You may have heard the phrase, “Not In My Backyard,” or NIMBY. It's often used – negatively – to describe neighbors who don't want development in their neighborhood, whether it's a new apartment building or affordable housing. Meaning that many of us support changes in principle, until it potentially affects our own neighborhood. Some Madisonians are worried that Madison is growing and changing too fast, and their neighborhoods will become too crowded or full of traffic. But Will Ochowicz says that more Madisonians should say YIMBY, or “Yes In My Backyard” in order to help ease the city's housing crisis. As in: Yes, we want more development. Yes, we want more housing to be built. He's started a grassroots group called Madison is for People to rally for changes to Madison's zoning laws. Dylan Brogan sat down with Will to learn what's motivating him. Editor's Note: After we recorded this interview, the Madison City Council voted to change its zoning code to allow for more housing density. You can now build an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) on lots with small apartment buildings, and not just single-family homes. This can mean creating additional living space within an existing building – like a garage, attic, or basement – or building a separate structure on the same lot. ADUs are limited to 900 square feet and no more than two bedrooms. Wanna talk to us about an episode? Leave us a voicemail at 608-318-3367 or email madison@citycast.fm. We're also on Instagram! Madison City Attorney Michael Haas is no stranger to elections. He used to be the administrator for the Wisconsin Elections Commission, the state agency that administers Wisconsin's election laws. And he's sounding the alarm about two new Constitutional amendments that Wisconsin voters approved this April. He says the amendments were written so vaguely that it's unclear how local clerks, who run our elections, should carry them out. This could lead to messy lawsuits, which could undermine public trust in the elections they were intended to bolster. Dylan Brogan speaks with Attorney Haas about the dilemma and what it means for the November Presidential election. Wanna talk to us about an episode? UW-Madison announced some ambitious goals for the planet: power the entire campus with renewable sources of electricity by 2030, send no new waste to the landfill by 2040, and become carbon neutral by 2048. For an institution with 420 buildings and another 9,500 acres of off-campus property, that's no small feat. So how will they get there? New apartment buildings in Madison promise many amenities: granite countertops, fitness centers, and rooftop decks. But one new development, Bakers Place, promises something more: a chance to save us from climate change. The building uses a classic material – wood – with a new twist. It's the first building in Madison to use mass timber, an engineered material to replace steel and concrete, which are environmentally costly to produce. The wood material also promises to slow climate change by keeping carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. The 14-story apartment building is currently under construction on East Washington Avenue on Madison's east side, across from Breese Stevens field. Dylan Brogan caught up with Jason Joyce, Isthmus publisher, who profiled the 25-year old developer behind the project. He's retiring in May, so producer Dylan Brogan caught up with him to ask what's next for the county. ✨ We're hiring! Come work with us. ✨

You might think we'd be sitting pretty when it comes to city services. But according to Madison Finance Director Dave Schmiedicke, things are tighter than you'd think. City expenses are going up faster than the city's ability to raise money. Your City Cast Madison team - Bianca Martin, Dylan Brogan and Molly Stentz - is on the road this week, taking in the Madison area's most famous attractions. We're asking the question… as a local, are these stops worth the hype? It's Day Two, and we're headed to The House on the Rock in Spring Green, Wisconsin. Built by architect Alex Jordan to be a weekend retreat, it has since become one of the most hyped local attractions. The house itself still stands, but is surrounded by an entire complex, a museum of sorts, that you can explore on your own with the price of admission. It houses collections of self-playing musical instruments, a three-story whale and perhaps the largest carousel in the country. Do you have a fun memory from the House on a Rock? We bet you do. Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Homes Jr. famously said, “Taxes are what we pay for civilized society.” But who pays and how much has been debated ever thus. When you buy anything from a cup of coffee to a car in Madison, you're paying sales tax. That money is collected by local shops and sent to the state of Wisconsin. Every two years, the state decides how much of that money to share with the communities where it was collected. Same goes for the income tax you pay every year. But cities say that state money is not keeping up with inflation. Costs are going up, but the money to pay for them isn't. Madison's got some unpopular choices: ask voters to pay higher property taxes or cut back city services. And when the state's sitting on a surplus, it's a hard pill to swallow. Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes Conway tells Dylan Brogan what's ahead. Also on the episode:
The whole City Cast Madison team is back in the saddle today. Bianca Martin, Dylan Brogan and Molly Stentz round up this week's news, including a Wisconsin Supreme Court ruling on weed at traffic stops, the fight over paying for childcare, and Madison's aim to be a sanctuary city for transgender and non-binary residents. And it's been a year since the Dobbs Supreme Court decision, which led to the criminalization of abortion in Wisconsin. There's dueling abortion-related events at the State Capitol this weekend. Mentioned on the episode: Our interview with Ruth Schmidt about Wisconsin's childcare crisis The March for Life and a Pro-Choice Rally are both at the State Capitol on Saturday

The Madison school district initially offered teachers a 3.5 percent pay bump but is now committed to doubling it to the highest raise allowed by state law. Teachers are applauding the move and say investing in educators is long overdue. However, what this means for the district's financial health is far from clear because of a looming budget deficit. Nichelle Nichols, president of the Madison school board, talks with Dylan Brogan about why the board is prioritizing teacher pay this year and the difficult decisions coming due in future budgets. We also get an update on the superintendent search and the district's embattled spokesperson Full list of Make Music Madison performances Wanna talk to us about an episode? You'd think a record $7 billion surplus would ease the partisan tension between Democratic Gov. Tony Evers and Republican lawmakers when crafting the next state budget. Nope! But Evers and the GOP-controlled Legislature have compromised on money for schools and local governments. However, funding for the University of Wisconsin system and who gets a tax cut might create another showdown between the governor and lawmakers. Dylan Brogan talks with WisPolitics Editor JR Ross about what deals have been hammered out with the state budget, what has yet to be worked out, and what this all means for Madison. Dylan Brogan sits down with Andy Gricevich, owner of What Got Gathered, for some local foraging pro tips. You can find Andy at the Westside Community Market, Monona Farmers Market and the Madison Eastside Farmers Market. Check out his website for details on the wild food walks.
Phosphorous runoff has been plaguing Madison's lakes and streams for years. This fertilizer causes algae to bloom, making our beloved waterways stinky and hazardous. Now facing tougher state and federal regulations, the Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District has to clean up more phosphorous than ever. And just how they propose to do that is up for debate. The sewer district says filtering out more phosphorous would be costly, and wouldn't address other pollutants like mercury, chloride and PFAS. They'd rather change where the water flows. Instead of sending treated water to the Badger Mill Creek in Verona, they'd reroute it to the Badfish Creek southeast of Madison, where there's a plan in place to manage it. But concerns that the Badger Mill Creek would suffer persist. Come along for a deep dive into what it takes to clean up southern Wisconsin's water. Dylan Brogan speaks to Martye Griffin, Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District's Director of Ecosystem Services. Learn more:
Meteorologist Bob Lindmeier has been a household name in the Madison area for decades. Most people know him as the WKOW weatherman. And after 43 years, he's seen a lot of weather. Happy Earth Week, everyone. Dane County is now the first county in the state to have government facilities 100% powered by renewable energy. The airport, the courthouse, the Alliant Energy Center… their energy use is now completely offset by local renewable energy production. The Yahara Solar farm is online. Dylan Brogan, Bianca Martin, and Molly Stentz round up the news this week, which means we're unpacking election day results. What could Judge Janet's win mean for 2024 and the next presidential race? Why did Wisconsin vote for the liberal-backed judge while also supporting tougher bail measures and work requirements for welfare? Are the purple state eulogies a bit premature? And what will happen in the Madison race that came down to two votes? We don't know the answers, but that doesn't stop us from talking about them! Come along for the ride. Yeehaw.

On March 19th, 2018, WLRN's Thistle Pettersen aired interviews with feminists Julie Bindel and Meghan Murphy via WORT 89.9 FM's airwaves. Two days later, a public discussion took place at the station at their board meeting that Thistle was not invited to nor was she aware that it was happening. This is a recording of that discussion. Several members of the Madison community, some local journalists and others paid staff at WORT, spoke disparagingly of Thistle's character, accusing her of being "less than honest" and pulling a "bait and switch" regarding her program. The truth is, Thistle met about a month before the program aired with Molly Stentz, WORT's news director, and outlined the content of the live interviews she was going to air. The news director did not object to Thistle's choice of guests and the program was aired. The only thing that changed about the program is that one of Thistle's guests, could not be on the air live, so Thistle recorded the interview ahead of time. You can listen to the interviews Thistle did with Julie and Meghan here: https://soundcloud.com/wlrn-media/interviews-with-julie-bindel-meghan-murphy-on-wort-899-fm-in-madison Why is it that women talking about the impacts of gender identity culture and laws on girls and women is viewed as "hate speech" and "incredibly harmful" to the community? He was at the meeting primarily to defend Molly Stentz's reputation among her peers at the station but also made disparaging comments about Ms. Pettersen. There was no "bait and switch" Here is proof on the WORT web site from a December 2017 post: https://www.wortfm.org/tag/womens-liberation-radio-news/ Minutes 11:25-16:35 WORT paid staff Nathan MQuillen. Minutes 16:45-20:25 Glenn Mitroff, paid staff at WORT. Glenn is the Volunteers Coordinator. He complains of Thistle's past shows that should have been "evidence" that the March 19th show was going to be just as bad.
