Pastor Bill: [0:00] Hello and welcome to season 3 episode 57 of the Berean Manifesto; Faith, Hope, and Love for the modern Christian. I'm Pastor Bill and I'm joined with me today with is as wow fumble - fumble on the play and I'm not a sports guy that still said that I was fun. I'm joined by Pastor Newms, as always, it's not like he's a guest or anything he's a regular staple on this show it's the Pastor and Newms, Pastor Newms and Pastor Bill show. Pastor Newms: No Pastor Bill: But we do have a Gaming With The Pastors that we should be doing more often than we do. We're currently playing through Borderlands. Pastor Newms: [0:44] Yes. Pastor Bill: [0:45] And that's where Newms is supposed to say. You're supposed to say, “catch a ride.” Pastor Newms: [0:50] Yeah catch a ride yeah. (with zero enthusiasm) Pastor Bill: [0:54] Not like that. Pastor Newms: [0:54] Catch a Ride! (hollered in a country back water hoe down voice) Pastor Bill: [0:57] Hey. Pastor Newms: [0:57] It's a fun it's a fun game I love that game it's one of my favorite games of all time that series of games is one of my favorite. Pastor Bill: [1:08] It's a bit intense in certain places. Pastor Newms: [1:10] You know it's not “a bit” intense when certain of the bad guys that have very interesting names come out how they denote Elites in that game, when they come out it's you know it so, speaking of them there is actually from gearbox Studios which is who made Borderlands there's a free game on Epic store right now, no our volume is not turned down Zaydiee you should be able to hear us pretty clear. I might be slightly quieter. They have a free game on Epic store by the way that launched either today or yesterday that you shouldn't look at right now. I know that the sound should be pretty loud I'm watching the levels it's bouncing into the yellow when it should so. So how was my week my week was pretty good okay go ahead. Pastor Bill: [2:19] So this week we are addressing an issue about celebrating or not celebrating, um it's a whole thing and you know with the holiday season upon us and, what do you celebrate what do you not celebrate what do you do what do you not do what do you and it is this whole thing that people struggle with every year and we're going to address this, the title of tonight's episode is Mary asceticism, and so that's where we're going tonight and so I just want to throw that out there right quick to get everybody's brain running if you're going to be following along in your Bibles we will be in Matthew and John and Romans, and Galatians and Colossians and Corinthians and Philippians tonight so if you got a. Just chilling and probably Timothy since the scripture bump verse was from Timothy so yeah so if you want to just, if you have a mind like a steel trap and can't remember all the things I did rattled off. Pastor Newms: [3:29] Or we'll just put them up as we as we go put them into the chat Mmm Yeah. Pastor Bill: [3:33] In preparation just you know Marvin them ahead of time so Pastor newms. Pastor Newms: [3:37] My week was pretty good actually you can't hear me breathing you can hear my fan on I forgot to turn it down that's my bad. That should be better now you usually can't hear me but unless I'm just breathing that heavy today because I am large. Don't breathe into that you know that's going to cause nothing but trouble my mic is my camera is not wanting to focus today it is like jerking it out today don't know why, my week was good we have a go live for work going on throughout the whole weekend and, it's actually going on right now as we migrate patients into an EMR. So that's a that's how my week went Was preparing for that and, the team has worked tirelessly this weekend to do so why are you putting those on now. Pastor Bill: [4:48] I just realized you're not in my ears. Pastor Newms: [4:50] Oh so. Pastor Bill: [4:53] That might be our volume problem is it might be canceling you out because it's hearing your choice. Pastor Newms: [5:02] That very well could be the aspect, so that was that was pretty good I did get my office decorated finally for Christmas and I got my. An early Christmas present to myself in. And it's behind me which is fun so he's hiding he's hiding. Pastor Bill: [5:34] I don't see it. Pastor Newms: [5:37] He's hiding but you can see him. Pastor Bill: [5:42] That's where my face is on my screen. Pastor Newms: [5:44] Oh so you can't see him so. Pastor Bill: [5:47] Against him. Pastor Newms: [5:48] I got a Build-A-Bear which we all know I love, Build-A-Bear not sponsored or anything I just absolutely love them and where they've taken their company they released the 70 70th, 30th 30th 70th he's not that old the 30th Anniversary Deadpool, bear and they went with his gray costume for it which according to build a bear's birth certificate that they send out with all their Bears the gray is actually heather gray which I found to be very interesting I was like ooh, okay. Pastor Bill: [6:26] I like the Heather colors I like heather gray Heather pink like this. Pastor Newms: [6:31] So that's what he technically is and so then I redid the rest and put up my Christmas tree which is a black Christmas tree with at the top I don't know if you can tell but at the very top my tree topper is the V for Vendetta masks because, that works, um and then I rotated my stuff over here so everyone can prominently see the Frankie for the moment. Pastor Bill: [6:58] The Frankie and the Yoda look almost like they could have descended from the same species. Pastor Newms: [7:03] A date they kind of do and I switched which Venom's are out which you guys probably can't tell because they're just, Venom's but actual Venom and Venom eyes punishers out instead of x-23 and Gwenpool vandalized so, yeah so my week was pretty good just a lot of work and I was very tired a lot this week and so that's one of the reasons we didn't do you gave me with the pastor I went to, bed early a couple nights so how was your week. Pastor Bill: [7:43] Ruff had a lot of physical pain and found out we're not going to end up getting the Acura back, it would be 11 thousand dollars to put in a new engine because it needs a new engine so we're going to have to, go and clean it all out and try to figure out how to, solitary junkyard or something because it has a salvage title so I'm not even sure we could send it to auction anywhere I don't know. Pastor Newms: [8:14] I don't know. Pastor Bill: [8:16] So yeah so there's that and I went ahead and upgraded my phone so I gotta, a new phone I got a Samsung Galaxy Z flip three so third generation of this flip-flop, I didn't realize that when I was getting it and actually they were running a special they gave me, a crazy amount of trade in for my iPhone 11 which then brought the price of this phones monthly payment down so low that I was able to then also start the process of upgrading money, iPad Mini 2 and I'm still going to end up paying less a month, when all is said and done that I was paying for my iPhone 11. Yeah without the trade in this phone would have been a little less than the payments for the iPhone but not by much. Pastor Newms: [9:19] Yeah knock me. Pastor Bill: [9:22] It's cool I got I got that new phone it's not as awesome the cameras on this great the screen super Vivid. Um and it's neat to be able to have a flip phone again I loved my Razor foot from back in the day and I wanted one of the Razer smartphones when it came out but it was so dang expensive and on the wrong cell phone carrier, for me I have AT&T when I had T-Mobile back in the day you said it was T-Mobile. Pastor Newms: [9:56] Verizon Razor. Pastor Bill: [9:59] I don't think I've ever had Verizon. Pastor Newms: [10:01] Razor the Razor phone was pretty much everywhere when it was out, but the razor flip is run specifically for some reason I think Verizon paid him to do it or something at you know contracts are funny so. Pastor Bill: [10:15] That's usually how that kind of thing goes but I told myself is that the iPhone 13 came out and it wasn't a flip phone, then I was going to stop getting iPhones when I upgraded and then it came out and it was a hey we had another camera again yay look at us we're awesome and I went nope I'm done. Pastor Newms: [10:35] Their cameras are phenomenal but that's one of the only things that are valid on. Pastor Bill: [10:39] You they used to innovate and now they just add cameras I'm I'm I'm done I'm over it so. Pastor Newms: [10:48] I saw me man it was like iPhone 100 and the back was just cameras it's just. Pastor Bill: [10:56] For a while there they just kept getting bigger and I would hold my iPad Mini up to my ear and be like the new iPhone 40. Pastor Newms: [11:04] Yeah it's. Pastor Bill: [11:08] Because it just kept getting bigger and bigger and I was like how big how big is this going to go and then they switch from getting bigger to just adding more cameras and it was okay we're back. Pastor Newms: [11:18] Yeah their innovation. Pastor Bill: [11:20] Gonna have cameras. Pastor Newms: [11:21] Definitely slow down and that's very frustrating, and that's one thing about the Android you can't really stop innovating with Android the operating system because if you do someone else is going to, with the iPhone they got complacent because they captured a market group and like you were discussing earlier when we were on our pre call, you know you're dealing with some headaches because now you and your wife are on different OS has and there are certain programs that don't, Mash correctly and so it causes problems and that's, how Macan Android does it too. Everyone in the upside of Android is is since its certain parts of it are open source, everyone can stay current now the big thing about of course the, Androids are they every version is vastly different a Samsung, you know the basics are the same but then every company builds a little layer above it so the Samsung OS is slightly different than the. Whoever, the native like the native Google because Google does have the pixels pixel phones too small for me I'd like it because it doesn't have all the bloatware that the other phones have, that's the other thing I hate about phones is the bloatware but, that keeps the cost down a little bit so the phone might be more expensive without the bloatware because the company wouldn't be getting handed money to put said bloatware on there and then make up their profits elsewhere but that's beside the point. Pastor Bill: [13:17] I mean as it is this phone's are eighteen hundred dollar phone. I can't imagine it getting much more expensive. Pastor Newms: [13:24] The but but the flip developing that flip technology was not cheap and we do not have it everywhere yet that the foldable screen technology is still. Pastor Bill: [13:38] Yeah and even the Razer smartphone it's not a foldable screen it's isn't it two panes of glass. I think it is I think the Razer smartphone is two panes of glass that then, meet up in the middle but this the Samsung Galaxy it is it's a foldable screen and if you're if you're looking at just right you can see. Freeze in the middle of the screen you know, um and that and and the fact that I don't have as much control over the notifications that it gives me, are the only real downsides that the camera the lack of control over notifications and that little crease in the middle of the screen, are the downsides to this phone but I I like having a flip phone it's, I've always wanted to I wanted to flip phone I was seriously considering getting rid of my smartphone to get a flip phone at one point because I was like I just I just want to flip phone I just I want to go back to a flip phone and tell ya. So now I have a flip phone. Pastor Newms: [14:49] Yeah yeah and it's not gimmicky. Pastor Bill: [14:52] As you were saying you were saying you know I don't understand why you got a gimmick phone and I was like give it phone has a flip phone come on man what don't you understand about this, it's a flip phone. Pastor Newms: [15:04] That's the gimmick they even put it in the name. Pastor Bill: [15:09] And they put it in the name. Pastor Newms: [15:10] Which is fine to each their own my phone is gimmicky the note, and it's a gimmick because it plainly says note it comes with a pen and you can write on it I mean Samsung is not, super original with their naming conventions let's be honest it's like Galaxy because that's kind of cool and then it's like. Pastor Bill: [15:35] Scribe. Pastor Newms: [15:36] Edit it's like note. Pastor Bill: [15:37] The Galaxy scribe comes with a stylus. Pastor Newms: [15:40] So Pastor Bill: [15:44] I bet they're going to come out with Galaxy scroll and it's going to be a completely rollable phone a roll it up. Pastor Newms: [15:50] There is actually they're working on come like little like. They're not good yet but they do their screens that completely roll up and plug into stuff you know. Pastor Bill: [16:07] I saw a video of a TV in Japan at an expo we're just roll up the whole TV I use roll it up. Pastor Newms: [16:12] The bend yeah. Pastor Bill: [16:16] Carrie where you want to go and I didn't roll it leaned up against the wall plug it in and start watching TV. Pastor Newms: [16:22] Yep. Pastor Bill: [16:25] The only hard part was the ports you know to plug devices. Pastor Newms: [16:29] Because they have to be the downside I struggle with the curved screens that are becoming popular, the edges because they mess with my peripheral vision actually give me headaches if I use them, so I have two monitors that do a perfect rack and your brain goes your brain goes those are two monitors because they're flat but once you curve them your brain goes, is this reality and you're like no stop getting nauseous we're not actually on a Starship flying through the air upside down I think we might be know, we're not calm down no we're sick now. Pastor Bill: [17:08] I think we might be I think we. Pastor Newms: [17:10] We're sick now okay we're sick now. Pastor Bill: [17:14] It's like me with VR Gerg has a VR headset and I can play um beat saber with it no problem, you just turn it on and and the menu pops up and it's just the menu and it's mostly static there's a little bit of movement I lose all sense of. Balance all sense of what's the word the thing your inner ear does equilibrium. Anyway I lose everything and I just start falling as straight fall over. My brain can't process what's going on I just I completely lose everything I'm just like don't come grab anything because I can tell I'm going down but. Pastor Newms: [18:05] The worst the worst for me is the the VR makes me sick makes me very nauseous try to play Doom VR and that was a very very bad idea, but the planetariums zooming through space and it's all around you that sets my nausea, to the 9th degree and I end up being out for the rest of the day the last time it happened someone actually gave me nausea and, vertigo medicine to calm me down because I was so sick and nauseous, so I don't deliver planetariums anymore I figured I'd give it a shot because I'm old now and now it just got worse I used to just get headaches I have no longer at the headache stage the big big screens do it too you know your bigger movie theaters can cause that too. Pastor Bill: [19:01] Oh man the IMAX. Pastor Newms: [19:03] Yes from Tamil thank you IMAX. Pastor Bill: [19:04] Yeah I cannot do the IMAX I went to an IMAX to watch a Harry Potter once because the, the museum was doing this special thing with you know how Harry Potter how real science in the real world can reproduce the things you seen are something like that you know and then we wash one of the movies I couldn't do it it made me so sick. [19:29] Yeah. Pastor Newms: [19:29] Yeah no. Pastor Bill: [19:31] Alright so that was our weeks now it's time for getting to know the pastor. Pastor Newms: [19:36] I was really hoping because you hadn't brought it up yet I was really hoping you completely forgot yeah I know I thought I was lucky. Pastor Bill: [19:45] Okay here we go if you could undo one moment and your life. Pastor Newms: [20:09] I can't think of anything because everything that's happened in my past, is so developmentally important even the traumas I think they're all important, even the huge mistakes that I've made in stuff without them I would not be where I am and be who I am, I often think back when asked questions like this to the movie Butterfly Effect I don't know if you've ever seen, it's a weird movie fair warning if you were to go look it up it's not something I would condone for all people I like it but that's me. But every time he tries to change one event he gets back to the present and it's just like, the world is completely different because the series of events that happened because of it. So yeah but it is a good movie and one. Pastor Bill: [21:09] Good movie Ashton Kutcher. Pastor Newms: [21:10] One of my favorite actors is in it the the larger gentleman who's his college roommate. And it's really funny some of the things that happens to will some of it's very sad but one of the times he goes back and he comes back and the guy is like a juggalo, and it's like uh looks why are you wearing clown makeup and sitting in the corner homey like what is wrong with you dude like what happened to you who hurt you and then they go into it and it doesn't end well but, you know it's interesting to see you know these are the things that are changed because you did one thing, seriously my camera is like not able to zoom in my face today I don't know what it is, every little movement. Pastor Bill: [22:01] Don't you hate that you rearrange stuff and you're like what did I change specifically that's causing this problem. Pastor Newms: [22:08] Is it cuz my shirt is green and is it cuz I tried to turn the Christmas lights on and that was unbearable it was so bright. Okay. Pastor Bill: [22:25] Yeah I can't think of anything I would change you there that's that's um yeah. Pastor Newms: [22:27] I don't I don't I don't I don't think things like that will ever turn out correctly maybe because of that movie that made every when I was younger cemented that in my mind. Pastor Bill: [22:40] Movie soured soured time travel. Pastor Newms: [22:42] Do not go back in the past and trying to change an event it will not work out how you think. Tina said she can't actually watch because it's zooming in and out so much it's making her nauseated. Pastor Bill: [22:57] Oh no. Pastor Newms: [22:59] So she's sitting in their coloring and not looking up. Pastor Bill: [23:03] That's an awful I'm sorry Sadie. Pastor Newms: [23:05] I'll try to sit perfectly still because it's only when I move so which not moving is something I am not good at. Pastor Bill: [23:14] Right. Pastor Newms: [23:15] So weird I can't say. Pastor Bill: [23:20] Asceticism. Pastor Newms: [23:21] I'm not going to try I have I I tried to say it several times earlier and even in me stumbling with just me in the room I gave up trying to say it so I'ma let you say it every time and I'm not going to. Pastor Bill: [23:44] Lost the scripture where that where the word is actually used where is it. Pastor Newms: [23:56] So lady asked how I knew she was coloring, and that's because if you're not paying attention to the screen that's all you, would be doing because you're not on the device right now cuz you're talking to us you don't have apps open so. You're either coloring drawing or doing art so coloring was the easiest of those three so I took it took a step yeah Biggs it's real hard my foot is tapping, a crazy amount to try to keep my upper body sitting still for this just saying. Pastor Bill: [24:39] All right we're going to start in Colossians chapter 2 and we're going to read verses eight through 23. Here we go all right, be careful that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit based on human tradition. Based on the elements of the world rather than Christ, for the entire fullness of God's nature dwells bodily in Christ and you have been filled by him who is the head over every ruler and Authority, you were also circumcised any him with a circumcision not done with hands by putting off the body of Flesh in the circumcision of Christ when you were buried with him in baptism in which you were also raised with him through faith in the working of God who raised him from the dead, and when you were dead in trespasses and in the uncircumcision of your flesh he made you alive with him and forgave us all our trespasses, he erased the certificate of death with its obligations that was against us and opposed to us and has taken it away by nailing it to the cross, he disarmed the rulers and authorities and disgrace them publicly he triumphed over them in him, therefore this is the meat of why we're in collusion. Don't let anyone judge you in regard to food and drink or in the matter of a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day, these are a shadow of what was to come the substance is Christ let no one can dim You by delighting in ascetic practices asceticism. And the worship of angels claiming access to a Visionary realm such people are inflated by empty Notions of their unspiritual mind, he doesn't hold onto the head from whom the whole body nourished and held together by his ligaments and tendons grows with growth from God. If you died with Christ to the elements of this world, why do you live as if you still belong to the world why do you submit to regulations don't handle don't taste don't touch, all these regulations refer to what is destined to perish by being used up they are human commands and doctrines, although these have a reputation for wisdom by promoting self-made religion false humility and severe treatment of the body they are not of any value in curbing self-indulgence. So asceticism or ascetic practices is to deny yourself of something because you think that something is bad or Unholy or Pagan or, yada yada yada right. Pastor Newms: [28:00] Yeah and I like how the other translations translate that word. Which is voluntary humility and it, it doesn't grasp the term correctly because it's actually three different, Greek words and they like in the KJV they just made it those two words but they are not small words. Well in is cuz that's of but the other two are very heavy words and so it's interesting that the CSB chooses. What it chooses and the other ones what they choose but it definitely is those types of practices. It's what it's talking about when you look at the Greek that is. Very large one of the words is a compound word that's like that long. Pastor Bill: [29:20] Tap enough real soon a tap enough Rose Whitney. Pastor Newms: [29:28] So yeah. Pastor Bill: [29:36] All right. So there's every year there's always this debate. The Pagan tree thing that people throw at a lot you know. Pastor Newms: [29:53] That one. Pastor Bill: [29:54] No why why would we bring in a tree you know and have these paying in Traditions in our home and and that it ended and I'm you know I'm right there with you I get it I understand that you know it's a pagan tradition that we're carrying on and then Halloween is more of a holy tradition that we've then made Pagan and, which most people don't talk about that one except for me. And I get that I see where your I see we're coming through that. And I kind of want to address two different things in this same conversation okay so we've got the holiday, conversations going on about well we don't do that we don't we don't have a Christmas tree we don't celebrate those Pagan things, well I mean good for you if that's how you feel convicted but let's let's talk about this and at the same time I want to talk about, the movement of the Torah observant Christians, that is gaining all kinds of steam and you get more and more people that become Torah observant meaning they they claim Christ but then at the same time, they live their lives attempting to keep the law as given to Moses. And so they have this whole thing going on where they're this Torah observant Christian so in this in these scriptures that we're going to look at we're going to address both. The Torah observant issue and that it's okay to have a Christmas tree. This is our goal. Pastor Newms: [31:52] Whether it's green or black yes. Pastor Bill: [31:54] What is green or black or pink or yellow blue yellow Christmas tree. Pastor Newms: [31:56] Every time. Pastor Bill: [32:00] LOL lagging so much fun. Pastor Newms: [32:02] The continue. Pastor Bill: [32:09] Well lady says um did I miss something from the Halloween episode Halloween is a holy tradition, so Halloween is steeped in holy traditions it's a lot of Celebrations by the church celebrating Martyrs and those that have done saintly works and it's even the word Halloween is a play off of Hallows Eve it's the the evening before a sacred day and so it's preparing to go into a holy time yeah you must have missed something, because we talked about all this unless I've missed something. Pastor Newms: [32:59] You didn't. You touched on it but not as far as what you just said of the fact of it being Halo hallowed which is Halloween. Pastor Bill: [33:11] Handled yeah. Pastor Newms: [33:13] But you did you you grazed over the fact that it is a. More of a Catholic tradition of the celebration of the Saints which is where we get All Saints Day from but. Pastor Bill: [33:30] We don't get it from them but it was recognized by them, and adopted as an official Catholic holiday some things to get some things that Catholics make up and we can say oh that's the Catholic tradition some things, they just adapted and officially recognized and Saints All Saints Day is one of those that they just adapt adopted. Okay so. We're going to talk about the Torah observant thing and in addressing that with scripture this is going to pave the way for talking about why it's okay to have a Christmas tree, so first we're going to turn to Matthew chapter 5 I've and we're going to look at verses 17 through 18. Okay for the for the remainder of this evening I'm probably not going to turn in my Bible every time because I literally typed these out in a Word document earlier, um so I have them already written right there so forgive me for not taking the time to turn to them in my actual Bible but I did that earlier so Matthew chapter 5 verses 17 through 18, this is Jesus talking and he says don't think that I came to abolish the law or the prophets, I did not come to abolish but to fulfill for truly I tell you until Heaven and Earth pass away not the smallest letter or one stroke of a letter will pass away from the law, until all things are accomplished or in the King James there the word is fulfilled until all things are. No way no that's right no it is King James says fulfill. Pastor Newms: [35:30] It's accomplished in the csb in the nasby and it is fulfilled in the KJV. Pastor Bill: [35:35] Sure make sure I was getting confused, okay so this is one of those verses that the Torah observant people bring up and they say you see you see has Heaven and Earth passed away yet has it, has Heaven and Earth passed away well no obviously haven't heard of hasn't passed away well there you go that means you still have to keep the law, Jesus didn't come to abolish the law he came he came and he told us that the law was going to stand until Heaven and Earth pass away I'm like yeah he he kind of said that but he actually said, he didn't come to a boss you but to fulfill it and then on the back end of that statement he says, I'm gonna fulfill it it needs to be fulfilled it has to be accomplished and the whole Heaven and Earth pass away thing, was a reference to this Jewish idea, of Heaven and Earth being temporary and going to be replaced later which is a Christian belief we have and the Book of Revelations the old Habit in the old Earth passed away I knew having a new Arthur created and that's where we spend eternity is on that new Earth. Um hey, he's tying it into this this idea and then saying the law has to be fulfilled, it has to be accomplished well the law required a sacrifice for sin ever so often there were sacrifices all the time it wasn't like once a year it was once a year but it was like, often they were doing these sacrifices. Everything from just sprinkling blood onto a goat and then sending it off into the Wilderness to down its own to actually slaughtering the goats goats the Lambs slaughtered many lambs all right so then, we're going to jump forward okay now we're going to be in John chapter 19, verses 28 through 30 okay and this is Jesus on the cross Jesus is literally, he's got Nail In His Hands a nail in his feet he's hanging on the cross he's got um, a crown of thorns on his head he's lost he's got chunks of his beard ripped out he's back is so torn up that he's, these I'm not saying that it says he has bone sticking out but there's no way he didn't have ribs exposed to the open air, it goes so far the Bible goes so far as to say that he was so beaten and so bruised that he wasn't recognizable as a human being anymore he was a lump of Flesh and Bone hanging on a cross. It says after this when Jesus knew, then everything was now finished that the scripture might be fulfilled he said right so he's saying this, to finish fulfilling the prophecies that were made as the only reason he's saying this I'm thirsty, a Jar full of sour wine was sitting there so they fixed a sponge full of sour wine on a hyssop branch now this is myrrh and vinegar that's how they make sour wine, they take the oil myrrh and they mix it with vinegar and it will quench your thirst but it's going to make you feel sick to your stomach and it's like a, I got backhanded, type of favor when the they're being crucified and you give them this myrrh mix of vinegar it quenches The Thirst but then it adds to the suffering that they're going through hell up his mouth, when Jesus received the sour wine he said it is finished what was finished Newms. It what's the aunt of his of this. Everything was now finished that the scripture might be fulfilled. Pastor Newms: [39:48] Everything that the world the world ended at that moment it is finished oh. Pastor Bill: [39:54] This is the fulfilling of the law. This is the moment that the law is now fulfilled this is the finished what is finished the Fulfillment of the law is now finished. It's finished the fulfill the law has been fulfilled the sacrificial lamb has been sacrificed the law has been fulfilled there's no longer a need, for the Torah to be followed. In order to have righteousness I just heard thousands of people gasp at that statement. Pastor Newms: [40:34] No not really. Pastor Bill: [40:34] Um not really so Howard how we're gonna we're gonna step forward to Romans chapter 7 wow I'm just my mouse is. Seven. Verses four through six okay. Is this Paul obviously writing to the Romans therefore my brothers and sisters you were also put to death in relation to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another okay we will put to death in relation to the law we died. You belong to him who was raised from the dead in order that we may bear fruit for God for when we were in the flesh the sinful passions aroused through the law were working in us to bear fruit for death, but now we have been released from the law, since we have died to what held us so that we may serve in the newness of the spirit and not in the old letter of the law, Paul's very clear here. You wait you can go back and read Romans 70 talks about the law is only and in existence over someone until you die once you die, you're not held accountable to the law anymore because you're dead so if the law says you can't park your car there, the law doesn't apply at the law about parking doesn't apply to you anymore when you're dead because you're dead right. That is probably not a great analogy but. Pastor Newms: [42:30] It's not because I'm trying to think how that would fit into the zombie apocalypse and that's just not working out for for the analogy so. Pastor Bill: [42:38] Palm Beach don't drive cars. He also goes on to talk about, that the law wasn't necessarily sin in it of itself but that sin took advantage of the law and when the law said do not covet because coveting is bad for you then sin, took the it took advantage of tempting people to then covet, um in response to the law about coveting being given okay, now we are going to go to Galatians chapter 2, verses 11 through 21 and this is another one that the Torah observant like to pull out. And they quote this this one part here, I'll bring it up when we get to it but it says but when Kate first okay this is Peter and, there's a couple reasons why it was written canvas instead of Peter here and they're all political and a church, Church politics stuff but it's Peter Kate and that's his real name Kansas came to Antioch I opposed him to his face because he stood condemned for he regularly ate with the Gentiles before certain men came from James, James is actually leading the church right now so Peter let it for a while Peter was too much of a loose cannon supposed to go over for a while and, Paul ultimately that wasn't where he was supposed to be and then James you know the half-brother of Jesus his dick over and led for, who knows how long. Um however when they came he withdrew and separated himself because he feared those from the circumcision party so Peter stopped hanging out with the Gentiles and doing Ministry to the Gentiles when, James the leader of the church sent people to go meet with Peter, because he didn't want to be seen spending time and doing Ministry to those who weren't circumcised, the rest of the Jews joined his hypocrisy, so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy at Barnabas he's a follower man he's just Paul and Barnabas in the jail cell Paul is like we're going to praise the Lord we're gonna be said for any bottoms is like yeah, bottoms is around Peter Peters like we're not going to hang out with the Gentiles when the people from James are here in Barnabas it's like yeah bottom this is up he's a hype man he's a follower. Um but when I saw that they were deviating from the truth of the Gospel I told caphis remember that speech. This is what the tour people like to quote if you who are a Jew, live like a gentile and not like a Jew how can you compel gentiles, to live like juice and they say if you who are Christian who follow the law follow the who love the Lord. Live like Gentiles and don't keep Torah that how can you compel, Gentiles to become Christians this is ants okay so he reads on we read only says we are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners, and yet because we know that a person is not justified by The Works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, I mean you get no justification by following the law if you had a if you're just continue reading on, um even we ourselves have believed in Christ Jesus this was so that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by The Works of the law Because by the works of the law, no human being will be justified by Christ is Christ then I promoter of sin absolutely not, if I rebuild those things that I tore down I show myself to be a lawbreaker for through the law I died to the law, so that I might live for God now Paul likes to pull out these confusing things and I think he does it on purpose just to get us thinking but what he's saying is, for through the law right so Christ fulfilled the law through Christ fulfilling the law I died to the law. I believe that's what he's saying there so that I might live forgot I have been crucified with Christ, this is this is why I think he's saying that you know he goes on to say I've been crucified with Christ and I no longer live but Christ lives in me the life I now live in the body I live by faith in the Son of God Who Loved Me, and gave himself for me, I did I do not set aside the grace of God and this is the part that I wish the Torah observant would continue reading on to right they stopped at the if you who are a Jew live like a gentile they stop there, continue reading on here in verse 21 for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing I've even heard them say. You guys claim that by keeping the law we're making Christ's sacrifice mute, and I'm like yeah Paul said that too, it's right there Galatians chapter 2 verse 21. Okay and then the next scripture I had in my layout was the Colossians that we read about. The the big point was the ascetic practices let no one condemned You by delighting in ascetic practices and the worship of angels climbing access to a Visionary Realm, right so we just read about the law dying to the law and, the law being fulfilled and now we live in the spirit of Christ listen, if you're dragging a Christmas tree into your house and putting shiny balls on it in order to worship your ancestors and cast visions of the future for the next year and actually carry out Pagan rituals then yeah you might have a problem but if you're just celebrating Christmas because it's culturally. What your culture does then no you're not doing anything wrong there, you're not because we died to the law we're no longer held to this this ideal of, don't even make it look like you're participating in that just the opposite Paul says. First Corinthians chapter 10. That's verse 31 through chapter oh my goodness in, verse 31 through 11, verse 1 why they decided to start the next chapter in for the last sentence of a paragraph. Pastor Newms: [50:31] Bill is frozen so I will speak why they decided to end chapter 11 on. The end of a chapter and of a thought is very odd as bill is frozen so I will read the scripture starting and. Corinthians verse 31 there it comes okay so the vert the verse is so whether you eat or drink or whatever you do do everything for the glory of God give no offense to Jews or Greeks or the Church of God just as, I also try to please everyone in everything. Pastor Bill: [51:18] Once everything. Pastor Newms: [51:20] Seeking my own benefit but the benefit of many so that, so they may be saved and then 11:1 is imitate me as I imitate Christ and then it then it that actually completes the thought because then in verse 2 he says now which shows that, he's now starting a new thought and now bill is back with us after I've read the scripture and talked about why did they end it in the middle of a paragraph like you started before you froze like this. Pastor Bill: [51:53] Correct so this goes into Paul's idea of yeah I was going good this goes into Paul's idea of, um when I'm in Rome I'm a Roman when I'm with the Jews I'm a Jew when I'm in Corinth I'm a you know I'm a Corinthian, he talks about I don't want to offend any when I want to please everyone because the don't want myself to get in the way of the Gospel right so, if you are around people that celebrate Kwanzaa. Celebrate Kwanzaa if you're around a community of Jewish people and they're celebrating Hanukkah celebrate Hanukkah. Right in Romans chapter 12. It's 12 verse 15. It says Rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep to people around your rejoicing or having the celebration celebrate with them. Bye. Pastor Newms: [53:09] Huh. Pastor Bill: [53:10] Be all things to all people celebrate. Well I don't want to pick up those traditions for my family okay then don't. The problem comes when you go out and you say well because I don't I'm better than you. Or because I don't you shouldn't or because I don't I look down on you that's where the problem lies the problem doesn't lie with you celebrating or not celebrating with in your home. Where you're in private where no one can see that's not where the problem lies I'm not here to tell you do or don't have a Christmas tree that's not the whole point. That wouldn't be called Mary asceticism as the name of the episode that would be called Mary don't have a Christmas tree or Merry Christmas tree or something you know what the Sam's was. Right all right do you have anything else you want to add to this before I pull out the last scripture I was going to pull out you wanted to talk about in Timothy right. Pastor Newms: [54:23] Yeah so in Timothy 6 1st Timothy 6 starting I'm not going to read all of it because of time because it's a lengthy chapter but if we start in verse. 10 is where a lot of people point to certain things, verse 10 is where we get the thought of. Pastor Bill: [54:49] 10 through. Pastor Newms: [54:57] 19 20 22 I don't know somewhere around there there isn't actually a 22 it ends at 21 just so everyone is aware I was joking so. Pastor Bill: [55:08] I'm usually very exact and newms is kind of like yeah I threw a water balloon and whatever it hit it hit. Pastor Newms: [55:15] All important so just read the chapter and then we'll get there so in verse 10 it talks about For the Love of Money is the root of all kinds of evil and by craving it some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs but you man of God flee from these things and pursue righteousness godliness Faith love endurance and gentleness and then it talks about fighting the good fight, and it talks about the a couple other things and we talked about Jesus and Pontius Pilate and we get down too. Verse 15 and 16 where you know God brings all this upon his time and then we get down to 17 and it's it's this is one of those situations where Paul starts a thought and then, oh look squirrel and then comes back to the thought, end up hey look squirrel is also very good but I'm just skipping it for this due to time. Pastor Bill: [56:12] Hall squirrels are always good Paul. Pastor Newms: [56:14] He's got great squirrel. Pastor Bill: [56:15] All never met a squirrel that wasn't awesome. Pastor Newms: [56:17] And he wrote all of them down which is why we don't have all of his writings in the Bible or else it would be, way too big because he he saw lots of squirrels and wrote to everyone about them which is great in 17 it says instruct those who are rich in the present age not to be arrogant or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of wealth but on God who richly provides us, all things to enjoy instruct them to do good to be rich in good works and to be generous and willing to share storing up Treasures for themselves as a good foundation for the coming age so that they may take hold of what it, what is truly life and then he, ends in 20 and 21 talking about Timothy being good and continuing because that's the end of the book so it's basically him saying bye, but the important part there that I that we actually used as the title card and what I was looking at when I was looking a lot of people do the whole money is evil, and you're like no no that's not what the Bible says the Bible says the Love of Money the is the root of evil because it leads people astray it's not that money in and of itself is evil and. I've argued that point lots of times just that verse and I know I've read it, but I had forgotten 17 which then talks about. You know those who are rich don't be arrogant and set their hope of don't set their hope upon wealth but on God because that's where a lot of people struggle, when they are wealthy is arrogance it's not that the wealth is bad it's the arrogance that comes with it that's so easy because you stopped looking towards God because you're providing for yourself, and then it talks about provides us with all things to enjoy and what's important about that to me is there's a lot of people that are like well if you have anything you should give it all up and a lot of people are the legalistic types that, Billiam was speaking of earlier that you know want to follow the Torah or want to follow you know different aspects of Old Testament law or some of them pick and choose which Old Testament laws they enjoy but they were like. Pastor Bill: [58:43] Hey if you want to build your moral code based off of the law of the Old Testament cool but don't don't claim and preach that it's the key to righteousness for yourself and those around you. Pastor Newms: [58:54] Yeah and don't judge others on it but it plainly says here Paul says, it's not hey you should have done this you could have done that you could have God does provide us with things to enjoy and I think that's, something especially with the term for today which is. Pastor Bill: [59:26] Asceticism. Pastor Newms: [59:27] Their belief the you know the full belief is you know you separate yourself from everything worldly including a lot of possessions and things and then there's the one step after that which is of course becoming a monk which starts with an m and, it's even more complicated it's Monasceticism. Pastor Bill: [59:53] Monasceticism. Pastor Newms: [59:54] Monasticism and that's where we get like monasteries and things like that and then another term for asceticism is self-denial you know and things like that but Paul plainly instructs us here to enjoy what God has given us not to. Hold it in arm's length and not enjoy it and so I find it very interesting that a lot of people use, and we all see this where people use a particular one verse and say hey look Paul says this but when you look at it as a whole Paul's talking about multiple things, and and so I think that's something we really have to look at, as a whole when it comes to the Timothy 6 and that's what I wanted to bring up with this is don't deny yourself, the pleasures of life that God has provided for us even if it's the little things like you know, a Christmas tree or giving your kids presents you know it's not a it's not going to stop your, religious beliefs and invalidate your salvation as some people want to teach so that's all I wanted to say and then bill can continue with his last scripture. Pastor Bill: [1:01:15] All right last scripture is Philippians poor. Pastor Newms: [1:01:20] Oops I went to Philemon that's not correct. Pastor Bill: [1:01:23] Four through seven. Pastor Newms: [1:01:23] The wrong p. Pastor Bill: [1:01:25] Rejoice in the lord always I'll say it again rejoice, let your graciousness be known to everyone the Lord is near don't worry about anything but in everything, through prayer and petition with Thanksgiving present your requests to God and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and Minds in Christ Jesus this ties back to what we were talking about before we were talking about, mind your own business and and Worship the Lord right yeah I use that word again that you don't like, not intentionally that's just how it comes out when I talk rejoice in the lord always, don't worry about how your neighbor is rejoicing you rejoice in the Lord if your neighbor invites you over. Didn't Rejoice with them right, Paul talks about he there was a verse about eating meat in the marketplace and a lot of people weren't eating the meat because it was it was slaughtered while he was being blessed to a false god, Frank and he didn't and Paul said don't worry about that eat the meat, it's fine because everything that you have and you call Holy is Holy it's not defiled by their actions, your life is controlled by your actions not the actions of someone else, if they're doing whatever ceremony as part of their religion or whatever that's not you doing that even if your present you're not the one doing that they are you're responsible for your actions, not theirs so be more loving. Just calm the heck down and find something to celebrate and rejoice. Pastor Newms: [1:03:36] At I had a funny thought. And when you were talking about rejoicing you know some people say that you know you take celebration too far. You know and no know that people like some people were like you take it too far that's that's what I mean. Pastor Bill: [1:03:58] I mean saturnalia is probably taking it too far but. Pastor Newms: [1:04:01] There are some things that are taking it too far. Pastor Bill: [1:04:03] Personal opinion when murder is part of your celebration I think. Pastor Newms: [1:04:07] Yeah you probably shouldn't do that it made me think of David dancing in the streets. Pastor Bill: [1:04:12] David dancing naked. Pastor Newms: [1:04:14] He wasn't dancing naked his dancing showed his nakedness which is why you should always wear proper undergarments but. Pastor Bill: [1:04:23] Flash always gird your loins before you start dancing. Pastor Newms: [1:04:26] We're proper undergarments but it just it brought that to my mind of hey you know celebrate rejoice and David's like I was like no not not that hard. Pastor Bill: [1:04:38] Understood the assignment. Pastor Newms: [1:04:40] Your wife had to get onto you calm down and I think we've all been there where we celebrated too hard in our wife got on to us at least I have. Pastor Bill: [1:04:48] Europe life. Pastor Newms: [1:04:49] Hey. Pastor Bill: [1:04:51] Your reward that you one for killing a giant ever really loved. Pastor Newms: [1:04:55] Hey you know it happens you kill a giant get a wife it's like a game show. Pastor Bill: [1:05:01] Kill a giant - get a wife don't gotta pay taxes your family doesn't have to pay taxes this is a good deal either I die in order to pay taxes anymore or I survived and I don't want to pay taxes anymore and I get a wife. Pastor Newms: [1:05:13] But yeah that that's what it that's why I was chuckling to myself why you were talking was you were like go out celebrate not just saw David going we, yeah gird your loins wear underwear when you go out and celebrate but. Pastor Bill: We love you guys have a great week. Pastor Newms: Be safe out there. Pastor Bill: And until next time.
