As we move into Ordinary Time, this Sunday in Ireland we have the beautiful feast of Corpus Christi. So on this week's programme, we bring out a reflection from our old colleague Lorraine Buckley who shares with us some thoughts on the Solemnity of Corpus Christi originally in 2019. In part one, we have our regular run through the liturgical odds and ends including the Pope's Prayer Intention for June 2026 and the saints for the week.In part two, Lorraine's reflection on Corpus Christi begins by taking us through a history of the feast which owes its existence to Blessed Juliana of Liege, who began devotion to the Blessed Sacrament in around 1230. Largely through her insistence, in 1264 Pope Urban IV commanded its observance by the universal church. While the Church celebrates the Institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper on Holy Thursday because it falls within the solemn and reflective time of the Easter Triduum, Juliana wanted to encourage a joyful celebration of this great gift of our Divine Master to the Church and to the world.  The Feast sums up three important confessions about our Faith. First is that God became physically present in the person of Christ, True God and True Man. Secondly, God continues to be present in His people as they form the Mystical Body of Christ in his church. And thirdly, the presence of God under the form of bread and wine is made available to us on the altar at Mass and preserved there for our nourishment and worship. Lorraine also reflects on why the Real Presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is so important to us through the Eucharistic hymns of the Tantum Ergo, Ave Verum Corpus, and Godhead Here in Hiding (Adoro Te Devote). In part three we have our weekly reflection on the Sunday Gospel which is from John's discourse on the Bread of Life (John 6:51-58).Local Notices Dates5th - 13th June - Kilmallock Parish Novena to Our Mother of Perpetual Help10th - 12th June - Triduum to the Sacred Heart of Jesus at Robertstown Church in St Senan's Parish on N69.19th - 27th June - Limerick's Solemn Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help at the Redemptorist Church in Limerick city11th July - Limerick Diocesan Pilgrimage to Knock24th - 29th October - Limerick Youth Pilgrimage to Assis and RomeText us at +353 874668950 or email at comeandseeinspirtaions@gmail.com

Welcome to Day 2842 of Wisdom-Trek. Thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom. Day 2842 – Wisdom Nuggets – Psalm 119:129-136 – Daily Wisdom Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2842 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2842 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. The Title for Today's Wisdom-Trek is: The Pe of Revelation – Panting for the Light In our previous episode on this grand expedition, we climbed through the sixteenth stanza of Psalm One Hundred Nineteen, the “Ayin” section. We stood on the high walls of our exile, our eyes burning, blurring, and straining, as we searched the horizon for the cosmic justice of Yahweh. We learned how to petition the Divine Council, boldly asking the Creator to step in as our Guarantor against the arrogant, rebel forces of this world. We declared that despite our profound exhaustion, we value the eternal, life-giving instructions of God infinitely more than the finest gold the world has to offer. Today, we take a deep breath, and we step forward into the seventeenth stanza of this magnificent, alphabetical mountain. We are exploring the “Pe” section, covering Psalm One Hundred Nineteen, verses one hundred twenty-nine through one hundred thirty-six, in the New Living Translation. In the ancient Hebrew alphabet, the letter “Pe,” or “Peh,” was originally depicted as an open mouth. It is the letter that represents speech, breath, revelation, and the act of opening a doorway. As we will see, this imagery is brilliantly woven throughout this entire stanza. The psalmist is going to talk about the opening of God's Word, the panting of his own mouth in desperate thirst, and the radiant, smiling face of the Creator. He moves from the exhausting vigil of the previous stanza, into a place of awe, desperate petition, and ultimately, a profound, weeping lament over the brokenness of the world. Let us step onto the trail, open our hearts, and drink deeply from the truth. The first segment is: The Supernatural Wonders and the Open Door Psalm One Hundred Nineteen: verses one hundred twenty-nine and one hundred thirty. Your laws are wonderful. No wonder I obey them! The teaching of your word gives light, so even the simple can understand. The stanza begins with a breathless declaration of awe. “Your laws are wonderful.” The Hebrew word used here is pele, which carries a much heavier weight than our modern English word “wonderful.” It means a miracle, a marvel, or something that is undeniably supernatural. The psalmist is looking at the Torah, the cosmic blueprint of Yahweh, and he realizes that it is not merely a dry, ancient civic code. It is a supernatural revelation. It contains the very architecture of the universe, drafted by the Maker of the heavens and the earth. Because he recognizes the divine, miraculous origin of these instructions, his reaction is entirely logical: “No wonder I obey them!” Or, literally, “Therefore my soul keeps them.” When you recognize that the instructions you hold in your hands are a direct transmission from the Supreme Commander of the Divine Council, obedience is no longer a burden; it is the only rational response. He then explains exactly how this supernatural word operates in verse one hundred thirty. “The teaching of your word gives light, so even the simple can understand.” Other translations say, “The unfolding of your words gives light.” Here, we see the concept of the Hebrew letter “Pe.” The unfolding is an opening, like the opening of a doorway in a dark room. When the doorway of God's Word is opened, brilliant, illuminating light spills out into the darkness of human ignorance. Notice who benefits from this light: “even the simple can understand.” In the ancient Near Eastern pagan cultures, religious knowledge was entirely esoteric. The rebel gods, and their corrupt, earthly priests, hoarded their supposed wisdom. You had to be an elite insider, a wealthy prince, or a trained magician to access their dark secrets. But the God of Israel operates with radical, beautiful transparency. Yahweh opens the door of His truth for the “simple”—the open-minded, the humble, and the vulnerable. You do not need an advanced degree to understand the path of life. You simply need a humble heart, and a willingness to step into the light of the Creator's open door. The second segment is: The Panting Mouth and the Plea for Covenant Mercy Psalm One Hundred Nineteen: verses one hundred thirty-one and one hundred thirty-two. I pant with expectation, longing for your commands. Come and show me your mercy, as you do for all who love your name. The imagery of the open mouth reaches its absolute peak in verse one hundred thirty-one. “I pant with expectation, longing for your commands.” Literally, the Hebrew text says, “I opened my mouth and panted.” The psalmist compares himself to an exhausted, dehydrated animal in the scorching desert heat, opening its mouth wide, desperately gasping for air, and panting for a drop of water. This is an incredibly visceral, physical description of spiritual hunger. In the previous stanzas, he told us how the arrogant and the wicked were hunting him, digging pits, and laying traps. The chase has left him completely winded. But notice what he is panting for. He is not just panting for an escape from his enemies; he is panting for the commands of God. He craves the sustaining, life-giving oxygen of the Torah. He knows that without the steady intake of God's cosmic truth, his spirit will asphyxiate in the toxic, chaotic atmosphere of the rebel world. With his mouth wide open in desperate expectation, he makes a bold, historically grounded petition. “Come and show me your mercy, as you do for all who love your name.” Other versions translate this as, “Turn to me and be gracious to me.” He is asking Yahweh to pivot, to face him directly, and to intervene. He bases this request on legal, covenantal precedent. He essentially says, “Lord, look at Your historical track record. Look at how You have consistently dealt with every single person who loves Your Name. You have always provided grace. You have always shown mercy. I love Your Name, so please, apply that same, unbending rule of grace to my current situation.” To “love His name” is to love His reputation, His character, and His supreme, unrivaled authority over the spiritual realm. The psalmist wants the mercy of God, precisely so that the Name of God will be vindicated in the eyes of his enemies. The third segment is: Guided Steps and the Defeat of the Oppressor Psalm One Hundred Nineteen: verses one hundred thirty-three and one hundred thirty-four. Guide my steps by your word, so I will not be overcome by evil. Rescue me from the oppression of evil people; then I can obey your commandments. While he pants for spiritual oxygen, he asks for highly specific, practical guidance. “Guide my steps by your word, so I will not be overcome by evil.” Literally, the text reads, “Establish my footsteps in Your word, and let no iniquity have dominion over me.” The word for “dominion” is crucial here. In the biblical worldview, sin and evil are not just bad habits or ethical mistakes; they are predatory forces. In Genesis Chapter Four, God warned Cain that sin was crouching at his door, desiring to rule over him. Evil wants to master you. It wants to conquer your will, and enslave you to the chaotic rebellion of the dark principalities. The psalmist realizes that he cannot fight off this domineering force with his own willpower. If his footsteps are established in his own logic, or the shifting sands of cultural trends, evil will easily overwhelm him. The only way to maintain his freedom is to have his footsteps locked firmly into the solid bedrock of God's Word. The cosmic blueprint is his only defense against the dominion of chaos. He then asks for external deliverance. “Rescue me from the oppression of evil people; then I can obey your commandments.” We see this familiar pattern again. The “evil people” are the human proxies of the rebel gods, and they use oppressive tactics to crush the faithful. They use economic pressure, political power, and public slander to wear the believer down. But once again, look at the psalmist's motivation for rescue. Why does he want the oppression to stop? Does he want to get revenge? Does he want to take their power for himself? No. He says, “Rescue me... then I can obey your commandments.” He wants liberty for the sole purpose of unhindered loyalty. He desires freedom from his human oppressors, simply so he can more fully submit to his Divine Master. The fourth segment is: The Radiant Face and the Rivers of Grief Psalm One Hundred Nineteen: verses one hundred thirty-five and one hundred thirty-six. Look down on me with

There is 'Sathya' in Bhagawan's name not because He always speaks the Truth but because what He speaks is the Truth. He is indeed Truth personified. Sometimes when He says something, it might seem completely contrary to our understanding of the situation. But when one dwells deep and prays sincerely for guidance, the Lord does bestow on us the right understanding so that we can decipher his message for us in the right way and then take corrective action which will take us closer to Him. Neeraj Acharya, an alumnus of Bhagawan's university who also had the chance to work in the Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust for over 17 years, in this episode of OMS, recalls one such life-changing interaction with Bhagawan that not only taught him the true meaning of Bhagawan's saying - "I give you what you want so that you may want what I truly want to give you", but also filled him with great peace, contentment and gratitude when he realised how the Divine Master had so beautifully transformed one of his little shortcomings into a blessing and a boon. OMS' is an 'Oh My Sai' series wherein we plan to offer 100 such OMS videos as we march towards Bhagawan's 100th Birthday to be celebrated on Nov 23, 2025.

What does the concept of longevity mean to you? Does it mean pumping your body full of exogenous hormones, peptides, stem cells, brain implants, and gradually replacing your organs with lab-grown pig parts? Perhaps some of us will sign up to be a brain in a jar? Or can we cruise into our second century by living a simple life of self-reflection, meditating deep in the mountains? Afterall, in remote corners of the world, there are legends of yogis and spiritual masters living so long that their true age is forgotten to time. Therefore fear them not. For nothing is covered that shall not be revealed: nor hid, that shall not be known. 27 That which I tell you in the dark, speak ye in the light: and that which you hear in the ear, preach ye upon the housetops. 28 And fear ye not them that kill the body, and are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him that can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and not one of them shall fall on the ground without your Father. 30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.Vestri autem capilli capitis omnes numerati sunt.  31 Fear not therefore: better are you than many sparrows.Nolite ergo timere : multis passeribus meliores estis vos.  32 Every one therefore that shall confess me before men, I will also confess him before my Father who is in heaven.Omnis ergo qui confitebitur me coram hominibus, confitebor et ego eum coram Patre meo, qui in caelis est. St Polycarp, a disciple of St John the Apostle, was Bishop of Smyrna for seventy years, and was martyred under Marcus Aurelius A.D.169. *Personal note...St Polycarp is one of my favorite saints. Maybe just because of his name or maybe because his life story was read to me by my mother when I was a child. One of his traits was avoiding bad people. When others were preaching something different from Our Lord he plugged his ears. All that he learned from St John he taught to others. He was captured when Christians were being put to death. He gave a meal to the men who came to capture him. The judge tried to make him save himself by cursing Jesus. "I have served Jesus eighty-six years," answered the Saint "and He has never done me any wrong. How can I curse the King who died for me?" The soldiers tied St Polycarp's hands behind his back and placed him on a burning pile. But the fire did not harm him. One of the soldiers then stabbed a lance into his heart. And so the holy martyr went to be forever with the Divine Master he had served so well.

SPECIAL GUEST Brother Andre Marie Host of the ReConquest aired only on the Crusade Channel. Follow Brother on GAB and Twitter - @Brother_Andre HEADLINE: Saint Nicholas of Bari (350) by The Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary  The great Saint Nicholas, whom everybody knows and speaks of, was an Archbishop at Myra in Asia Minor.  He has come to be honored as the patron saint of children.  His relics were taken by the Italians to Italy in 1087, and are now honored there, at Bari.  Saint Nicholas raised three children from the dead.  His name has been corrupted from Saint Nicholas into “Santa Claus.”  The true Saint Nicholas is the one who honors those who love and venerate him as a saint, not as an advertisement.  Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of Russia. HEADLINE: Why I Love St. Nicholas by Charles A Coulombe  But one day, the very man who had made Santa live in our home took it upon himself to end my faith in him. Dad explained to me that although he himself was responsible for the actual delivery of gifts, and the North Pole was empty of everything but Polar Bears, Santa made up in symbolic value what he and his cohorts lacked in objective reality. Moreover, he was a sort of image of a very real person, St. Nicholas. Dad then proceeded to pull out from his bookshelf the December 1960 American Heritage and opened it to an article — “A Certain Nicholas of Patara.” Thanks to my father, I shed my belief in Santa and gained instead a love of St. Nicholas.  On a happier note, however, St. Nicholas will always be Christ's second in the matter of Christmas celebration. Alongside his Divine Master, he reminds us that the gifts, the lights, the ornaments, the tree, the holly and the mistletoe, and the Christmas dinner are pointers, not ends in themselves, as we moderns tend to make them. But if we use them rightly, in the true spirit of St. Nicholas, they will bring us not merely to the sentimental joys of this Christmas, and the next, and the next — but to the Eternal Happiness of that Christmas which never ends, but always is. St Nicholas and Father Christmas are not the same person. HEADLINE: The Politics of Christmas by Charles Coulombe   The oldest Cathedral - Saint Nicholas - Calvinist cathedral dedicated. In this country it was illegal to have Christmas! The personification of these became known as “Father Christmas,” who was seen as a political ally in the struggle — and who in time became the major gift giver for children. In sharp contrast to the New England Puritans, their Dutch brethren in what became New York retained Christmas, and most especially the figure of St. Nicholas, who then and now was the gift distributer of Yule in the Netherlands and the rest of Central Europe. He, of course, in turn became our Santa Claus, who has since turned Father Christmas into a sort of clone, despite their wildly different origins. All of that nonsense that Christmas came from Pagan origins - all of that has been debunked. HEADLINE: In Defense of Christmas by Brother Andre Marie The Ox and the Ass know their Maker but Israel knows not its God. If Israel is unworthy he will come in on an Ass or Donkey. He was a Gentile not a Jew. "The ox knows its owner,  and the ass its master's crib;  but Israel does not know,  my people does not understand.”  Isaiah 1:3 ReConquest Episode 400: Don't Call It ‘the Tridentine Mass'!

Sunday, 6 August 2023   And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?” Acts 19:15   The translation could be better: “And having answered, the evil spirit said to them, ‘Jesus I know and Paul I acknowledge; and you – who are you?'”   The previous verse mentioned that there were seven sons of a high priest known as Sceva who acted as exorcists. They had decided to use the name of Jesus whom Paul proclaimed to cast out evil spirits. In doing this, a response was received from someone who truly was possessed by an evil spirit. Luke records the event, beginning with, “And having answered.”   As in the gospels at times, this evil spirit acknowledges the attempt to cast him out, demonstrating that they can think and respond independently of the person they possess. In this case, it next reads, “the evil spirit said to them.”   The evil spirit speaks through the man and for the man. It is the same as occurred with the demoniac in the Gadarenes. The plural, them, means that all seven of the sons are involved. They worked together like the false prophets of Baal in 1 Kings 18. This is contrastedcontrasts with the way that Luke presented the healings and exorcisms connected to Paul. He wasn't even around. Rather, only his handkerchiefs and aprons were there to make a connection to his ministry. In his response to these seven sons of Sceva, the evil spirit said, “Jesus I know and Paul I acknowledge.”   Two different words are used, and the difference should be made in the translation to identify this. However, both words are rather close in meaning and both give the sense of knowing. Vincent's Word Studies says –   “There is a purpose in using two different words to denote the demon's recognition of the Divine Master and of the human agent, though it is not easy to convey the difference in a translation. It is the difference between an instinctive perception or recognition of a supreme power and the more intimate knowledge of a human agent. A divine mystery would invest Jesus, which the demon would feel, though he could not penetrate it. His knowledge of a man would be greater, in his own estimation at least. The difference may be given roughly, thus: ‘Jesus I recognize, and Paul I am acquainted with.'”   Actually, it is just the opposite. The first word is ginóskó. HELPS Word Studies says that it signifies to know through personal experience; to experientially know. They then cite Luke 1:34 as an example, “And Mary [a virgin] said to the angel, ‘How will this be since I do not know (1097 /ginṓskō = sexual intimacy) a man?'”   There is an absolute understanding that exists with this type of “knowing.”   On the other hand, the second word is epistamai. It is derived from epi (upon or on the basis of) and histémi (to set, stand, establish, etc.). It gives the sense of being acquainted with, gaining knowledge through acquaintance, carefully studying a matter, etc.   In the case of Jesus, the evil spirit had an experiential knowledge of Him. In the case of Paul, he had come to know him because Jesus was working through him. Thus, he knows Jesus in an intimate way; Paul he acknowledges only through acquaintance. On the other hand, and speaking to all seven of these sons of Sceva, he next says, “and you – who are you?”   It is a demeaning, even belittling, way of addressing them. First, the sense is, “So what if you use their names (meaning Jesus and Paul in the previous verse). What about you?” The word “you” is plural. The repetition of the address is given as emphasis. In these words, the first “you” speaks of the sons as identifiable entities. The second “you” refers to their existence. Hence, we can paraphrase it as “And you seven guys, who are you all?”   One can imagine that this was done with a hint of sarcasm in the voice as he spoke. He is aware of the names they are expressing, but he is completely unaware and uncaring about who they are as supposed exorcists. This will be communicated in more than words in the verse to come.   Life application: There is no reason to not assume, and every reason to accept, that evil spirits dwell in people today. Just looking around at the people of the world would lead one to think that not only do demons possess people, but that they are doing so in ever greater numbers. This would be because people have opened themselves up to demonic influences through a rejection of what is morally right and good and a complete acceptance of wickedness and perversion.   Their being indwelt probably shouldn't be questioned. But what to do about it is what should be considered. Apostolic authority does not exist today. Jesus has ascended and will return at the appropriate time. He has not personally commissioned anyone since the apostle Paul. Paul even acknowledges this, saying, “Then last of all He was seen by me also, as by one born out of due time” (1 Corinthians 15:8). The “last of all” means that Paul was the last to see Him, and seeing Him is a requirement for being given apostolic authority.   Understanding this, and because the Bible does not provide any prescriptive guidance about how to deal with people possessed by demons, it can be known that we are not given any special authority to do what Jesus and the apostles did. And yet, we have a commission to share the gospel. Therefore, if a person is possessed by a demon, and if that person accepts the gospel, then it must be that this is the way by which God has determined that demons are to be removed from people.   The only other logical assumption would be that there was no way to drive out demons in some people. But that would be contrary to multiple verses in Scripture which indicate that God desires all to be saved. Therefore, it is our responsibility to share the gospel. It is God's responsibility to deal with the demon of someone who accepts the gospel.   Don't be duped by people who claim they have a special ability to cast out demons beyond this. They have gone beyond Scripture and are claiming an authority the Bible does not provide. Ignore such people, lest you get caught up in their ridiculous doctrines and pulled away from what is granted to us in Scripture.   You are so great, O God. You have given us the gospel to share with the world, and it is an incredible authority we possess. We can tell others about how to be saved. In accepting this, those who respond will be freed from any evil that fills their soul. They will be sealed with Your Spirit and will have a new and heavenly hope. It is a great message that possesses power and authority to redirect lives. May we share it often! Amen.

March 19: Saint Joseph, Husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary First Century Solemnity; Liturgical Color: White Patron Saint of the Universal Church, fathers, and a happy death Jesus and Mary lived under his gentle, fatherly authority The husband of Mary had a perfect spouse, untouched by original sin. He was also the foster father to a boy who was the Son of God and the Second Person of the Holy Trinity. Yet Saint Joseph, the least perfect member of his household, was still the head of the family. Authority does not always flow from moral or intellectual superiority. Authority in the Church, in particular, is God given. Because God chooses a certain person to fulfill a task in His household of faith, that person acts with a divine mandate to teach, sanctify, and govern the people and things entrusted to him. Saint Joseph is a model for how God uses imperfect instruments to exercise His perfect will. God does not want robots, machines, or zombies to mindlessly implement His plan for mankind. The history of the Church is replete with imperfect tools who have caused scandal and division. Wayward leaders have cost the Church entire countries. Yet despite all these unworthy instruments in the hands of the Divine Master, truth and shelter and grace continue to be provided to those baptised into the Church, the Master's family. God wants personality. God wants us to have character. God's angels, created spirits, lack the restrictions imposed by a human body. But in not having a body, the angels also lack what makes us unique. They lack the spit, vinegar, and spark that make a man a man. Every man is an enfleshed soul, the coming together of a body and a spirit. This coming together is not half soul and half body, like the mythical centaur with the body of a horse but the torso and head of a man. When copper and zinc are welded together, they are superficially united into one larger piece of metal. But the union is not total and does not create something new. The copper is still copper, and the zinc is still zinc. But when copper and zinc are each melted down and then mixed together, they form brass. Brass is not just the joining of copper to zinc but an entirely new material with unique properties. In a similar way, the union of a body and a soul together composes a human person with unique properties, a child of God unlike any other. The saints, in particular, were unique people often possessing hot tempers, forceful personalities, and unbending wills. They placed their uniqueness at the service of God and His Church and helped to change the world. God did not make, and does not want, just vanilla ice cream. Everyone likes vanilla. But no one likes only vanilla. God wants flavor. Saint Joseph was, like all the saints, unique. He probably had personal traits which were less than perfect. These imperfections were absolutely no obstacle to Mary and Jesus obeying him, loving him, and ceding to his authority in the Holy Family of Nazareth. Mary and Jesus would have happily bent to the will of their God-given guide, despite their metaphysical, moral, spiritual, and intellectual superiority. Ancient traditions hold that Saint Joseph was considerably older than the Virgin Mary. Other traditions tell that he was married previously and that the “brothers” of Jesus were half-brothers from Saint Joseph's previous marriage. Scripture tells us Jesus was a carpenter and was known as the “carpenter's son” (Mt 13:55). Joseph may have been more precisely a builder who worked with the native stone so common to Palestinian construction. A Jewish ritual bath made of stone discovered beneath the church of Saint Joseph in Nazareth, a church which long tradition says was built over the Holy Family's home, may be Joseph's very own handiwork. A firm tradition teaches that Saint Joseph died long before his Son's death. This is based not on biblical evidence but on the lack of it. It can be reasonably presumed that Saint Joseph would have been present at his Son's crucifixion, as was Mary. Yet no mention is made of him being there. From this absence, biblical scholars have, from the beginning of the Church, surmised that Saint Joseph was by then dead. Thus, Saint Joseph is the Patron Saint of a Happy Death, because he presumably died with Jesus and the Virgin Mary at his side. This is how all of us want to die, with Christ holding our hand on one side of the bed and the Virgin Mary seated beside us on the other side. Saint Joseph died in the best of company. May we do so as well. Saint Joseph, Patron of the Universal Church, guide all those under the care of their pastors to see not their imperfections but their God-given obligation to fulfill God's plan. May your humble and faithful service inspire all fathers to lead their flocks with tenderness, wisdom, and strength.

–Sr. Janice Golez, PDDM | Disciples of the Divine Master

October 14: Saint Callistus I, Pope and Martyrc. Late Second Century–222Optional Memorial; Liturgical Color: RedPatron Saint of cemetery workersA slave takes charge of a catacomb and rises to the papacyPopes owned slaves for centuries to row their boats, cook their meals, and care for their horses and carriages. Kings, nobles, and middle-class families owned slaves. Slavery was a ubiquitous institution not necessarily rooted in racism, which was a latecomer as a rationale for enslavement. Rather, prisoners of war and criminals of every skin color were enslaved as alternatives to capital punishment. Others were born into slavery from slave mothers, and still others in desperate circumstances sold themselves into slavery in exchange for food, shelter, and security. Today's saint, according to ancient sources, served as a slave in a Roman home for many years and thus was part of that massive social reality of slavery that not even Saint Paul explicitly condemned in his letter to Philemon. Since he was an intelligent and resourceful servant, Callistus' master put him in charge of his personal bank. But when Callistus lost its deposits, he was blamed and was eventually exiled to the mines of Sardinia. At some point he was released from this hard labor and earned freedom from his slave status.Pope Zephyrinus, elected in 199, placed the capable Callistus in charge of the most important underground Christian cemetery in Rome. Under Callistus it eventually grew into a sprawling, thirteen-mile warren of dark, narrow tunnels lined with tombs chiseled out of the soft tufa stone. 500,000 bodies were encased in its walls! Callistus was so successful in managing the cemetery that it came to bear his name, and bears it still—the Catacombs of Saint Callistus. Besides numerous martyrs, it also houses a famous chapel for nine third-century popes. The Catacombs were ground zero for early Christian devotion in Rome. They were not hiding places from persecution but sacred ground on which to kneel beside a martyr's lifeless body. Saint Jerome himself writes about his regular visits to pray at the martyrs' tombs in the catacombs a century and a half after Callistus expanded them. There were no Viking funerals, Hindu pyres, or urns on the mantle for these early Christians. They believed in the resurrection of the body, as the Church still does. They knew, instinctively, that it was more fitting to bury a body, to keep watch with the dead, than to casually bake a body like a pie.The same Pope Zephyrinus ordained Callistus as a deacon. Deacons have a tighter bond, theologically, with bishops than with priests. Since the Acts of the Apostles, they were ordained specifically to assist the first bishops, the Apostles. The first three centuries of the Church resound with the names of deacons, such as Saints Lawrence and Vincent, who were martyred alongside the popes and bishops they served. Pope Saint Sixtus II was killed, in fact, along with his coterie of deacons after they were all arrested in the Catacombs of Callistus in 258. In approximately 217, Deacon Callistus was elected the Bishop of Rome, crowning his long and arduous path from slavery to a more exalted form of service to the Divine Master as head of the entire Church.Pope Callistus encountered resistance over the perennial third-century theological-pastoral issue of how to reintegrate into the Body of Christ Catholics who had been forced to engage in emperor worship. Callistus held that if God could forgive murder and adultery he could forgive idolatry too. No sin was unforgivable. His bitter enemies, including the first antipope, Hippolytus, considered Callistus too lax and committed their calumnies to writing. This damaged Callistus' reputation into modern times, when scholarship finally called into question the veracity of his enemies' accounts. Saint Callistus' life is not richly detailed, but he died in 222, most likely by martyrdom and, ironically, was not buried in his eponymous Catacomb. His original tomb was rediscovered in 1960. His remains had been transferred in the ninth century to Rome's Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, which tradition holds was built over, or next to, an earlier church of which Callistus was the patron.Saint Callistus, you served an earthly master as a slave and a heavenly master as a deacon and pope. You made Christian burial and praying for the dead a defining feature of the Church of Rome. May we honor you in death just as you honored so well your own forebearers in the faith.

Role of Law Award Citation The Reverend Monsignor John J. M. Foster  At every annual convention since 1973, the Canon Law Society of America has recognized one of its members with the Role of Law Award, the Society's highest honor. The Board of Governors selects the recipient based on his or her (1) embodiment of pastoral attitude, (2) commitment to research and study, (3) participation in the development of law, (4) a response to needs or practical assistance, and (5) facilitation of dialogue and the interchange of ideas within the Society and with other groups.  This year's recipient was born and raised in the upper Midwest, attending public schools until the third grade and then switching to Catholic schools through the completion of college. Our honoree was both a high school valedictorian and college valedictorian. Discerning that he was not called to the priesthood, our colleague became a National Defense Education Fellow in the counseling psychology program at Colorado State University. As a fellow, he interned at the VA hospital in Palo Alto, California before earning both masters and doctoral degrees in psychology.  Following the completion of his training in psychology, tonight's honoree served as an assistant professor of psychology and director of the Counseling Center at Clarke College before moving to Loras College, where he rose to be an associate professor of psychology and education and Vice President for Student Development and Dean of Students. His résumé in the field of psychology highlights his chairmanship of the Iowa Board of Psychology from 1984 through 1990 and again in 2008 and his service as vice president and president of the Federation of Associations of Regulatory Boards and the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards. In 1995, our honoree served as the general secretary of the First International Conference on Licensure, Certification, and Credentialing of Psychologists in New Orleans. Named a fellow of the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards in 1993, he received the Association's Morton Berger Award in 1996.  Taking the Divine Master at his word to place his talents at the service of the Church, the recipient of this year's Role of Law Award started his studies for the JCL at the Catholic University of America in 1994. He sat directly behind me in class during the two summers we studied together. In fact, our honoree was the first person I ever heard use the term 1095—as if he knew what he was talking about. Come to find out, he did!  Graduating from CUA in 1998 with a licentiate in canon law, our colleague has served this Society as the chair of the Marriage Research Committee, on the Board of Governors as secretary and consultor, and on tribunal review teams. He has used his education, training, and experience in psychology in numerous presentations at national and regional canon law meetings; as an advocate, promoter of justice, and judge in penal cases; and as a peritus, assessor, and judge in marriage cases. His publications in both psychology and canon law are numerous.  In 1979, tonight's honoree was ordained as a permanent deacon for the Archdiocese of Dubuque. Since then, he has served as the assistant director and director of the Office of the Permanent Diaconate in Dubuque. At the national level, he has served as the treasurer and secretary of the National Association of Diaconate Directors.  For the first time, the Role of Law Award is presented to a permanent deacon—and a most worthy one at that. Please join me in congratulating Deacon Gerald Jorgensen.

To be a Christian, to be a disciple of Jesus, to participate in the Revolutionary Kingdom of Christ, is to be a follower of the Lamb—the Lamb who takes away the sin of the world. But what does this mean?___________Here is the text to the prayer of St. Francis...Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace.Where there is hatred, let me sow love;where there is injury, pardon;where there is doubt, faith;where there is despair, hope;where there is darkness, light;where there is sadness, joy.O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;to be understood as to understand;to be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive;it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life.Amen.
