This week on Organic Matters, we speak to husband and wife team, Dominic Leonard and Alison Duck, who farm 250ac near Durrow in Co Laois. They run a mixed enterprise including tillage and livestock. Dominic explains the farming system and why he thinks sheep are an important part of the arsenal organic farmers have when it comes to managing land. They speak about getting LEADER funding to open a farm shop and tearooms to sell their organic meat directly from their farm. They share their experiences, including the challenges of running a micro-business, and why after eight years, they decided to close it. Produce from the farm is now sold at their local farmers market in Abbeyleix every Saturday.

Attracta Dooley from FRS Training and Chloe Walsh, a secondary school teacher who helps her husband Pat on their farm outside Durrow in Co. Laois, join Stuart Childs on this week's Dairy Edge podcast to talk about the upcoming FRS Training Best Practice in Milking Courses which commence on May 22nd in Pallaskenry Agricultural college. For Chloe, she wanted to learn more about the whole milking process which was her incentive to complete the course in October of last year, and she says that while she already knew how to milk, the course gave her much greater confidence in what she was doing, taught her skills that she didn't have beforehand and has also helped her when it comes to training people who are new to their farm when they arrive. Attracta and Chloe both agree that there is no shortage of work on dairy farms milking cows for people that are interested and that contrary to people's perceptions, it is quite flexible work. There is also great earning potential for people who are willing to do it. Finally, Attracta details the dates of the upcoming courses and gives details of how to book by going to: https://www.frstraining.com/sectors/agriculture-horticulture/ For more episodes from the Dairy Edge podcast go to the show page at:https://www.teagasc.ie/animals/dairy/the-dairy-edge-podcast/ The Dairy Edge is a co-production with LastCastMedia.com

fWotD Episode 2487: Benty Grange hanging bowl Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Sunday, 25 February 2024 is Benty Grange hanging bowl. The Benty Grange hanging bowl is a fragmentary Anglo-Saxon artefact from the seventh century AD. All that remains are parts of two escutcheons: bronze frames that are usually circular and elaborately decorated, and that sit along the outside of the rim or at the interior base of a hanging bowl. A third disintegrated soon after excavation, and no longer survives. The escutcheons were found in 1848 by the antiquary Thomas Bateman, while excavating a tumulus at the Benty Grange farm in western Derbyshire, and were presumably buried as part of an entire hanging bowl. The grave had probably been looted by the time of Bateman's excavation, but still contained high-status objects suggestive of a richly furnished burial, including the hanging bowl and the boar-crested Benty Grange helmet. The surviving escutcheons are made of enamelled bronze and are 40 mm (1.6 in) in diameter. They show three dolphin-like creatures arranged in a circle, each biting the tail of the one ahead of it. Their bodies and the background are made of enamel, likely all yellow; the creatures' outlines and eyes are tinned or silvered, as are the borders of the escutcheons. Although three escutcheons from a hanging bowl at Faversham also contain dolphin-like creatures, the Benty Grange design is most closely paralleled by Insular manuscripts, particularly figures in the Durham Gospel Fragment and the Book of Durrow. Surviving illustrations of the third escutcheon show that it was of a different size and style, exhibiting a scroll-like pattern; it parallels the basal disc of a hanging bowl from Winchester, and may too have been originally placed at the bottom of the Benty Grange bowl. What remains of one escutcheon belongs to Museums Sheffield and as of 2023 was in the collection of the Weston Park Museum. The other is held by the Ashmolean Museum at the University of Oxford; as of 2023 it is not on display. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:11 UTC on Sunday, 25 February 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Benty Grange hanging bowl on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Stephen Neural.

Hugh de Lacy, one of the Anglo-Normans who was sent to bring order to Ireland (where the Anglo-Normans were having  a lot of trouble), was inspecting the military installation he was having built at Durrow (where St. Columba had previously built a monastery), when he was murdered by one of the Irish who wanted him dead, by being hit on the head with an ax. So there you are. There is your crime. We discuss this, yes we do, but really we are discussing Hugh de Lacy because he built Trim Castle, and Michelle really really really wanted to talk about Trim Castle. So she does. We learn a lot about Anglo-Norman castles, really. But Anne still wonders about where the best place to hide your murder ax might be, because under your tunic just does not sound right.

This week sees the LaoisToday team introduce a new weekly #LoveLaois Podcast.  The #LoveLaois Podcast is free to download on all podcast platforms and will focus on some of the week's big local stories.  "With the local sports coverage well covered in our regular Talking Sport Podcasts, this production will focus on non-sport related stories," says LaoisToday owner and managing editor Steven Miller.  "It will have an upbeat tone, looking back on some of the LaoisToday stories that grabbed attention over the past week, and will give an insight into what we cover and how we approach various issues.  "We also intend on hearing from a variety of well-known local and national figures." Our first guest is Cathaoirleach of Laois County Council Thomasina Connell, who chats about her recent trip to the USA, where she marched in the St Patrick's Day parade, met Hilary Clinton and also travelled to Williamson County in Tennessee which is twinned with Laois County Council. She also chats about recently becoming a mother and how she balances that with her busy life as a county councillor and self-employed solicitor.  As well as that, Steven and Alan reflect on the April Fools story that reported that exiled Royals Harry and Meghan were to move to live in Clonaslee.  The lads also chat about a Michelin Star chef setting up a restaurant in Abbeyleix, the Honest Egg children in Durrow and the passing of well-known Laois women 'Pippy' McEvoy and Lillian O'Neill.

We all love nature but sometimes we don't consider just how much we are damaging it through our food and economic systems.  In this programme Maura Brennan who runs the Acorn Project in Kilkenny is trying to repair this contradiction by running workshops that engage communities to care for and grow trees in their locality.Through funding from the Woodland Support Project, the Acorn Project has collaborated with Irish Seed Savers who are running workshops to train community seed savers in how to extract seeds and get them to germinate; the seeds having been already collected in their locality during the autumn.  These seeds will then be planted in tree nurseries - wooden boxes - in parks or green areas, until the saplings grow to about two years old when they will then be planted out into areas designated by the community.  Jeremy Turkington is Orchard Manager at Seedsavers who takes the groups through the processes in stratifying the seeds.Monica meets Maura in the Millenium Park, Freshford where an Acorn Box containing young saplings are growing in beautiful leaf mould compost.  Using leaf mould to grow trees makes complete sense to workshop facilitator Donal O'Leary who runs Waste Down.  Waste Down provides training in composting and they also sell compost too.  He came to Durrow last autumn to train the tidy towns committee on how to compost leaf mould in their locality.  It's always best to leave the leaves on the ground for wildlife but, if you're removing leaves from drains or to make car-parking space, then putting them in a heap afterwards to compost in a great way of getting the best use out of them. The Acorn Project runs forest school for children to get them out in the woods playing and learning about trees and the uses of trees. This according to Maura, will benefit them by cultivating a deeper connection to nature as they grow up into adults.  An exciting new project which has just begun is called Waking the Seeds and involves 20 women who are exploring their connections to the woods through art.  The workshop is a  co-facilitation between Maura and Kilkenny based artist Rachel Burke.Restoring our forests acorn by acorn is the motto for Maura who believes that little things can achieve a lot.

After a huge weekend of club action, we've split up our Talking Sport Podcast into two parts - hurling and football.  This episode focuses solely on hurling as Damien Carter joins Steven Miller and Alan Hartnett to reflect on it all.  First, the lads discuss the 2020 Laois SHC final between Clough-Ballacolla and Borris-Kilcotton which took place on Saturday evening.  Clough-Ballacolla won their first Laois SHC title since 2015 as the excellence of Stephen Maher and Robbie Phelan fired them to glory. Maher scored 13 points while Phelan ended with 1-3 as Clough-Ballacolla ran out five point winners. The lads reflect on a brilliant performance and examine where the game was won.  They then turn their attentions back to Friday evening where The Harps made history against Portlaoise.  Not since Durrow won the intermediate title in 1976 has a main team from the parish won a hurling championship title, making it the longest any club in the county has gone without serious silverware. While they've won plenty of league titles, underage and junior grades – as well as a selection of camogie and football championships – their main hurling team has endured serious heartache since the Durrow and Cullohill clubs came together in 1984. The lads manage to conclude their chat just in time for the latest episode of Love Island too.

After so long being cooped up in offices and looking at each other on Zoom calls, the LaoisToday Talking Sport Podcast went on a road trip this week to record our hurling county final preview show. Durrow was the destination and the picturesque Bob's Bar was the venue as Steven Miller, Alan Hartnett and Damien Carter looked ahead to this weekend's delayed 2020 hurling finals. It was a behind-closed-doors recording in Bob's Hideout upstairs - but all going well we'll get to a venue at some point in the future with an audience. And as Christy Moore might say "with six creamy pints out on a tray". The Harps - who are bidding to win a first championship title for the parish with a main team since Durrow's 1976 intermediate triumph - take on Portlaoise in the Premier Intermediate final on Friday evening while on Saturday Clough-Ballacolla and Rathdowney-Errill meet in the senior decider. Both Durrow and Cullohill are decorated brilliantly in the yellow and red colours of The Harps as they seek to win the title in what is their third final in a row to be in. Portlaoise, who got the better of The Harps in the 2018 final, though, will be serious opposition. Is The Harps time now? Alan and Damien reckon it is. Steven isn't as sure. As for the senior game, again it's a hard one to call. Borris-Kilcotton are seeking a second senior title and a first since 2016 while you have to go back to 2015 for Ballacolla's last championship win though they are going for a fourth in 11 seasons. Again the lads are split on who will win it, and to rob a great line from former Limerick player and manager TJ Ryan: "It's like a deaf dog. Hard to call." Alan and Steven also chat about the Laois camogie manager's job, which is now vacant following the decision of John Desmond to step down after two years in the role. We will have another episode out on Thursday morning to look ahead to the 2020 senior football final between Portarlington and Graiguecullen as well as the All Ireland intermediate ladies football semi-final on Sunday between Laois and Wexford.

Is there magic in the medium? Do different recorded formats influence how we hear and absorb traditional music? Are we missing out on anything now that it’s much easier to record and FIND recordings online? Jeff Kszaiek, Kieran Jordan, Happy Traum, Steph Geremia, Kirsten Allstaff, Elizabeth Sweeney, Jacob Deck, and Natalya Kay help host Shannon Heaton explore early wax cylinder recordings, VR music sessions and YouTube videos, and the special in-between realm of the cassette tape.  There’s plenty of music here, too. Real American: A Memoir (Henry Holt & Company) Julie Lythcott-Haims, the New York Times bestselling author of How to Raise an Adult, has written a different kind of book this time out – a deeply personal, biting and affecting account of her life growing up as a biracial black woman in America in Real American: A Memoir Bringing a brisk, poetic sensibility to her prose, Lythcott-Haims stirringly evokes her personal battle with the low self-esteem that American racism routinely inflicts on people of color. The only child of an African-American father and a white British mother, she shows indelibly how so-called "micro" aggressions in addition to blunt force insults can puncture a person's inner life with a thousand sharp cuts. Real American expresses also, through Lythcott-Haims’s path to self-acceptance, the healing power of community in overcoming the hurtful isolation of being incessantly  considered "the other" Real American is a fearless and powerful memoir. Lythcott-Haims’s eloquent words deserve to be studied, memorized, and repeated. Here is a book that should be read again and again, and then once more after that. Praise for Real Americans “A compelling, incisive and thoughtful examination of race, origin and what it means to be called an American. Engaging, heartfelt and beautifully written, Lythcott-Haims explores the American spectrum of identity with refreshing courage and compassion.” —Bryan Stevenson, New York Times bestselling author of Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption “Real American is a courageous, achingly honest meditation on what it means to come to consciousness as a mixed race child and adult in a nation where Black lives weren't meant to matter.” —Michelle Alexander, New York Times bestselling author of The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Color Blindness “Breaks the silence on what it means to grow up mixed-race in America. Her spare but powerful prose has an emotional rawness that will profoundly resonate with all readers and help many feel a little less alone.” ―Heidi W. Durrow, New York Times bestselling author of The Girl Who Fell from the Sky “A cathartic and bold truth-telling.” ―Danzy Senna, bestselling author of Caucasia and New People “A powerful, honest book that should be required reading for everyone.” —Anita Amirrezvani, author of The Blood of Flowers and Equal of the Sun “To write with such an open heart about race and Blackness takes great courage. To do so in prose that is at once elegant and raw takes great talent.” —Ayelet Waldman, bestselling author of Bad Mother and of A Really Good Day “A true achievement . . . so much more than a personal memoir . . . [Lythcott-Haims] channels the shrewdness of Eula Biss and the compassion of Ta-Nehisi Coates.” ―Lee Daniel Kravetz, international bestselling author of Strange Contagion and Supersurvivors “Powerful . . . a memoir that [illuminates] the psychic cost of racism to those who are cast as ‘other.’ The journey of self-healing and the empowerment  . . .  is a story of triumph from which all of us can learn.” —Beverly Daniel Tatum, author of Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? and Can We Talk About Race? “Stands for, and stands up for, Americans who are questioned, confronted, disregarded and unnerved by our citizen country . . . Real American will be one of those books that is passed from hand to hand, with passages marked where readers find strong words that speak truth.” ―A.J. Verdelle, author of The Good Negress “. . . shows once again, plainly and unforgettably, that if you are Black in America, it does not matter who you are, racism will come knocking. Lythcott-Haims . . . . Real American is the story of that insidious harm and of a woman who became alert to the American racism within herself and fought back. . . . not only an excellent, satisfying read but a book that can help us “stay woke”—as we must—to the sometimes stealthy and always life-threatening danger of racism, so that we all can fight back.” —U.S.Representative Barbara Lee (D-CA) Julie Lythcott-Haims served as dean of freshmen and undergraduate advising at Stanford University, where she received the Dinkelspiel Award for her contributions to the undergraduate experience. She holds a BA from Stanford, a JD from Harvard Law School, and an MFA in writing from California College of the Arts. She is a member of the San Francisco Writers’ Grotto, and resides in the Bay Area with her husband, their two teenagers, and her mother.

The Ave Maria Hour Radio Show

Rebroadcast of the long running radio program, "The Ave Maria Hour", a presentation of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement. www.AtonementFriars.org St. Columba - Patron of Derry, floods, bookbinders, poets, Ireland, Scotland. St. Columba 521-597, Born probaly in Donegal Ireland of royal descent he studied at Moville under St. Finnian then in Leinster at the monastery of Clonard under another St. Finnian. He was ordained before he was twenty-five and spent the next fifteen years preaching and setting up foundations at Derry, Durrow, and Kells. Possibly because of a family feud which resulted in the death of 3000 and for which he considered himself partly responsible he left Ireland at 42 and landed on the island of Iona off the coast of Scotland. There he built the monastery which was to become world famous. With SS Canice and Comgall he spread the gospel to the Picts; he also developed a monastic rule which many followed until the introduction of St. Benedicts. He died on Iona and is also known as Colm, Colum and Columcille. Feast day is June 9.

2021 update: please note that the museum upstairs is no longer open. Anyone passing through County Laois on the M8 is missing a lot. The nearby village of Durrow has many fine features going for it - Ireland's only Scarecrow festival, Castle Durrow, Sheppard's famous auction house and Bob's Bar run by the affable Bobby Campion (above on the right).  Bob's Bar features a little museum containing artifacts from years gone by out the back. The museum is a must-see on your visit to Durrow. However, it is upstairs that Bob has really 'gone to town' with his vintage bicycle museum. It's a very personal experience with each and every bike having a picture of its owner with their words on happy memories on that very bike. Other details in the museum include letters from locals who emigrated. Not to rest on his laurels, Bob has set up a very active and congenial vintage bicycle club, complete with uniforms and regular meet-ups for cycling. Perhaps you'll be lucky enough to be about when they're next out? Even if you're not, click on his cycling guide app below and you'll get to sample some of the best places in the area on a high nelly! http://www.everytrail.com/guide/elephant-and-castle-bicycle-trail Bob's the epicentre of this trail. To start it in earnest, you'll be taking the main N77 Kilkenny road, through the village, down the hill past the Durrow brick memorial and taking the left on the L1751 to Attanagh. Here's a very popular reel which isn't too cruel to flute players.  I'm sorry if I've been cruel to it. If anyone has any requests (maybe even to stop) please get in touch iflute@googlemail.com.  I appreciate any feedback.  I've put my shoes back on for this tune as I know the tapping was of use to at least one person.  I'm sorry for not having had it in the last few sets. I'll make sure I'm shod from now on. All the best, and I hope you like the tunes.
