasionally there have been some in the $35 range - but the bubble has officially been burst! Tablas Creek Vineyard is pushing the envelope. Will it push back? That remains to be seen - but they're busy folding up boxes that will set you back $95 for the 3-liter package. It might be good timing as boxed wine sales have been up - nearly 19% last year - when compared to 2019. Find out more about the 108 cases of Patelin Rose and why it's living in a box at https://www.wine-searcher.com/m/2022/02/dawn-of-the-95-wine-box Everybody likes a comeback kid, right? Well, there are ten beer companies, most of which I've heard of most and actually tried seven of that came back from the dead. Thankfully - this isn't like that Zombie dream, it's just that the brands were too beloved to let them lie. Narragansett, Catamount, and even Pabst Blue Ribbon are on this list - among others - so prepare for some nostalgia as you peruse this list. https://www.eatthis.com/discontinued-beers-returned/ And why aren't beer alternatives growing faster - according to the research - it's shopper confusion. 71% of people who walk up to these products spend time walking back and forth to see which one might be right… but end up walking away! RTD, Seltzers, and other “Beyond beer” products (as they're called in this article). Turns out more men are walking away - and we might have better data, better signage, and more helpful information on cans to help us consumers make better choices. Who doesn't love making good choices in the aisle - so you can go enjoy what you're buying!? In this episode, we tackle boxed wine! Wait, did you say wine in a box?!? Yes! And we found a couple that we liked! As part of our Cork Free! series, we continue to express our love for wines without a cork. We rate 3 Pinot Grigios, two we found very drinkable, and one we gave a rating of 2, and we think you should avoid! We also talk about Carmela's favorite food - ice cream - and how Ben & Jerry's Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough almost led to a divorce early on in our marriage! Wines in this episode include 101 North Pinot Grigio, Liberty Creek Pinot Grigio, and Vendage Pinot Grigio. Just a warning, one of these wines smelled and tasted like a tide pool at low tide and warm garbage. Yuck! We also discuss how some of the packaging needs a makeover, why boxed wines are so ginormous, and why boxed wine has its own section separate from the varietals. And, careful listeners may win a prize!
