In the latest Nerd Out podcast, Dave is joined by Bridget Johnson to talk about the hostile event at the Top's Supermarket in Buffalo, New York. Looking at the attack through the lens of Gate 15's Hostile Events Attack Cycle (HEAC), Dave and Bridget talked about all the planning and preparedness that went into the attack as documented by the attacker's manifesto. Bridget went into length about the way the attacker outlined his beliefs while showcasing his admiration and reverence to previous attackers, especially the 2019 New Zealand mosque attacker. They wrapped up the pod with some thoughts for organizations to consider and how the lessons learned and behaviors identified can be applied to any location and organization. Bridget wrapped up up with some strong words that this manifesto is dangerous and deliberately speaks to a vulnerable group who may seek inspiration in their own lives. In addition, it represents a journey into hate that organizations need to be mindful of. Bridget Johnson is the Managing Editor for Homeland Security Today. There was no shortage of topics for the Nerd Out gang to get into this month as Dave, Bridget and Joe dug into recent events. Starting off with some follow ups to hurricane predictions, outdoor festivals, and Piers Morgan (is it marketing or misinformation), the team batted around some of some of the challenges with these areas and some recent publications that can help teams plan for moving forward. Then the nerds really got into some great discussions around monitoring and situational awareness around recent incidents in NYC (subway shooting) and Ohio (arrest of security guard), as well as the escalated protests around the Quran burning in Sweden and if organizations need to think about copy-cats or a revival of protests and demonstrations this coming summer. Wrapping up with an attempt to be fun, the gang just showed how big of nerds they are yet still managed to give some suggestions for light-hearted shows or materials. This recording is from the  NorthWest Herb Symposium. Jay and Bridget Johnson of Tree Farm Communications host this excellent event each August in Coupeville, WA. Their next event is August 23rd - 26th, 2018.  LEARN MORE CLASS DESCRIPTION Epigenomics is the study of epigenetic changes in gene expression that occur without commensurate changes in DNA base pair sequences; these changes may be transmissible to subsequent generations. Recent research in the emerging field of Epigenomics strongly supports the probabilities of therapeutic transgenerational herbalism. Epigenomics is developing in response to research showing very convincingly that many cancers are initiated and controlled by transmissible extrachromosomal mechanisms. Ryan Drum, PhD has a BSc in Chemical Technology and a PhD in Botany (Phycology) from Iowa State University. While a NATO Scholar, he did postdoctoral studies on Cell Biology using the Electron Microscope and Microcine at the Universities of Bonn, Germany and Leeds, England. For 10 years he taught Botany and related subjects at Universities (UMASS/Amherst, UCLA, WWU). He studied Herbal Medicine with Ella Birzneck, founder of Dominion Herbal College in British Columbia for 12 years, and taught at their summer seminars for 35 years. He has been an adjunct faculty at Bastyr University since 1984, and he lectures at major herbal conferences and herbal schools. Dr. Drum is the author of over 30 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals, the author of Electron Microscopy of Diatom Cells 1966, Springer Verlag, a 100-Plate Atlas, in print for 20 years, and a contributing author of two chapters in Planting the Future (Gladstar and Hirsch 2001) and a chapter in Fundamentals of Naturopathic Endocrinology, M. Friedman 2005. The proud father of three wonderful children and two fantastic grandchildren, he lives in a rustic little hilltop cabin he built over 40 years ago on a remote island, off the grid, without indoor plumbing or refrigeration. Ryan believes in true patient autonomy: the freedom and right to choose one's caregivers independent of their official certification. "A British jihadi who slipped off to Syria under UK authorities’ noses last fall has penned a pocket manual called “A Brief Guide to the Islamic State [2015]” — assuring would-be jihadis they’ll have all the comforts of home and featuring artwork of an ISIS invasion of Israel on the cover.  Siddhartha Dhar, who’s close to radical cleric Anjem Choudary and marched in his pro-Sharia events, was arrested in Britain in September on suspicion of encouraging terrorism. He jumped bail and fled to the Islamic State with his pregnant wife, who later gave birth to a boy.  He now goes by the name Abu Rumaysah al-Britani, and a couple of months ago penned an essay defending the right of fellow Briton Mohammed “Jihadi John” Emwazi to behead people. “Take the gloves off, leave the political correctness aside and be totally honest with ourselves. Yes, violence can be justified – bombs, bullets, knives, air strikes etc. are needed for the right enemy and we should not be made to feel ashamed about it,” he wrote then, adding the “identity of Jihadi John is largely irrelevant; he is after all just another soldier following orders.” Rumaysah and Choudary were arrested Sept. 25 along with seven others. He was released, didn’t comply with the order to turn over his passport and left for Syria. His past media appearances to promote radical Islam have included BBC and VICE News, and he told Channel 4 weeks before his UK escape that he’d be happy to renounce his British citizenship to live in the Islamic State.  “I hope that one day Britain gets to live under the Shariah as well,” he also told the network."
