When Dr. Seuss wrote his book The Lorax, a story about a creature who works to save trees from the destruction of a businessman known as the Once-ler, he probably didn't think it would come up during the Virginia General Assembly. But it did, with Sen. Danica Roem, D-Manassas, moving to pass a bill dealing with tree conservation and replacement “on behalf of the Lorax” earlier this year. That legislation, from Del. Patrick Hope, D-Arlington, is one of three proposals awaiting a signature from Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin that aim to expand the powers local governments have to preserve their...Article LinkSupport the show

Leaning Right and Turning Left with Sadler and the Senator

The boys had to hold this explosive episode for a week but its finally here, where Sadler and the Senator explore the national making headlines story of the exchange between the President of the Senate, Winsome Earle-Sears and Senator Danica Roem, the first transgender politician elected in the Virginia Senate, where, according to the press, Madam President Sears called her "sir" when answering a question posed by the Senator. Listen as they break down exactly what happened, and get the exclusive inside story on what happened on the Senate floor both during and after the exchange, and why when the press and Democrats tried to make a huge issue out of it in the days after, such an attempt fell flat. Then in the second segment, Hermie and Bill breakdown another significant incident involving the Skill Game nemesis, Del. Barry Knight, as he tried to bring legislation in an attempt to circumvent a pending court case to help homeowners in Virginia Beach who live on a defunct golf course. And, if you have been following this podcast, you know that he pulled the same stunt in order to shut down Hermie's lawsuit and injunction that helped small businesses, convenience stores restaurants and truck stops to be able to participate in the emerging gaming market dominated by the casinos, and the political interests that seem to want to protect them over Virginia small business owners. They go to the videotape to show what happened in the committee, and whether the "Knight Rider" was successful, or not. This is a can't miss episode...I know we say that every time, but this time we mean it! Our Robot Overlord is the special guest star copywriter this week!  The following is an AI generated recap and it makes us sound much smarter than we are! Welcome to another riveting episode of Apologies Accepted, as your hosts Theo and Juliette explore the complexities of gender and sex. Discover how these elemental aspects of identity are more than binary concepts, through an enlightening discussion on chromosomal variables, sex changes in nature, and the potential future of the Y chromosome. Shift gears with us as we shed light on a recent event involving Virginia Democratic State Senator, Danica Roem, a transgender woman misgendered in a public assembly by Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earl Sears. Roem's response and Sears's reluctant apology serves as an apt backdrop for examining the issue of insensitivity and bigotry in public offices. We offer a detailed breakdown of Sears's apology, analyzing its shortcomings and appraising it according to our stringent apology assessment criteria. Explore the concept of public remorse with us as we critique the absence of sincere regret, proper explanation, accountability acceptance, authentic repentance, the omission of a repair offer, and a request for forgiveness in Sears's apology. Lastly, tune in as we anticipate upcoming public apologies from the Department of Education, the state of Tennessee, and the San Francisco Department of Public Health. This episode presents a critical discourse on vital societal concerns ranging from gender diversity to political accountability.

Gaslit Nation

Gaslit Nation launched in 2018 to help build the Blue Wave, which set up progressive infrastructure that expands today, including in states like Kansas. In Virginia in 2023, our community produced one of the largest phone banks for Sister District, helping to get out the vote, flipping the Senate, and helping elect Danica Roem, the first transgender person to serve in the state Senate. We also protected abortion rights from Posh Trump Glenn Youngkin. An early September 2023 Gaslit Nation episode highlighted the work of the States Project, which raised more money for Virginia than the Democratic Party. Why? Because grassroots power is the most reliable power we have left. We are the answer to the decades-long mission of the corporate-backed far-right to dismantle our democracy. No one is coming to save us but us. That's why our listeners are the least likely to be demoralized by the news that the Supreme Court will drag out Trump's January 6 insurrection case, the one Merrick Garland's DOJ already waited out the clock on, losing valuable time as the coup plotters like Trump and Bannon continue to mobilize their genocidal far-right army. Ivanka and Jared dine with politicians from both parties and continue to serve as anonymous sources for the media that, in return, tries to rehabilitate their (banana republic grifter) reputations. This week's bonus show, answering questions from our listeners, features a special focus on the murder of Nex Benedict, a gender-fluid trans teen killed by the incitement of hate and violence driven by Chaya Raichik of Libs of TikTok and Oklahoma state school superintendent Ryan Walters, who appointed Raichik to terrorize vulnerable children and their allies. While the grief and anger over the lack of accountability are immense, there are solutions to what we can do, no matter if we live in a Republican-hostage state or a so-called blue state. Other questions from our listeners range from the latest news on the Havana Syndrome mystery and cover-up, must-see places to visit in New York, and whether George Santos will end up on Dancing with the Stars (he will!), and more. If you didn't hear your question answered this week, look out for it next week, as our Q&A continues. Thank you to everyone who supports the show – we could not make Gaslit Nation without you! Why Socialism and Trans Liberation Need Each Other (w/ Shon Faye)

Shon Faye is the author of the book The Transgender Issue: Trans Justice is Justice For All, available from Verso. The title of the book is meant slightly ironically, because part of Faye's argument is directed against talking about a "transgender issue" in the first place. Faye's book is a manifesto for a specifically socialist form of trans liberation, which she contrasts with the politics of liberal inclusion, which is often "inclusion within deeply unequal at best and at worse quite oppressive systems." Faye argues that the things that make trans people's lives difficult (lack of housing and healthcare, incarceration) often oppress others as well and that we do not just need representation/diversity at the top but a caring society in which everyone has what they need. Faye prefers the language of "liberation" over "rights" and "equality" (though rights and equality are important), and argues that "the liberation of trans people would benefit the lives of everyone in our society." In this conversation, we discuss Faye's ideas as well as the difference between US and UK feminism's approaches to trans issues, how the right has tried to push a moral panic around one of the most marginalized groups of people, and what it really means to live in a "cisnormative society." We also discuss the British tabloid press, the BBC, the limits of debate, and "the Harry Potter Lady." “You tell people at JP Morgan to put ‘nonbinary' on the job application form. Sure, that's great. Who is applying for jobs at JP Morgan? College graduates who are white, middle-class, rich. This idea of liberal trans inclusion favors a certain kind of trans person on the grounds of class, ethnicity, citizenship. So for me it's not a liberation movement if it's only including really small echelons of an already-tiny community.” — Shon FayeThe Current Affairs article "Inclusion in the Atrocious" offers further discussion of the point about inclusion within inherently unjust institutions. We also have articles about both Matt Walsh and the "Harry Potter Lady." The U.S. politicians Shon mentions are Sarah McBride and Danica Roem. The internal clash in the Guardian can be seen here.

My guest today, Danica Roem, went from fronting a Death Metal band by night while building a career as an accomplished journalist by day, to being the first person to be elected and serve in any U.S. state legislature while openly transgender. When you hear that story, you might think, “wow, that's amazing, but I don't really relate.” Not so fast. When you zoom the lens out, Danica's story is really about the quest to live as the truest expression of yourself, to not stifle or deny who you are, and to find a sense of home for all parts of you within a community. Which is something nearly all of us often struggle with. I know I do. This is why I was so excited to be in conversation with Danica Roem. My chat with Danica takes us back to her teenage years, where she first found her community in (what may sound surprising now, but won't later) metal music. We talk about the struggles of masking the authentic parts of yourself in order to fit in, and how she's been able to use her experiences to relate with people from all different backgrounds on a human level. Danica's new memoir-meets-manifesto, Burn the Page: A True Story of Torching Doubts, Blazing Trails, and Igniting Change, deconstructs the many, sometimes outrageous and deeply isolating and offensive stories her doubters and opponents have thrown at her and shows through brutal honesty how she's turned her identity, values and experiences into her greatest strengths. She brings that same honesty and authenticity to our conversation today, so know that you're in for a real treat. Del. Danica Roem (D) talked to Virginia Scope for an audio interview Monday morning to talk about her newly-announced campaign for the Virginia state Senate. She is seeking the nomination in SD-30, an open district with no incumbent due to redistricting. Roem is the first Democrat to announce their intention for the nomination in this district. Ian Lovejoy, a former member of the Manassas city council, has already announced his intention to seek the Republican nomination.“I'm pursuing the Democratic nomination to continue my work of serving the people of my lifelong home community of western Prince William County and greater Manassas by building on my record of passing 32 bills into law during my 2.5 terms representing the 13th District of the Virginia House of Delegates, including 10 to feed hungry kids,” Roem said on Facebook Monday. As for the possibility that a lawsuit might force the House to run again under new lines this year, Roem says she would run for that seat first. “If a federal court rules for one-year special elections for the House of Delegates in 2022, then I will run for re-election to the House this fall in order to continue serving my constituents and maintaining my seniority, which is transferable to the state Senate.”She is running for the state Senate in 2023, either way.

But before Danica made history, she had to change her vision of what was possible in her own life. Doing so was a matter of storytelling: during her campaign, Danica hired an opposition researcher to dredge up every story from her past that her opponent might seize on to paint her negatively. In wildly entertaining prose, Danica dismantles all the stories her opponents tried to hedge against her, showing how through brutal honesty and loving authenticity, it's possible to embrace the low points, and even transform them into her greatest strengths. Burn the Page takes readers from Danica's lonely, closeted, and at times operatically tragic childhood to her position as a rising star in a party she's helped forever change. Burn the Page is so much more than a stump speech: it's an extremely inspiring manifesto about how it's possible to set fire to the stories you don't want to be in anymore, whether written by you or about you by someone else--and rewrite your own future, whether that's running for politics, in your work, or your personal life. This book will not just encourage people who think they have to be spotless to run for office, but inspire all of us to own our personal narratives as Danica does. I took the day off yesterday, not to rest up or have fun, but to fight with my health insurance extortionists. For as long as I can remember, I've called our for-profit system of heath noncare "government-sanctioned extortion," because that's the best description of this predatory system. Yesterday, I found out that due to a few elements aligning in just the right way, I'm no longer eligible for the help from the pharmaceutical company that manufactures the more obscenely expensive prescription drug I take nightly that allows me minor relief from the RLS that prevents me from sleeping! So, instead of paying $10 a month (which I've been paying for the past few years), that same prescription will now cost between $700 and $850 or so each month. That's simply money I do not have (and if I did, would go to other expenses currently not being met, certainly not to a price gouging pharmaceutical company!). Anyway, that the Dems have done nothing to fix this pharmaceutical price gouging, the practice continues out of control. But that's not even the nightmare I alluded to at the top of this missive. No, that would be the essay published earlier this week by CNN, written by a very conservative judge who was appointed to the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals 15 years ago by GW Bush, Michael Luttig. In no uncertain terms, he lays out the ultimate game his party is playing, "The Republican blueprint to steal the 2024 election." I'm afraid that Democrats are blind to what's happening right under their eyes, and that we're in serious trouble. So I'll read that commentary at the top of the show. At the bottom of the hour we'll switch tracks, and talk with a woman who knows that ANYTHING is possible! Danica Roem is a delegate in the Virginia House of Delegates.... who, before she made history, described herself as a "trans woman and first-time candidate in a district represented by a Republican for 25 years"... Roem has now held that seat for three terms, making history as the first openly transgender individual serving in any legislature in the country. Her book, released this week, is titled, "Burn the Page: A True Story of Torching Doubts, Blazing Trails and Igniting Change"

Danica Roem made national headlines when –as a transgender former frontwoman for a metal band and a political newcomer—she unseated Virginia's most notoriously anti-LGBTQ 26-year incumbent Bob Marshall as state delegate. Danica is the nation's first openly trans person elected to US state legislature. Her new book: "Burn the Page: A True Story of Torching Doubts, Blazing Trails, and Igniting Change" is her memoir-meets-manifesto. The book takes readers from Danica's lonely and closeted childhood to her position as a rising star in a party she's helped forever change.
