How do Genesis chapters 1:26-29 & 2 - affirm the work of the human? What does it mean for humans to "subdue the earth" and "have dominion" as part of their work? How should Christians balance work and rest in their lives? Dr. Sarah Maple is a distinguished theologian and painter with advanced degrees in Ethics, Comparative Religious Studies, and Theological Studies from Drew University and the Pontifical John Paul II Institute, and she completed her Ph.D. at the University of St. Andrews, with joint supervision from the University of Oxford. On his way to Rome to be martyred, Ignatius of Antioch urges the Christians there not to interfere with his impending fate: “Don't hinder me from living,” he wrote. “Let me attain the pure light; then I will be a human being.” Drawing on early Christian sources, especially the newly edited and translated volume, On the Human Image of God, by the fourth-century theologian St. Gregory of Nyssa, this workshop features John Behr, Natalie Carnes, and Thomas Breedlove exploring what it means for human beings to be made in the image of God. What does it look for human beings, as “images of the Image,” to be a work in progress—growing in Christ until we attain the “full measure of Christ.”The Very Rev. Dr. John Behr is Regius Professor of Humanity at the University of Aberdeen. He previously taught at St. Vladimir's Seminary, where he served as Dean from 2007-2017. He is a leading expert on the early church and has translated many seminal texts from the patristic era. His doctoral work focused on issues of asceticism and anthropology in St. Irenaeus of Lyons and Clement of Alexandria, and was published by Oxford University Press in 2000. Fr. John then began the publication of a series on the Formation of Christian Theology: The Way to Nicaea (SVS Press, 2001), and The Nicene Faith (SVS Press, 2003). Synthesizing these studies is the book The Mystery of Christ: Life in Death (SVS Press, 2003). Fr. John also edited and translated the fragments of Diodore of Tarsus and Theodore of Mopsuestia, setting them in their historical and theological context (OUP, 2011). Next, Fr. John published a more poetic and meditative work entitled Becoming Human: Theological Anthropology in Word and Image (SVS Press, 2013) and a full study of St. Irenaeus: St. Irenaeus of Lyons: Identifying Christianity (OUP, 2013). He then completed a new critical edition and translation of Origen's On First Principles, together with an extensive introduction (OUP, 2017), and John the Theologian and His Paschal Gospel: A Prologue to Theology (OUP, 2019). Most recently, he is the editor and translator of Gregory of Nyssa's On the Human Image of God (often titled, “On the Making of Humankind” or “De Hominis Opificio”) (OUP, 2023).Dr. Natalie Carnes is Professor of Theology at Baylor University. She holds a Ph.D. from Duke University, an M.A. in Religion from University of Chicago, and a B.A. from Harvard University in Comparative Religious Studies. A constructive theologian who reflects on traditional theological topics through somewhat less traditional themes, like images, iconoclasm, beauty, gender, and childhood, Natalie draws on literary and visual works as sites of theological reflection to explore questions of religious knowledge and authority. In addition to authoring articles in Modern Theology, Journal of Religion, and Scottish Journal of Theology, among other journals, she is the author of Beauty: A Theological Engagement with Gregory of Nyssa (Cascade, 2014), Image and Presence: A Christological Reflection on Iconoclasm and Iconophilia (Stanford University Press, 2017), and Motherhood: A Confession (Stanford University Press, 2020). For more information on events, blogposts, and other writings, you can visit her website: nataliecarnes.com.Dr. Thomas Breedlove is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Baylor University's Institute for Studies. He holds a Ph.D. in Theology from Baylor University, an M.Div. from Duke Divinity School, and a B.A. from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. His primary research topics include issues of human nature, embodiment, and divine image in the fourth-century theology of Gregory of Nyssa and contemporary French phenomenology. He has published on these topics and theology and the arts in Modern Theology, St. Vladimir's Theological Quarterly, Religion and Literature, Literature and Theology, Political Theology, Anglican Theological Review, Heythrop Journal, and a forthcoming volume on phenomenology and art with Bloomsbury Press.

Her first book "You Belong: A Call for Connection" is published by HarperOne. Main points discussed: The importance of belonging and cultural/genetic heritage. The positive, relatable tone of Sebene’s book, You Belong. Trusting the sacredness of life vs. clashing with reality. Surrendering to the mystery that’s beyond our logical comprehension. We are not separate, and we are not the same. Living the paradox of unity and diversity. The importance of integrating absolute and relative. There’s a delusion of separation at the heart of all political and social divisions. ‘Unlearning’ that delusion is where the spiritual path starts. Those who enjoyed embodied presence since childhood may be less effective in teaching others than those who needed to achieve it. Marginalized people often have a broader and more holistic perspective on the world. Healing “epistemicide” – colonialism’s destruction of ancient knowledge. Modern mindfulness practice sometimes dismisses the deeper dimensions of its ancient roots. Everything is sacred. Technology is not the enemy. Benefiting from the best of ancient and modern knowledge. The pandemic may be the first time in history where we are all experiencing the same situation globally. The importance of discernment on the spiritual path, particularly in this time of conspiracy theories, polarization, and pandemic. The importance of community and dangers of isolation. Increased interest in meditation and spirituality during the pandemic. The authenticity, clarity, love, and spirituality of the younger generation. A discussion of Catherine Ingram’s Facing Extinction article. The leverage of technologies of consciousness, including ritual and ceremony. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Remaining curious and open. Ground yourself, know yourself, connect to the moment. Seeing parts of ourselves we don’t like. Meeting whatever comes up with kindness and compassion. Any motivation for starting on the spiritual path is a ‘good’ one. Other reasons will follow. Contemplating the beauty and mystery of nature. “Love yourself” could be the motto for the whole book. Detailed discussion mindfulness and its historical origins. Sebene’s “Elements Practice”: earth, water, fire, air. The importance of intimacy and imagination. Helping heal kids with emotional trauma. Trauma-sensitive mindfulness. Taking care of one’s self so as to care for others more effectively An invitation for white people to learn more about other cultures and identities. For mature spiritual development, we need to illumine our blind spots. Website: sebeneselassie.com Discussion of this interview in the BatGap Community Facebook Group. Apocalyptic Violence: The Desire for Universal Destruction and Its Historical Origins

Matthias Riedl is an associate professor of history and holds the privately supported Chair of Comparative Religious Studies at Central European University (Budapest, Hungary). Before coming to CEU Budapest, he taught at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany, and Duke University. His research interest is the comparative history of religion, with a focus on the relation of religion and politics. Lecture Details: The analytical category of "apocalyptic violence" has been frequently applied in recent studies of terrorism, sectarian violence, and revolutionary action. As the psychologist Robert J. Lifton put it: "Apocalyptic violence denotes the readiness to cause enormous destruction in the service of spiritual purification. A world must cease to exist in order to make space for a better one." However, as Riedl will discuss, the category is by no means self-explanatory, since apocalyptic literature is traditionally deterministic and dissuades the readers from taking action. A historical overview will demonstrate that revolutionary and violent forms of apocalypticism emerge only in early modernity, when mystical and humanist influences undermine the determinist creed. Riedl therefore argues that apocalyptic violence, despite its references to an ancient symbolic tradition, is a decidedly modern phenomenon.
