Eh, Yo! We have a lot to talk about this week. We are joined by Brent Bushnell one of the owners of Two Bit Circus. We chat with Brent today about Two Bit Circus, IAAPA 2024, his new project DIY Artcade, and the indie arcade space. This year I finally made it to IAAPA and got to meet Brent for the first time. Brent had a booth where Armed & Gelatinous and KungFu Kickball were displayed along side DIY Artcade. Brent comes from a family of gamers, his dad started Atari and Chuck E Cheese, and his brother Tyler has been on the show for his system Polycade. In the time that Brent has been running Two Bit Circus he has helped kids build prototypes for games they are making, this history has lead him to making DIY Artcade. An open source project to help game developers get their projects into arcade cabinets easier and cheaper than they could before. Check out the whole video to learn more about Two Bit Circus, and DIY Artcade. If you want to add indie arcade games to your arcade or personal collection go to Indiearcadewave.com. In this episode of The Edge and Beyond, host Michelle Dawn Mooney dives into the intersection of retro gaming and advanced technology with Brent Bushnell, Executive Producer at Strange Outfit, and Morgan Andersen, Vertical Segment Manager at Intel Corporation. Together, they discuss the DIY Artcade project, a build-it-yourself arcade kit that is inspiring students and hobbyists alike with its unique blend of arcade nostalgia and cutting-edge tech.Bushnell introduces the DIY Artcade as a project designed to give students a hands-on approach to learning. “Our goal is to make tech education fun and accessible. With open-source tools and an affordable price point, students can build their own arcade cabinets, develop programming and electronics skills, and even start entrepreneurial ventures,” he explains. “Imagine a high school student placing their arcade in a local coffee shop and splitting revenue with the owner—it's learning by doing in the best way.”The DIY Artcade project is powered by Intel's Mini Compute Module, which provides the necessary processing power for a seamless arcade experience without requiring a separate server. Andersen shares, “Intel's technology allows these DIY units to operate efficiently and reliably, which is essential for making the experience smooth and accessible. We're thrilled to support projects that inspire the next generation of STEM students.”In addition to technical skills, the DIY Artcade kit promotes entrepreneurship by offering students a tangible way to learn about business models through real-world applications. Bushnell adds, “From coding to configuring payment systems, these students gain a full spectrum of skills that prepare them for careers in tech and beyond.”The DIY Artcade is more than just a gaming project; it's a gateway to technology, creativity, and business learning for students. Ryan Kavanaugh has been a controversial figure in entertainment. He built a very successful business at Relativity — perhaps the largest independent movie studio, plus management businesses in sports, music, and e-sports. He also made some enemies. He was critical of the Hollywood establishment, and took some beatings in the press for his innovations. Ryan came by the studio to tell us how he's tackling the future of media and culture with Triller, building the next big Hollywood idea with the Entertainment Stock Exchange, and how he's learned to build the kind of company he wants to work for. Great lessons here from a leader who's enjoyed incredible highs and lows. My man earned his stripes and he's not afraid to share what he's learned. Over Coffee® | Stories and Resources from the Intersection of Art and Science | Exploring How to Make STEAM Work For You

Over Coffee® is on Thanksgiving hiatus.  Please enjoy this Cyber Monday special rebroadcast of one of our top episodes of 2019! In 2018, Two Bit Circus opened the world's first Micro-Amusement Park™.  And for Cyber Monday, they're offering a special that might make a nice gift for anyone on your list this year.  (Or for you!) "C'mon, what is it?"  Oh, OK.  It's unlimited play within their arcade during January. (Some restrictions apply, according to their website.) During Maker Walk L.A., in May, we had the opportunity to talk with Two Bit Circus Creative Producer Josh Randall.  Josh offered a closer look at the magic behind Two Bit Circus. This unique indoor amusement park started with the "carnival" concept.  Then, co-founders Brent Bushnell and Eric Gradman and their team added computers, lasers, virtual reality, video games and a sense of community to the mix. (Like a closer look?  Here's our coverage of Two Bit Circus's opening, just prior to their official Grand Opening in September 2018.) And Two Bit Circus keeps innovating!  Their nonprofit educational organization, Two Bit Circus Foundation, is designed to engage communities and inspire the next generation of inventors.   Indie game creators are invited to submit their creations for consideration for "Beta Nights", in which guests come in and play new games and offer feedback on them.   And a lot more is coming in 2020!   On this edition of Over Coffee®, you will hear: How Josh first began his career with Two Bit Circus; What his experiences were like, during his first days of working with the team; What’s new at the Micro Amusement Park since it opened, nine months ago; A good creative lesson Josh and the team learned, from observing visitors’ responses while adding new content and events.

"Interactive" is the key word as you explore the 38,000-square-foot complex. (Photo courtesy of Two Bit Circus, and used with permission.) Carnival elements combine with computers, robotics, VR, XR and a sense of "what if we did this?" to show visitors a great time.  Even the shows (well, especially the shows) involve participation and collaboration. On this edition of Over Coffee®, you will hear: How the Micro Amusement Park™ evolved from Eric's earlier work on STEAM Carnival with co-founder Brent Bushnell;  What the experience was like, opening the Micro Amusement Park™; One of Eric's favorite experiences (to build, and in the park); One challenge which Eric and the team face as they make "the future of fun" look easy; What visitors might experience in the interactive theatre, Club 01; Some of the new games that have been added, since the park opened in September; The element that could turn a "boring" game into a masterpiece; And, a demonstration to "make over" a type of game which some people might consider "boring"! A great STEAM resource for teachers and makers; What Eric and his team are learning, as they continue evolving the Micro Amusement Park™; What may be next!; How independent inventors can get their games previewed by the Two Bit Circus crew and their guests.

He also discusses how discomfort can push a person to make creative choices and how building a successful business isn’t one sweeping, theatrical move, but rather, a series of choices and learning opportunities. “There are two emotions in entrepreneurship,” he says. “Stark terror and total elation.”Once you’ve finished episode, visit BusinessOutlaws.com to see exclusive content and behind-the-scenes footage of BigMike, Chris, Jayme and Brent. I love games… from board to video - to competitive to cooperative. My guest this week is friend of the show Brent Bushnell, CEO and co-founder of Two Bit Circus, when we spoke to him last they were launching STEAM Carnivals in LA and SF, but now they are doing something a bit more permanent in the center of Los Angeles: Two Bit Circus, a Micro Amusement park. There’s classic carnival games, Story Rooms, a VR Arena, pinball, group games… and so much more. We talk about what a microamsuement park is, how they are not a VR arcade, and group gameplay, but first we start with the origin of Two Bit Circus.

Two clowns reimagine entertainment through micro-amusement parks. They use technology, a bit of showmanship, and a unique process of innovation to develop their immersive social games. What does the circus have to do with manufacturing? Well, the founders of Two Bit Circus are planning to build micro-amusements around the world. To do so, they're learning how to go from prototype to production on their unique games. They're about to open their first park in DTLA this summer, so I wanted a sneak peek at the new experiences they have in store. In the process we learn about their process of developing their crazy ideas. We talk about tinkering, iteration, scale, immersive experiences, and social gaming. Brent and Eric bring unique backgrounds to the company. Brent once ran a web hosting company and an automotive salvage business. He's also the son of Nolan Bushnell, the founder of Atari and Chuck E Cheese. Eric is the Mad Inventor and makes others see technology as magic. He has a colorful history as a circus performer, professional whistler & roboticist. For more information, photos, and links, check out the show notes at http://makeitinla.org/twobitcircus.

Brent Bushnell is the co-founder and CEO of Two Bit Circus, an educational entertainment company that provides a wide range of high-tech and hands-on experiences. The company's goal is not only to entertain but, more importantly, to inspire participants to become involved in engineering, computing, inventing, the arts, and other creative pursuits. Brent is himself an engineer and an entrepreneur who has founded a number of tech endeavors, including Doppelgames, a mobile game company; Anti-Aging Games, building games that reduce the risk of early memory loss; Syyn Labs, which creates content for entertainers and large corporations; and Tapcode, which provided self-service and entertainment solutions for the hospitality industry. He was an on-camera inventor for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, and he also works as a consultant and mentor for game development and entrepreneurship. Brent is the son of Nolan Bushnell, a gifted engineer and innovator and the founder of both Atari and Chuck E. Cheese. Read The Influencer Economy Book: influencereconomybook.com Brent believes strongly in the importance of the STEAM paradigm, which integrates the arts (A) with the more traditional "teaming" of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). He works hard to expose young people to STEM topics in creative, engaging ways that will inspire both their intellect and their passion and thereby lead them to become inventors and creators themselves. He targets young people largely through his project called STEAM Carnival, a traveling event that includes a giant high-tech game arcade, a battling robot band showcase, a wearable technology fashion show, and much more. In Brent's words, it's "kind of like Cirque du Soleil for games". Listen to the archives: http://www.influencereconomy.com/ Leave an iTunes review if you'd like to support us, it really helps us get discovered for new podcast listeners. Click here for the link. All of Brent's projects emphasize collaboration and interaction, and his advice for creators is no different. He has built his own companies and projects by listening to his passions and by seeking out collaborators who have similar passions and are willing to take risks. For example, when Brent started Two Bit Circus, he and his co-founder Eric Gradman started out knowing only the general direction they wanted to take. They spent the next few years experimenting with a wide variety of ideas. They funded their endeavors with entertainment consulting events (many of which allowed them to test their innovations) and invested the profits in further development. Only when they felt that they had sufficiently refined their vision did they seek out investors to accelerate their growth and mature into an established company.  In this episode, Brent encourages listeners to "get their hands dirty" and make physical things. As an engineer and high-tech entrepreneur, Brent certainly appreciates the value of digital solutions, but he also understands the importance of physical solutions in a physical world and fears that our current education system is alienating young people from that kind of thinking. Inspiration isn't just for the young, however. This podcast will inspire all of us to trust our imaginations, follow our passions, and build our dreams. Quotes from the episode: "There's no shortage of hard problems. And, frankly, no shortage of capable humans. But what we do have a shortage of are inspired, tool-capable, invention-capable humans to go out and solve those hard problems.... We've got this perfect storm of needing it badly [and] the tools are easier than they've ever been; we just need people to be aware." "I love online creation. My background is software. But I think we got carried away with the success of the internet and [thought] that all of the great innovations are gonna be apps. And that's just not the case because there's some things you can't solve with apps. You need other stuff." "I think that humans are really naturally creative and that our school system kind of beats it out of us in a very heart-wrenching and terrible process, and that what we need to now do is sort of unwind that.... The thing is to not get too much in your head about it. Just start doing stuff!" "Failure's rad! The second you fail, that means you've been out there trying and that's fantastic!" "If your motivation is to try to make a buck, you're doing it wrong."
