Audio taken from Tiff's live teaching at Charleston Church in May of 2024.Knowing what we believe is important, but knowing WHY we believe what we believe is necessary to be an effective Christian witness. In our study today, we go over the meaning of “apologia” and apologetics, as well as go over five ways we know that we can trust the Bible:1. Evidence of science2. Evidence of Biblical archeology3. Evidence of manuscripts4. Evidence of the Resurrection5. Evidence of prophecyIf you prayed with Tiff, click here https://lostlamb.org/just-got-saved and let him know! Dylann Roof's name is indelibly etched into a harrowing chapter of hatred, evil, prejudice and violence. In a moment that defied comprehension and armed with the intent of igniting a Race War, Roof unleashed a torrent of gunfire on June 17, 2015, within the hallowed walls of the Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. His chillingly calculated actions claimed the lives of nine innocent souls, forever impacting the community and homes from which they were taken. The chilling motive behind his heinous act, coupled with the profound impact it had on a series of families bound by faith and resilience, serves as a stark reminder of the darkness that can be hidden beneath the surface of society... Pastor Darcy Ward from Charleston Church teaches us the importance of knowing that nothing can separate us from the love of God. This week Aja tells Devon the case of the Charleston Race Massacre. On June 17, 2015, twelve members of the historically black Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina welcomed a young white man to their evening Bible study. He arrived with a pistol, 88 bullets, and hopes of starting a race war. Dylann Roof's massacre of nine innocents during their closing prayer horrified the nation. Two days later, some relatives of the dead stood at Roof's hearing and said, “I forgive you.” That grace offered the country a hopeful ending to an awful story. But for the survivors and victims' families, the journey had just begun.

Chris Singleton, former professional athlete, author and motivational speaker lost his mother in the infamous “Charleston Church Shooting” (Summer of 2015 at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church). Chris recounts that dreadful day of losing his mother and shares how those moments transpired behind those dreadful closed doors. Chris, son of slain Pastor Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, speaks on the miracle of forgiveness and how folks like Dylan Roof (shooter) are the way they are because of being misled and misinformed. Together, Joey and Chris speculate how far along society is in bridging the race gap. **Other episodes with related content listed at very bottom.**In honor of black history month, we celebrate these lives (along with their families):Pastor Sharonda Coleman-Singleton (45)Pastor Clementa C. While the Internet has given us a lot of good things, from comprehensive consumer choices to powerful movements to hold the powerful accountable, it also has its darker corners where hatred is thriving, where acts of terrible violence in the real world are inspired. As a Jewish writer who had often been targeted by anti-Semitic and misogynistic attacks online, Talia Lavin decided to go undercover and dive deep into these strange online worlds, where she finds deeply vulnerable, alienated, and dangerous individuals who pose a considerable threat to society. Her latest book, "Culture Warlords: My Journey into the Dark Web of White Supremacy," presents a number of real stories of people she encountered during these investigations which helps us understand how extremists find themselves pulled toward white nationalism online. Lavin argues that it is wrong for us to consider white nationalist terror attacks such as the Charleston Church shooting, the attack on the Christchurch mosque, or the Tree of Life Synogogue shooting in Pittsburg as "lone wolf" attacks. Instead, these attacks are being carried out by individuals who are specifically radicalized. "It doesn't take that many people influenced by an extremely heightened level of violent rhetoric by a continual saturation in dehumanization to create tremendous amounts of fear and to rip communities apart with grief," Lavin says. "I would say that I'm still pretty scared of these guys. Sometimes their fragility means that they're ripe for mockery. Other times, it means they're ripe to snap." Lavin and host Robert Amsterdam discuss the history of anti-Semitism in the United States, and how it came to represent a intellectual keystone for US white supremacists, and how, in its international expression, anti-Semitism is trans-partisan, a rhetorical force mobilized on the right and the left. "The real rhetorical function of the Jew, the reason why Jews are such a persistent target, is that they have more or less assimilated into whiteness," Lavin says. "So they get portrayed by the white power movement in the US as a cunning kind of fifth column subverting whiteness from within. (...) So the primary function that the Jews serve is this idea of a kind of omnipotent, infinitely resourceful, infinitely cunning enemy that is hell bent on your destruction." And in doing so, Lavin agues, the men hiding in these darkest corners of the Internet come to believe that they are the most oppressed members of society, that it is they who have a duty to right the wrongs - often by violent means.

Since the tragedies of the Unite the Right Rally in Charlottesville and the Charleston Church shooting that killed nine black members, the display of monuments and flags representing the fallen Confederacy have been hotly debated. Are they racist symbols of hate or are they symbols of an unshakable Southern pride? Arguing that the American Civil War was fought over states' rights instead of the preservation of slavery, this alternative narrative called The Lost Cause is still taught in the majority of high school classes today. On this episode, we will explore the true reasons for the Civil War in the words of confederate leaders as well as the words of Union president Abraham Lincoln, words which demonstrate that this heroes-versus-villains story isn’t as simple as it seems. We will also trace these monuments and symbols back to the movements for Civil Rights, when most of them were actually constructed, during the second rise of the KKK in the 1920s and the battles over segregation in the 1950s and 60s. We’ll ask the question, does the veneration of the Confederacy really represent Southern pride, or does it degrade it? And more importantly, is the story we tell worth the cost? This week we're talking about forgiveness. This subject is about a year old. We had initially planned on bringing it up when we talked about the Charleston Church massacre and, at the time, we decided against it. A week ago, we were watching a documentary about Black Wall Street and toward the end there was a portion where they talked about how the survivors (said they) forgave so they could forget the massacre. That portion of the documentary was what we had planned on basing our feelings about black people's peculiar relationship with forgiveness...and then the Amber Guyger hug-fest happened and we felt like we had to purge ourselves of our feelings before both of our heads exploded.
Saxophonist and Kent State University music teacher Chris Coles has spent the past two years creating a performance piece that he hopes will raise awareness about racial injustice. Coles says it was a turning point in his life.

We talk with Jennifer Berry Hawes, author of the book “Grace Will Lead Us Home: The Charleston Church Massacre and the Hard, Inspiring Journey to Forgiveness.” In memoriam: The nine people killed in the massacre at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in 2015. With hosts Sarah Germain Lily and Jennifer Cardenas, and music by Sing Out Louise.
Many remember where they were when they heard the news: nine people gunned down inside an historic African American church in Charleston at the hands of a stranger they welcomed to bible study. But few know the passage they read. Reporter Jennifer Berry Hawes does. "It's called the 'Parable of the Sower,'" she says. "It's a story where Jesus talks about what happens when you throw seeds of faith onto different types of terrain." Hawes writes about the tragedy in her first book, "Grace Will Lead Us Home: The Charleston Massacre and the Hard, Inspiring Journey to Forgiveness. ."
Monday marks four years since 12 members of the historically black Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, welcomed a young white man to join their bible study group. When their eyes shut for a closing prayer, he pulled out a Glock pistol and fired 77 rounds, killing nine people. In the days and weeks that followed, the nation learned about the lives of the people killed in the racially motivated massacre. Families of some victims told the shooter they forgave him. Amid an outpouring of support for survivors, South Carolina legislators debated and voted to remove the Confederate flag from the South Carolina State House.

Thursday 3/15- The word of the day was "spicy" because that is all The Breakfast Club was about today, mixed in with some beige rage and apologies. Desus and Mero stopped by and DJ Envy did not waste anytime unleashing his beige rage when confronting them about their comments towards his wife. But even that didn't stop the jokes from coming. In fact it brought such an impact that we went to "Breakfast Club Court" and asked our listeners if Dj Envy overreacted. Moreover, Charlamagne gave "Donkey of the Day" to Morgan Roof the Charleston Church shooter's sister for bringing a weapon and marijuana to school. A 21-year-old white man identified as Dylann Roof recently killed nine people at a historic African-American church in Charleston, South Carolina as the churchgoers were praying. Following the massacre, officials discovered Roof’s nearly 2,500-word manifesto criticizing Blacks as being inferior. The Shadow of Ideas - History, Politics, and Current Events on the Edge
Raymond explores the connections between a 21st Century mass shooting and a 19th century slave rebellion that both took place in the same church in Charleston, SC. He probes into the possible motives which may have been the catalysts for Dylann Storm Roof to open fire on the congregation at the historic Emanuel AME Church on June 17, 2015. Raymond ponders the significance of one of the victims, Reverend and Senator Clementa Pinckney, who was an up and coming figure in the Democratic Party. This recent mass shooting has a historical correlation to one of the founders of the Emanuel AME Church, Denmark Vesey, and the Vesey Rebellion of 1822. The subsequent kangaroo trial and executions were criticized by Governor Thomas Bennett for the lack of due process and damaging South Carolina's reputation.
