March 19: Saint Joseph, Husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary First Century Solemnity; Liturgical Color: White Patron Saint of the Universal Church, fathers, and a happy death Jesus and Mary lived under his gentle, fatherly authority The husband of Mary had a perfect spouse, untouched by original sin. He was also the foster father to a boy who was the Son of God and the Second Person of the Holy Trinity. Yet Saint Joseph, the least perfect member of his household, was still the head of the family. Authority does not always flow from moral or intellectual superiority. Authority in the Church, in particular, is God given. Because God chooses a certain person to fulfill a task in His household of faith, that person acts with a divine mandate to teach, sanctify, and govern the people and things entrusted to him. Saint Joseph is a model for how God uses imperfect instruments to exercise His perfect will. God does not want robots, machines, or zombies to mindlessly implement His plan for mankind. The history of the Church is replete with imperfect tools who have caused scandal and division. Wayward leaders have cost the Church entire countries. Yet despite all these unworthy instruments in the hands of the Divine Master, truth and shelter and grace continue to be provided to those baptised into the Church, the Master's family. God wants personality. God wants us to have character. God's angels, created spirits, lack the restrictions imposed by a human body. But in not having a body, the angels also lack what makes us unique. They lack the spit, vinegar, and spark that make a man a man. Every man is an enfleshed soul, the coming together of a body and a spirit. This coming together is not half soul and half body, like the mythical centaur with the body of a horse but the torso and head of a man. When copper and zinc are welded together, they are superficially united into one larger piece of metal. But the union is not total and does not create something new. The copper is still copper, and the zinc is still zinc. But when copper and zinc are each melted down and then mixed together, they form brass. Brass is not just the joining of copper to zinc but an entirely new material with unique properties. In a similar way, the union of a body and a soul together composes a human person with unique properties, a child of God unlike any other. The saints, in particular, were unique people often possessing hot tempers, forceful personalities, and unbending wills. They placed their uniqueness at the service of God and His Church and helped to change the world. God did not make, and does not want, just vanilla ice cream. Everyone likes vanilla. But no one likes only vanilla. God wants flavor. Saint Joseph was, like all the saints, unique. He probably had personal traits which were less than perfect. These imperfections were absolutely no obstacle to Mary and Jesus obeying him, loving him, and ceding to his authority in the Holy Family of Nazareth. Mary and Jesus would have happily bent to the will of their God-given guide, despite their metaphysical, moral, spiritual, and intellectual superiority. Ancient traditions hold that Saint Joseph was considerably older than the Virgin Mary. Other traditions tell that he was married previously and that the “brothers” of Jesus were half-brothers from Saint Joseph's previous marriage. Scripture tells us Jesus was a carpenter and was known as the “carpenter's son” (Mt 13:55). Joseph may have been more precisely a builder who worked with the native stone so common to Palestinian construction. A Jewish ritual bath made of stone discovered beneath the church of Saint Joseph in Nazareth, a church which long tradition says was built over the Holy Family's home, may be Joseph's very own handiwork. A firm tradition teaches that Saint Joseph died long before his Son's death. This is based not on biblical evidence but on the lack of it. It can be reasonably presumed that Saint Joseph would have been present at his Son's crucifixion, as was Mary. Yet no mention is made of him being there. From this absence, biblical scholars have, from the beginning of the Church, surmised that Saint Joseph was by then dead. Thus, Saint Joseph is the Patron Saint of a Happy Death, because he presumably died with Jesus and the Virgin Mary at his side. This is how all of us want to die, with Christ holding our hand on one side of the bed and the Virgin Mary seated beside us on the other side. Saint Joseph died in the best of company. May we do so as well. Saint Joseph, Patron of the Universal Church, guide all those under the care of their pastors to see not their imperfections but their God-given obligation to fulfill God's plan. May your humble and faithful service inspire all fathers to lead their flocks with tenderness, wisdom, and strength.

The Christian faith should prepare us for death. In fact, it should prepare us to face death without fear, and to die well. In fact, Catholicism has a long tradition of something called “The Good Death,” or “The Happy Death.” What is that, and how do we obtain it?

ST. DOMINIC SAVIO | PATRON OF THE SMALL BOYS, THE FALSELY ACCUSED AND THE JUVENILE DELINQUENTS. Feast Day: May 6 To give us inspiration today is a young saint who was a model of piety, purity and care He is no other than the famous St. Dominic Savio. Remember the saint closely related him? His mentor and biographer? Yes, St. John Bosco, or Don Bosco, Founder of the Salesian Order. Now, St. Dominic was born in San Giovanni, Piedmont, Italy on April 2, 1842 to a poor but devout Christian family. There were nine children in the brood, but the parents taught them how to love God. Even as a young boy, Dominic was well-behaved and loved to pray. At the age of seven, Dominic asked to receive his First Holy Communion. The age for children to receive First Communion at that time was 12 years old. But the parish priest who had observed how good the boy was, made an exception and allowed him. On the day of his First Holy Communion, Dominic made the following resolutions: to have as friends Jesus and Mary and to die rather than commit sin. When Don Bosco visited the parish of Dominic, the parish priest introduced the boy to the holy Founder. They conversed and Don Bosco immediately agreed to take Dominic with him to the Oratory for boys. At the oratory, the great preoccupation of Dominic was to become a saint. He would make big penances. When Don Bosco noticed it, he told him that as a child he must spend more time to his studies. Once, he was falsely accused, but he did not justify himself. Don Bosco was greatly edified when the true culprit was discovered. After some time, Dominic's health started to deteriorate. The doctor suggested that he go home to recover, but Dominic refused to leave. Don Bosco insisted that it was good to be home so as to recover at once. Dominic, on his part, had the feeling that he was going to die soon. Before leaving, he prayed the Prayer for a Happy Death. Four days later, his health worsened. He asked to have Confession and after confessing, he fell asleep, only to wake up a few hours later to say goodbye to his parents. Then he exclaimed "Oh, what wonderful things I see." Then he closed his eyes again and slept the sleep of death. It was March 9, 1857. He was 14 years old. Dominic was beatified in Rome on March 5, 1950, by Pope Pius XII and was canonized on June 12, 1954, by the same Pontiff. He is the patron of small boys, the falsely accused and the juvenile delinquents. “St. Dominic, what prayerful child you have been. We pray to you to help today's children to imitate your piety and holy life and have Jesus as a friend.” Am I afraid to commit sin and avoid occasion of sin, or I don't care at all?

The key to a happy death is not a long and fulfilled life—it’s a life of gratitude for the time given. Here’s why: We often forget that this life isn’t owed to us. Every breath we take is a gift from God, who is holding us in existence at this very moment. Once we start to think that this life is owed to us, that in some way we deserve it, we will become ungrateful for the time that is given, even if we’ve lived a long and happy life. Today, Father Mike explains how to fill your life with gratitude, and how that will prepare you for a happy death.

This week's episode is about a friend of mine, the late, great Dave Lyon.  I had the privilege to help produce his last album, called Black Pearl, that was named in honor of his beautiful Creole, Louisiana-born and bred, wife, Evelyn.   Dave passed away on September 19, 2020 from stage four liver cancer.  Unbeknownst to him at the time of the recording and producing, the album work was conducted by all involved with an intensity mainly due to the tour schedule of Switchback.  That intensity really "was being in the moment" and the joy that resulted of that moment was the legacy of bliss that ended up being Dave's posthumous album.   In many ways, Dave's last few months on this plane set him up for what is known as "A Happy Death."   A happy death is described by the Roman Catholic Church as having "all your spiritual ducks in a row" before checking out.  In other words, being in a state of contentment, joy and bliss.    Coincidentally, in researching this podcast, I came across the book Albert Camus wrote called The Happy Death.  Camus describes the Happy Death in his book (a sort of introspection into his own yearnings) as "will to happiness," the conscious creation of one's happiness, and the need of time (and money) to do so.   One of his characters in the novel, a man who is an invalid and has a great deal of wealth, mourns the fact that he is facing the end of his days by not pursuing Joy/Bliss.   "Only it takes time to be happy. A lot of time. Happiness, too, is a long patience. And in almost every case, we use up our lives making money, when we should be using our money to gain time." Four cuts are featured on this podcast from  Black Pearl.  Due to David's illness, much of the final production was done by his friend, Ron Gordon, in Evergreen, Colorado.  Ron had the unenviable task of putting the final touches on the album, while bearing witness to the decline of Dave's health.  What the final result of the album is, is a strong tribute, a fine performance and an album bubbling with optimism.   Enjoy the podcast.

Greg Akerman and Steve Cross (Chaotic Adequate podcast) join Flixwatcher to review Greg’s choice Happy Death Day.   Happy Death Day is a 2017 comedic horror film from Blumhouse starring Jessica Rothe trapped and reliving the same day until she is brutally murdered directed by Christopher (Paranormal Activity) Landon. Essentially a horror version of Groundhog Day, in Happy Death Day Theresa/Tree (Rothe) is forced to relive the same day over and over - except in this version it always ends with her brutal death - on her birthday. The only way to stop the loop is by trying to figure out who is trying to kill her. What Happy Death Day lacks in horror or gore it makes up for it with humour and absurd deaths. While Happy Death Day retreads familiar time loop cliches and tropes it does so it an unapologetic and ridiculous way that if you can forgive all that you’ll have a lovely time. Scores [supsystic-tables id=159] Despite Steve hating pretty much everything about it, Happy Death Day still scores a fairly decent 3.57 overall. What do you guys think? On this month's podcast, Kayla and Tyler revisit one of their favorite (ongoing, damn it!) film series and talk Happy Death Day(s). The double features serves up a delightful stew of slasher elements, time nonsense, a lovable and laugh-inducing cast, and moving stories about grief! Also, Kayla challenges a movie producer to a fistfight and learns how Patreon works shortly before leaving the country. Are all these things connected? Probably, but we'll need to relive this day a few more times before we know for sure. Support us on Patreon to earn either undying loyalty or a postcard. 2:00 - Recently watched (John Wick trilogy, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, A Cure for Wellness) 25:23 - Feature presentation (Happy Death Day, Happy Death Day 2U) 45:10 - The Challenge for Happy Death Day 55:42 - Recommendations (You Might be the Killer, Serial Mom) 1:03:10 - Kayla learns how Patreon works

http://PatriarchMinistries.com Join Patti Brunner and Truth of the Spirit for concluding Facing Finals Session 3: Preparing for a Happy Death and Eternal Life. Saint Anthony of Padua wrote that “Nothing is more certain than death and nothing more uncertain than the day and hour of our death.” Sue Yarbrough taught children, “The happiest day of your life is the day you die and get to go to heaven!” In this Facing Finals episode of Truth of the Spirit, Patti Brunner shares that a happy death does not mean an ‘easy’ death. In fact death surrounded by great suffering can still be a happy death. Suffering in this world is not rejection by God. Suffering began by man rejecting God. God so loved the World that He sent his only son to suffer and die in this world so that we could have the opportunity to never suffer again for all eternity—and the person who repents shall live forever in joy. This journey of life is not geared toward a momentary “payoff” like presents on Christmas morning. The joy lasts forever for those called to the table of the eternal banquet in heaven. And it starts with a happy death: A death in friendship with God, a death  dwelling in God’s grace. Included on the blog on Patriarchministries.com are some of the bereavement services offered by St. Vincent de Paul Church in Rogers, AR.
