Larry Serra is a former Naval Intelligence Liaison Officer whose covert missions along the Vietnam-Cambodia border placed him at the heart of one of the Vietnam War's most dangerous fronts. From 1967 to 1970, Larry served as an officer in the United States Navy, spending nearly two years operating in Vietnam and Cambodia's combat zones. In 1969, he volunteered for the critical intelligence post at Ha Tien, where he ran spy networks, crossed into Cambodia for clandestine missions, and exposed communist supply routes into South Vietnam. His work uncovered Soviet communications intercepts and revealed vulnerabilities at the port of Sihanoukville, a key hub of communist weapons smuggling. In early 1970, Larry brokered a top-secret weapons agreement between the U.S. and the Cambodian Navy - approved by the White House - as Cambodia teetered on the brink of civil war.For his actions, Larry received the Bronze Star, Navy Commendation Medal with Combat "V," Air Medal, and other decorations. After Vietnam, he built a distinguished legal career and played a pivotal role in helping rebuild Cambodia's legal system following the fall of the Khmer Rouge. FOLLOW JACKInstagram: @JackCarrUSA X:  @JackCarrUSAFacebook:  @JackCarr YouTube:  @JackCarrUSASPONSORSCRY HAVOC – A Tom Reece Thriller https://www.officialjackcarr.com/books/cry-havoc/Bravo Company Manufacturing - BCM Stock MOD3:https://bravocompanyusa.com/bcm-stock-mod-3-black/  and on Instagram @BravoCompanyUSATHE SIGs of Jack Carr:Visit https://www.sigsauer.com/ and on Instagram @sigsauerinc Jack Carr Gear: Explore the gear here https://jackcarr.co/gear

Interview with Robert "RJ" Thomas retired Navy Seal.Years of Service: 1963-1995This is Episode 100, featuring Navy Seal RJ Thomas, who has been twice nominated for the Medal of Honor and is a recipient of the Navy Cross. On March 23, 1969, United States Navy Seal Robert J “R.J.” Thomas was flying in one of two Seawolf helicopters that were on a scouting mission near Nuy Da Dung Mountain in Vietnam. As the helicopter approached the mountain, they came under heavy weapons fire and were shot down from about 300 feet with no time for the helicopter to autorotate. RJ was hanging out the side door on a gunner belt when several rounds came through the helo, fragmenting and hitting him in the chest. As the helicopter hit the ground, RJ was thrown about 40 feet from the helicopter crash. RJ was stripped of his sidearm, and his Stoner 64A machine gun had been bent, rendering it inoperable. He had compression-fractured vertebrae and multiple impact wounds to his torso, knee, and hand, and his nose was nearly torn from his face. RJ made his way back to the helicopter, which was now on fire. RJ was able to drag the unconscious pilot Dick Barr from his seat and drag him away from the flames. It was around this time that the second helicopter landed and was able to drop door gunner Dan Riordan to assist, and both were able to get gunner Rick Abbott free and away from the helicopter. They were unable to save anyone else as the fire engulfed the helicopter. The enemy began moving toward the survivors to kill or capture them. As RJ observed his surroundings, he realized the only thing he had left to shoot was the pilot's 1911A1 .45 pistol. The pilot had two fully loaded magazines as well as a chest strap with an extra 45-50 rounds. Shielding Barr's body with his own and using Barr's body and helmet as a stable platform, RJ began shooting the oncoming enemy. At some point, Barr regained consciousness and began loading magazines for Thomas as they went empty. One thing in RJ's favor was the fact that in order for the enemy to get to him, they had to come over a dike about 100 yards away. Each time the enemy would stick their heads up over the dike, RJ would shoot them. RJ was able to hold off the enemy for nearly 40 minutes with a handgun. A rescue helicopter was finally able to land, and as RJ gave a final push to load Barr into the helo, his back gave out, and he fell to the ground. It was at this point that an enemy fighter had rushed to the front of the helicopter where there were no weapons. As the fighter raised his rifle to shoot the rescuing helicopter pilots, RJ shot and killed him with his .45. RJ was finally able to make it back into the helicopter and took over the gunner's position and the M60 machine gun. It was in this position that RJ delivered more retribution for his fallen comrades before the helicopter flew to safety. It should be noted that as the rescue chopper came in and landed, its crew noticed many dead enemy soldiers lying on the ground. Their distances from the downed helo were from 3 to about 150 yards, all shot by RJ with his M1911 .45 ACP.For his incredible courage under fire, the Army nominated RJ Thomas twice for the Medal of Honor but both times the nominations were denied. The Navy declined because RJ was an enlisted man and believed the first Medal of Honor should have been awarded to an officer. Thomas was instead awarded the second highest Navy medal, the Navy Cross, after acknowledging that Thomas had only killed one enemy soldier who had charged the helicopter. In addition to the Navy Cross, RJ was also awarded the Bronze Star, Combat V, Purple Heart, and Cross for Gallantry.RJ Thomas retired in 1995 as a Commander. He won numerous firearms matches in the military and as a civilian. He qualified as a Distinguished Marksman with the handgun and rifle and for years was acknowledged as the best shooter in the Navy. Thomas is known for instituting the Naval Special Warfare Sniper program, and the people who worked for him say he was one of the best leaders they ever worked for.

He earned two Bronze Star medals with the Combat "V", and fought in every major conflict since 1984. In this episode, Randy speaks in detail about a mission he participated in an attempt to take down Panama's dictator and drug lord, Manuel Noriega. The successful underwater strategies of the SEALS was beyond risky, and the specifics of how it was executed is compelling, to say the least. These days, Randy's relentless pursuit is to teach mental toughness to those who are willing to do what it takes. He has counseled SEAL platoon commanders and members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He is a skilled teacher, leader, tactical advisor, and President of Old 18 Information Services. Randy's Book co-written with Brian “lucky” Riley: Unwavered: The Self-Belief of a Navy SEAL and TOPGUN Pilot In this episode you will hear: • I liked it. Jumping out of a Hilo - all that stuff - I'm kinda like “Okay, this it kinda it.” (9:08) • I tell people that BUD/S was the most adult experience of my life. (12:39) • It just a miserable program being in fleet. (12:47) • I hated every second of the fleet part of the Navy. (13:00) • [Manuel] Noriega was the king of drugs and all the other things bad. If you can remove God from society, he did everything that would happen once you do that. (22:34) • President Bush, Sr. made him [Noriega] a target for – let's just say “extraction.” (22:51) • This was a completely soft-oriented mission- to go down and get Noriega. Everybody went down there to get one guy. To get him out of the country and turn that country over to the next democratic leader. He was just pumping drugs into the US. (23:50) • I loved the whole BUD/S experience. (59:04) • There is no comparison, in my opinion, for any other training on the planet. (59:47) • Once you make it through Hell Week, I don't want to say you're a Team guy, but you have really done something. 80% of the other people are already gone. (61:0) • I am full, 100% against body armor. Period. Dot. (75:35) • I don't think you take a special warfare SEAL, and put him in body armor to do anything. I'd rather move fast and quick with a group of guys. (75:41) • We took all the basic stuff we were teaching and put it in that book, Unwavered. If you have unwavering self-belief, then you can accomplish anything. (90:30) • You're talking about an all-consuming mindset. That's the only thing you're thinking about. And if you allow all external influences (cancers) to weigh you down, you're never gonna make it. (91:25) • Your ability to survive is based on your ability to fight on their terms, to be sneaky, to know their tactics. It was super challenging. (98:34)

Jack and I perform these live, front to back, no breaks, no fakes, no retakes. This is Season 5, Move It or Lose It. This season contains original stories paying homage to the vehicles that propel mysteries forward. A train was the setting for Agatha Christie's famed Murder on the Orient Express. A river boat then took center stage on Death on the Nile. Cars have been prominently featured in American crime stories with the glory of the get-a-way vehicle. Then there are the heists from carriages to trains to armored trucks. For Episode 9, a LCU is the featured vehicle. That is who they are, whether they are a protector or a fighter, but it doesn't mean that you're bloodthirsty or that you hope for war”, says today's guest of the Endurance Cartel.   Mike Scotti joined the United States Marine Corps Reserves while still an undergraduate at the University of Miami, Florida. After graduation, Scotti attended the Marine Corps Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Virginia. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant and served four years on active duty as an artillery officer and platoon commander in the First Marine Division. He was among the first American troops into both Pakistan and Afghanistan in the Fall of 2001 and was deployed to Iraq in early 2003. He was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal with Combat “V” for actions under fire and then was honorably discharged.   But, his fighting days were not over yet, as he found himself struggling to survive his post-war darkness. He found solace in helping others get through their own traumas, and while he was attending NYU Stern, Mike founded the Military Veterans Club. Later on, he was a founding Board of Directors member for the military charity Reserve Aid, which has raised over $5 million and assisted over 4,000 veteran families in need.   In hopes of letting go of the past, he decided that the best thing to do is to openly talk about his experiences. He co-produced and starred in the award-winning documentary Severe Clear, using his personal combat footage to chronicle his time in Iraq, and wrote The Blue Cascade: A Memoir of Life after War.   Join Javier Pineda on this new episode, and listen to Mike's story of surviving the real battle, the one raging inside.     In today's episode:   (01:14) Meet today's guest, Mike Scotti, author, filmmaker, speaker, philanthropist, and U.S. Marine veteran; (02:38) Joining the Marines and getting the sense of belonging to something bigger than himself; (07:09) When 9/11 happened he was among the first American troops in both Pakistan and Afghanistan; that's when he shot the footage that later on was used in Severe Clear- a documentary that explores the Marine drive to Baghdad during the 2003 invasion of Iraq; (18:09) There's no place for doubts and fear when you're a Marine- the realities of training for combat and people he would lay down his life for ; (39:25) Finding the right outlet to help him let go of the past, and helping other veterans face their demons and talk about what they've gone through; (48:12) The real endurance test- staying focused when knowing that he was responsible for everyone around him going home alive; (54:51) His father- the man that set the standard in going the extra mile to help others; (01:01:18) Mike's advice- “Look back through your life and understand that sense of perspective, understand the current problems through that lens, and harness the power of discipline”; (01:03:39) Working on releasing a new book and a tv/ streaming series called "Tailspin Finland"; (01:08:53) Are TV shows trying to depict boot camps and endurance training a hoax?   (01:13:18) True family and brotherhood and mottos that marines live by “Esprit de corps” & “Never Above You, Never Below You, Always Beside You”.     Quotes:   “You train how you fight and you learn your lessons very quickly(...) That's one of the reasons why the marine corps are absolutely vicious in combat.”   “You're not thinking about politics when you're there. When the bullets are flying, you think about winning the battle which means neutralizing or destroying and killing the enemy shooting at you.”   “A good leader leads from the front, a good leader walks the lines and meets the men, no matter where it is.”   “For me, the will to fight and do all these other things just comes from a love for fellow veterans. It first started with seeing young marines and young soldiers coming back from the war, and there was that little bit of an echo. There's a whole generation of young marines and soldiers who have seen sustained combat that need to talk about it.”   “She died violently. What Up, Get Up Nation? My name is Ben Biddick, the Host of the Get Up Nation Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball player and CEO of Lurong Living, Adam Greenberg. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with Richard “Buzz” Bryan and Alejandro Villanueva. Buzz served in the United States Navy as a corpsman and deployed to Iraq with United States Marines. During his service in combat he earned a Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Combat V, Combat Action Ribbon with a Star, Fleet Marine Force Device, and more. His commitment and intensity to serve his country and the Marines he patrolled with was unparalleled. When I spoke with some of the Marines Buzz served with, they did not hesitate to share stories about his maturity, leadership, and dedication that contributed to preserving and saving the lives of Marines in combat during the Global War on Terror. After completing his military service, Buzz continued to serve those who went into harm’s way. The intensity of his commitment to serve veterans led him into a variety of dangerous and interesting circumstances to help ensure that veterans were receiving sufficient and satisfying support. His duties as an outreach coordinator for the VA connected him with a person named Alejandro Villanueva. Alejandro is a veteran himself. He is a graduate of West Point and completed Infantry, Airborne, and Ranger Schools. He served with the 10th Mountain Division and the First Ranger Battalion. He completed 3 tours of duty in Afghanistan. His actions during combat operations earned him a variety of awards and commendations including a Bronze Star with “V” Device. If you are listening to this and you don’t know the significance of the V attached to this medal, it means Alejandro earned this award by demonstrating heroism or valor in combat. More specifically, Alejandro, who stands 6 feet 9 inches tall rescued wounded soldiers while under enemy fire. And by the way, Alejandro is also the starting left tackle of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
