Scott started with LEPFA in July 2001 as the Operations Manager, promoted to Vice President of Operations in April of 2005, and became the President & CEO in March 2010. Scott played a critical role in the development, changes, and success of the organization, and while we will miss his leadership and steadfastness, we wish him all the best in his new endeavor as General Manager of the North Charleston Coliseum, North Charleston Performing Arts Center, and Charleston Area Convention Center with ASM Global. We thank Scott for his nearly 23 years with the organization and over 14 years as President & CEO (longest tenured President in LEPFA's history) in service to the Lansing community. Among his many accomplishments, including: Increasing revenues at LEPFA managed properties by nearly 35% since 2010 Successfully transitioning Silver Bells in the City event operations to LEPFA Successfully transitioning Groesbeck Golf Course to management by LEPFA thus increasing golf play and revenues by 40% and eliminating the city contribution by nearly $400,000 Managing capital projects of LEPFA managed properties of nearly $60M since 2005. Negotiating and completing a renewed 10-year operating agreement with the City of Lansing and LEPFA. Helping to lead the charge in increasing the economic impact of LEPFA managed facilities/events by over $10M annually, while increasing attributable room nights by nearly 30%. Nearly 20 years as co-producer of the Common Ground Music Festival. Successfully completed his Certified Venue Executive designation in 2022. Launched the MargaritaFest, Greens & Grains, and Grand Concert Series events. Over the next few weeks, the Board of Commissioners will begin the transition and succession plan for the direction of leadership at LEPFA. “During this transition period, it's the priority of the LEPFA Board of Commissioners to find the best individual to lead, while still maintaining a stable and effective team to continue the task of fulfilling the mission of the Authority. We will share additional information as we continue along this successful path,” said Chairmen Kenric Hall, LEPFA Board of Commissioners. As a graduate of Liberty University, Georgia Southern University, and programs in the management of public assembly facilities through the University of Michigan and IAVM, Scott's long career began in the private management of various facilities around the U.S. and landed him in Lansing as a great place to further develop his career and raise a family. “It has been my privilege to serve as the President & CEO of LEPFA since 2010 and I have been blessed with the opportunity to work with a team of talented and dedicated teammates and colleagues. I am incredibly proud of the accomplishments we have all achieved together during my tenure here, “said Scott. “I am confident that the Authority will continue to thrive under the capable leadership of my successor.” ###

In this episode of The Gate 15 Interview, Andy Jabbour welcomes Akmal Ali, Founder & CEO of Aluma and inOrbit. Formerly serving as the Deputy Director of the SAFETY Act program within U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Akmal was a key contributor in expanding the scope of the program, as the department considered how to responsibly leverage the granted protections to further its mission to protect the homeland. These efforts included the expansion of for security services, cybersecurity and venue security-related applications from the private sector. The impact of this expansion is still a hallmark of the program today, as operators of many high-profile venues rely upon and engage with DHS in seeking SAFETY Act protections. At DHS, Akmal participated in extensive intra- and inter-agency collaboration with other government agencies to include the Transportation Security Administration, Customs and Border Protection, Domestic Nuclear Detection Office, U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Department of Energy, and the Federal Aviation Administration. As a result of this experience, Akmal was exposed to a wide range of industries and perspectives that helped forge the underlying principles for how Aluma serves its clients today. Since departing DHS in 2011, Akmal has carried those ideals with him as he's worked some of the country's most high-profile and innovative companies. Akmal is based in the Washington, DC area. There was no shortage of topics for the Nerd Out gang to get into this month as Dave, Bridget and Joe dug into recent events. Starting off with some follow ups to hurricane predictions, outdoor festivals, and Piers Morgan (is it marketing or misinformation), the team batted around some of some of the challenges with these areas and some recent publications that can help teams plan for moving forward. Then the nerds really got into some great discussions around monitoring and situational awareness around recent incidents in NYC (subway shooting) and Ohio (arrest of security guard), as well as the escalated protests around the Quran burning in Sweden and if organizations need to think about copy-cats or a revival of protests and demonstrations this coming summer. Wrapping up with an attempt to be fun, the gang just showed how big of nerds they are yet still managed to give some suggestions for light-hearted shows or materials. The nerds then turned the clock back to look at some of the takeaways from 2021 while looking ahead to 2022 to see what organizations can do to start planning for. And for all the areas that were covered, there were so many more highlighting the continued challenge that organizations face. https://entrearchitect.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/blackWhiteKSGcloseup.jpg ()Experiencing the Profession from Two Unique Perspectives As a child Katherine knew two things for certain: she would become an architect, and she was not a boy. The path to architecture took her to the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee School of Architecture and then into several prestigious midwestern architectural firms. Katherine's first architectural project was programming and designing the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre Complex. The award-winning project was the result of intense workshops and benchmarking sessions with everyone of MRT's company members. The project also proved that a non-profit theatre group could be the corner stone of a larger mixed-use development. The principles, of inclusive design and understanding the projects impact on the greater community informed her design process for the Over the next 30+ years. She has remained focused on designing performing arts venues around the country and in 2013 she founded ORCHESTRA Design Studio, to create spaces that encourage social interactions, celebrate our diverse cultural experiences so we can find our common values and transcend our fear of the other. Becoming her true self was a more difficult journey. A major milestone in the journey was coming out at NATEAC 2016's session on Inclusive Gender Design . She knew that being surrounded by her peers was the best time to leave the closet. Her reward was overwhelming support and encouragement. Given her a newfound confidence, inner peace, and happiness. Since then, USITT, IAVM, AIA, the Medical College of Wisconsin, and several corporations have invited Katherine to present on transgender issues and the importance of supporting LGBT+ rights. She is looking forward to being part of the updated session Design for All Genders – Inclusive Design for Practitioners and Patrons at NATEAC 2021. We are happy to be speaking to a highly respected icon in our industry today! Brad Mayne is the President and CEO of IAVM (International Association of Venue Managers). He has had a phenomenal career and is joining us today to talk about his experiences. In this episode, Brad shares his most cherished memories of the MetLife Stadium, explains what it was like to work with Mark Cuban, and talks about what he sees for the future of the meetings and events industry. We hope you enjoy listening to our interview with Brad Mayne today! Brad Mayne's bio: Brad Mayne is President and Chief Executive Officer of the International Association of Venue Managers (IAVM) and the IAVM Foundation. IAVM represents public venue professionals from around the globe. Professional members manage public assembly venues that are positive economic organizations within their communities. A diverse list of member venues includes arenas, convention centers, exhibit halls, performing arts centers, universities, stadiums, complexes, festivals, fairgrounds, amphitheaters, and race tracks. Under Mayne's leadership over the past five years, the IAVM has averaged 10% membership growth each year and has grown revenues by 35.5%. In collaboration with industry associations, IAVM has created initiatives that strengthen the industries we serve with partners VMA, AMEREF, IAEE, ESCA, DI, and ISSA. Initiatives include, but are not limited to safety and security, economic impact calculator, biohazard sanitation certification and diversity, equity, and inclusion. Active in the communities Mayne has resided in, he has served on the Board of Directors for DMOs, Super Bowl XLVIII, Cotton Bowl Classic, Sports Commissions, and Chambers of Commerce. Brad has vast management experience in professional sports venues including President & CEO, MetLife Stadium 2012-2016; President & CEO, American Airlines Center 1998-2012; and GM & Regional Manager, Honda Center, Ogden Entertainment 1991-1998. How it all started At the age of 14, Brad was selling hotdogs at the University of Utah football games. He met the people in the ticket office who were also doing lots of other events. They needed staff to sell tickets, so when Brad turned 16, they employed him to do that. He sold tickets at events that were hosted by the university but held at other venues. An apprenticeship and a degree Brad's dad wanted him to get a degree, but Brad wanted to be a plumber. So, he did an apprenticeship to be a plumber while studying for his degree at the University of Utah. A scholarship Brad's brother was the Assistant Baseball Coach and the Assistant Ticket Manager when Brad was at the age to go to university. So Brad got a scholarship to sell tickets in the ticket office for the Athletic Department. Placing advertisements During Brad's third year in college, he was asked to be responsible for placing all the advertisements to market their special events. A drop in compensation After four years of plumbing, Brad chose to take a big drop in compensation and start doing work related to his degree. Three arenas Brad was involved in the design and construction of three arenas. Favorite venue Brad got asked to be the CEO for a new Dallas arena, working for the owners of the Mavericks and the Stars. He was responsible for the financing, design, and construction, and for the opening and operation of what is now the American Airlines Center. Brad Mayne's impression of Mark Cuban Brad Mayne met Mark Cuban for the first time when he introduced himself to Mark just after the media announced that he had bought the Mavericks. Mark is very focused, and he is loyal to those who work for him. He did not sleep much, so Brad often got emails from him in the early hours of the morning. Mark gave Brad two tips for how he wanted him to run his company: If it ain't broke, break it. If everyone is thinking the same way, no one is thinking. Brad found Mark to be a very good person to work for. Brad Mayne's best MetLife Stadium memory Brad's best memory of running the MetLife Stadium was hosting the Super Bowl. Safety and security The whole ecosystem of meetings is large, so show organizers want to be safe and are risk-averse. Insurance for major catastrophes is expensive and hard to get. The Safety Act Certification is an insurance policy because it gives money coverage in the case of an attack. You have to put together a security plan to get the certification. Streaming When they were designing a building, Mark Cuban told Brad that if he was not building the building for future technologies, he was making a big mistake. Brad feels that the same thing applies to streaming versus broadcasting. People need to understand that if they are not in the streaming industry when it swings to become the dominant vehicle for showing their product, they will fall behind the rest. Hybrid meetings Brad believes that there will be a place for hybrid moving forward, so we need to embrace and understand it. Virtual meetings Brad had only five weeks to put his first virtual event, their annual conference, together. They recreated what they did live. Their members appreciated it and asked for more networking opportunities. Other members who could not afford the live event were grateful to attend it online. They felt that making the conference available online was the best thing that IAVM has ever done. Brad Mayne's suggestion for a strategic business plan Put a strategic business plan together for what you will do for people online and what you will be doing face-to-face moving forward. Do not be afraid to step forward and make something happen, Brad says. You can keep on improving things as you move ahead. The younger generation The new, younger generation coming into the business wants to flip the tables of who is in charge. So, prepare for that digitally, or else you could be in for a big awakening. Post-pandemic People need to realize that things will not go back to the way they were pre-pandemic. Operating a venue is not simple. The staff will have to be trained to operate specific venues and all the equipment, with safety protocols in place to keep everyone safe. Webinars The IAVM has been hosting webinars to inform people about how to hire people and discuss the available resources. Technology There are multiple technologies to speed up the process of getting people into buildings. Infrared scanning can check peoples' temperatures. Facial recognition is also coming into play. There is no question that AI will become important for business operations and potentially for event presentations. Data and data analytics The meetings and events industry has started turning to data-driven decisions. Getting hold of the data allows you to manage things and be successful. Reverse ATMs will become commonplace going forward. They will also supply data. In the latest episode of Nerd Out, Dave and his merry band of nerdies, Bridget, Travis, and Joe, look at the latest news around the reopening and what organizations need to be on guard for as crowd sizes and capacity limits will test the ongoing health pandemic. Then the group looks at the way threat actors may respond. Will it be a target of opportunity or will new security measures be disruptive enough. Next, the panel looked at recent protests, and the potential for future protests (did people really forget about May Day!) and what ways they may change in a reopened world. Finally, what is the future of conspiracy theories and the movements that were charged over the past several years? The group then lightened it up a bit and went through some lightning round questions and discovered that the Snyder Cut really isn't a thing because no one particularly cared for it in the first place to even know it was a thing. In the latest episode of Nerd Out, it was a five star day for Dave. First, you can hear him open up with his "Warrrrshington" versus President's Day poll (did you see what I did there), followed by the group getting into a discussion about behaviors and indicators of hostile events related to recent arrests and incidents in Singapore, Norway, and Minnesota, and the role that mental health plays a role into it. The team then looks at reporting such instances, before getting into the Florida Water breach and the ramifications as it highlights the various ways blended threats can have an impact to organizations. Unfortunately a real-time weather event prevented the group from getting into their lightning round (no pun intended considering the weather event), but not before Bridget was able to share her true feelings for a certain seven time Super Bowl winning quarterback. IAVM’s Mark Herrera discusses how risk assessment is evolving. When it comes to identifying and reducing event security risks, planners must navigate a constantly shifting landscape. Health concerns around Covid-19 continue to dominate most event professionals’ concerns, but over the last month worries about disruptions from civil unrest have taken on growing importance. In Northstar’s recent PULSE Survey, a number of respondents mentioned, unsolicited, that civil unrest is an issue that’s impacting their events. To address these issues, we spoke with Mark Herrera, director of education for the International Association of Venue Managers. Herrera brings more than two decades of law enforcement experience to this role, and he draws on that to train managers who host large gatherings. In this episode of Eventful: The Podcast for Meeting Professionals, he discusses what the Jan. 6 attack at the Capitol could mean for venue security more broadly, as well as the strategies he teaches to help his members ensure that events are held safely. Herrera also will be a presenter at Northstar Meetings Group’s upcoming Back to Booking digital event, taking place on Feb. 23. My guest today, on the confidence inspiring Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man who at his core understands that true business success is built by making the experience that customers feel, as good as humanly possible. Take a look at all the big boys, Amazon, Apple, Virgin to name just three, all have a background on providing what will make the customer truly satisfied (even if the customer doesn't know they want it at first.) He is the owner of Triple R Marketing, where with over 20 years' experience in Marketing and Sales, he has helped small local businesses and brand-name Fortune 500 companies alike become leaders in their industry. He has worked alongside world-renowned author and sales expert Jeffrey Gitomer, and has helped businesses promote their products at high-profile events such as the Sport Emmy Awards, although never once losing sight of the small things that make such a big difference to his customers. Such as the astonishing tale of buying a complete caramel shop from closing for business, simply because his customers loved the handmade caramel packs that had quickly became a key part of his business. When he got word that the store was closing, the entrepreneur in him kicked in. He knew he had to reach an agreement with Fischer to keep the caramels available for everyone and in January of 2016 he took over as the new owner of Joan's Caramels. And if that isn't enough on his plate, he developed an app called Fanvious that allows food and merchandise to be delivered to your seat while at a sporting event or concert. And with the success of the app he has been featured on the weekly television program Inside Indiana and also spoke at the IAVM 2015 Arena Management Conference on the ‘New Technology for Improved Fan Engagement.' So what is it that excites him most invention, or satisfaction? Is it the creation or how his customers respond to his work that gets him out of bed with a spring in his step? Well let's find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots with the one and only Mr. Matt Rudelinger. Show Highlights During the show we discussed such weighty topics with Matt Ruedlinger such as: Why he feels it is so important to allow free-time within his business to be there for his family, which is a core value of starting his entrepreneurial route in the first place. Why being satisfied by the service that we receive as a customer is now the absolute minimum that we should expect from a business. Which makes it harder and harder to create viral word of mouth support. Why Matt loves the metaphor that there is a reason why the front windscreen to a car is a lot bigger than the rear. As it's only what's in front that truly matters in life. and lastly…. If you are going to close down your business then always think "How will my customers react to this" and if you think they wont be happy, then find another way of operating.

Paula Yancey became President of PC Sports in 2010. She is recognized throughout the sports design and construction industry as the consummate professional. She is active in industry groups such as IAVM and has been active as a speaker to various industry trade organizations and community groups My conversation today with Paula Portz, President of PC Sports is interesting for a couple different reasons. One, she embodies what it means to stay the course, grow within a career field, and continually take on higher levels of responsibility. The second is, this is no “typical” career field. Imagine being a successful woman in two male dominated career fields; construction and the sports industry! In 2011 Paula was named a “Game Changer” by The Sports Business Journal, and is again being recognized by the Sports Business Journal's inaugural list of “Power Players: The Minds Behind Design and Development” in today's issue. While I have talked with a lot of people who have taken great risks and tried to outrace everyone to get where they are, there is a lot to say about maintaining your focus, knowing what you want, and growing both personally and professionally into that vision. Best Advice: The worst that could happen is you fail. You can regroup and try again. But, the worst is that you didn't try at all. The one thing you know to be true: The person that you are will always come back to you. If you are honest and truthful and fair, that will come back to you.
