HAPPY HOUR FLIX is a podcast all about the movies you love.  A nostalgic look at what we grew up watching and how they still impact us today.Hop aboard the steel train as hosts Steven Pierce and Matt Mundy journey back to the film set of the unforgettable "Steel Magnolias." With actor Tom Hodges as our guide, we peel back the curtain to reveal the camaraderie, challenges, and triumphs  that made filming this dialogue-rich movie an unforgettable experience. We'll explore the intricacies of working with Robert Harling as well as the genius behind the script, and challenges of bringing this much-loved storyline from stage to screen. But first, at the behest of the film's star-studded and influential (not mention beloved) actresses, Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton, Olympia Dukakis, Sally Field, Darryl Hannah, Shirley MacClaine, we take a happy hour break with our friends over at MISGUIDED SPIRITS, for a delightful concoction by Max Stampa-Brown,  Food & Beverage Director for The Garret Group, which operates a number of awesome bars and restaurants in NYC.  His out of this world "Planet Rogen" today was made over at Rocco's on 1 w. 3rd st, NYCFollow along and be sure to make one yourself!“The Easter egg hunt”1oz lemon juice.5oz ginger syrup .5oz honey syrup2oz MISGUIDED whiskey1 egg white Dry shake, then wet shake (first without ice then with ice to emulsify the egg white) double strain into a large coupe. Digitized, remastered and edited in May, 2023. Robert Anton Wilson had a remarkable career. Starting as a writer of comic science fiction based on historical stories of conspiracy, his work soon turned in the direction of physics, psychology, and futurism, and described himself as an agnostic mystic. In the religion or philosophy known as discordianism, he is considered both pope and saint. A journalist in his early career, he co-edited the Playboy Magazine forum, and covered the work of both Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert, later known as Ram Dass. Most of his best known works were written in the 1970s and 1980s, though he continued to write non-fiction into the 21st century. These include The Illuminati Trilogy, co-written with Robert Shea, The Schrodinger's Cat and Cosmic Trigger trilogies, and Prometheus Rising. His early works were published by large commercial presses; his later by small presses. Most, of not all, of his books still remain in print. The three books mentioned toward the end of the interview were all published and are all available. She was also a playwright, short story writer, television writer and non-fiction author. Richard A. Lupoff and Richard Wolinsky interviewed her twice in the KPFA studios. This second interview was recorded on January 21, 1992 while she was on tour for two novels, Darcy's Utopia and Life Force Fay Weldon's career continued for the next thirty years after the interview with several novels, including a sequel to She-Devil, more plays, more short stories and several works of non-fiction. This interview was digitized, remastered, and edited in June, 2023 by Richard Wolinsky. First time on the air in over thirty years. Complete 34-minute Interview. Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues   Bookwaves Philip K. Dick (1928-1982) Excerpts from various sources, including KPFA, of Philip K. Dick discussing his career, his books, and his life, originally created as a memorial program by Richard Wollnsky, Richard A. Lupoff and Lawrence Davidson in the spring of 1982. Hosted by Richard Wolinsky. When science fiction writer Philip K. Dick died of a stroke on March 2, 1982 at the age of 53, most of the literary world shrugged and the entertainment world barely took notice. The film Blade Runner, based on his novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, was still a few months from its release. Today, IMDb lists nearly fifty adaptations for film, TV and other media, which includes twelve feature films and a handful of television series, from Total Recall to A Scanner Darkly to Minority Report to The Man in the High Castle and Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams. The science fiction world, though, knew it had lost one of the all time greats. Between the time the KPFA show Probabilities started in the February of 1977 until Phil Dick's death five years later, Dick Lupoff, Lawrence Davidson, and Richard Wolinsky never did get a chance to fully interview him for the program, though over the years they'd collected several excerpts to use in a two-part memorial program  which was aired some time in the spring of 1982. The show consisted of commentary and explanations from all three of us interspersed with these excerpts. As is pointed out a couple of times in the program, the sound quality of the excerpts is very uneven, and even with digital tweaking, some of it may be unintelligible.  This is the two-part show that originally aired, minus a few musical segments along with an outro from part one, and intro and outro from part two. The program was never rebroadcast, and the cassette sat in a closet for the next forty years, until it was digitized, remastered and edited in 2023.   Bookwaves Alan Furst, historical spy novelist, discussing his career,  in a short excerpt from an interview recorded in 2014 while he was on tour for Midnight in Europe. RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey is joined again by Vidar Hjardeng MBE, Inclusion and Diversity Consultant for ITV News across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands for the next in his regular Connect Radio theatre reviews. This week Vidar was reviewing a story of tenderness and heart, portraying the resilience of the bonds of womanhood and sisterhood in one small Louisiana town with the audio described performance of Steel Magnolias at the Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham on Wednesday 22 March at 7.30pm with description by professional Audio Describer Theo Hornsby-Walsh. The heartwarming, deeply moving comedy-drama Steel Magnolias takes to the road in 2023 in an adaptation from the film's writer, Robert Harling and a tribute to his late sister. Steel Magnolias charts the lives of six small-town women through times of great hardship, great joy and the messy bits in between, the play balances Harling's trademark witty dialogue with moments of despair for a profound portrait of the human condition. Set in the Chinquapin salon, Louisiana, the play chronicles salon owner Truvy Jone's interactions with her regulars and friends. Their lighthearted conversations and true friendship, go a long way in helping them cope with the difficulties of life. Follow the trials and tribulations of six fierce and sassy women as they set the world to rights in their small-town bustling beauty salon. Unwind with a fabulous cast, including Laura Main (Call the Midwife), Lucy Speed (The Archers, The Bill), Harriet Thorpe (Absolutely Fabulous, The Brittas Empire), and Diana Vickers (The X-Factor, Dial M For Murder, The Rise and Fall of Little Voice) as they set up shop in this raucous classic, comedy masterpiece.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: The Estimation Game: a monthly Fermi estimation web app, published by Sage on February 20, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Announcing the first monthly Estimation Game! Answer 10 Fermi estimation questions, like “How many piano tuners are there in New York?” Train your estimation skills and get more comfortable putting numbers on things Team up with friends, or play solo See how your scores compare on the global leaderboard The game is around 10-40 minutes, depending on how much you want to discuss and reflect on your estimates You can play The Estimation Game on Quantified Intuitions, solo, or with friends. The February game is live for one week (until Sunday 26th). We'll release a new Estimation Game each month. Lots of people tell us they'd like to get more practice doing BOTECs and estimating, but they don't get around to it. So we've designed The Estimation Game to give you the impetus to do a bit of estimation each month in a fun context. You might use this as a sandbox to experiment with different methods of estimating. You could decompose the question into easier-to-estimate quantities - make estimates in your head, discuss with friends, use a bit of paper, or even build a scrappy Guesstimate or Squiggle model. We'd appreciate your feedback in the comments, in our Discord, or at adam@sage-future.org. We'd love to have suggestions for questions for future rounds of The Estimation Game - this will help us keep the game varied and fun in future months! Info for organisers If you run a community group or meetup, we've designed the Estimation Game to be super easy to run as an off-the-shelf event. Check out our info for organisers page for resources and FAQs. If you're running a large-scale event and want to run a custom Estimation Game at it, let us know and we can help you set it up. We're planning to pilot custom Estimation Games at EAGx Nordics (and maybe EAGx Cambridge). About Quantified Intuitions We built Quantified Intuitions as an epistemics training site. See our previous post for more on our motivation. Alongside the monthly Estimation Game, we've made two permanent tools: Pastcasting: Predict past events to rapidly practise forecasting Calibration: Answer EA-themed trivia questions to calibrate your uncertainty Thanks to our test groups in London, to community builders who gave feedback, in particular Robert Harling, Adash Herrenschmidt-Moller, and Sam Robinson, and to Chana Messinger at CEA for the idea and feedback throughout. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Getting on a different train: can Effective Altruism avoid collapsing into absurdity?, published by Peter McLaughlin on October 7, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Thank you to Sam Atis, Robert Harling, Guive Assadi, Pranay Mittal, and Francis Priestland for comments on earlier drafts. The research for this post was supported by a grant from the FTX Future Fund Regranting Program. The train to crazy town Introduction Sam Atis, following on from some arguments by Scott Alexander, writes of ‘the train to Crazy Town'. As Sam presents it, there are a series of escalating challenges to utilitarian-style (and more broadly consequentialist-style) reasoning, leading further and further into absurdity. Sam himself bites the bullet on some classic cases, like the transplant problem and the repugnant conclusion, but is put off by some more difficult examples: Thomas Hurka's St Petersburg Paradox: Suppose you are offered a deal—you can press a button that has a 51% chance of creating a new world and doubling the total amount of utility, but a 49% chance of destroying the world and all utility in existence. If you want to maximise total expected utility, you ought to press the button—pressing the button has positive expected value. But the problem comes when you are asked whether you want to press the button again and again and again—at each point, the person trying to maximise expected utility ought to agree to press the button, but of course, eventually they will destroy everything. The Very Repugnant Conclusion: Once [utilitarians] assign some positive value, however small, to the creation of each person who has a weak preference for leading her life rather than no life, then how can they stop short of saying that some large number of such lives can compensate for the creation of lots of dreadful lives, lives in pain and torture that nobody would want to live? Most people, like Sam, try to get off the train before they reach the end of the line, trying to preserve some but not all of utilitarianism. And so the question is: how far are you willing to go? As a list of challenges to utilitarianism, I think Sam's post is lacking: he is very focussed on specific thought experiments, ignoring more theoretical objections that in my view are much more insightful. But as a provocation—how far will you go in your utilitarianism?—I think it's an extraordinarily useful post. Sam takes it upon himself to pose the following question: ‘what are the principles by which we should decide when to get off the train?' But something worries me about Sam's presentation. Who said you could actually get off the train to crazy town? Each additional challenge to utilitarian logic—each stop on the route—does not seem to assume any new premises: every problem is generated by the same basic starting point of impartially weighing up all people's experiences and preferences against each other. As such, there just might not be any principles you can use to justify biting this bullet but not that bullet—doing so might even be logically incoherent. Sam says that he does want to get off the train eventually, but it's not clear how he would do that. Alexander's original post suggests something closer to this view. He explains why he dislikes the Repugnant Conclusion and various other situations in which ‘longtermist'-style consequentialism goes awry, and then lays out the position he would take to avoid these conclusions ‘[i]f I had to play the philosophy game'. But, he writes, ‘I'm not sure I want to play the philosophy game.' He's not confident that his own partial theoretical compromise actually will avoid the absurdity (and rightly so), and he cares more about avoiding absurdity than he does about getting on the train. Mainstream commentators from outside Effective Altruism have made this point too. Step...

It's time for another visit with Midday theater critic J. Wynn Rousuck, who joins Tom today with her review of Steel Magnolias, Robert Harling's popular 1987 play that's getting a notably live production at Baltimore's Everyman Theatre— the company's first live on-stage presentation since the pandemic forced theaters to close in March 2020.** The play, directed at Everyman by Casey Stangl, centers on six southern women and the friendship they enjoy while gathered at their beauty parlor over a three-year period. The play received a Drama Desk Award nomination, and a film adaptation was nominated for an Academy Award and two Golden Globes. The Everyman production features Resident Company Actors Megan Anderson as Truvy, Helen Hedman as Ouiser, Beth Hylton as M'Lynn and Katie Kleiger as Shelby. Rounding out the cast are Heather Gibson as Annelle and Nancy Robinette as Clairee. Steel Magnolias continues on stage at Baltimore's Everyman Theatre until September 5. The play will also be streamed for ticketed patrons from August 27 to September 19. Follow the links above for more info.* *Everyman is requiring all patrons to present proof of COVID-19 vaccination along with a photo ID to enter the theater. Also, all patrons entering the theater are required to wear a mask (except when eating or drinking in the cafe area or upstairs on the mezzanine level at the high top tables). All theater staff and crew have been vaccinated. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ON YOUR FAVORITE PODCATCHER CONTENT WARNING: Diabetes, divorce, small town gossip, grief, loss, death of loved ones. Jordan aka The Lady Dame joins us for a truly outstanding finale to this series, probably the single most “80's Ladies” movie out of all the ones we've watched. After all, it stars 3 of the ladies we've already talked about, two we've talked about in other iconic 80's roles, and one who is surely one of the greatest actresses of her generation. We've seen this before, though - just because the star power is good, it doesn't mean the story can hold up. So thank Ouiser for Robert Harling's play and script, because he channeled a terribly tragic story into the absolute epitome of tragicomedy. This script is just about perfect, and the cast is perfectly balanced; even a (justifiably) grumpy and miserable Herbert Ross still brought a level of care and detail to this film that only helped it. So prepare yourselves, especially for the single most emotional trivia segment we've ever had on this show. We're finishing up our 80's Ladies series with Steel Magnolias this week on Macintosh & Maud Haven't Seen What?! Robert Harling's play, Steel Magnolias, was turned into a feature film in 1989, which has had such a huge influence on me over the past 30+ years. I apologize in advance for my terrible Louisiana accent, but I had SO much fun recording this episode and reading this wonderful play and I hope you enjoy it.   Book Vs Movie Steel Magnolias The 1987 Play Vs The 1989 Classic Film The Margos are making sure Shelby drinks her juice and that Drum doesn’t shoot Oiuser in this special episode talking about a play to movie adaptation from the 80s. Based on a true story about his sister’s death at a young age after giving birth, Robert Harling’s Steel Magnolias is the smart, funny tale of strong women who are underestimated by the men in their lives.  The play, which opened Off-Broadway in 1987, is notable for having one setting (Truvy’s beauty parlor in Northern Louisiana) and an all-female cast. The lines are so witty and sharp, audiences embraced it very quickly.  Soon Hollywood came calling, and now we have one of the ultimate “chick flicks” of all time which came out in 1989 and stars the soon-to-be-famous Julia Roberts as well as a huge cast of amazing actors. (This is truly an ensemble piece.)  This is one of the most quotable films of the last 30 years and we have a ball dissecting the differences between the play and film.   In this ep the Margos discuss: The story of Robert Harling’s sister Susan Harling Robinson The main themes of both play and film  Biggest changes between the original work and adaptation The cast including Roberts, Dolly Parton (Truvy,) Sally Filed (M’Lynn,) Shirley MacLaine (Ouiser,) Daryl Hannah (Annelle,) Olympia Dukakis (Clairee,) Tom Skerrit (Drum,) Sam Shepard (Spud,) Dylan McDermott (Jackson,) Kevin J. The unique bonds of female friendship are at the heart of Robert Harling’s Steel Magnolias, now in the middle of its run at Santa Rosa’s 6th Street Playhouse. Based on the life of Harling’s sister, the show debuted off-Broadway in 1987 and shortly thereafter was adapted into the successful film starring Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine and Julia Roberts in an early Academy Award-nominated role. Set in a Louisiana hair salon, it’s the tale of a group of small-town Southern “belles” of all ages and statuses who gather to gossip, share recipes, and occasionally get their hair done. There’s Truvy (Jennifer Peck), the bubbly proprietor and chief conduit of all local information, Annelle (Crystal Carpenter Wilson), the new girl in town who hires on at the salon as the show begins, Shelby (Ellen Rawley), an independent young woman about to be married, M’Lynn (Jill K. Wagoner), Shelby’s lovingly-controlling mother, Ouiser (mollie boice), the town “character”, and Clairee (Kate Brickley), widow of the mayor and town sage. The play opens on Shelby’s wedding day and progresses through the next couple of years. We see changes in all of their lives, from Shelby’s desire for a family to Annelle’s maturation from an insecure lost lamb to true believer. M’Lynn struggles with letting her daughter live her own life, while Ousier, who really isn’t crazy (she’s “just been in a very bad mood for 40 years”), reconnects with an old flame. Clairee starts to step out of her late husband’s shadow and expand her horizons. It’s a tear-jerker, so someone’s gonna get sick and… well, you know. Director Beulah Vega’s got a top-notch cast at work here with each actor providing a fully-formed character that while steeped in cliché is wholly believable. Kate Brickley’s Clairee is the heart of the show, overseeing things from a waiting chair and tossing out a quip every now and then. She’s the town mother, which is not meant to take anything away from Jill Wagoner’s M’Lynn, who is excellent as Shelby’s mother, torn between her daughter’s desire to be happy and what may be truly best for her. mollie boice follows up her role from earlier this year as a cantankerous Southern senior in Spreckel’s The Sugar Bean Sisters with her work here as a cantankerous Southern senior. Madame boice would seem to have a lock on this type of role and delivers the goods. If Clairee is the heart of the show, then surely Ellen Rawley’s Shelby is the soul. To steal a line from another show currently running, she’s always looking on the bright side of life and Rawley is charming in the role. Crystal Carpenter Wilson’s Annelle has the greatest character arc and by the play’s conclusion has come into her own as a strong woman. The glue that holds this group together is Jennifer Peck’s Truvy. Her beauty shop is their refuge and Peck plays her with a heart of gold and a great deal of humor. The affection she holds for others and that others hold for her really comes through. That beauty shop is well represented on the GK Hardt stage with a nicely appointed scenic design by Sam Transleau. Props for making it a functional shop, where hair is actually shampooed (not mimed) and props to the cast for taking on the challenge of setting curlers while performing. Set in the 80’s, the time is well represented in the costume choices of designer Gail Reine. Full of humor, pathos and delivered via excellent character work by the entire cast, the 6th Street Playhouse production of Steel Magnolias delivers a heaping helping of southern comfort to its audience, and not just a female audience. Consider making an appointment. Steel Magnolias plays at Santa Rosa’s 6th Street Playhouse through November 5 with evening performances at 7:30pm and matinees at 2pm.
