The U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service provided $1.25 million for the project, announced by Governor Jim Justice. The refurbishing aims to secure access for future generations while safeguarding the area's unique flora. The current boardwalk, built in the late 1950s to 1960s, prevents damage to the fragile plant population in the area. The Cranberry Glades Botanical Area is home to rare pink orchids and various carnivorous plant species, with ecological ties to Canada. Nucor Steel got the ball rolling two years ago when it announced a new, big plant in Mason County. Berkshire Hathaway Energy then broke ground on expansive operations in Jackson County; Toyota is growing in Putnam County; Marshall University is building a huge cyber security lab in Cabell County. With a lot of growth coming to all four counties, they have created REACT, which stands for “Regional Economic Alliance of Counties Together.” The collaborative effort will focus on common needs such as roads, water, sewer, housing, and more. Commissioners say creating REACT is important and practical because so many people live in one of these counties but work or go to school in another one of the counties. Features of the new playground focused on accessibility include a sensory wave ramp, interactive educational panels, shaded gathering spaces, quiet decompression areas, braille panels, rock climbers and musical instruments. The updated space will be a National Demonstration Site for Inclusion, as granted by commercial playground equipment manufacturer GameTime. Wheeling Park has become one of the company's premier playgrounds. As part of the distinction, a series of surveys will be performed by the company to determine how guests use and respond to new activities at the site. The other main goal of the updates is to incorporate nature into the play space. The maintenance and landscaping of the area will be given attention to “ensure a well-maintained and visually appealing playground for everyone to enjoy,” said Marketing Director Wendy Hodorowski. The Salt Lake Tribune's Mormon Land
Should an ‘inspired' but imperfect Constitution be celebrated? | Episode 294

The Salt Lake Tribune's Mormon Land

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 14, 2023 37:36

The Utah Area Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sent a memo last month to the faith's lay leaders in the Beehive State, urging their congregations to join a September celebration of the U.S. Constitution. Nothing remarkable about that. Church teachings and culture have long embraced America's founding and the role its governing document plays. But the missive also endorsed a grassroots group with ties to conservative — some say extremist — causes. This seemed to run counter to the governing First Presidency's recently updated commitment to political neutrality and its warning against straight-ticket partisan loyalties. So what's happening here? Were these dual directives or dueling directives? Can the church and its members honor the Constitution in some formal way without drifting into partisan polarization? Discussing those questions and more on this week's show are two Latter-day Saints with extensive public service backgrounds: Stewart Tuttle, a career diplomat who recently served as chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy in Panama, and Lew Cramer, who helped found World Trade Center Utah, served as an assistant commerce secretary in the Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations, and works as director general of the U.S. Commercial Service.

Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Thursday, June 8  Trade Winds ASEAN opens doors for WV small businesses--#YesWV…WV's STEM education program cited as a model to follow…and anglers, get ready for Free Fishing Weekend this Saturday and Sunday!...on today's daily304. #1 – From WV ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT –  Trade Winds ASEAN was a resounding success. The export program opens doors for #YesWV small businesses, visiting three countries and disbursing over $19,000 in STEP funding. “We found the event really opens up a lot of doors for us,” said Francis Goossens, global business development manager, TROY Group. “We felt it was really very efficient; in one or two days you can get so many contacts that you wouldn't be able to do by traveling around in a week or two.” “All around it's a great learning opportunity. If you haven't exported yet, it's an awesome opportunity for you to learn from and network with experienced exporters, U.S. Commercial Service officers, and others with expertise in the region,” said Justin Seibert, president, Direct Online Marketing. Its focus? Delivering healthcare to rural and underserved communities. The West Virginia model starts kids as early as 9th grade to acquire the skills needed to enter the health professions. “The difference it has made in their lives,” said Bethany Hornbeck, a West Virginia health education consultant, “In their communities – these kids are the first generation to go to college, a lot of them. They're from low-income backgrounds, they're African-American, and they're rural. These are kids who would not necessarily be going to college.” The program approaches 30 years of success in the Mountain State. Successful completion leads to a tuition waiver to any in-state college. West Virginia's Free Fishing Weekend returns this weekend, June 10-11. The annual event is part of a nationwide effort to make fishing more accessible to the public. During these two days, residents and nonresidents are able to fish for free in West Virginia's public lakes, streams, and rivers without having to buy a license. “As a lifelong angler, I know firsthand that fishing in West Virginia is one of the most joyous things you can do in this world,” Gov. Justice said. “I want to encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity to try fishing out or to introduce someone you know to the sport we all love so much.” As part of Free Fishing Weekend, the WVDNR will host its annual fishing derby for kids at Little Beaver State Park on June 10. The event gives children an opportunity to receive basic fishing instruction and to enjoy time outdoors with friends and family.  Read more: https://wvdnr.gov/gov-justice-announces-free-fishing-weekend-to-take-place-june-10-11/   Find these stories and more at wv.gov/daily304. In Edible-Alpha® podcast #116, Sarah sits down with Chris Wojtowicz, international trade consultant with the Wisconsin Small Business Development Center (SBDC). With 30 years of experience in trade development and trade compliance, he helps small businesses statewide plan and execute their global strategies.   According to Chris, less than 1% of U.S. companies export, yet more than 95% of the world's market lies outside the U.S. Therefore, selling excess capacity overseas or simply expanding internationally could be a smart play for food and farm businesses. Many entrepreneurs assume it'll be too complicated, expensive, or scary, but Chris insists it doesn't have to be. It just requires research, planning, and tapping into the right resources. Chris tells clients to first evaluate their product, its benefits, and the reason consumers want to buy it. Then explore various international markets to learn whether they are importing similar products and/or would have a desire for theirs. To help, the International Trade Administration has a database at export.gov that suggests market opportunities for specific products. Next, zero in on the nations with the most potential and develop a strategic market entry. Entrepreneurs should decide how they want to sell, such as direct to the end user or through a distributor, and what each path would entail. Overall, this process is very similar to planning a regional or national expansion, except it also requires consideration of foreign regulations around food safety, packaging, labeling, licensure, taxes, etc. Entrepreneurs must also look at costs and logistics, and if working with a distributor, hammer out terms such as who covers freight, insurance, and loss. Clear documentation and good relationships are key. On the surface, this all might seem daunting to a small business owner. But there are plenty of resources to help, including SBDC and the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) and similar organizations in other states, as well as the U.S. Commercial Service and industry trade associations. Domestic resources such as these can then connect entrepreneurs to foreign-equivalent organizations.   With the right guidance, Chris says even very small companies can successfully go global—in some cases, even before they expand domestically. It all boils down to finding the white space and executing on the right opportunities—and budgeting time and money carefully, of course.   There's a lot more valuable info packed into this podcast, so definitely tune in!
